repost: @getfitwithcabi... Having a fitness/weight loss account, opens the door for anyone online to talk & comment on my body and weight loss, with both my consent & my participation. And for the most part, I feel comfortable with that. What I don’t feel comfortable with, however, is people discussing my body with neither of those two things. The ongoing back and forth debates, headlines, trending topics & memes about Adele’s weight loss make me uncomfortable mainly because she’s not inviting any of us to discuss these things about her body. The same I feel when people feel the need to turn Lizzo’s weight into a meme. I will always celebrate someone’s decision to become a healthier version of themselves, but the obsession with people’s weight has always & will always make me feel uncomfortable. Part of it is projecting how I felt when I first lost a lot of weight. The amount of compliments & attention I get now is three times the amount I got before, and it’s taking me some time to grow comfortable into receiving that attention. In fact, about 3-4 months into my weight loss, I would silently hope no one would notice. I’m not powerful or beautiful because of a number on a scale. I’m not successful because I’ve lost weight. I’m not a good human because I’m not obese. I am worth so much more as a human, and my value is not in how much I weigh. Unless my participation and consent are involved, me existing is not an invitation for a stranger to comment on my body or my weight.
