july 23 - taipei to yilan
Today we took the party bus to Yilan! I don’t know what I would do without the bus. On the way we went to the Baimi Wooden Clog Village (museum) and the Kili Bay Pearl Milk Tea before we went to our hotel.
Our first stop, the wooden clog village, had us begin with a game. Three clogs were fused together and people in our group had to work in teams of three to walk in the clogs back and forth in the front lawn of the building. The goal was to beat the other team of three! Then we went inside and got demonstrations of what the clogs felt like and how they are used. The one with diagonal cuts and set at a 45 degree angle really hurt my feet and the stretches with it were so painful but it felt good after.
Upstairs, they then took us through how to make little clog keychains! We got to stamp patterns into leather using these metal sticks and then color it with some kind of leather stain and paint. I put an elephant with a heart and water being sprayed on mine and colored it green and gold. I wanted to use the white paint more but it was so hard to work with and I almost ruined part of my pattern.

After our tour through the history of clogs we went to the Kili Bay Pearl Milk Tea place to create our own boba! Once we were done, we made our final trip to the hotel where we found out that the rooms were not created equal. Floor 3 was about half the size of the rooms on floor 7 and didn’t have a shower. Instead it had the traditional two bathtubs for an onsen experience. The entire bathroom was also covered in glass on two sides with a curtain providing privacy between the room and it. Unfortunately, the curtain did not cover the whole glass wall resulting in a vertical slit right where the toilet is where someone outside can see inside.
The bathtub was honestly pretty nice but having to hold the shower head to take a pseudo shower beforehand was definitely not fun.

Academic Reflection
Before I came to Taiwan, many people encouraged me to drink as much boba as possible while I was here. Abroad, I think one of Taiwan’s defining features is their invention of the drink. According to our National Geographic readings, it was first created in the 1980s out of the traditional tea houses Chun Shiu Tang and the Hamlin Tea Room. The true inventor of the drink is controversial because neither side can prove they were the actual first. Their court case was never decided on who invented it because the judge concluded in 2019 that it was “irrelevant” due to it not being patented. Back home, I love getting boba from Tan Cha in Gainesville and various shops in Washington so it’s been so nice having inexpensive boba for once! Usually I would be paying 8 to 10 dollars for just one drink, but here it ranged from less than a dollar to 3 which is so much more affordable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clogs also have a long and rich history. Baimi, the village, boasted a local clog industry but disappeared after the craft began to lose popularity. What’s left of it has been preserved in the Baimi Clogs Museum. Unlike in Europe, clogs in China and other Asian countries don’t cover the whole foot, rather they are made of wooden bases with a leather strap to adhere the foot to the base. According to the museum tour guide, the first clog was made to scale a mountain. It had two vertical blocks of wood that could slide in and out of the wooden base. The front would be taken out to climb the mountain while the back would be removed to descend. This would help with fatigue by keeping the foot at a tangent position to the body despite the steep terrain. My mom gifted me a three set of little decorative clogs from the Netherlands (?) after her trip there! Seeing the difference in shape between the Taiwanese ones and the European ones was so interesting and I now have another little clog from our keychain making experience to add to my collection!

Things To See Around The Catacombs
The underground Catacombs of Paris are a popular tourist attraction known for their underground labyrinth of tunnels and skeletal displays. If you're visiting the Catacombs and would like to explore the surrounding area, here are some things to see:

Luxembourg Gardens: A short distance from the Catacombs, these gardens offer a tranquil escape from the bustling city. You can stroll through the well-manicured lawns, admire the Luxembourg Palace, and relax by the fountains.
Pantheon: Situated in the Latin Quarter, the Pantheon is a neoclassical mausoleum that houses the remains of several distinguished individuals, such as Voltaire, Rousseau, and Marie Curie. The building itself is an architectural marvel worth exploring.
Sainte-Geneviève Library: Adjacent to the Pantheon, this historic library is known for its stunning reading room and extensive collection of books. It's a great place to appreciate both the architecture and the intellectual atmosphere.
Notre-Dame Cathedral: While it is currently closed due to restoration work following the fire in 2019, Notre-Dame Cathedral remains an iconic landmark in Paris. It's worth visiting the area to admire the exterior and take in the surrounding views.
Jardin des Plantes: This expansive botanical garden is located close to the Catacombs and offers a variety of attractions, including beautiful flowerbeds, greenhouses, and the National Museum of Natural History. You can explore the gardens or visit the museum's exhibits.

The small engine market, which encompasses engines typically used in lawn and garden equipment, portable generators, pressure washers, and other utility equipment, is influenced by several key drivers:
: With an increasing focus on home improvement and landscaping, there's a surge in demand for lawn mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, and other outdoor power equipment. This trend, fueled partly by the growing interest in gardening and backyard beautification, directly impacts the small engine market.
: As urban populations grow, there's a greater need for efficient maintenance of public parks and green spaces, increasing the requirement for commercial-grade small engine equipment. Additionally, smaller living spaces in cities drive the demand for compact, portable power tools.
: Advances in engine technology, such as the development of more fuel-efficient, low-emission engines, are driving market growth. Features like electronic fuel injection (EFI), reduced noise levels, and better durability attract consumers and commercial users alike.
: Stricter emissions standards, particularly in developed markets, are pushing manufacturers to develop cleaner and greener engines. This has led to the growth of electric and hybrid alternatives alongside traditional gasoline engines, expanding the market's scope.
: Small engines are widely used in construction equipment such as portable generators, air compressors, and concrete mixers. An upswing in construction activities worldwide, particularly in emerging economies, fuels demand for these engines.
: The increasing frequency of natural disasters and power outages has led to a rise in demand for portable generators equipped with small engines, especially in residential areas.
: The need to replace aging equipment also contributes to market growth. As older equipment reaches the end of its lifespan, users look to upgrade to newer, more efficient models.
: The do-it-yourself (DIY) movement encourages homeowners to undertake maintenance and renovation projects themselves, thereby increasing the demand for small engine-powered tools and equipment.
: The proliferation of online sales channels has made it easier for customers to access a wide variety of small engine products, contributing to market expansion.
These factors collectively propel the small engine market forward, shaping its evolution and responding to changing consumer needs and environmental imperatives.

The beautiful Arlington Wood in Hampshire hosts a stunning display of delicate blue blooms from April to early May.
In addition to their online shop, the couple run flower workshops and small weddings on the farm. They’re also exploring the possibility of bringing in bees to help with pollination.
Having previously worked in the world of high level project management, Marianne Mogendorff and Camila Romain dreamed of a ‘good life’ that included a more grounded, nature filled work-life. So in 2017 they swapped the office for the countryside and opened Green and Gorgeous flower farm. They offer flower growing and floristry courses for beginners and professionals. In the spring there are bright tulips, roses and stocks; in summer meadow favourites like cornflowers and poppies are in full bloom; and in autumn rich dahlias can be found.

This android's createor, Jhasen "Lawnjart" Cooper, died this week after a long illness. He is survived by many friends and his robotic child, who will have to hospitalise many, many children in order to uphold the Lawnjart family name: "An estimated 6,100 people have been treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries involving lawn darts from 1936 through 1978."

SEE: Moody Indie Rock | Ducks Ltd. - “Heavy Bag” + Tour Dates
Tumblr media
Toronto’s Ducks Ltd. today shared their moody, slow-burning new song “Heavy Bag,” the fourth and final pre-release single from their forthcoming album Harm’s Way, out February 9, 2024 via Carpark Records. “It’s about despair and the way that misery loves company. The way that when people are in a bad place they try to undermine the people who are down there with them. To keep them and hold them there. It’s an incredibly ugly impulse, but one that if I’m being honest I’ve caught myself indulging in the past,” explains singer/lyricist Tom McGreevy. “We tried to do something we hadn’t done before on this one musically, and had to kind of reverse a lot of our instincts in building the arrangement. But it felt like what ultimately suited the song. Macie Stewart and Briar Darling ended up improvising a lot of the string layers at the end which had some really exciting results.” “Heavy Bag” arrives on the heels of additional album tracks “Train Full of Gasoline,” “Hollowed Out,” and “The Main Thing,” which saw praise from Billboard, Brooklyn Vegan, Consequence, Paste, Pitchfork, Stereogum, Rolling Stone, and Uproxx, among many others. Harm’s Way is available for pre-order. See “Heavy Bag” below: Following a handful of previously announced dates that include a February 8th hometown record release show at Sonic Boom, Ducks Ltd. will meet up with Ratboys in late March for a two-week U.S. tour. The band will then head overseas in May to play throughout Europe and the UK. A current itinerary is below. Ducks Ltd. make inviting and frenetic guitar pop for when life feels overwhelming. While the band’s songs are ostensibly breezy, a palpable anxiety boils underneath that communicates something deeper about everyday existence. On Harm’s Way, the duo of McGreevy and guitarist Evan Lewis hones in on interpersonal and societal collapses, urban decay, and the near-impossibility of keeping a level head when everything around you seems to be falling apart. Even with its often dark subject matter, Harm’s Way is Ducks Ltd.’s most vividly rendered and collaborative collection yet. It’s an undeniable evolution for the band, not just in how these songs soar, but in their entire writing and recording processes. Composed on tour while supporting acts like Nation of Language, Illuminati Hotties, and Archers of Loaf, the album displays the band’s finely tuned songcraft and well-earned, road-tested confidence. The band, fortified by this strong sense of sonic identity and a self-assurance in their new material—and in contrast to their acclaimed 2021 debut LP Modern Fiction and their 2019 EP Get Bleak, both self-recorded and self-produced in a Toronto basement—wanted to bring Harm’s Way to life in a new city, with an outside producer, and with some of their favorite musicians. Working with producer Dave Vettraino (Dehd, Deeper, Lala Lala), they enlisted a marquee cast of Windy City collaborators to round out the tracks on Harm’s Way, including: Finom’s Macie Stewart (violin, string arrangements); Ratboys' Marcus Nuccio (drums on most tracks); Dehd’s Jason Balla (who helped arrange the backing vocals, to which he also contributed); and backing vocals from Julia Steiner (Ratboys), Nathan O’Dell (Dummy), Margaret McCarthy (Moontype), Rui De Magalhaes (Lawn), and Lindsey-Paige McCloy (Patio). The band’s touring drummer, Jonathan Pappo, and bassist Julia Wittman also appear on the LP. Harm’s Way is Duck Ltd.’s most intuitive and organic album yet, the result of keen observation, self-possessed songwriting, and a collaborative spirit. Building on the successes of their previous releases, the deeply relatable album displays a band operating at a nuanced, lyrical and musical best. Ducks Ltd. 12 Garden Landscaping Tips For Fire Safety
In the tranquil suburbs of Sydney, homes nestled amidst lush gardens, creating a serene picture of suburban idyll. However, beneath this veneer of tranquillity lies a lurking threat – the menace of wildfires. These raging infernos, driven by fierce winds and scorching temperatures, can transform peaceful neighbourhoods into scenes of devastation in a matter of hours and keep tree loppers Sydney busy.
The devastating bushfires of 2019-2020 left an indelible mark on Australia's collective memory, serving as a stark reminder of the destructive power of wildfires. These uncontrolled blazes swept across vast swathes of land, leaving behind a trail of charred landscapes and shattered communities.
In the face of this ever-present threat, safeguarding our homes from the ravages of wildfires is an urgent imperative. A crucial aspect of this endeavour lies in creating a fire-safe landscape, a protective perimeter around our homes that can mitigate the risk of fire damage and serve as a buffer against the onslaught of flames.
By implementing strategic landscaping practices, we can effectively transform our gardens into bastions of fire resilience. These measures not only protect our cherished properties but also safeguard the lives of our loved ones, creating a haven of safety amidst the unpredictable dance of nature.
Clear Away Dead Vegetation
Dead leaves, twigs, and branches, collectively known as "duff," act as tinder for wildfires. Regularly remove dead vegetation from our yard, including fallen leaves, pine needles, and dry grass. This will help create a defensible space around your home.
Space Plants Strategically
Choose fire-resistant plants for your garden, such as succulents, groundcovers, and low-growing shrubs. Avoid planting highly flammable plants like conifers and eucalyptus near your home. Maintain adequate spacing between plants to prevent the spread of fire.
Create Barrier Zones
Establish fire-resistant barrier zones around your property. Use hardscape materials like gravel or pavers to create pathways and walkways, breaking up continuous areas of vegetation. Consider planting fire-resistant shrubs or groundcovers in these zones.
Maintain Lawns and Vegetation
Keep your lawn mowed and well-irrigated. Healthy, green grass is less susceptible to fire than dry, parched vegetation. Regularly prune and maintain shrubs and trees to remove dead or diseased branches.
Store Flammable Materials Safely
Store firewood, propane tanks, and other flammable materials away from your home and in designated areas. Ensure these items are properly secured and not easily accessible to sparks or fire sources.
Install Emergency Water Supplies
Have access to a reliable water source for firefighting purposes. Consider installing a sprinkler system or a water reservoir near your home. Maintain hoses in good working condition to ensure they are ready for use in an emergency.
Keep Gutters and Roofs Clean
Regularly clean gutters and downspouts to prevent the accumulation of debris that can ignite. Trim branches that overhang your roof to prevent sparks or embers from landing on your roof.
Create a Defensible Space
Establish a defensible space around your home by removing flammable materials and maintaining a clear area of at least 30 feet between vegetation and your house. This will create a buffer zone that can slow the spread of fire.
Be Mindful of Fire Sources
Exercise caution when using outdoor grills, fire pits, or campfires. Never leave these unattended and ensure they are completely extinguished after use.
Stay Informed and Prepared
Stay up-to-date on local fire warnings and advisories. Develop an emergency evacuation plan for your family and practise it regularly. Create an emergency kit with essential supplies, including first aid items, non-perishable food, and water.
Collaborate with Neighbors
Work together with your neighbours to create a fire-safe community. Share information and resources, and coordinate efforts to maintain fire-resistant landscapes in your neighbourhood.
Seek Professional Guidance
Consult with a landscape designer or fire safety professional to assess your property's fire risk and develop a customised fire-safe landscaping plan. They can provide expert advice and recommendations tailored to your specific needs.
Crafting a fire-safe landscape is an essential step towards protecting our homes and families from the devastating impact of wildfires. By adopting these practical landscaping techniques, we can significantly reduce the risk of fire damage and create a more resilient outdoor environment.
Remember, fire safety is not a one-time effort; it is an ongoing commitment that requires vigilance and proactive measures. Let us work together to safeguard our communities and embrace the tranquillity of our gardens with renewed confidence, knowing that we have taken every precaution to protect our homes from the fiery menace that lurks beyond.

The New York City suburb of Scarsdale, located in Westchester County, New York, is one of the country’s wealthiest communities, and its residents are reliably liberal. In 2020, three-quarters of Scarsdale voters cast ballots for Joe Biden over Donald Trump. One can safely presume that few Scarsdale residents are ardent backers of Trump’s wall on the Mexican border. But many of them support a less visible kind of wall, erected by zoning regulations that ban multifamily housing and keep non-wealthy people, many of them people of color, out of their community.
Across the country, a lot of good white liberals, people who purchase copies of White Fragility and decry the U.S. Supreme Court for ending affirmative action, sleep every night in exclusive suburbs that socially engineer economic (and thereby racial) segregation by government edict. The huge inequalities between upscale municipalities and their poorer neighbors didn’t just happen; they are in large measure the product of laws that are hard to square with the inclusive In This House, We Believe signs on lawns in many highly educated, deep-blue suburbs.
In a new report for The Century Foundation, I contrast Scarsdale with another Westchester County suburb, Port Chester, which is just eight miles away but has remarkably different demographics. Scarsdale’s median household income, in excess of $250,000, is nearly three times that of Port Chester, as is the portion of residents with a college degree. And whereas three-quarters of Port Chester’s elementary students qualify for free or reduced-price meals at school, zero percent of Scarsdale’s students do. In Scarsdale, 87 percent of residents are non-Hispanic white or Asian American, whereas 69 percent of Port Chester residents are Black or Hispanic.
On the overwhelming majority of Scarsdale’s land, building anything but a single-family home is illegal. According to data collected for the report by New York University’s Furman Center, just 0.2 percent of Scarsdale’s lots have structures classified as two- or three-family homes or apartments. Port Chester, by contrast, allows multifamily housing on about half its land. From 2014 to 2021, 41 percent of the new housing units authorized in Port Chester were for multifamily housing. In Scarsdale, none of the 218 units permitted was for a multifamily home. When multifamily housing is proposed in Scarsdale, residents raise numerous objections, many of them spurious. Some oppose apartments, for example, on the grounds that multifamily housing will result in overcrowded schools, even though data show that school enrollment in the Village of Scarsdale has been declining in recent years.
Many people seeking a better life for their children would, in fact, relish an opportunity to move to Scarsdale. In interviews I conducted for my new book, Excluded: How Snob Zoning, NIMBYism, and Class Bias Build the Walls We Don’t See, low-wage single mothers from across the country repeatedly expressed their desire for better schools for their children.
And as I note in the Century Foundation report, Scarsdale spent nearly $5,500 more per student than Port Chester did in 2020, and had lower student-to-teacher ratios. In 2019, 32 percent of Port Chester students were performing at grade level in English, compared with 87 percent of students in Scarsdale—a staggering 55-percentage-point gap. In math, 35 percent of Port Chester students performed at grade level, compared with 90 percent of Scarsdale students, also a 55-point gap. When low-income students are given a chance to attend lower-poverty schools, research shows they can cut the achievement gap with their middle-class peers in math by half and in reading by one-third over a five- to seven-year period. They just seldom get the option.
Television cameras help depict the plight of immigrant families who are turned away at the border, but they don’t capture the way working-class families in places like Port Chester are shut out of higher-opportunity public schools in places like Scarsdale that prohibit the construction of the types of homes that less advantaged families could afford. Although Scarsdale parents may try to reconcile the exclusion with their political liberalism by supporting greater state education spending in places like Port Chester, economic integration of schools has been found to be far more effective than a “separate but equal” compensatory-spending approach to equity.
By limiting housing supply, Scarsdale’s zoning laws—and similar rules in other New York City suburbs—also artificially drive up home prices in the metropolitan region. Earlier this year, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul proposed the New York Housing Compact, which would have given downstate municipalities, such as those in Westchester County, a goal of increasing their housing supply by 3 percent every three years. If communities failed to reach those goals, the state would require municipalities to provide applicants for housing permits with a fast-track approval process. In addition, downstate areas would need to rezone for greater housing within a half mile of commuter-railway and subway stations. Currently, in Scarsdale, nearly all of the land near the train station is zoned for large lots containing single-family homes.
But though yes-in-my-backyard reforms have gained traction in states such as California and Oregon and in cities such as Minneapolis and Charlotte, the liberal New York State legislature deep-sixed a moderate Democratic governor’s housing agenda—with the help of elected officials and civic leaders from affluent liberal suburbs. Amy Paulin, a Scarsdale Democrat, told The New York Times that Hochul’s “proposal would change the complexity of our county in a way that doesn’t make sense.” Westchester County’s Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the Democratic leader of the state Senate, meanwhile, rejected Hochul’s plan and called instead for financial incentives to encourage communities to voluntarily permit more housing.

You really wanna do this?
Okay. Lets do this. I'm going to break this shit down
Point. By. Point
Tumblr media
"Go back to where to came from- I’m living in my homeland. You go back to where you come from."
Where did Palestinians come from? From perhaps the Land called Palestine? Israel did not exist before 1948, when seven hundred thousand Palestinians were forced from their homes. Destroyed 531 towns, and more than fifteen thousand Palestinians were killed.
"Your oppressing so just go die- so are you saying every American person should die because America has oppressed Africans, and Native Americans- yet you only say Israelis should die."
The only people calling for the death of the "opposite" side is your side. https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cz2YVQJpff1/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
One of your own "news" anchors just admitted it was never about Hamas.
Ceasefire now- once the hostages are home, seems you don’t care about them but we do. Hamas has broken every ceasefire in the past, so no we won’t do it on their terms, we’ll do it once we get our people back.
Israel doesn't really seem to care about those hostages like you claim they do. They're bombing wherever they claim Hamas is sheltering. They've more than likely killed some of the hostages by their own bombs. Just like their killed their people when your military fired upon the Rave attendees with Apache helicopters and tanks.
Children are dying- rockets are falling on Israel and you don’t care. If you wanted to help the children you would force hamas to let them go to a safe space, but instead you allow Hamas to use their people as human shields to justify this war.
Who is target the children? Why are children dying? Who is killing the children? You wanna clutch your pearls about children? What about the NI-CU and preemie babies that Israel is letting die? (Reports are conflicting on whether they've all died or Israel allowed the UN into Gaza to save those babies) Even if Hamas was using the people of Gaza as human shields (and the "if" is doing a lot of heavy lifting) Whats your reasoning in the West Bank? Where people are abducted? Children are arrested? "We" don't "allow" anything. Hamas is not funded by "us" And Israel does not need Hamas, which they funded back in 2019 for the record, to "justify" it's genocide.
It's not a "war" it's a genocide.
(Israel is protected by the Iron dome, don't ever try this shit again. There are videos aplenty about the effectiveness of the U.S. designed and funded Iron Dome)
Israelis are white- most Israelis are from the Middle East, whether they are from Iran, Yemen, they are Druz, Bedouin etc. they are Ethiopian Jews , Moroccan Jews. Also European Jews aren’t white, not by European standards. As of now, Jews are the minority that revives the most hatred in the United States.
Ethnic groups
Jewish 73.5% (of which Israel-born 79.7%, Europe/America/Oceania-born 14.3%, Africa-born 3.9%, Asia-born 2.1%), Arab 21.1%, other 5.4% (2022 est.)
-source: https://www.cia.gov
Try again.
A lot of Palestinians don’t want a two state solution, they want to kill all Israelis and you don’t criticize them. You let them take down posters of innocent civilians, you let them cheer on our deaths. You let them attack Jewish people- and yet you call yourselves progressive.
youtube
There should not be a two state solution. It belonged to the Palestinians first. They deserve the right to travel, live, and thrive on their land. Israel colonizers have kicked them out of their homes, taken their land. They don't even let them be self-sustaining. You want to whine about victims of Israeli violence "taking down propaganda" instead of confronting the very real violence your "country" inflicts upon the indigenous people. No one cheers the death of anyone except the IDF.
The insanely stupid arguments I get for being Israel-
Go back to where to came from- I’m living in my homeland. You go back to where you come from.
Your oppressing so just go die- so are you saying every American person should die because America has oppressed Africans, and Native Americans- yet you only say Israelis should die.
Ceasefire now- once the hostages are home, seems you don’t care about them but we do. Hamas has broken every ceasefire in the past, so no we won’t do it on their terms, we’ll do it once we get our people back.
