Space Seed

So I met Khan (not the Benedict Cumberbatch whitewashed version)! The episode was good, lots of good dialogue, a solid plot and an uncertain ending (kofkof uncertain for them).

The toxic masculinity vibes were off the charts though:

First, I'm not commenting on McGivers instantly falling for the hyper masculine guy, accepting his abusive behaviour and choosing to stay with him; because if I do, I'll get mad. But you know, it's terrible and I hate it.

Then the admiration for Khan, "the best and most dangerous of the tyrants" expressed by Scotty, Bones and Jim. Sigh. Of course it's all three of them, the only one out being Spock ("Illogical"). We're supposed to take away that it's because he doesn't feel the human/manly appeal of courage, ambition, greatness or whatever. Honestly not even IC? (sorry but I don't want to picture Jim and Bones as real life fans of Napoleon lmao they are the worst)

SPOCK: Gentlemen, this romanticism about a ruthless dictator is KIRK: Mister Spock, we humans have a streak of barbarism in us. Appalling, but there, nevertheless. SCOTT: There were no massacres under his rule. SPOCK: And as little freedom. MCCOY: No wars until he was attacked. SPOCK: Gentlemen.

MCCOY: Well, either choke me or cut my throat. Make up your mind.

Instant classic

MCCOY: Well, there aren't any regulations against romance, Jim.

Jim thinking he and the bridge crew were dying and recommending commendations in his log? Him being in the decompression chamber being murdered? I was on the verge of tears then

A Taste of Armageddon

Wow the plot's heavy but powerful. The whole episode is dark but hopeful ending! (plus pissed off Jim is v sexy)

Death, destruction, disease, horror. That's what war is all about, Anan. That's what makes it a thing to be avoided. You've made it neat and painless. So neat and painless, you've had no reason to stop it. And you've had it for five hundred years. 

I've given you back the horrors of war. 

Ending a 500-year war is just one of many things Captain Kirk does!

And of course:

SPOCK: Captain, you almost make me believe in luck. KIRK: Why, Mister Spock, you almost make me believe in miracles.

This Side of Paradise

OMG OMG IT'S HAPPENING THIS IS NOT A DRILL!! SEX POLLEN!!!

The perfect mix of fun and tension in this episode! Loved it!

Jim's confusion at Spock is everything. When he says "Spock" - clears his throat - "Mr Spock"

Jim being his dramaqueen self "In effect, I am marooned here."

Jim's immunity is his sense of duty what a goody two-shoes (affectionate)

The idea that anger/strong emotion is necessary ties up nicely to The Enemy within

Then the scene... You know which one... Did I have to pause because Jim was being so mean to Spock it was a bit much to watch? maybe!!

SPOCK: You did that to me deliberately. KIRK: Believe me, Mister Spock, it was painful in more ways than one.

My heart!

SPOCK: Captain. Striking a fellow officer is a court martial offence. KIRK: Well, if we're both in the Brig, who's going to build the subsonic transmitter? SPOCK: That is quite logical, Captain.

The scene between Layla and Spock was lovely too!

MCCOY: Well, that's the second time man's been thrown out of paradise. KIRK: No, no, Bones. This time we walked out on our own. Maybe we weren't meant for paradise. Maybe we were meant to fight our way through. Struggle, claw our way up, scratch for every inch of the way. 

This after the reference to Milton two eps ago! Yes! Yes to all of this!!!

Besties I'm aware that it's been like a couple years(???) since I've posted any oneshots or any kind of writing on this blog but listen in the wise words of the fanfic writers before me, my life has been crazy.

But I'm coming back! And I would love your help with getting started again! I already have some ways of getting myself started with ideas, but I would love your ideas too! Whether they're oneshots, headcanons, or just random ramblings that you want my thoughts on, I'm ready for it all and my ask box is looking mighty tempting, isn't it?

PSA: I am a white woman. The majority of my writings will be "x reader", and they will usually be fem!reader or afab!reader too, so if you wish for me to write for a gn!reader, please let me know in your request and I will honor that to the best of my ability!

I will also always try to be as vague as possible with other details such as race, hair color, eye color, etc., unless I happen to be writing an OC character with a specified appearance. But I imagine sometimes I'll make mistakes. I'll kick myself for it and I'll say sorry a million and one times, but it's almost inevitable and I'm an idiot and proofreading? whats that?? and I want to prepare you all now. And, if I do make a mistake, or if my writing ever seems to break that promise of being race vague, please let me know what I've done wrong and I will always try to alter what I can so everyone, regardless of what their race or appearance is, can feel welcome, accepted, and included in my writings!

Dune: Part One Prompts

Not for the first time is Kirk forced to ask himself what he truly knows of these people. Only what is written in the texts by those that have attempted to carve a hole through them. There is no curiosity in the words, it is purely scientific in a way that reads like a dissection.

It is telling.

He thinks of what he's come to learn in the few days he's spent here amongst them in a brittle peace. How many times did he chide Spock that not everything could be learned in a book, yet fell into the same mold. He relied upon what was comfortable, and because of it, he is falling short.

Kirk has not yet earned his way, and though he can tell this makes them hesitant to him. His time is borrowed on the back of a promised ally. Though, to earn his place would be a fight to the death, senseless without challenge. A robbery of the people he's trying to know.

Logically, he knows it is necessary.

His hands are clasped behind his back, to still them from reaching out and touching anything as they pass, or offering things to the children that are seen - determined to be brave or seek a glimpse of an outsider, whose eyes are so blue they suspect he's one of them, save for the white still visible around them - hide behind their mother's legs, or immediately dart back out of view into familiar outcroppings.

Mostly, it is her side he is kept to: Layla El-Faouly. He catches her eye every time he does something that marks him considerably as an outsider. Tugging at the neck of his stillsuit, a gift from her people that is not yet broken in or comfortable against his skin. Even shielding his eyes from the unrelenting sun. It did not matter if he came from a desert planet of his own, it paled in comparison to Arrakis - whose sand was lighter and reflected heat worse.

It reminded him only how much comfort had been taken for granted, and how ashamed he was of the thought of returning to the house they were to occupy. It was fitted with large tanks to store fresh water so the S'Chn T'Gai household would not go without. His cheeks colored with it now, but could be mistaken for his fairer skin becoming overheated.

"Often," He starts to speak, surprised when his voice cracks from disuse. Nothing is wasted here, not even words. "I think people mistake cruelty for power. They think it instills servitude, but only breeds rebellion." A shrug, he should make another pass here, stress the importance of the alliance he's come to foster, but doesn't. Nor does he show his own scars from such cruelty, but he does give, just a little. "I know of their cruelty too. They took my brother from me, and maybe his death was a kindness, considering everything he went through before it, but it doesn't make me any less angry about it."

Water burbled and sighed outside -- Steven was using the term 'outside' with some irony at this point -- apathetic to the destruction it caused. Like space, the world beneath the waves of Dorian 9 was deadly. Over 1.1 kbar of pressure was unfriendly to the majority of known sentient lifeforms.

For now, their trio -- Layla and an injured Bolian whose suit read Takach -- had circulated oxygen and was free from flooding. Steven looked up from the communicator he was fiddling with while they continued to walk through what had been flats, quarters for someones. Interference made their connection with the Enterprise, waiting in orbit, tenuous at best. Specialist Burnham was on the other end of the line. Weary and sodden as he was, he smiled at Layla. She didn't go on away missions often. Would she want to again after what had occurred hours before?

Excited chattering of ensigns and cadets amongst the bustling sounds of Dorian 9's underwater city turned to screams in an instant. Shrill klaxons and red lights didn't completely blare out the creaking failure of metal and glass around them. Freezing water flooded inside, bringing the kelp forest with it, bioluminescent blues-greens swaying almost hypnotically. Marc reacted with reflexes built from a lifetime of battles and further augmented, snatching the body from Steven to tug Layla away from the chunk of structure falling where she had just stood.

The ground shifted, tilted in a downward slope beneath their feet. "To the lift!" Marc yelled to those in the group who were alive to hear it, scooping Layla into his arms like a kid instead of a being far older than himself. He weaved and slid down what had been an open space minutes ago, jumping over gaps that would send them to a sudden drop.

They were just kids. Disoriented. Confused. Crushed, imploded, various shades of blood on crisp science blue. Nothing left to send home. Steven's heart ached, feet determined to continue on. They had to keep moving. Their lucky break wouldn't last for much longer. Steven's plan to walk in their dive suits across the ocean floor to what had been a retired service station was a long shot. Debris continued to fall from above, drag them further below. Tidal waves, tsunamis, the like…Why had there been no warning?

His thoughts turned to the living. "I'm sure they'll make it," he said encouragingly to Layla and Burnham. A likely unwelcome and unneeded reassurance. A reminder that Kirk, Spock, and Uhura were in danger as well. "They're clever. Been in rougher situations than this." Steven never could lose optimism. Nobody was gone until the life signs were lost (and even then). The Captain, Kirk, and Uhura's signals pointed up. Towards air. Towards life. That had to mean something.

Caught up in the tide of his thoughts, Takach drifting in and out of consciousness on the body's back (Marc's problem), Steven becomes unstuck in time. "Be back on the Midnight before we know it." He can log his reports, call Mum…

Jake gently tugged him backwards. They trail off, hardly breaking stride, suit boots on flooring, brows creased. "Spector here," Marc says for Burnham's benefit, watching Layla's expression out of his peripheral vision, his fingers unconsciously reaching towards hers. Her half up curls, he noted, were tangled and drenched.

Marc winced. "Yeah…" Let's not go down that rabbit hole or throw a 'told you so' party. "I've been called 'paranoid.'"
