i've seen this kind of thing happening a lot, with my best examples coming from the edens zero fanbase. there usually seems to be a period of time where the official translated names and the fandom's preferences are still forming and the correct spellings are much more up in the air, before they finally settle down.

a couple examples of this would be;

the character "elsie crimson" instead being spelt as "elcy" or "elsy"

the character "weisz steiner" instead being spelt as "wise", and additionally the pronunciation of "weisz" being the german pronunciation

the character "labilia christi" instead being spelt as "lavilia" or "lavilla" in the very early days

i find it interesting how these things solidify over time, as the media becomes more accessible outside of japan. i distinctly remember approaching several names and ship names with grains of salt until they were more set in stone, and i'm sure you can still find a handful of relics that use these names too, if you look hard enough.

Why did you spell the name of Laxus's green-haired friend as "Freed" when it was printed as "Fried" in the page image you showed? It is a translation thing, or just personal preference?

Personal preference! I think it's officially confirmed to be "Fried", but I've always preferred "Freed" because I think it looks better and Fried tends to be misread as fried (as in fried rice) in my head, so it trips me up.

I do the same time with Porlyusica and Grandine! (Polushka and Grandeeney, according to some official sources I think). And Hibiki Laytis (Lates??? Mashima why'd you spell it like that) and Bickslow! (Bixlow)

I just like the alternative ('fanmade' or unofficial) spelling a little better. I think that as long as we all know who we're talking about, whichever spelling is fine! Sometimes, canon is only canon as far as the fans want it to be ♡
