it's weird to draw characters you've only really sketched or just seen in your head

not really satisfied with the face, considering adding freckles/antlers/more deer-like features cuz rn it's not really obvious

some stuff about her:

her name is Laure, she's a florist and has her own flower shop

she's very sociable and an extrovert

she has deer ears and legs, as well as hooves (the shoes are here just because they're part of the outfit)

she plays the flute as a hobby

she lives a normal, boring life and doesn't really want that to change

Hands clasped behind his back, he moved through the gallery - examining each item he'd seen hundreds of times before. Here is where he makes mental notes for the next exhibit, where he fantasizes about opening up the lower floor for those who enjoy the darker side of life. Like him.

There are not very many he's run into during his time at Port Leiry, but there always exists an underground. He just needs to root it out.

Humming, he looks over to the new visitor and lifts his head in a slight nod. The mark on the palm of his hand itches, ever so annoyingly. The magic of detection is not a magic they've perfected, but it is one he dreams of - feeling the tattoos alight with fire and licking up his fingers and arm when he feels something otherworldly near.

It does not, though. And he instead turns his gaze back to the painting they stand in front of. "Are you looking to buy this time, Mrs. Stephens?"

"Watch your step, honey," she warned, pointing out a a few cracks in pavement that were unrelated to the attack. Just an incantation gone pear-shaped once upon a time.

She's used to off-putting and eerie, but the grounds were extricably so after the attack. Souls slept and greeted the new arrivals as old friends would; with open arms and the safe consolation that they couldn't die twice.

She'd retold first-hand accounts, recounted to her in fractures and fragments by the deceased themselves in early morning hours, to Laure as they walked through the grounds. Marnie's persistence for fresh florals on all headstones was doing it a world of favours, distracting even her eyes from the damages of reckless hunters. The most recently deceased as a result of the attack practically overflowing with love.

"I can't see a pattern between damaged crypts and headstones. I think they were just... sloppy." Clear judgement to her tone, as if the hunters weren't worth the time she spent talking about them. "Looking for anyone they could get their hands on." But Marnie was pointing out damages left and right until they came to the decadent front gates of the mausoleum entrance. Ornate iron off its hinges.

"Unnecessary," she commented, of the whole ordeal really but particularly of the gates. It wouldn't be that hard to climb the stone walls, anyway..She'd had half a mind to send a little search party of the undead out for reconnaissance, but her little idea was frowned on by almost every leader she'd had the gall the tell.

I'm honestly loving the energy. Also reminds me of a photo of Sjokz and Laure with Guldborg between them, which felt similar, but i sadly can't find it.

Sjokz and Laure rock every space they are in and I think that's beautiful

There were rumors that the Elven Prince fell in love with a human and sired a child. No one could find the pair, however, and the royals and the nobles went into chaos trying to find them and bring them back to the kingdom.

Meanwhile, in Apple Town (what will later become Apple Federation), a man named George went to meet his new neighbors. They were a mother and son. They were weary of him and kept their distance for a while. But he was harmless enough that they finally invited him for tea.

The boy was strangely calm as he asked about Pigeon Kingdom. George told them both that the Elven royals and the human nobles were fighting more and more. No one was safe.

But the mother and son chose to trust him. They befriended him, and he even taught the boy how to shoot a gun. Everything was finally settling down...

Until news of the new coronation arrived. The Elven Prince was now becoming King, and the search for the pair was desperate. Some Pigeon folk spot and attack them. George revealed that he was sent to keep an eye on them and protect them.

Except that order was given by the Elven Prince. And he actually never wanted his old lover or offspring anywhere near him. George sacrificed himself so that Laure and Mercury could escape.

However, they both showed up at the King’s coronation. They were not going to hide anymore.The King still saw them as a risk, and he tried to dismiss them. Instead, Laure drowned herself in the Holy Light River. Mercury was brought into the palace, but not as an heir, and not as a member of the family.

A hundred years passed. Mercury still returns to Pigeon Kingdom to visit his mother’s grave and wonder what would have happened if things were different.

Connections

-Mercury’s father, the Elven Prince, was originally dismissed from the Royal Court when they found out he had a half-human son. The plan at the time was to get rid of him so that his sister, Hestia, would become queen. However, they wanted to control Hestia, and she was independent, so they staged the “accident” that crippled her, blamed it on her and heresy, and then brought the Elven Prince back to take the crown.

-The King made it very clear that he never accepted Mercury as his own child. In the Reflections for Elves’ Elegy and Startide Dreams, Mercury is often alone or bullied. He rarely got to spend time with his sister, Ophelia, but he did meet the Water Elf King, whom he bonded with over their shared hatred of the Light Elves.

-In the Reflection for Forever Vow, Mercury carried a gun with him as a child when he ran away from Pigeon Kingdom. It’s very likely the gun is the same one he received from George.

-In Vol. 1, Chapter 10, the story explains that the Holy Light River got its name from the glow it emits. However, in Mercury’s memories for Elves’ Elegy, he finds it ironic that the “holy” river has seen so many drown in it, a lot of them caused by the royal court.

Fun Facts

-Laure’s name most likely comes from the plant “laurel,” which symbolizes success, wealth, and fame.

-The only person Mercury ever loved was his mother, Laure, although he shows much respect and reverence for his Aunt Hestia. After he killed his father, he tried to make her queen again.

-Mercury’s business acumen and rigorous work ethic he has an adult started out with him managing his mother’s craft business while they were in exile.
