Tuesday 30th April

We spent the morning of our second day in St Omer at the Cathedral dedicated to Our Lady. We were conscious of another French Cathedral, Notre Dame de Paris, and the tragedy that has so recently visited this national monument. Firstly we spent some time meditating on the ‘Verity’ speeches delivered by Mary Ward to her fledgling community here:

“… Fervour is not placed in feelings, but in a will to do well, which women may have as well as men. There is no such difference between men and women that women may not do great things, as we have seen by the example of many saints who have done great things. And I hope in God it will be seen that women in time to come will do much … “

“… This is verity, to do what we have to do well. Many think it nothing to do ordinary things. But for us it is. To do ordinary things well, to keep our constitutions, and all other things that be ordinary in every office or employment, whatsoever it be, to do it well, this is for us, and this by God’s grace will maintain fervour … “

“… Love verity, seek knowledge, not for knowledge, but for the end it bringeth you unto, which is God, then you will be happy and able to profit yourselves and others …”

The Cathedral in St Omer is jam-packed with memorials, tombs, statues, paintings, elaborate candelabra, a huge baroque pulpit, a Rubins’ painting of the Deposition … all a bit overwhelming. By contrast two parishioners kept faithful vigil in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament for most of the time we were acting ‘touristy’, attesting to the simple fervent faith of God’s people here in St Omer over the centuries. Their shaky rendition of Tantum Ergo at the end of the prayer was very beautiful.

I was touched by a tribute to members of the armed forces from all Commonwealth countries in on corner of the Cathedral: To the Glory of God and to the memory of one million dead of the British Empire who fell in the Great War (1914-1918) and of whom the greater part rest in France.

Another element of the Cathedral’s interior that struck me was a bas relief of Our Lady breastfeeding Jesus in the company of a cat, cow and donkey. This is not an image that we see very often and certainly stressed the humanity, fragility, tenderness, beauty and bond of mother and child.

We concluded our time at Notre Dame with a candle-lighting ritual under the gaze of the statue of Our Lady of Miracles. During this time we prayed for all the needs of our heart and homes, neighbourhoods and nations, communities, country and cosmos. There’s nothing like candles aglow in a space that has been prayed in for centuries. The shared silence was a potent and powerful form of praise.

After Notre Dame we scattered across the town to gather supplies for a picnic lunch: strawberries and camembert, baguettes filled with good things, pain au chocolate and many other delicacies. A mini-bus then dropped us to the adjoining neighbourhood of Clairmarais. We drove along the canal banks of the marshlands that Mary Ward would have walked along as she begged for food for the Poor Clare community across the ten months that she was an extern sister. As we sat in the comfort of the bus it was hard to imagine the physical toll of such a daily routine. Before we had lunch we visited the cemetery of Clairmarais where we again were moved by a grave for an unknown soldier of the Second World War.

We enjoyed lunch by the canal and in the local pub which boasted a wood fire slow cooking some sort of pork stew. Needless to say the warmth and smell comforted us on what had turned into quite a bitter day. With Pierre and Thomas as our guides and boatmen we donned life vests and hopped into simple long barges that would have bean used to transport vegetables up and down hundreds of kilometres of man-made canals on the marshlands. The ecosystem of the canals was fascinating: hundreds of birds, country houses, swaying reeds, low bridges (and a barking dog on one to greet us!). Our guides covered the history, agricultural, anthropological and natural history of the region. They both had great passion for this unique environment and outlined some of the problems facing the canals re long-term viability, eg the decreasing number of farmers in the region , the impact of introduced species etc.

Our day concluded with a beautiful meal in an underground stone cellar in t a great restaurant called Le Cygne. Here we enjoyed local produce crafted into dishes of beauty and elelgance (and they were Very yummy). We have returned to Hotel St Louis to pack our bags ready for the onward h=journey to Liege. We are grateful for Birgit and Laurent, our hosts here at the hotel, for their gracious support and hospitality.

La vision éthique de l'IA proposée dans le rapport Touraine est une éthique pratique reposant sur les principes suivants: Autonomie, Consentement éclairé, Protection de la vie privée, Établissement de la responsabilité en cas d'erreur médicale. Si les propositions effectuées dans ce rapport sont intéressantes, elles ne s'ancrent pas dans les principes intangibles et inaliénables des droits de l'Homme tels que définit, par exemple, dans la Charte des droits fondamentaux de l'Union européenne: dignité, libertés, égalité, solidarité, droits des citoyens à la justice. N'y aurait-il donc aucun concept fondateur et inaliénable comme préalable aux lois sur la Bioéthique française?

Or, le Groupe européen d'éthique des sciences et des nouvelles technologies, sorte de comité d'éthique européen nommé par le Président de la Commission Européenne, conteste cette notion même d'autonomie des algorithmes: «Le terme «autonomie» découle de la philosophie et désigne la capacité des personnes humaines à légiférer pour elles-mêmes, à formuler, à réfléchir et à choisir des normes, des règles et des lois à suivre. […] Il est donc impropre d'appliquer le terme «autonomie» à de simples artefacts, même s'il s'agit de systèmes adaptatifs complexes très avancés, voire «intelligents». […] La dignité humaine en tant que fondement des droits de l'Homme implique qu'une intervention et une participation humaines significatives doivent être possibles dans toutes les interactions entre la technologie et l'homme et son environnement.»

Enfin, de façon plus large, l'éthique de l'IA devrait être le point de départ d'une réflexion plus globale sur l'usage des technologies NBIC (Nanotechnologie, Biotechnologie, technologie de l'Information et technologie cognitive). Ces technologies présentent de très nombreuses convergences car elles s'empruntent toutes des applications les unes aux autres, rendant l'éthique centrale sur l'ensemble des technologies étudiées.

Maurice Lévy, the former CEO of Publicis, one of the two companies behind VivaTech with Les Échos, first introduced the event, as well as Eric Hazan from McKinsey. McKinsey worked on the data that was used to start those discussions. So let’s see what they talked about.

“As McKinsey showed, there's no question that technology overall is a net creator of job and GDP. It's a positive force,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said. “At the same time, AI and automation, while driving the economy and productivity, […] will lead to large groups being disadvantaged.”

He then listed a few important points to make sure that nobody is going to be left behind, such as coaching and mentorship programs.

“This is not just the government's job but it is also the job of private companies,” Khosrowshahi added.

He wanted to remain hopeful and it felt a bit like a lobbying effort. “It's easy to see the lost of jobs because of automation. But it's much more difficult to dream about the possibilities of the future,” he said. In other words, don’t worry about the on-demand economy, don’t worry about self-driving cars.

IBM CEO Ginni Rometty was in charge of the discussions around education. “We also had a lot of engineers and pragmatic people there. And we ended up with five recommendations,” she said.

“I truly believe in freedom, in that fundamental ability that you need to be able to take good decisions and bad decisions,” he said. The second idea is the consequence of that first one.

“With great power comes great responsibility. I think a modern philosopher called Peter Parker said that for the first time. And I really think it’s true.”

“While you don’t have to regulate on everything, when something isn’t regulated, it’s possible that it gets out of your control. And when it comes to the digital revolution and the data revolution, that freedom needs some boundaries. You know that Europe worked on some regulation — GDPR. What looked like regulation against innovation now appears as desirable and useful,” he said.

He then indirectly called out Facebook for its half-baked GDPR changes. “Some of you, and I believe it’s the case of Microsoft, decided to enforce GDPR everywhere. And I encourage everyone to do the same.”

The fact that 50 CEOs came to Paris is interesting by itself. It’s a sign that tech companies want to have an open discussion with governments. They want to make sure that regulation is favorable. On the other end, governments want to make sure that tech innovations aren’t going to divide society.

But it’s just starting.

Ahead of VivaTech, 50 tech CEOs came to Paris to have lunch with French President Emmanuel Macron. Then, they all worked together on “tech for good”. The event was all about leveraging tech around three topics — education, labor and diversity.

At the end of the day, French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe invited everyone for a speech in Matignon. It wasn’t a groundbreaking speech as Macron is also speaking at VivaTech tomorrow morning. “We’re trying to pivot France,” Philippe said.

Maurice Lévy, the former CEO of Publicis, one of the two companies behind VivaTech with Les Échos, first introduced the event, as well as Eric Hazan from McKinsey. McKinsey worked on the data that was used to start those discussions. So let’s see what they talked about.

“As McKinsey showed, there’s no question that technology overall is a net creator of job and GDP. It’s a positive force,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said. “At the same time, AI and automation, while driving the economy and productivity, […] will lead to large groups being disadvantaged.”

He then listed a few important points to make sure that nobody is going to be left behind, such as coaching and mentorship programs.

“This is not just the government’s job but it is also the job of private companies,” Khosrowshahi added.

He wanted to remain hopeful and it felt a bit like a lobbying effort. “It’s easy to see the lost of jobs because of automation. But it’s much more difficult to dream about the possibilities of the future,” he said. In other words, don’t worry about the on-demand economy, don’t worry about self-driving cars.

IBM CEO Ginni Rometty was in charge of the discussions around education. “We also had a lot of engineers and pragmatic people there. And we ended up with five recommendations,” she said.

It sounds like these recommendations would be really favorable for IBM and other tech companies. So here are these recommendations:

Focus and segment this problem. Focus on the quarter of the population the most at risk.

Align the skills that businesses need with the education system (hard skills and soft skills).

There should be an open partnership with governments to reposition vocational education, learn by doing, foster internships, apprenticeships, simulations and redirect tax to incentivize.

Work with teachers to pilot, get hard evidence and then scale.

Retraining employees is the responsibility of all employers.

Finally, SAP CEO Bill McDermott talked about diversity. “As we looked at the facts, there are 33 percent more revenue, more profit for companies that got the memo on companies more inclusive and more diverse,” he said.

Culture, gender and geography were the main themes. But they also talked about differently able people. SAP will make an announcement around autism in France.

“Dara, Ginni and Bill, thank you for your introduction, that was brilliant, in English and concise,” French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe said.

He then listed three ideas that sum up his thinking about the tech industry.

“I truly believe in freedom, in that fundamental ability that you need to be able to take good decisions and bad decisions,” he said. The second idea is the consequence of that first one.

“With great power comes great responsibility. I think a modern philosopher called Peter Parker said that for the first time. And I really think it’s true.”

“While you don’t have to regulate on everything, when something isn’t regulated, it’s possible that it gets out of your control. And when it comes to the digital revolution and the data revolution, that freedom needs some boundaries. You know that Europe worked on some regulation — GDPR. What looked like regulation against innovation now appears as desirable and useful,” he said.

He then indirectly called out Facebook for its half-baked GDPR changes. “Some of you, and I believe it’s the case of Microsoft, decided to enforce GDPR everywhere. And I encourage everyone to do the same.”

The fact that 50 CEOs came to Paris is interesting by itself. It’s a sign that tech companies want to have an open discussion with governments. They want to make sure that regulation is favorable. On the other end, governments want to make sure that tech innovations aren’t going to divide society.

But it’s just starting.

What to expect from the autumn/winter 2018 shows at Paris Fashion Week

Last September, the fashion world was all aflutter in anticipation of a slew of debut collections by designers for the grandes maisons of Paris. Exciting for some, and nerve-wracking for others, spring/summer 2018 signalled a changing of the guard—one that has now settled in (presumably) to their new positions in the upper echelons of the industry, alongside a crop of talents who have decamped from New York to try their luck in the City of Light. Though some think of fashion like a house of cards, the reality is a little more stable—and at this end of fashion month, labels are keenly investing for long-term gain—pouring new foundations, renovating, upscaling and toying with a ‘sea change’ in the fashion real estate game.

New foundations

French wunderkind Simon Porte Jacquemus kicks off the show season in Paris with his Monday night slot, the only show on a day when buyers, editors and the rest of the fashion pack are still transiting from Milan. On Wednesday, he unveiled via Instagram that his autumn/winter 2018 show ‘Le Souk’ (no prizes to whoever guesses that inspiration) will take place at the Petit Palais which, like last season’s Musée Picasso affair, is a serious step-up from his early show locations, which included a local swimming pool and games arcade. His hash-tagging of #newjob has fashion folk gossiping as to what he’ll unveil the day of the show, but with rumours of the Céline position clearly misplaced, the jury’s out on this one. Could he have been chosen to revive a slumbering fashion house, perhaps?

With Hedi Slimane’s appointment at Céline, Phoebe Philo’s coveted Sunday afternoon spot on the PFW calendar was up for grabs, as the house reshuffles for Slimane’s first show in October. Instead, Belgian entrepreneur Anne Chapelle (business partner to both Ann Demeulemeester and Haider Ackermann) seized the time slot for Poiret—the century-old French maison she has revived (thanks to financial backing from Samsung heiress Chung Yoo-Kyung) with Chinese couturier, Yiqing Yin at the creative helm.

Another newcomer on the schedule is the 2017 LVMH Prize winner Marine Serre. Since quitting her day job at Balenciaga to go solo, her printed body stockings and flouncy, voluminous gowns have been snapped up by the likes of Dover Street Market and Opening Ceremony. Serre will open the first full day of shows on Tuesday morning before big-ticket blockbusters: Dior by Maria Grazia Chiuri in the gardens of the Musée Rodin and—just hours later—Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent.

Restoration and renovations

Autumn/winter 2018 is the season of the sophomore, as a trio of designers will each present their second collection at a Parisian house. First up is Natacha Ramsay-Levi at Chloé, who will be moving her second show to an as-of-yet undisclosed location after last season’s exclusive outing (60 per cent less seats!) inside the new, contemporary art-filled Maison Chloé. Later that day, Dior alumni Serge Ruffieux’s pretty, bohemian new vision for Carven will play out at a middle school in the 15th arrondissement, whilst Clare Waight Keller’s Givenchy show returns to the Palais de Justice on Sunday morning. After mixed reports of her first women’s and men’s ready-to-wear collections last September, Waight Keller made a splash at her first-ever haute couture show in January, leaving the ball in her court for a strong follow-up for the house that Hubert built.

The transatlantic ‘seachange’

Not only have designers been switching houses, but labels have been exploring the geographic limitations of when and where they show their collections. Despite their studios remaining in New York City, a handful of designers have decamped to join the Paris schedule, just as others (like Bottega Veneta and Esteban Cortazar) have been trying their luck with one-time-only fashion shows in the Big Apple. Following buzzy debuts in Paris last October, Thom Browne and Joseph Altuzarra will show once again on the official calendar this week. Also of note, Demna Gvasalia will show both menswear and womenswear at his Sunday show for the very first time.

Off-schedule mini breaks

Runway shows aside, Paris Fashion Week will play host to hundreds of presentations, cocktails, dinners and after-parties that cater to a broad cross-section of the fashion community. Highlights will include the semi-finals of the fifth 2018 LVMH Prize, a competition presided over by a prestigious jury including Nicolas Ghesquière, Marc Jacobs, Clare Waight Keller, Haider Ackermann, Karl Lagerfeld, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Jonathan Anderson. The 21 finalists (which this year include Eckhaus Latta, GmbH, Matthew Adams Dolan and Charles Jeffrey) will be whittled down to eight, with the winner announced in June. Finally, and for those seeking the veritable holy grail of fashion inspiration, the exhibition “Margiela Galliera��� opens at the Palais Galliera museum on March 3, its last show before closing mid-July for renovations and the establishment of a permanent collection. The Margiela exhibition—curated by Alexandre Samson and instigated by outgoing director Olivier Saillard—includes more than 130 silhouettes by the seminal Belgian designer, and word has it his personal implication in the project has been considerable.

Et tout le monde n’a pas la chance d’avoir une terrasse exposée au soleil, mais rien n’empêche d’en faire un bel espace verdoyant pour se ressourcer.

Pour attendre sagement, Côté Maison a préparé une sélection de terrasses fleuries et ensoleillées réalisées par les architectes, décorateurs et paysagistes de Côté Maison Projets.
