Battle of Marengo

The Battle of Marengo (14 June 1800) was one of the most important battles in the career of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). It not only helped bring the French Revolutionary Wars to an end but also did much to consolidate Bonaparte's new position as First Consul of the French Republic. The battle became a major piece of propaganda for the Bonapartist regime.

Background

In the months after he seized power in the Coup of 18 Brumaire, First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte was far from secure in his new position. He was still considered by many to be an up-jumped Corsican opportunist, and he had no shortage of rivals – such as generals Jean Bernadotte and Jean Victor Moreau – who would be glad to see his fall from grace. Further, the French Republic was still embroiled in the unpopular War of the Second Coalition (1798-1802) against an alliance of anti-French powers including Austria, Russia, Britain, the Ottoman Empire, and Naples. This conflict was part of the broader French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802), meaning that by January 1800, France had been perpetually at war for the better part of a decade. With much of the general populace war-weary, Bonaparte knew he had to deliver a swift, decisive victory if he wanted to win the support of his people.

His first step was to order the formation of a 30,000-man army based at Dijon, primarily consisting of soldiers who had been on garrison duty in the provinces. Though Bonaparte fully intended to lead this army over the Alps to fight the Austrians in northern Italy, its true purpose had to be concealed; it was named the Army of the Reserve and was placed under the command of Bonaparte's trusted chief of staff Louis-Alexandre Berthier.

While onlookers believed the ruse that this was merely a reserve force, Bonaparte secretly prepared the army for campaigning. Soldiers were trained using the 'canteen' system, whereby eight veterans and eight recruits would march, eat, and camp together, fostering a sense of camaraderie and allowing the recruits to learn quicker. Meanwhile, Bonaparte worked with war minister Lazare Carnot to procure 100,000 pairs of boots, 40,000 uniforms, and 2 million rations of biscuits for the army at Dijon. The First Consul also ordered all major field forces to adopt the corps d'armée system, breaking each army down into mobile and semi-independent corps; this would become a staple of Napoleonic warfare.

As his army was being prepared, Bonaparte poured over maps to decide where he would cross the Alps. He decided to take the main part of his army across the 2469-meter (8,100-foot) Great St Bernard Pass, while a division under General Adrien Moncey would take the St Gothard Pass. During one strategy meeting, Bonaparte purportedly asked his secretary, Bourrienne, where he thought the decisive battle would be fought once the French had gotten over the Alps. "How the devil should I know?" asked Bourrienne, as the First Consul drove a pin into a map on the plains of the Scrivia River. "I shall fight him here," said Bonaparte. It was the exact spot where he would fight the Battle of Marengo three months later, a demonstration of Bonaparte's quick and perceptive mind (Roberts, 252; Chandler, 275).

Rose Griffons Headcanons

Giving some love and recognition for my country representatives !

-They get along very well with the other European teams, especially with England’s Knights of Queen.

-Despite losing a lot in the FFI, their goalkeeper Roger Pialat is considered one of the best goalkeepers in Europe. (He even managed to create a stronger version of Galatyn).

-Despite being the captain, Pierre Godin doesn’t wear his captain’s armband very often. He said that he doesn’t really like it, to which his teammates don’t really understand.

-Pierre also considers Edgar as his soulbrother, since they both have similar personalities. The main difference is that Pierre is not an attacker at all (He did go on the attack sometimes, but only if he sees an opening in the rival’s team by his defender position).

-Pierre is always stylish and gracious no matter what. He also secretly like teasing Julien.

-Michaël Aron is the cook of the team.

-Francis Poujol wants to be an architect when he grow up.

-Kévin Pinot adores history, more specifically the Napoleonic period.

-Roland Pérec lives in Paris and just loves the atmosphere. He also loves seeing people being amazed by the city’s monuments while sipping some coffee.

-They all are mastering something already, and a lot of people from other teams are jealous of them, mostly non European teams, since the other European teams are happy for their early success (some others even have some success already too !) : Romuald Huysmans already gains well in his life by being of the most famous models worldwide. On the other hand, Stéphane Hinault is also one of the top hit singers. It’s really something to go this far already for such young people. 

-Julien Rosseau, being as pretentious as he is, believes he is the best representative of his team. On top of that, he matches with the team’s name as he always carry a rose between his teeth. The main reason of him believing that is because a lot of their supporters are saying he is the best player, and that he should be the captain, although Pierre is a great captain too (It’s probably the reason why Pierre tease him, as he is the captain). Roland even thinks it’s a bit infuriating for Julien to see Pierre without his captain’s band.

-Jérôme Hervaud has an enhanced sense of smell, giving him a special talent of creating and spotting great parfumes.

-Alain is the son of a bicycle repairman, but he hates working on them. He actually loves riding a bike and wants to participate in the Tour de France one day. His teammates are fully supportive of his dream, and they even say that football will help since he will grow stronger. They help him getting up whereas his strict father tries to bring him down.

-Alain was born in Martinique. His family decided to move out to France when he was fairly young.

-Émile goes to cinema to watch every new movies that comes out. He has a huge collection of DVD’s to a point where almost all his dining room is filled with them.

-André Pinson has been a huge fan of philosophy ever since he discovers it thanks to his dad. He wants to be a philosophy teacher when he’s older. For that, he is “training” with his teammates, but they don’t understand a lot about philosophy.

-Jean Gutain believed he was the best fashion creator, until Knights of Queen’s member Mickey Richards defeated him. So he needs to prove his talent again.

-Claude is already a great baker, he wants to expand his business worldwide when he gets older.

-Michel is great at gardening, he even cherishes roses to give some new fresh ones to Julien.

Origin of the name: Seychelles

When the French explorer Lazare Picault landed on today's Mahé in 1742, he was struck by its fertile and luxuriant appearance and called it Ile de l'Abondance.

When he returned two years later to map it better, he renamed it Mahé in honour of Mahé de la Bourdonnais, his patron and administrator of Mauritius. Later Mahé took the name of Isle de Séchelles in honour of Viscount Jean Moreau de Séchelles, Minister of Finance during the reign of Louis XV.

Later, this name (anglicised to Seychelles) became the name of the entire archipelago, while Mahé returned to be used for the main island.

I've been thinking about my boy Lazare a lot again lately. Not that I ever really stop thinking about him (in May he will have been a part of my brain for EIGHT years or over a third of my entire life). But I realized I needed to iron out his time in Paris cuz I realized just how vague it gets in places.

Specifically, I really need to research how college/post-secondary schooling works in France and revise what he was even doing for that stuff before he dropped out, because I realized that I don't... actually think Lazare would've been all that into acting as an adult. Which is a big change. Lazare's had that as a part of his backstory for forever. I think he still could've done a couple productions as a kid (and is still amateur-decent at vocal impressions cuz he's observant and has a good ear) but as a young adult he was already way too self-conscious and anxious to wanna appear onstage in that context. In the context of music, however...

I myself have been trying to put more effort into learning music shit lately and it's really been speaking to me. I made Lazare a student DJ at the radio station of the university he ends up attending in America for a couple semesters as a result and that's what really sent me in this direction. IN SHORT, I like the idea of him trying to study music theory and/or concert piano during his first go-around with school. I think making him a "failed" musician instead of a failed actor kinda tightens up his character and also makes him more interesting to me personally, LMAO. Not that I think acting is boring, it's just not a big part of my life and Lazare is a very personal, self-indulgent character.

He does currently own a vintage Wurlitzer keyboard that he found on Facebook or some shit and later a Roland keytar (pictured below), and has written plenty of short-to-medium-length instrumentals that don't ever really see the light of day. I used to have him know guitar as well but I've since retconned that.

(Don’t) Rest in Peace follows the adventures of the gun (and sword!) toting Roland Carnegie (played by actor Laurent Dauphiné), historical scholar and treasure-hunting archeologist. Joined after the first episode by two partners Marcel Durand (Jord Moreau) and Adrian Collias (Nikandros Cora), Roland and his team travel Europe on the trail of lost or legendary sites and objects. In its early seasons, DRiP gained a decently-sized, but not massive following on LiveJournal. All combinations of the main Roland/Marcel/Adrian trio were explored in pairs or sometimes all together, though no single preferred pairing dominated.

In season 2, a new recurring character of Vik No-Last-Name (played by Damen Vasilias) was introduced, who got some fannish notice almost solely because people decided he was attractive enough to be shipped. The fact that actor Damen Vasilias was known to be openly bisexual also promoted a little further interest. Thus, a ship of Roland/Vik was born that had a small fandom following and minimal canon support.

All of this would change in season 3.

Questions for OCs:

11. How do they cope with confusion (seek clarification, pretend they understand, etc)?

It can go either way. He hates asking for clarification because to him it means risking either looking stupid or admitting that he wasn't listening (and he is prone to zoning out, despite his efforts). If he can get away with staying confused, he'll usually just try to move on smoothly and maybe look some stuff up on the internet later if he can remember. If he needs or wants clarity on something bad enough, he will ask, though. Always politely-- a "sorry, I didn't understand that," or a "what did you mean when you ___?" If he has to ask for instructions more than once, he tries to write stuff down so he doesn't have to do it Again. 15. How do they speak? Is what they say usually thought of on the spot, or do they rehearse it in their mind first?

Lazare definitely tries his best to think things through before he says them. He's known English for a long time and feels like he can adequately express himself in it. He picks his words carefully and overexplains things so he's not misinterpreted, because it drives him nuts to be on the receiving end of someone not getting something as well, especially when the thing they're not getting is Him As A Person. As a result, while he's not a slow talker, his cadence will kinda speed up and slow down. Probably "um"s and "ah"s a bit more than the average person. He's not hard to hear, his voice carries well, but he is conscious of his volume-- he's gentle while still animated and expressive in tone at the same time. I think living in the States (especially the Midwest) has made him feel like he has to Sound Friendly. He does complain about stuff to others a lot, he'd probably explode if he didn't, but the complaints are usually still filtered and he tries to be kinda funny about them when he can be. When a person or a particular conversation with a person really starts resonating with him or getting him excited, then he kinda loses his hold on himself as he steps into the moment more fully and the thoughts tumble out before he can stop them. Sometimes he's apologetic about it later. No matter what, he's always talking with his hands at least A Little Bit.

16. What makes their stomach turn?

Physical things: mold where it shouldn't be, leeches, most of the other things I can think of are pretty common things for people to gag at, wet dog smell Thoughts/concepts: catching himself acting or thinking like "the old him" always makes him feel like throwing up.

Questions for creators:

A) Why are you excited about this character?

Lazare learns a lot of lessons that I desperately need to. His story is very comforting to me as a perfectionist-- there are two distinct things going on with him that really soothe me and compel me to write about him:

He fucks up. Badly. But he manages to come clean to his family about it and start turning things around.

But in some ways, he overcorrects. He still goes a long time feeling lonely and like what is at his core is undesirable/ruined and like there's a lot that he doesn't deserve and that he's gotta do something to make up for continuing to Exist. Eventually, though, he meets people who are capable of imparting "you are still a person, having your own fun and Wanting Things From Others is NOT a crime" in a way that he's able to actually take to heart.

Like... IDK. I haven't catastrophically failed the way he has, but the possibility has been looming over my head for forever, especially now that I'm in college, where what I do actually... y'know... matters. He's also, like, outwardly tender and the Edge comes later, which is sort of the inverse of a lot of masculine characters in the Big Media that I've seen-- I like "asshole with a heart of gold" characters when they're done right, obviously, I have at least one of those too, but that's just it-- there are SO MANY.

B) What inspired you to create them?

Honest to god, this guy just appeared. Over the course of nearly eight years, granted, and he's still appearing, but yeah. I set out to RP a BLU Spy with some headcanoning and I didn't last a month doing that before Lazare came to life and I had to just run with it. I think the thing that really started him in that direction was going "well what if Spy had anxiety???" And then I put cute glasses on him and then and then and then

And now Lazare is completely divorced from TF2. I cannot put him back in there, he won't do it, he refuses! Going back to that kind of life just isn't a choice he'd make. I think "French and wears suits" are the only remaining things he has in common with Spy.

E) Are they someone you would get along with? Would they get along with you?

We'd so totally get along. I'd get along with most of my characters, but with Lazare in particular, we could hang out and shoot the shit for a while, I think. I hang out with 40somethings pretty regularly IRL, I've always gotten along with my parents' friends and enjoyed them. Lazare also is not bothered by younger people, though he does kind of obsess over making sure he's being a "good influence." Our music tastes and other interests overlap decently, and he knows how to keep a conversation going, which is all I really need. We're both curious and appreciate others who have that trait, so there's that, too. I feel like I'd inevitably say some Young Dumb shit that he'd just nod politely at, but yeah, I think he'd like talking to me too :)
