₊ ⊹🪻 ✧ ˚. ᵎᵎ 🔮
n.amaro x reader
summary: you were younger then nick by a couple of years, and sometimes he’d come over to your apartment after late nights at the precinct, he’d come over to just enjoy peace and serenity
content: fluff, reader is in school (2nd or 3rd year of college) suggestive acts (nothing extreme), age gap!, mentions of sexual abuse due to svu cases, nothing too triggering, just a fluffy one shot overall
super short
✧ ✧
it was late at night, you were working on an essay that was due by the end of the week.. you were getting strained and decided to take a break and call it a day.
You made yourself a quick meal, spicy buldak noodles, a sandwich and your favorite drink that was saved in the fridge. You prepared your meal as you were watching your favorite show. you were almost done preparing your late-night snack when you heard the doorknob shake.
You lived a pretty safe vicinity so the chances of a burgler were slim, but you still were vigilant about your safety, you quickly grabbed your broom and held it tight.
Upon your discovery, the door opened and you saw your boyfriend… nick.
You sighed of relief, and he looked at you worried
“Jesus Nick, you scared me!” “geez sorry, i thought this neighbor was safe?”
you put the broom down, “I mean it is but you never know” “yeah.. tell me about it”
he walked to you as you went back in finishing preparing your ramen, he went behind you and grabbed you hips and nuzzled his head in between your neck, kissing you, making you giggle due to his stubble
he continued and you moved your head slightly to give him more access, he took this as a sign to continue. You tried not to get distracted but you let a soft moan escape.
he laughed, and started moving up your body; cupping your boobs. You laughed and finally pushed him away
“stop Nick” you laughed “I want to eat, I’ve been working on an assignment for the past 5 hours.” he let go and laughed “my hard working girl, okay okay I’ll let you eat but next time, you’re all mine!”
you shook your head in sarcasm, he took of his jacket and unbuttoned his white shirt a couple of buttons down, and took off his shoes. He adjusted himself on your couch, and laid there with his eyes closed taking in the aroma therapy essential oils diffuser thats going around your room.
you look at him, now realizing that he’s here strangely. Nick stops by late nights most weekends or if it’s a weekday he’ll let you know earlier in the day if he’s stopping by, but it’s currently a Tuesday at 12:36 am.
“hey Nick?”
he hummed in response, most likely getting sleepy
“not to sound rude or anything.. but why are you here? It’s late on a Tuesday night, shouldn’t you be at your place?”
He opened one eye and looked over at you
“do you not want me here?” He said a bit suspicious
“oh god, no like yeah I do, but I just realized what day it was and you know you usually let me know when you’re coming over and it’s usually weekends you spend the night with me, I just found it odd you came to visit me tonight” “I love it when you’re here really”
you finally finished your ramen and took it towards the couch where Nick was, and started eating as you waited for a response.
he was hesitant in his answer, he seemed stressed and frustrated.
“today we had a tough case.. a rape case..”
you look at him attentively, making sure you are hearing him and that he has your fullest attention.
you nod in continuous
“and well… it’s about a 8 year old girl who’s after school teacher has been acting inappropriately with her.. you know like touching her where she shouldn’t be touched”
“oh my god” was what you let out
“yeah, and her home life isn’t easy, this one was a bit tough to work on dude to how young and bright this little girl is. I hate to see anyone take it away from her”
you put your ramen down and get close to him, caressing his hand.
“and being here.. with you just brings me peace. All is perfect here, so sorry i came unexpected but i really needed to see you”
you smiled at him
“awe baby, you know you are always welcomed here, I love having you here, never goes a day where I don’t miss you”
you make him look at you and caress his cheek, looking so attentively at his eyes, leaning in and kissing him so gracefully.
he takes you in, and guides a hand on your neck. You move to his lap and continue to kiss him, sucking on each others lips, and you slightly grinding on him
he groans a bit and you continue to bit his lip. You pull away with his lip in between your teeth and stare at him and run a finger across his now plumped lips
“thank you for coming over”
“thank you for having me”

Guys we really need to start paying more attention to law and order OC as well because its Elliot’s show and it allows us to see his side of the story so there are a few instances where Olivia makes an appearance and he asked her once “what is this” and replied “a friendship”. Another time he asks her about her relationship while he was gone and she replies “ seriously?!”. In OC he takes his chances to ask her around whenever he can but in SVU thats not so much the case because it’s Olivia’s show and we wont know how she feels unless she voices it out.

The A-Team
Fandom: SVU; Sonny Carisi x OFC
Emilia’s Masterlist
Summary: Sonny is nervous about his first solo trial and so his girlfriend tries her best to help him out.
taglist: @ocappreciationtag @arrthurpendragon @anotherunreadblog @maaaaarveeeeel @stareyedplanet @averyhotchner @foxesandmagic @kmc1989 @caplanbuckybarnes
Warnings: Due to the nature of the series’ plots, I do have to rate this as ‘mature’ for constant mentions of rape
Emilia was nose deep in her laptop when Sonny walked in through the door. Her eyes flickered up from the screen and watched him drop his things on the couch. He didn't need to say a word — Emilia could tell whatever work he had going on had been terrible.
"Should I get that wine bottle now?" She asked him. "Or we could go the other route and relax?"
Sonny gave her half of a smile but shook his head. He wanted to calm down before he ended taking out his stress on her. Emilia didn't deserve any of the crap he dealt with at work.
Emilia was intuitive, however, and so she continued the conversation. "It's bad, isn't it? What's the case?"
"I don't" — Sonny shook his head —"want to ruin our good streak."
Emilia snorted and chuckled. "Good streak?"
"You know — we had a good Christmas and New Years. We had good holidays…"
"And now we're both back at work," Emilia said slowly, giving him a rather 'duh!' kind of look. "That's why it's a vacation. It's like an escape from reality and unfortunately we are all done with that, so…" She closed her laptop and motioned him to take a seat with her at the table, "Why don't you tell me what the case is?"
Sonny still hesitated. With a sigh, Emilia rose from her seat and walked over to him. She was gentle when she helped him out of his jacket.
"What are you working on?" Sonny asked her instead. He gave her a soft 'thanks' as she folded his jacket and left it on the couch for him.
"Me?" Emilia mused. "Oh, you know, vacation's done and so online school started again. I'm just finishing up my first lecture of the semester. But c'mon, don't change the subject." She took his hand and walked him to the table to sit down. "What's the case?" She left him to go to the fridge.
"It's this woman — she left a big billboard message on the streets for everyone to see." Sonny eyed the books left on the table and felt even worse knowing he was interrupting Emilia's studies.
"Billboard?" Emilia closed the fridge door with a leftover bowl in her hands. They had made pesto pasta yesterday. "Ooooh, I saw that! We all did! Alice showed it to me at work a few days ago. You're taking up the case?"
"I guess I am," Sonny said, sounding like he was only just realizing the implications. Luckily, Emilia was quick to understand too.
"That'll make it your first case in the courtroom — on your own…" She popped the leftover inside the microwave and turned to look at Sonny. "That's the nerves, isn't it?"
Sonny nodded at her. "Monica — the girl behind the billboard — she's not making the case easy at all."
"Monica Russo? Yeah, we saw the whole thing online as well," Emilia crossed her arms. It had been a whirlwind of a mess concerning the girl making public accusations about a celebrity and then getting arrested herself. "God, Sonny, why didn't you tell me that was your case? It's been days since all that stuff came out!"
The microwave beeped three times before turning off.
"I didn't want to burden you, alright?" Sonny leaned back in his chair, taking the moment to actually start de-stressing from the day. "The things I see…"
"That's the thing, Sonny, you see them…" Emilia walked over to the table and set the pasta in front of him, "I just hear about them from you. It's very different. Sorry about the leftovers tonight…I was a bit stressed myself."
"You're heaven sent," Sonny assured her, reaching for one of her hands. He laced his fingers with hers and kissed the back of her hand. "Never forget that." Emilia smiled at him and handed him a fork. "What were you stressed about?"
"Ah, no, you don't get to change the subject on me," Emilia chuckled and returned to her seat. She opened her laptop and picked up her pen on the side. "I'm listening. Keep going."
"It's the usual stuff, Em. You hit the mark earlier — it'll be my first case in trial on my own. I guess it's just getting to me a bit more than I expected."
"Well, that's natural," Emilia said, taking down some notes in her notebook. "It's like my first day of teaching. Well" — she scrunched her nose — "except for the fact that I was nervous about handling 25 five year olds on my own and you're talking about rapists so…I guess it's not the same at all."
Sonny smiled at her despite her futile comparison. "I bet you were still very nervous."
Emilia hummed. "That I was. You'll be fine, Sonny. Eat, unwind, and then we'll go to sleep."
The only reason Sonny didn't protest was because of hunger. The pasta smelled delicious and he was truly eager to just forget it all until it was absolutely necessary to start thinking about it again.
~0~
Emilia knew something was wrong when she didn't hear from Sonny at all. The morning of his first trial, she had sent a few texts wishing him good luck — even a voicemail where she wished him all the luck in the world and reassured him that he would be fine — but he never responded. He was gone before her that day and she was back before him. With a quick call to Olivia Benson, she learned what happened. Emilia drove down to the D.A.'s office to find her boyfriend cooped up in his office. The door wasn't properly closed so she gave a light tap with her fingers and stepped inside.
"Hey there," she approached him with slow steps. The room was barely lit — it was a wonder how Sonny was managing to write on his notepad. "I was waiting for you to come home tonight…"
"Sorry, I was a bit busy…" Sonny mumbled, his pen working furiously on the notepad. Emilia eyed two crumpled balls of paper on the desk and wondered what he was working so hard on.
"I spoke to Olivia — she said the trial didn't go so well…"
"More like I got slaughtered out there," Sonny spat. He stopped writing and finally looked up at Emilia. "I'm writing my resignation letter."
Emilia's first reaction was to laugh. "You are not…!" The way Sonny was looking at her, though, made her stop altogether. "Stop — Dominick Carisi, you are not writing your resignation letter."
"Em, I'm gonna lose this case. Ms. Hadid already knows! She has her spies in the courtroom! I'm done!"
"No you are not," Emilia plopped down in an empty chair and leaned her arms on his desk. "You had a bad first day. It happens!"
"Yeah, but…Em, what if I'm not cut out for this?" The devastation in Sonny's eyes just imagining that he made the wrong career choice was heartbreaking. Up until now, he had always been so animated about his new job. It was what he wanted to do from day 1.
"Okay, Dominick, listen to me," Emilia reached for his hands and gripped them tight in hers. "Remember my silly little comparison before about my first day at my job? Well, I'm gonna use it again but just bear with me. There's a point." She scooted closer to the desk. "My first day on the job, I had 25 kindergarteners in my care. I was responsible for them — I had to make sure that they survived the day!"
"And you did it beautifully," Sonny said, prompting Emilia to snort.
"I wish! My circle time was a disaster! I had four of them draw on the tables while I was doing an art lesson! I miscalculated how much time they would actually pay attention and so they got bored and started drawing on the tables, others started painting on themselves because that's another thing — I didn't plan on how to give them the supplies. And then that same first day, one of my kids had an accident on the playground. It was horrible. I had to call the parents and…agh, it was just awful. A really awful first day."
Emilia let go of one of Sonny's hands to then take his other hand in both of hers, urging him to listen to her words.
"But do you know what I did? I went home and I came back the next day with a new lesson plan. I came up with a new art project, a better system to watch the kids outside — I learned and I kept going. And now here I am, trying to go for a new credential."
"And I am very proud of you for doing that," Sonny said, smiling fondly at her. She adored her students every day, even when some of those days weren't all that great.
"The point is you can't quit. If you did, you'd end up regretting it," Emilia said sternly, yet softly.
"It's hard knowing that I failed, Emilia…"
"I know it is, baby, but you can't stop now. You can still get up and try again. Do it better."
Sonny squeezed her hand, loving her more in that moment. "What would I do without you?"
"You'll never have to find out. So then, what time is court tomorrow?" Emilia let go of his hands and leaned back in her chair. "No school tomorrow."
"You do not have to come," Sonny said. As much as Emilia loved her job, she also loved sleeping in. She took advantage of her days off to the fullest and that meant getting up past noon.
"I want to see the bitch lawyer who's making your life miserable and, I don't know, trip her or something."
"Emilia—"
"On accident of course."
Sonny playfully rolled his eyes at her. He still laughed, though, which just gave Emilia more fuel to keep her story going.
Emilia soon rose from her chair and moved around the desk until she was standing behind Sonny's chair. She planted her hands on his shoulders and gave him a light massage. "I'm taking that resignation letter, by the way."
Sonny chuckled. "Sure. You can take it and go home to rest. I'll probably be in here all night."
Emilia shook her head. "I'll stay here, give you all of my support."
Sonny closed his eyes as she pressed a kiss on his temple. "I'd like nothing more than that but I know you're as tired as I am. Besides…" He opened his eyes and reached back for Emilia, tugging her around his seat while he scooted his chair back at the same time. He brought her down on his lap and pushed some of her long hair behind her shoulder. "I know you'll be there tomorrow and that means the world to me. And on your day off…"
"On my day off," Emilia agreed, "So are you sure I can't trip the bitch or something?"
Sonny rolled his eyes at her. "No, you can't."
"Damn. Fine, I'll settle for seeing you kick hers and her rapist client's ass."
"That I can try to do."
Emilia gazed at him fondly. "You'll be great tomorrow, I know it." Her confidence was unwavering and Sonny took it to heart.
He leaned forward and kissed her. However bad his day had been, one kiss from hers was enough to change it around.
~ 0 ~
Like promised, Emilia had been there for the next trial. She sat in the rows and watched Sonny handle the victim and the rapist in one go. She had never really been in a courtroom and truthfully she did not like the tension in the room. She couldn't imagine doing this 24/7. Sonny was right to only ever tell her bits and pieces about his cases, even as a detective it had always been somewhat of an unspoken rule.
But today Emilia was amazed by her boyfriend. He who was absolutely distraught with how the previous day had gone was now a very different, more confident, man throwing questions at the culprit. She was proud.
After the jury was sent out, Emilia stepped out of the courthouse to make a few calls and to give Sonny whatever time he needed with his colleagues. When she returned, she was a little lost. The courtroom was empty of course save for a few lingering reporters. She ventured the hallway until she came across the squad.
"At the risk of looking like a bigger idiot for just wandering around, could somebody please tell me where I might find my boyfriend?" she chuckled nervously.
"Might want to try the restroom," Fin said, "Or wait outside…"
Emilia raised an eyebrow at him, the idea donning on her in a few seconds. "Oh, that man and his weak stomach…"
The others chuckled.
"Where's the men's restroom?" she ultimately asked.
They were kind enough to show her the way. She got lucky as Sonny was just coming out of the restroom when she arrived.
"Hey," she hurried to meet him, "There you are! Are you okay?"
"Not really, no…" Sonny didn't hesitate to say, "Jury's been out for days."
Emilia smiled sympathetically. "Babe, it's only been 3 hours…give or take." Sonny actually stopped and checked the time on his watch. Emilia felt even worse for him. "Were you throwing up in there?"
"No…yeah…" Sonny sighed, "Waiting for the verdict, it's-it's different when it's your case."
Emilia laughed softly and offered him some gum. Sonny couldn't take it any quicker
"Oh, hun…" She stepped closer to him and touched his face. "If it's consolation, I think you did great back there. You definitely got that guy to show his real self."
"Thanks for being here," Sonny said, lowering his forehead against hers. Her mere presence had been enough to boost his confidence.
"Anytime," Emilia said, kissing his cheeks. "You want to take a walk or something?" But not a moment later, Sonny got the news that the jury had finally come back.
Their walk led them back to the courtroom. Once gathered together, they learned that the jury had found the defendant guilty. Relief washed over the right side of the courtroom as the defendant was taken into custody. Sonny looked back at the squad and more precisely his beautiful grinning girlfriend.
~ 0 ~
Later in the evening, Emilia walked out of the bathroom after a much needed shower and immediately smelled the delicious scent of her boyfriend's cooking. She practically floated to the kitchen.
"Okay, I thought we agreed on some take-out?" She laughed seeing Sonny busy in the kitchen. "My shower wasn't that long, was it?"
Sonny shook his head at her and lowered the flame of the stove. "I wanted to treat you right tonight."
"Me?" Emilia's eyebrows raised together, another laugh slipping through her lips. "You're the one who did amazing today. The take-out was my treat."
"I wasn't all that great with my moods," Sonny said, leaving the stove for a moment and walking up to her. He could smell her freshly wet hair's lavender scent. "And I just want to say thanks for sticking it out with me."
"You say it like I wasn't supposed to," Emilia said, taking his hands in hers. "Like I was supposed to let you wallow on your own. Never gonna happen."
"Oh, I know," Sonny said with a long sigh. He wrapped his arms around her and brought her body flush against his.
"We're like a team...except that I don't know the first thing about lawyering and I'm sure you'd lose your head trying to entertain 25 five year-olds." Sonny looked down at her then, making her laugh. "Yeah, who am I kidding? You're great with kids. You could probably do my job with your eyes closed. Not that you should because that would make you a horrible teacher."
Sonny couldn't help his chuckle. He was the lawyer but Emilia always seemed to know exactly what to say to make things alright. "Dinner?" He pecked her lips.
"Yes, please!" Emilia made to go around him but he caught her head and turned her back for another kiss, this one longer.
When they broke apart, Sonny mumbled a soft 'thank you' and tugged a pleasantly dazed Emilia into the kitchen with him.

Burn The Shadow- 2
Here is Chapter 2- This is a long one. I really wanted to establish Gia's past. Let me know if you're enjoying it!
Rafael watched Gia from afar for a moment. She hadn't seen him yet; he hoped his presence would be welcomed. He didn't think she should be alone for this. Though he wasn't quite sure why she was going to an execution. He thought perhaps she was coming to see a case to its end.
His peace offering had smoothed the choppy waters. They were friends now, but they hadn't reached the sharing of deep dark secrets. He didn't take it personally; even if he did, he hadn't exactly been an open book either. It had hit him a few weeks after they had buried the hatchet- it was the first time in a long time he had met someone that he wouldn't mind flipping through his pages.
After the Micha Green case, she had admitted that she didn't date in High School because she was so young. Her peers didn't understand her. Her first boyfriend had been in college and it was disastrous. It was the first real bit of information about her past she had offered up. He thought he was really getting somewhere, but Lewis taking Olivia had shaken her and she was back ro surface level information when he was dying for more.
They had gotten into the habit of meeting at Forlini's to talk about cases. He loved the way her mind worked. She helped him look at things differently. Her laughter when she said "I never thought I would utter the words 'use the gonorrhea', but here we are. Though I really thought you would be able to use it." She had also vehemently defended him when Amaro had given him a hard time over Alex Muños. Gia didn't like how he went after Barba, she felt strongly that he didn't deserve it. After the trial, she had stopped into his office with Coffee. She had set it in front of him with a smile.
"It's decaf, I figured you didn't need any more caffeine. Also, it's Irish." She pointed at the cup of coffee and as she turned to leave, he had asked her to stay. She nodded and sat down at his desk with her own cup of coffee. He was sure it was also a little Irish.
"Thank you for defending me."
"Rafaél-" It was the first time she had uttered his first name. She said it with the Spanish pronunciation and it stirred something in him that he quickly quelled. "I knew you would do the right thing. You just needed a little more time to see it. He was one of your closest friends. It's hard sometimes to see people for what they are when they are right in front of you."
Amaro had called him. Gia had been giving him the cold shoulder since that case. His aggressiveness really bothered her. Amaro was upset she was pushing him away. He was the only one Gia told about her unlikely friendship with the A.D.A. Amaro had seen the execution notice on Gia's desk. When Amaro had asked about it, she shut him down. He didn't know who she knew that was being executed, but, he knew she would need support. He had wanted to take her and she refused. So he called Barba and asked him to go.
Her stony expression crumpled into confusion when she saw him. "How did...why...how are you here?"
"Amaro called. He didn't think you should be alone."
"I-I can't" as she stuttered, some of the chips of her armor were falling away.
"Gianna." His use of her full name got her attention. "You don't have to tell me anything. I'm just here for you." She nodded. He could almost see her insides twisting. He thought she was going to turn around and leave. She had taken a few more steps toward him and then turned and looked back from where she came until he reached out and took her hand. "I mean it. I won't ask a single question. I'm just here for you."
"Okay." She whispered and he led her into the building. They walked silently once they were allowed in. He felt his hand pull when she stopped right outside of the door. "Are you sure you want to do this?" She gave him a slight nod.
"I have to." She had steeled herself. The armor was back in place. They walked into the room and she headed to the front row. Sitting there waiting was giving Barba anxiety. He didn't know how she knew this person. He hadn't had the opportunity to look up who he was. Amaro had called him with just enough time for him to get in his car and drive. He had arrived just moments before her. His head whipped to look in her direction when the name was read, "Gabriel Monroe ", but she gave him nothing. Her face was stone. As he was brought in, Barba knew there were only two options, cousin or brother. He was too young to be anything else. His final statement was only 3 words. "I'm sorry, Gigi." There was a slight twitch at the corner of her mouth, but so slight the only reason why Barba saw it was because he was sitting so close to her. It was the slowest and fastest thing he had ever witnessed. When it was done, she rose to her feet and placed her palm on the glass. The rest of the witnesses quickly left.
"Take as long as you need, Monroe." They knew her here. She must have come to visit, at least, often enough. When she heard the door click, he rose quickly when he noticed her hands trembling. "I'm sorry too, Gabe. You deserved so much better." His name was uttered with a sob. If Barba hadn't stood when he did, he never would have caught her when her knees gave out. He held her tightly to his body while holding the back of her head. As her sobs shook the both of them, they cut sharply through his insides.
————————————————————
Gia had used a car service to get there. Barba was happy she wasn't going to be driving home. They sat in his car in silence. Barba didn't know what to say. When her sobs had finally stopped, he put his arm around her and led her out of the building.
He glanced over at her a few times and she was fixed on looking out the window. He wanted to find words to make her feel better. The urge to ask questions was eating at him, but he had promised he wouldn't. He wouldn't break that promise. He had never been so agonized by silence. He turned down her street and parked in an empty spot.
"Why did you park?"
"I'm not leaving you alone."
"I'll be fine."
"I know, but I'm staying for a while."
They walked together in silence into the apartment building. The doorman had treated Gia warmly, Rafael could see the concern flash on his face when he saw her demeanor. It made Rafael feel a little relieved that she was in a secure building with people that knew her well enough to register concern if she didn't seem okay. There was a risk in both of their professions. It was a nice building, he was impressed. She lived right near Central Park.
He followed her silently down the hall when they got off of the elevator. It registered to him that Gia allowing him into her home was big for her. Her door was red. In fact, it was the only door that was red. It looked older than the doors on the other units.
The apartment was a large open space. When they walked in, they were in the living room. To the left of the door was a dining room area and behind the living room portion was a kitchen with an island in the middle lined with 4 high back stools. Cabinets were to the left of the island and formed and L shape that lead to oven, a sink with a dish washer below and a double door stainless steel refrigerator. To the far right of the kitchen were sliding glass doors that led to a balcony. The entire area was floored with a dark hard wood. The walls were painted a pale blue, so pale it was almost white. The cabinets were painted a darker blue.
He appreciated the simplicity of it. The living room had a couch that would fit 3 people, 4 if it was a tight squeeze. There was a love seat and a large chair that two people could fit in with a decent size ottoman. The wall in the living room consisted of built in book shelves that were almost completely full. Mostly with books, but also pictures, an impressive vinyl collection and what he assumed were momentos and memories from her life. He felt like he was intruding on some of the deepest parts of her.
"I'm going to go change. I'll be right back."
"I'll be here." Her eyes lingered on him for a moment and she headed down the hall that was between the dining room and kitchen. He could tell the wall color of the hallway was the same as the rest of the apartment. He wandered over to the shelves to look at the pictures. His eyes immediately went to a picture of Gia, Gabe and another boy who was older than the other two. It was clear from this picture that Gia was the youngest and the unnamed boy was the oldest. The boys both had a sandy blonde hair. Gabe's hair was cut short, while the other boy's was longer on top and had waves to it. They both had bright blue eyes. Gia's hair was a light ash blonde when she was a little girl, her hair now was a few shades darker, but still had an ashy tone to it. He had wondered if her curls were natural, they were almost too perfect to be. He couldn't help but smile at the wildness of the curls that framed her face as a child. Her bright smile was the best part of the picture. Her eyes were a stunning dark blue. It was clear the boys were brothers. Gia could definitely be their sister, but he wasn't 100% sure.
"He was my brother." Her voice was hoarse. Barba hadn't realized that he had been staring at that single picture for so long. He turned and looked at her. She was perfectly imperfect. Her hair had the wildness of her childhood and was secured in a messy bun on her head. She was wearing short black bicycle shorts, she must have put a baggy white t-shirt on, the hem of it was a few inches longer than the royal blue hoodie she had put on.
His eyes were dragged to her left thigh. She had a large tatto of an intricate black dreamcatcher over what looked like water color purple, blue, and light turquoise. He couldn't help himself.
"Nice ink Detective." Her cheeks grew pink, the paleness of the rest of her face made it stand out more. He gave her a small half smile which caused a ghost of the one to cross hers and then it disappeared quickly.
He watched her as she walked to the refrigerator and pulled a bottle out of the freezer. She pulled out two glasses and filled them half way with the amber liquid. She opened the refrigerator and poured some maraschino cherry juice into one. As she put the bottle back in the freezer she reached in a plopped a few ice cubes into what he knew was her glass. She drank it all of the time, bourbon with cherry juice. He teased her that she couldn't drink it straight like a grownup. She had said she wanted to enjoy her drink, not prove a point. She walked over to where the couch was and set their glasses on two coasters on the table across from the couch that was painted the same color as her cabinets, but it had white roses intricately painted on it.
She looked over at him. "How...how long are you going to stay?" He watched as she bit into her half of her bottom lip. It made him realize that she wanted him there because she truly didn't want to be alone, but she was too afraid or proud to ask.
"As long as you want me to." He watched her contemplate for a moment.
"Well you might want to get at least a little more comfortable." He walked over to the door and slid his shoes off. He took his suit jacket off and hung it on the back of a dining room chair and then removed his tie as well. He left his suspenders on, but rolled his sleeve up.
When he turned back around, she was sitting in the middle of the couch with her knees drawn to her chest watching him. He walked over and sat to her right so he could sit closer to her. He could see the wheels turning in her head. She was trying to decide what to say, how much she was going to let him in.
"The other boy in the picture is my older brother Grayson." Rafael put his arm behind her on the couch and turned toward her slightly.
"Are you close?" He asked tentatively. She nodded.
"He works in finance. He, my niece and sister-in-law live in the city. Like the super rich section of the city."
"You don't exactly live in the poor section of the city." She rolled her eyes at him.
"This apartment was my grandmother's. She passed away while I was finishing my Bachelor's. She left it to me and Gray. I told him we should sell it and split the profits. He refused. Our Grandmother lived here for a long time, after my dad had grown up. Gray said he wanted me to be able to live off campus when I started my Master's at Columbia. He also said that he didn't need the apartment. He was already really successful at that point. He thought that if he let me live here when I was working towards my doctorate, that I would stay in the city when I was done. He couldn't stand the idea of me not being close. He and I have always been close. He was nine when I was born. He made it his job in life to protect me."
"You don't have to answer this if you don't want to. What about you and Gabe?" She slowly let her legs slide down and away from her chest. She leaned forward and took a long drink from her glass and then leaned back and rested her head on the back of the couch and closed her eyes for a moment. After a few moments she opened her eyes again.
"Gabe had classic middle child syndrome. He was almost four when I was born. He had a hard time adjusting to not being the baby of the family anymore. I think it made it harder that I was the only girl. It wasn't until I was ten that we started to get along. I always felt like he hated me. I think becoming a teenager made him shift his ire from me to our parents and Grayson. Especially Grayson. He always thought Gray loved me more."
"What happened Gia?" She leaned forward again and downed the rest of her drink. When she was done, she shifted closer to him to on the couch, and then she put her head in her hands. He immediately felt guilty. He slid his hand down to the middle of her upper back and lighted rubbed circles on it. "It's okay, you don't have to tell me. I'm sorry I asked" She wiped her eyes before she sat up and sniffed. He kept his hand on her back.
"I want to. I need to. I can't...I can't keep this in. I've been so alone in this for so long." She swallowed and took a few moments to regain some composure. "Gabe was an angry kid and my parents, especially my mom, didn't know how to handle him. She was so hard on him when in reality, he just needed more affection. My dad wasn't as hard as my mom, but he wasn't great at showing affection to either of my brothers. Old school Italian. It didn't bother Gray. He was just built differently. It wasn't that he didn't love them, he just didn't know how to show it like he did with me. Gray had no tolerance for Gabe. I was the only one that ever stood up for him, even when he didn't deserve it.“ She paused and took a few deep breaths. He didn't dare say anything. He didn't want her to retreat again.
"When he turned 15, he fell into a bad crowd. He acted out. He was a completely different person. He shut me out and I gave up trying. When I turned 13, he showed up to my birthday party drunk. It was the limit for Grayson. They got into a physical fight and then he took off. My best friend, Elizabeth, Lizzie, who lived in the neighborhood, spent the night that night. Grayson was dating her sister Amy. They both felt horrible that my party had gotten ruined. So they said we were having an after party. They got a bunch of pizzas, we made ice cream sundaes and watched movies and had a dance party." She wiped a few stray tears away. "It was the most fun I had in so long. I was on an accelerated program at school. It was so hard. And Gray? He just wanted me to get to be a kid for one day. To him, what Gabe did was unforgivable. The morning after, Amy and Elizabeth walked home. A few hours later, their parents called checking to see when they would be home. I remember my father taking the call, but he didn't say anything. Gray and I were hanging out playing video games. He told us that he would be back soon." She took his drink and poured it into her glass and downed it. His hand was firmly still on her back. He realized that she needed to finish this story. She needed to unburden herself.
"They found Lizzie first." Saying her name out loud must have felt agonizing. She had paused and clenched her jawn for a moment. "She had been drugged, but they had given her too much and she overdosed. They said that she likely wasn't conscious to feel what they did to her. What they did to her made me sick. I saw her body." Another long pause with a deep breath before she continued "Amy was another story. It was weeks before they caught a break. They found this fort deep in the woods. Amy wasn't there, but there was evidence she had been. Lizzie's bag was there too. And there was evidence of two unknown kidnappers. The fort they found was one that I used to follow Gabe to all the time when we were younger. At 13, I couldn't even comprehend that my own teenage brother could be responsible for something like that. There were a handful of these forts in the woods in our neighborhood. When they found more evidence at a second one, I knew something was off. Gabe had been cagey and defensive for weeks. He refused to help them search. Gray was furious with him." Barba knew where this was going. She didn't have to finish, yet he knew there were things he couldn't possibly know that she needed to say.
"That night, I remember hearing Grayson crying in his room. I had never heard him cry before. I couldn't sleep. I had to dig through the vault of my brain to recall where it was, it was as a long time since I went following Gabe around. It was just before dawn when I heard my father in the kitchen and I went down and told him that Gabe had used those forts. They had found four of them, but I knew there was a fifth. It was so deep into the woods and well hidden. I knew they wouldn't find it on their own. My father called his partner and we met him and a few of the other detectives near the woods. He didn't tell my mother or Gray that we were going. He didn't want to get anyone's hopes up and he didn't want Grayson coming. He wasn't sure what we were going to find. When we got there, he had one of the officers take me home. They didn't want me to see either, but they needed me to show them where to go. Amy was barely alive when they found her. And what they didn't to her?" She was crying again and shaking. "I can't even say it, but it was horrific. Once they had gotten her out and secured the crime scene, my father came home and arrested my brother. He didn't want anyone else to do it. And when Gabe came down the stairs, he knew, he knew I was the one that led them there." She leaned forward and grabbed a few tissues.
"Amy died while in ICU. I almost think it was a blessing. If she had physically recovered, she never would have recovered psychologically from the torture she endured. It was sadistic" she shook her head. "As angry as Gabe was? I just couldn't see him doing something like that. He refused to give up who his partner was. My father begged him. The D.A. was willing to cut him a deal. He gives up his partner, the D.A. would take the death penalty off of the table. Gabe still refused. He said he wouldn't give up the only person that cared about him. My testimony put that needle in his arm tonight" Her hands were still shaking.
"Look at me." Gia shook her head. "Gianna Mira!" He said a little more forcefully. She slowly looked at him. He closed the small amount of distance between them and took her face in both of his hands and wiped her tears. "You listen to me right now. You are NOT responsible for this. He made the choice to abuse and murder two girls with his friend. He made a choice to not give that friend up. It was his choices that led to what happened tonight, not yours." She nodded, he stayed close to her.
"My mother, she- she told me that if I had said something sooner that Amy would still be alive. I was just a kid, I didn't know. When Grayson heard her say that? He was SO angry. It was the first time in his life he ever stood up to her. She backed off, but she never apologized. I don't think she's ever apologized for anything. She used to tell my dad and Gray that they were going to make me soft and I needed to be a pillar of strength. I was traumatized and she couldn't be bothered with feelings. She never saw Gabe again after he was sentenced. He was no longer her son. My father gave up on him too after a few years. The D.A. told him that if he turned his partner over, they would stay the execution. My father tried so hard to convince him, he just couldn't take it anymore. And Grayson? He didn't care that he was our brother, he would never forgive him. It is the only thing we ever fight over. I wasn't allowed to see him, my mother made that very clear. When I turned 18, he called me. He was an adult and time had made him remorseful. He told me that he never blamed me. He told me it was never supposed to go that far. He had just wanted to mess with Grayson. His friend was only supposed to grab Amy. His friend had panicked when Lizzie started screaming so he took them both. I tried, one more time to get him to open his mouth. He said, the only control he ever had in his life was keeping his mouth shut and that he didn't want them to cancel the execution. He was ready to be done. I asked him to stay alive, for me. He told me that I would be better off without him. There would be no more arguing with Grayson. He wasn't scared to die. He was just sorry that it was going to cause me more pain. He said he was still too selfish to put anyone's needs above his own. I had hoped that my Dad would have come. I just don't think his heart could take it. I know they spoke on the phone a few weeks ago. Neither one of them would tell me about it beyond that. The not knowing who was responsible for Lizzie still haunts me. I have nightmares all of the time. That's why I have the tattoo, I thought maybe a physical manifestation would help stop them. I don't know that I'll ever sleep again."
She grabbed both of their glasses and went over to the counter and refilled their drinks. Rafael stood up and followed her. He took the drinks out of her hands and set them on the counter and then pulled her into a tight hug.He felt her body relax in his arms. He didn't want to say he was sorry. Somehow he knew she would see it as pitty. There were no words that could be said that would make any difference. They stood like that for a while before she pulled away. He wiped her eyes again.
"Thank you for trusting me with your story. Who else knows?"
"Just Cragen. He would only let me come to SVU if I was upfront about why I wanted to work there. Though I held it together when I told him."
"Amaro doesn't?"
"No. He just saw a portion of the execution notice. He asked, but I wouldn't tell him. He asked me if I was going and I said yes. He wanted to come with me, but I told him no. I wouldn't have been able to handle him finding out"
"I'm surprised you let me come in with you, but I'm glad you did. No one should go through that alone. Your story is safe with me."
"I know. I trust you, Rafael."
"I'm glad."
"You don't have to stay."
"There's no place else I want to be right now. C'mon, we'll watch a movie." He tucked a loose girl behind her ear. Rafael wasn't leaving her alone. While she was willing to share all of that, she was also excellent at masking her emotions, likely a trait she learned so she could appease or survive her mother. She needed someone to show up for her. He was more than willing to do that for her.

If you're in the mood for a very dark, Rafael Barba-centric fic, might I suggest my WIP Good Intentions Pave the Way?
Mind the warnings/tags. They are there for good reason.
I do know how the story ends, though there's still a bit left to go. I do update, typically, at least once a week.
If you read, please let me know what you think :)
Here's the summary: A ghost comes back to haunt Rafael Barba. Estranged from Olivia and written off by Elliot and the SVU after his defense of Richard Wheatley, the chances of rescue look bleak. Is there a way out for him, or will he be trapped until his captor tires of keeping him in a personal hell?
