LAWL REVIEW: 2-D

It's a Crimbus miracle, as Lawl Legendary has finally released it's 2nd moveset after almost a year! Mouse.AVI was a perfect start, so despite my lack of knowing anything about the soruce, I'm hyped.

Interesting playstyle.

The hold version of Electric Shock should not go on for that long.

Roller Skates feels like a weak burst movement tool.

Up Special reminds me of Spamton's in Lawl Beatdown.

The Fridge seems like a pretty useful tool.

Final Smash is pretty funny.

His stage feels a bit too simple.

Overall, I like this moveset, but it's not as good as the first.

So, there's a book called "The Kaiju Preservation Society". I read it for a book club and was kind of excited since the name sounds cool. Seriously, think about the premise, just give yourself ten seconds to come up with what the story could be about...

Okay, ten seconds are up.

I grantee your idea was a million times better then the actual book.

The MC works for a delivery app, which we spend 50 or so pages with, before he delivers to a friend who offers him a job with the titular company. MC goes to an alternate dimension where Kaiju real! MC does things like "observe kaiju from air ship", "drop hormone spray onto kaijus so they bone, from an air ship" and "watch Pacific Rim with the team because LAWL! We R self aware!" Then a bad guy pops up, tries to steal a kaiju to use it as a atomic generator, but gets thwarted.

The problem with the book is that the writing is just bad. All the characters are just "Snarky asshole" with little variation. One guy likes to talk about 'firebombing' and sticks it into every one of their lines. Another character is a hard ass, but don't worry, she's still a smart ass. The MC says "I lift things" in every chapter. It gets tiring.

I also hope your imagination muscles are strong, cause you're also going to be doing a lot of lifting as the author hates describing things. You'd think that'd be important, since you're making up your own cool kaiju and this is a high concept sci-fi novel, but the most we get is "The kaiju was the size of a mountain and had wings".

The book also relies on action scenes, which are just as bare bones as the characters and the kaijus. This book is famous for:

It's not to say everything was bad. When we got some actual science it was neat. I liked it when they talked about this alternate world's environment and how the kaijus played into that. Sadly, it was just a tiny nugget of interest in a big ol nothing burger. It reads like a first draft that the author just went "Good enough, I'm already a best selling author, they have to publish it!" and sent out.

So, me and my wife live in an apartment with a lobby. Often, people with put things they don't want in the lobby. That was were Kaiju Preservation Society went, a few months ago. While I was walking with my wife, I said I kinda wish we'd kept the book so I can do a riff/spork/MST/review/what ever term we're using for when we want to tear something apart and be funny about it.

Yesterday, when we came home from a trip, someone had put out more books. And one of them was, you guessed it, Kaiju Preservation Society.

one of my favourite fruits frr but i've been romanticising it so much that sometimes it just doesn't live up to the appeal. the strawberries here are so small and tasteless i havent had a huge chunky bitable one yet so until then, the review will be pending lawl.

I do but not often, partially because of the ace part of me that doesn't entirely get it from an emotional perspective lolol. I'm most comfortable with F/F but can reasonably (I hope lol) write F/M.

idk if I could choose just one !! part of me wants to say it would be a Stargate ship like Sam/Janet because Stargate is always the ultimate series for me but I feel like I'm biased bc I'm currently obsessed with them again. If this was the me of like ten years ago I would have said Swan Queen which is what I have written the most for but god OUAT and I are forever sworn enemies I just want to bully that series the way it bullied me. I'm going with Sam/Janet just because currently I would die for them.

What’s a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

I have a really good Friends with Benefit AU for Ivanova/Talia that I really want to finish and get out. A Soulmate AU for my bois Ted/Trent. A Heroes AU for Sam/Janet. Nothing has been published but I know they're waiting to be finished.

I enjoy when there are translations in the end notes for when I'm reading it but I also will otherwise put it into a translate service. I guess when writing I will keep it to simple phrases I know more than like full sentences? I'm not sure I have a strong enough opinion on this tbh

First fandom you wrote for?

zoowemama 100% was stargate - it was terrible and I'm so glad I have improved since because it was purely self indulgent but I think my first like ten fics were stargate, with maybe a twilight one or two.

Favorite fic you’ve ever written?

my extremely self-indulgent THG AU with Hayffie in the stargate universe. I just wish the stargate universe was as popular of an AU for other fandom works but alas that is what I get for falling in love with 90s scifi !! but this was so much fun to write and put easter eggs in and it was one of the first ones I wrote purely for me and less about what amount of hits/kudos/reviews/etc.

O.K. I finished listening to A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers and I am veery strangely going to say that I? liked it? a lot more than I thought I would, at least.

It goes like this:

1. hear about the book

2. listen to the book

3. "this is so bad. but slightly entertaining."

4. "this is still bad. but VERY entertaining."

5. le finish

I actually really liked it LAWL cause it was a WRECK all the way thru it just took some time for me to resign myself to it like fuck it. I have no reason not to listen to this. & the narrator's voice does help cause it's fun to listen to...

BUT the NUMBER ONE THING I HATED about this book was the way it was written sometimes. I don't have the like, written version at hand, but it would compare things / enumerate things VERY often & it got annoying REAL fast. I got over it though because that's my #1 power (overlooking things), so I didn't really care by the end.

+ ANOTHER thing I hated about it was this one moment where the MC is thinking back on the time she was raped and she's like "I was getting raped. Fascinating." like yeah it's stated like a BAJILLION times in the book that she's, like, a psychopath or whatever but it felt unnecessary, like it (the entire stalker-then-rapist) subplot was there to show how I don't even know, emotionless? uncaring? she was. It felt pointless as an "anecdote" because IIRC it doesn't really DO anything for the plot. She doesn't even kill the guy! Not saying she would because it's like a Thing that she only kills and eats men she is attracted to / has had a relationship with, but that's the point of what I'm saying: she tells us about being stalked and raped, she says it's "fascinating", she doesn't ever see the guy OR mention him again. It's probably half because it's upsetting to me but also half because it really WAS pointless.

My favorite part was her friendship with Emma tho that was very good 👍 & the end when she doesn't marry the guy because she sees herself being "good" and doesn't like what she sees, is a much better show of character than getting raped and going "wow". Sorry I'm hung up on that LOL it was just confusing.

A short Goldfish (cheddar flavor) Crackers review !!

I went 2 SnR with my mom n sibling 2 buy groceries, and then I saw goldfish back in stock. I havent had goldfish in years, so I wanted to try it out again for the second time. Cheddar was the only option, so I bought it and did some munching lawl

Here are some notes of my perspective:

I enjoy the thin but crunchy texture. It may give a good crunch but at least it wont damage my braces.

The cheese flavoring tastes kinda weird, but I aint complaining

AWWWW They even have the little smiles carved onto the biscuits 🥺🥺

In neither a positive and negative light, this is something you’d feed to a cat. (well, minus the flavoring, duh.

Overall score: 8.2/10

ARCHERY LESSONS

now this is complicated…. Because neither Apollo twins (Dave + Rose) know how the fuck to use a bow. Its more of,, them calling for their dad like “pls don’t let us fuck it up” and Apollo just kinda “okay be cool”

Like, Dave got more of the music aspect of Apollo, along with some healing and yk,, flocks (haha I’m so funny) and Rose got light, arts, and also a bit of healing as a treat. So idk why they’re expected to run the archery practice but they are!!! Because they’re kinda either the oldest Apollo kids, or simply the only ones,,

(Context on “the only ones” is just trials of Apollo, i imagine he’d be less uhh careless with the number of kids he has after THAT experience lol)

(Haven’t decided if canon should be canon bc,, that’d just make this a crossover but also TRIALS!!!!! anyways)

Chiron makes an effort to lead as many as he can, but he can’t exactly control when he’s needed elsewhere lol

the twins just kinda make sure to give offerings every night like “don’t let us fuck this up PLEASE” it’s great

Equius is a big enthusiast of these lessons, even if he isn’t very,, good? He tries but (like in canon) he just can’t get the right amount of pressure to put on it?

June is also surprisingly okay with a bow and arrow!! She’s just cool like that B)

Jade tried once and never again. Her hands were shaky and she almost shot someone’s eye out?? Didn’t matter too much to her tho, she’s much batter at hand-to-hand and sword fighting.

DND CLUB

now I kinda already said who has in the club, but I never rlly talked about it much!!! So here’s that

Review: dnd club is basically the flarp group, except restricted to dnd bc they larped too hard and Mr.D and the Apollo kids were tired of all the injuries lol!! Its Tav, aradia, vriska, and terezi, tho I might add more nerds in the future even though they’re not,, yk,, the flarpers

Anyways Vriska DMs and is so insufferable about it but they’re too into the story now to really give up?? Plus fighting so much can be fun sometimes

Theres also the honorary members, who r just spectators that come by to watch their friends play!! That would be June and Sollux lawl (might add more)

CAPTURE THE FLAG

ohhhh boy do these games get heated. Listen, okay, when you restrict a group of kids from hurting eachother while role playing, what makes you think they won’t take advantage of a game that is literally just that…

Vriska is the CTF equivalent to those try hard gym kids (being a daughter of Nike). She is just so extremely into the game it’s insane!!!

Hephaestus kids also kinda also go hard, yk finding an excuse to test out the stuff they make!! Dirk more than anything, and also to kinda test out his strengths n shit cuz he’s lame

Dave and Rose sit on the sidelines because,, healing and also they have an excuse to sit out so they WILL be sitting out

Gamzee is usually put to watch and guard the flag idk it just makes sense? He doesn’t mind tho, he just sits around and fends it off when he can.

Karkat and Feferi seem like the type that would sort of scout the area? Like, while someone guards the flag difectly, they stop any surprise attacks from a bit father. Feferi tends to stick next to the lake, and Karkat is just placed wherever (he is, after all, luck).

While I do think Terezi and Vriska would make such a good leader combo for CTF, I have a small little feeling that Mr.D already has them clocked and just does not let them team up because that is too many injuries!!!! It only reduces them by a bit tho, being on opposite sides simply making them a taaad bit more competitive

HORSEBACK RIDING

The amount of accidents is actually insane,,, though it’s more of bruising than anything that would need Apollo kid action.

I don’t even have to tell you the people who would have an absolute blast.

Nepeta and Equius hang out near the stables the most, but that doesn’t mean the pegasi are any less loved :3 Gosh, they are definitely pampered.

Dave probably falls off the most often — not because he’s not skilled, but because he forgets he has to actually hold on (It makes sense to me, trust).

June really really enjoys flying around. That’s not exactly a big scenario, I just felt like that needed to be included. She likes the freedom that comes with it!!

LAWL REVIEW: HARRY FREAKIN POTTER

First of all, despite my complete lack of knowledge about the source, this moveset realeasing out of nowhere was incredibly hype. Because the Empty Slot 1 characters have FINALLY all been done. Strap in, everybody. This one will be cool.

First of all, the opening lore segment was fun. I love seeing Mama get pushed farther towards villainy, and the characters hanging out is always great.

The playstyle seems interesting. I like more strategic fighters that aren't full-on zoners.

Neutral Special is interesting. I love how the default uses the dance animations, so they're not only caused by an assist trophy now. Same with being able to attract people without getting the random change on Cage or a stage hazard.

Two side special projectiles that limit movement in two days? Wow. This seems a lot more balanced than disc's nails. Plus it seems like you can use it to set up crazy gambits (why do i talk like this).

Up Special looks really funny.

Down Special seems like a fun pseudo-counter move.

Final Smash is pretty simple, but seems like it would be a lot of fun to mess with in free-for-alls.

Spinel's normals in the KO segments seem terrifyingly large.

Outro lore is great too. Love the Undertale and OFF-based segments. Plus, I always love seeing PBG.

AND THERE'S GONNA BE A BEATDOWN DIRECT ALL ABOUT THE EMPTY SLOT 2 RESULTS NEXT YEAR! SIGN ME UP!!

Overall, this is just another example of modern Beatdown's insane quality. I love it!

review: the near witch by v.e. schwab

so this book was…bad. according to the introduction it was the first book ve schwab ever got published, and it shows. the characters had a sense of urgency for each other than i didnt feel at all, certain “revelations” were predictable from far away (and not  in the satisfying “I WAS RIGHT!” kind of way, more like the “i could have told you this fifty pages ago” kind of way). and the romance was awful. i could not stand the romance, it was the worst part of the book for me, and even a believable friendship between these two characters would have been pushing it for me. they were devoted to each other in a way that made absolutely no sense given the amount of time they had spent together, and it overshadowed any enjoyment i could’ve had of the book.

i also really, really don’t understand why this was published under v.e. schwab and marketed as an adult book, rather than under v.e. schwab and marketed as a YA book. it might’ve curbed my expectations a bit if it had been, because i would have expected the ages of the characters (16) and not expected this to be something it wasn’t. but even then i’m not sure, because the monsters of verity is leaps and bounds above this in terms of quality for both the story and the characters, so it might’ve been doomed either way. obviously with this being her debut i wasn’t expecting something with the same caliber as vicious, a darker shade of magic, or monsters of verity, but i was definitely expecting better than what this was. overall, it’s not enjoyable.
