this game is so mean to Luke actually it's unreal so I made a meme to cope
(spoilery ramblings about that under the cut)
ok so first off Luke basically witnesses Layton's "death", sure it ended up not being true but that is still so fucking traumatic for a 13-year-old to go through, and then much later at the storyteller's tower Luke for a split moment thinks he lost him again and idk man that's scary.
(Also the fact he tries to stay strong in front of Phoenix and believing the spell could be reversed or that Layton could be alive but when reunited he admits he was sure and actually SOBS i'm-)
(also also umm uhhh they just bring the gold statue of Layton into the fucking court and he just??? yells????? also the motherfucker pawning his arm I am so-)
(Luke was also slamming his hands onto the witness stand so hard so much I am a little concerned sir please take care of yourself)
AND THEN THERE IS THE FACT THAT HE BARELY FUCKING SLEEPS???? LIKE I WENT AHEAD AND MADE LIKE A MINI TIMELINE AND
the gang are stuck in labyrinthia for about 5 days and 4 nights (the final trial ends with the sun coming up)
how much does Luke sleep you ask? about maybe like half a night.
night 1 he is helping Phoenix defend Espella and then helping Maya find Eve that same night, the sun is up by the time they find her.
night 2 is when Layton got golden statue'd and spent all night crying and (presumingly) didn't get a wink of sleep.
night 3 is when the chapter 4 ends and 5 starts, there is investigation dialogue at the market where Luke says it is dinner time. Phoenix spends an unknown amount of time trying and failing to sleep so he goes talking to Rouge, which Luke eaves drops so he most likely did not sleep much either. He finally fucking sleeps after that though
(and later says "I'm recharged and ready to get started, Mr Wright!" that morning. I don't believe this.)
night 4 he is with Layton investigating the storyteller's tower and later with Layton at the court.
his 13-year-old ass did not sleep well Jesus Christ.
#mar does a meme#professor layton#professor layton vs phoenix wright#luke triton#layton games are vaguely mean to luke to varying degrees (with azran legacy being the most mean imo)#but the crossover takes it to a whole 'nother level goddamn#capcom rlly said ''nah child needs more trauma''#my boy has gotten so much hurt please give him the comfort

So Iâve been getting back into the professor layton fandom ever since the new game announcement and thought Iâd draw an old oc I havenât touched in a while.
This is Priscilla Fernsby! She has a full backstory but Iâll try to sum it up as best I can. Basically, she was born in stansbury but moved to monte dâor at a young age when the city was only starting to grow. She became a very anxious person growing up as the city grew in tourist, being around crowds of people would quickly overstimulate her.
During the events of miracle mask she accompanied the Professor, Luke and Emmy on their investigation of the masked gentleman by her parents request after they were being asked question about their task. She didnât want to in the beginning, but would slowly warm up to Luke and the others. By the end of miracle mask, Priscilla would bring up the courage to tell her parents of her troubles living in monte dâor and they would all move to London shortly after for a fresh start.
She would still on occasion go on adventures with the Professor and co. Living in London, she would continue to improve on her social ïżŒanxiety ïżŒand learn to make new friends along the way.
So thatâs the main gist of things, Iâll hopefully be posting more of her in the future.
I hope you liked reading about her, sheâs one of my only ocâs that Iâve really spent a lot of time with and she means a lot to me! đ

hershel layton is such a fascinating character. like this man has been through trauma. His parents were kidnapped (his mother died, he never saw her again. his father turned evil). his older brother swapped their identities so that hershel would be adopted into a loving home (this older brother become an antagonist in half his adventures). he lost his best friend in an archaeological exploration (this best friend returns several years later and only wants revenge). he lost the love of his life through a time travel accidentâŠtwice (because of the time travel). he dodges his own death numerous times. this guy has been through so much but at the end of the day he dons his silly little top hat and solves his silly little puzzles and continues his life as the personified :-) emoji

FINAL ROUND
Propaganda
Jean Discole: (Via @mistresshasty; tw kidnapping)
Saw his parents kidnapped. Violently. Then he was left alone with his kid brother to report this to the police when he's all of 8yo. This man's name isn't even Jean Descole. Descole is an alter ego for his other alter ego, Desmond Sycamore. Why? Because he GAVE HIS NAME AWAY to his younger brother so said younger brother could be adopted in his place after their parents were kidnapped. Like legit, people came and said they could only adopt one kid and Descole straight up said, yup, my kid brother, this is Hershel, not me, nope (shut up Theo, you're Hershel now.)
Then fast forward to adulthood where he's finally healing some of the Trauma, only for his wife and daughter to die mysteriously (though its heavily implied it was by the same people who kidnapped his parents.) Then, as he's getting his revenge on that organization, guess what? The leader is his long lost father who went crazy after his wife (Descole's mom) died in captivity. Descole has 0 chill because he has had 0 breaks in life.
Oh, and one last kick in the face. The titular character of the series, and Descole's arch nemesis, Professor Layton, yeah, that's the kid brother Descole gave up his future for. He deserves to be a dramatic bitch. He's earned it.

i'm thinking about pl andâlike alwaysâi get emotional after anything regarding this series. these stories. the ebb and flow of cherished laughs and pained expressions, the give and take of funny dialogues and heartbreaking reveals. when the end credits songs just wash over the entire experience with additional thoughts (usually angst-y in my case). when you've realized the story you just witnessed and the story that you felt apart of will stay with you for times that seem ephemerally immemorial...
[Slight Miracle Mask and Unwound Future Spoilers near the end]
these games don't show happiness and sadness. they don't show the positives and negatives of how a scene should flow. they don't just have dialogue and action and tone and intonations.Â
they have perseverance amidst tragedy, the rose within the thorn, the sun within the bleak clouds. they show that everyone in this series is human. they somehow made me feelâand not in some type of pity wayâfor those npcs who were stuck on what i thought was the easiest puzzle in the world. there was no humiliation, no real sense of judgement. there was respect and patience and... and there was disappointment, only in one's self. there was no invalidity of emotions. yes, there were invalid actions, but i don't have a single memory of anyone saying another character was stupid for feeling a certain way. there was passive acceptance all around and across the series, there was no stuck-up sounding laughter; no one (to my memory) ever called another stupid for messing up.
and hershel layton is one of the most human characters i have ever seen.Â
i saw a fanart that consisted of hershel in different stages of life. it made me emotional, because:Â
in each stage of his life that was depicted there⊠it wasn't growing up. it wasn't milestones of age, it wasn't certain accomplishments in his character. it showed each time he has lost someone. and god does it break my heart to see and realize that he. is still. here. the amount of pain PL characters have gone through just breaks my heart.
and i am so glad and so honestly inspired to know that. and i feel so awful for thinking my problems are bad when i look at the greatest person to ever exist in media ever, who was shaped by traumas far beyond my own. and that is not an understatement: i genuinely believe professor hershel layton is my favorite character in any media. because he and his games tell you that there is more to life than pain. and it is a lesson that i am so glad that i can finally see someone else tell.
miracle mask and unwound future are two of my favorite games because they're the games that tell the audience that he is human. it reveals how he despisesâhe loathes, he hatesâ⊠not emotions. no, not sadness, not regret, not remorse, not disappointment, not pain. no, none of that.Â
he hates certain parts of himself. he hates how he dealt with grief. he hates it when he's shown with "proof" that he's gone and done the very thing he swore not to ever do. he doesn't even hate anyone else even though he has so much right to. he should've cussed out bronev off screen. he should've yelled at bill hawks. he shouldn't of saved clive but god what did he do. he saved clive. he saved randall.Â
oh, how love is a weapon. this is it. this is one of the greatest examples of how love is a weapon in storytelling. it's not even platonic love between the characters, its the love the audience has for the characters. stories like these twist this and they do it well. but, anywayâ
when i was younger, i thought hershel layton was foolish. i thought he was stupid. i used to think: "what is he doing? someone hurts him, why doesn't he want to hurt them back? what's wrong with him that he doesn't want revenge?"
i couldn't of been more... wrong about how he sees the world.
no, he's the one of the greatest persons i've ever seen in media. i've learned so much from him and the PL series as a whole. i've learned something from each and every character. [what i learned from bronev and bill hawks is just to not be them.]Â
layton is the kindest person i've seen. there is no earned malice anywhere near him. he doesn't purposefully aggravate others. he isn't mean, he's not one you'd call angry. he's patient and understanding, and he was made from pain.Â
if every person was at least a little bit like him, i think the world would be a better place. a place where no one has to be made from pain.
#sorry i'm rambling#heal's ramblings#parts of this were typed in discord and i'm just pasting them here so others can see it#and so my one friend who reads it all doesn't have to be alone#professor layton#hershel layton#miracle mask spoilers#unwound future spoilers#lost future spoilers

The Person Within: An Analysis Of Professor Layton's Hidden Character Development
Spoilers for practically all of the Layton games!
Hershel Layton as a character is sometimes criticized outside of the fandom for having no personality other than his gentlemanly nature and taking the concept of enjoying puzzles to the extreme.
While I think this criticism shows a blatant misunderstanding to his character, I do think from a different angle that perspective makes Professor Layton more interesting.
Think about it. Most of his personality is taken from the tragedy of those around him. Randall was the one who was originally obsessed with archaeology and puzzles. Claire was the one who originally perceived Hershel as a gentleman (thus giving him the idea.) We donât really see Layton take these aspects of his personality onto himself until tragedy strikes and these people are taken away from his life.
In the case of Randall's death, Hershel blamed himself for surviving and moved out of town because of his self-loathing and guilt. And when Claire disappeared Layton paused his studies for an unknown amount of time trying to find out what happened until he was beaten into a coma by a group of people associated with her death.
And yet instead of grieving like youâd normally expect from a person who lost his best friend and girlfriend, he internalized their interests and aspects of their personalities into himself. He wears their passions and dreams as his own to remember them. In a way, heâs always reminding himself that he couldnât save them.
However one might wonder how Layton really feels about those things outside of his previous losses. Does Layton even enjoy archeology and puzzles? Or is it something he has grown to accept in his life simply because he is living out Randallâs dream? Does he feel like he has a choice in the matter?
I can easily imagine Layton having doubts deep within himself: Randall didnât get to live and itâs my fault. His dreams should live on. I donât deserve anything else.
Same with Claire. She saw him as a gentleman but he certainly didnât feel like one after her disappearance if his memory of events is to be taken seriously. How long did it take for him to turn into the perfect gentleman? Especially if it's just a painful reminder of her loss?
Itâs probably after waking up from his coma that he starts to really embrace the idea that he has to be the perfect gentleman because he knows he can never get her back. So all he can do is embrace what she thought of him before she died. So with all of this in mind is Laytonâs gentlemanly persona genuine to who he is as a person? Or is it just a persona created in order to keep her memory alive?
Layton has kept the shadows of his lost loved ones close to his heart for years and probably would have always done so had he never gotten any closure. However, when Randall turned out to be alive Layton now has the opportunity to let go of that guilt. Claire came back in the future momentarily and Layton got to say goodbye. He no longer needs to keep their personal traits as his own.
So why does he still embody Randall's passion for archeology and puzzles and Claire's perspective that he's the perfect gentleman?
I think it's because Layton doesn't know who he is without these borrowed parts of his personality. Without those aspects that he adopted into himself⊠who is Hershel Layton? Deep down he is someone who has silently mourned his loved ones and repressed those emotions. And yet most of his life has been embodying said grief. It makes me wonder if Layton would ever look deep within himself and realize that he doesnât have anything to claim as his own. His entire personality revolves around past guilt and trauma from people he loved and lost.
Shoot even his name isnât his own! Hershel Layton was actually the name belonging to his brother and in a moment of sacrifice switched names so our Layton could be adopted. So our Layton loses the only family member he has left without even knowing who that is for the majority of his life!
So we have a man who feels guilt and remorse for the deaths of his best friend and his girlfriend so he doesnât allow himself to develop his own interests and personality because he doesnât feel like he deserves to be his own person. It's even implied that he believed for a time that he didn't deserve to be the one who survived the events that killed his best friend and girlfriend. And then adding to the fact that he never knew his real family so he most likely felt a different kind of loss by not knowing where he came from. All and all we find a man that feels alone and tries to make it right by embodying the traits of those he cared about.
We donât get to see Layton develop his thoughts on all of this but we do see an interesting development later on. Iâd like to think that Layton slowly began to heal after his adventures thanks to adopting Katrielle in the anime.
This is because, for the first time in Laytonâs life, he had a family to look after. Someone who doesn't need a mystery-solving archeologist or a perfect gentleman detective. Someone who doesn't need the grand "Professor Layton." This little girl just needs someone to be her father and, while he tries his best, he doesn't really know how to do that.
Sure he had a familial relationship with Luke and Flora, but he never called himself their father. I donât think he allowed himself that privilege because of all the self-loathing he had been dealing with before. When he adopts Kat it feels like itâs the first time we see Layton truly allowing himself to be a father figure. And yet he is still uncertain about if he should be the one in this role.
Layton feels like his adopted daughter should know where she came from (something he didnât get to have) before he can start thinking of himself as a father. Heâs scared that if he gets attached then it'll hurt worse when she eventually returns to her own family should she decide that is her wish. But if he finds her family first then he doesnât have the go through that heartache. He wants to find them first so she can make an informed decision.
And he says this with the logic that he always had as âProfessor Laytonâ with that calm and collected smile. Notice that he says "I want to solve this puzzle so that we can become a true family." He doesn't say "so that we will become a true family." Itâs almost as if he is going to let Kat decide if she wants to stay with him or go back to her real parents and that choice will be up to her. However, it's somewhat implied that he already thinks that she would naturally choose her real parents if she had the opportunity.
Despite his wishes to be her father, he still seems to be internally preparing himself to say goodbye (hence why he disappeared for so long in the first place.) He just doesnât want to get too close to another person only to lose them and suffer alone again.
It makes sense why he is distancing himself, but heâll still solve the mystery. It's what âProfessor Laytonâ would do and heâll have to accept whatever happens once Kat learns the truth. He doubts that she would still see him as her dad if she could be with her real parents. He doesn't even know himself outside of the role of "Professor Layton" so how can he be a true father to her? She'll go away with her real family eventually anyway. Why would anyone choose him?
And yet when he sees her again Layton is surprised when she immediately cries out for him. She still calls him papa. She wants him to be her papa.
In a public display of overwhelming emotion, we see Layton openly weep for the first time. He is so overcome by these emotions and for once doesn't repress them. He's just so happy to see his daughter again (to truly call Kat his daughter again) and allows himself to fully express those feelings for perhaps the first time in decades.
If Layton from the original game trilogy saw himself like this he would have been mortified by this âun-gentlemanlyâ behavior. His mindset back then was that a gentleman never cries because he has trouble coming to terms with his emotions. He even chastised Luke in Unwound Future because âa gentleman never makes a scene in public.â
However, he was never a gentleman for himself. It was always for holding onto the guilt of losing his loved ones while trying to honor their memories at the same time. But he doesnât have to hold himself to those impossible standards anymore. He no longer blames himself for their deaths, he found closure, and now he has found himself in a family who chooses to love him not because of those attributes âProfessor Laytonâ embodied, but because she loves him for the person hidden under that persona. And that is enough for Layton to openly weep as he embraces his child.
I believe Kat's words here helped Layton more than she'll ever know.
So who is Hershel Layton if heâs not a gentleman or a fan of archeology?
The solution to that puzzle is really quite simple.
He is a caring person. And thatâs all he ever needs to be.

Apparently some Ace Attorney fans donât like this Plot Beat in the PLVSAA game? Like, they feel that it disrespects Phoenix or puts in on a lower rung of importance compared to Layton? But I really disagree, I have some other issues with PLVSAA, but this moment? Thatâs a perfect Phoenix Wright moment that shows a real understanding of his character and his appeal.
Because Phoenix Wright always shoves his nose right into the center of stories where he was not supposed to be in. Thatâs what heâs been doing since the beginning.Â
Just look at the plot of the very first game! Itâs all about Manfred von Karma and his Big Ass Weirdo Grudge against the whole Edgeworth family all two of them. In many ways, even if the AA narrative doesnât typically use that framing - Manfred is kind of a Storyteller in a way, creating the Story of Miles Edgeworthâs tragedy and patricide.Â
And in that âStoryâ, Phoenix was a minor character at best. He was just an ordinary kid who knew Miles for a few months in fourth grade, Heâs not tied in with the Family Drama, he doesn't have any obvious special talents or anything. From any outsider's perspective on Miles' whole life, there's no reason to think his 4th Grade Best Friend would by in any way Important for anything but Tragic Flasbacks. But Phoenix put himself into that narrative. For him, Milesâ kindness and friendship for these few months of childhood are just as important as anything in Manfredâs Story.
He got himself into law and shoved himself right into Miles Edgeworthâs story despite how ridiculous it all is. And so, even as Manfred disregarded him as just yet another unimportant interchangeable Defense Attorney to be crashed under his heel - didnât even remember his name and face- Phoenix was still the one to defeat him. Even as Manfred left the courtroom still cursing Edgeworthâs name - Phoenix has made himself, by choice, into the Hero of that Story.Â
Miles and Maya would be Main Characters in anything related to the DL-6 mess whatever theyâd like to or not, itâs just tied-up so heavily into their life and their traumas. Phoenix is the one who chose to be a Main Character in that Story.Â
And thatâs something that kind of repeats with a lot of the narratives Phoenix gets into. Because heâs, like, the one AA character without a Dramatic Backstory outside of the Class Trial, Phoenix is usually either playing backup to the real main characters of the narrative - or once again, making himself the Main Character out of sheer determination and love and desire to help others and choice.Â
And doing it again in PLvsPW, establishing that he and Maya butted into both the Storyteller and Darklawâd Stories just because they were both driven and curious and kind and wanted to help Espella so bad⊠thatâs just perfect, especially for a story all about Stories thatâs just perfect.
The thing that I keep thinking about is the few times AA has Stories that are definitively about Phoenix without him butting in or stumbling into someone elseâs Story. âJustice for Allâ is one, but it doesnât really have a Grand Overarching Narrative. Itâs more of a Phoenix Wright Character Study via a series of vignettes. The AA game that really has Phoenix at the center of a Story is âApollo Justice: Ace Attorneyâ.
To continue the PLvsPW metaphor, AJAA is really the game between a bunch of rival Storytellers - PLvsPW had Arthur Vs. Evelyn, AJAA has Kristoph Vs Phoenix. Kristoph weaved a Story with Phoenixâs downfall at its center - and Phoenix waited until he had the chance to return the favor. I mean, I dunno, maybe my metaphor is a touch stretched but⊠Hobonick really is the closest thing to the Storyteller in the mainline AA games. The final AJAA case is almost literally him âdesigningâ a trial for his own purposes.
And the interesting thing is how controlling and railroading he is as a Storyteller figure. For someone whoâs based his own entire damn life on defying the Stories and plans of others, he really does not let his own âMain Charactersâ - least of all Apollo - that same sort of metanarrative agency.Â

If I had a nickel for every time I had a character who was an english puzzle enthusiast turned unwitting detective with an L name that isn't his own, childhood trauma, and an estranged brother, and where the plot involves some kind of identity hijinks and swapping with the brother in some way, and he is assisted by a redhead and a child and one of them has a name which means 'of light/light-giving', and he at one point goes to visit his school mentor who taught him about puzzles as part of an investigation, and there is some angst about how he has no significant other or family and he's a terrible driver
I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot but is better than no nickels at all ig anyway go play professor layton and watch ludwig

In the ever approaching 20 years I've been on the internet, I'm genuinely surprised that Trauma Center never really took off outside of Gentle Breeze (this song that was in every other YouTube video in 2010).
youtube
It's understandable that this game doesn't have the mainstream following of fellow flagship DS titles Ace Attorney and Professor Layton or its Atlus brethren of SMT, Catherine, or Persona, but what I don't get is how this series doesn't seem to have any sort of cult following. I don't know of anybody who has heard of this game, let alone is openly a fan of it despite its supposed success and despite the universal recognition of this one track. What's even weirder is that Atlus seems to have completely forgotten about it too. It saw the release of five games across six years with the last one releasing for the DS in 2010, and that was the last we ever heard of Trauma Center.
The series has almost never even seen a rerelease of any kind since then. Only the final game Trauma Team was available digitally on the Wii U eShop (which was shut down last year), PC ports of that game and the others don't exist yet, and the last two entries never even came out in Europe. Officially speaking, this series is exclusive to the DS and the Wii, several console generations behind us now.
I've never played a single game in this series and otherwise I have no attachment to it whatsoever, I don't even really know what kind of game it is. I just think it's really, really weird that I have never overheard anybody talking about Trauma Center, ever. I may have seen one piece of fan art on Twitter and that's it, and I don't even remember if that actually happened

many virtual miles anon here! thanks so much for answering my ask and for the cute doodle omg i cackled out loud. i'll be sure to peep your instagram to see that goodgood sonic art. and at your request! i'll let u know that my ship back in the day was clive and hershel himself! at the time i didnt see why it might be a little controversial since they were both adults over 21 and clive wasn't luke (nor do i think hershel ever thought he was luke, logical guy that he is), but as ive gotten older i better understand why some people are squicky about it. i still think it's more okay than some ships though? and has potential to be really sweet and healing, or messy in a troubled villain reformation sort of way... im still fond of it, when it's portrayed the way i like! anyway yeah that one's mine, u dont have to even publish this LOL i just wanted to answer the little question in your tags!
so i read this ask right away miles anon, and im so glad you took the time to write it bc YEAH theres nothing like illegal going on, itâs dubious at best (and when i say at best this is secretly a double meaning because the ship is also at its best when its a little dubious).
i think the best part about them is the relationship between clive and his identity as âbig lukeâ, like both the player and hershel start and end the game with a very vague understanding of the difference of his character when performing for the future london and when heâs at his lowest before heâs arrested. and because of that, it leaves his cry for help as hard to parse. is he genuine? is he feigning (maybe not maliciously but as a self preservation or an attempt to leave layton with the thought of helping him)? and if it is genuine, which is the most charitable and probably intentional outcome, is his and laytonâs shared trauma too vast or deep to reconcile? is he in the mental position to enter a relationship?? i dont know, its all so interesting, itâs like cliveâs final line served to solidify himself in laytonâs mind as a person whoâs worth saving, and better yet, that the only person who can do so is him.

Average Layton plot line includes a mystery object and or person. Probably a dead mom/wife/sister/daughter/neice/grandma etc. Middle aged man who needs therapy. Really cool underexplored part of canon. Trauma. Evil bad guy who may or may not be tied to Laytonâs past. Weird magic thing that somehow has a rational explanation.

Just this once, I'll do a meme, but I'm going from all sorts of time periods in my life. Propaganda under the cut, but here's the poll:
Characters (in order of options)
not tagging anyone, take your shitty propaganda and pick a blorbo
Emma Wilder: This is a character from one of the two movies I imprinted on as a middle schooler, the other movie was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. She bonds with a sentient rabbit toy from the future, I think, and her and her brother run a race against time and the government to send Mimzy (the rabbit) back home.
Nora Valkyrie: She's ginger, she's a goofball who wants to be taken seriously so bad she scars herself about it, and she has a giant fuckoff grenade-launcher-hammer. It was over before it could even began. It was either her or Ruby Rose.
Elmo: I bonded to this little monster as an elementary schooler, and specifically to Elmo in Grouchland. You can rip this little shit out of my cold dead hands, and you can rip his blanket out of his.
Larry: Specifically from the older veggietales, cause they changed his model in recent years, and I fucking hate it! But he's silly, he plays a tuba, he moonlights as Larry Boy the toilet plunger hero, and he cohosts the show with his good friend and buddy Bob. Him AND Bob are the OG blorbos.
Tricky: THE ULTIMATE NEVADEAN CHAMPION. He's a horror show abomination in most contexts, he's also a funny little fucker, and not even God can make death stick. He's a very funny chewtoy, and I go fucking insane about him with the context of Hofnarr in play.
Bibble: Because I couldn't just pick seventeen Barbie characters. I picked ONE. So I'm picking the funny little jabbering guy.
Janus Sanders: Spent several videos being an ominous little shit who wouldn't even tell us his name, and proceeds to do a heelturn-faceplate directly into camp villain city. Cheese bucket shithead (/affectionate).
Alfindi: (yes he's my favorite. Some of you won't be surprised. I am pointing a nerf gun at you.) He's a smartass, he's got trauma, he dunks on the criminals, and I want to put him in the pear wiggler.
Harley Quinn: I spent 5 minutes running up to goons and bonking them with the giant fucking hammer while cackling hysterically as a kid. All variants are valid but SHE is my OG. Shoutout to her and Ivy <3
