I am once again thinking about Kill for Love by Laura Picklesimer. It's a lot like American Psycho but if Patrick Bateman was a sorority girl (and the book was actually one I enjoyed). I highly recommend it to anyone interested in that vibe.
if you truly wanted to remake american psycho for the modern day you would cast a young 20 something hot woman and make it about social media “amazon must buy” influencers and how it’s a shallow, empty, and extremely copy-paste job where you turn yourself into a salesperson for the smallest amount of commission and lose all originality of yourself. bc those girls that go to bed with literal tape over their mouths and after doing a 10 step skincare routine are closer to being patrick bateman than literally any man alive

I still have a few books to read this year but here is my top books of the year!
Honorable Mentions (not in any order):
nonfiction
Mormonism and White Supremacy - Joanna Brooks
Running on Empty - Jonice Webb
romance
Raised to Kill - Evangeline Anderson
mystery/thriller
The Confidence Games - Tess Amy
Death at Morning House - Maureen Johnson
First Lie Wins - Ashley Elston
How I'll Kill You - Ren DeStefano
Undead Girl Gang - Lily Anderson
From Below - Darcy Coates
top ten (in reverse order of how much I loved them):
10. Killers of a Certain Age - Deanna Raybourn
this is tonally v dif from The Old Woman With the Knife but in both cases, LOVE older women protagonists, LOVE when they do crimes.
9. Revival Season - Monica West
I thought about this book so much after reading it. It has sort of a fable tone to it, the story just grows in meaning as you think about it.
8. Moon of the Crusted Snow - Waubgeshig Rice
Apocalyptic but also incredibly hopeful, beautiful book about the importance of community and tradition/culture to survival.
7. Bad Graces - Kyrie McCauley
Feral girl core plus The Tempest allusions??? Yes please.
6. Cherish Farrah - Bethany C. Morrow
This book is more intense and disturbing than I usually go, but so good. I thought about it and journaled about it a lot after. Fascinating concept, amazing execution.
5. Song of the Six Realms - Judy I. Lin
Loved this book!!! It was so beautiful and I loved inhabiting the world. Also, this book launched my interest in guqin music which has brought so much joy to my life.
4. The Lost Man - Jane Harper
I enjoyed The Dry series as well but this stand alone was by far my favorite Jane Harper.
3. Kill for Love - Laura Picklesimer
No hate to Bunny but this was what I Personally wanted more of when I read Bunny. Violent and delightful.
and my top two which I can't separate because I loved them both and they're very different books.
Deluge - Leila Chatti/The Centre - Ayesha Manazir Siddiqi
Deluge is a book of poetry that is really hard to explain or encapsulate in any way, but I bought it immediately after finishing it and I will definitely reread it, probably multiple times.
The Centre was definitely my favorite fiction book I read this year. It's hard to explain why without spoilers, and I think the way the book unfolds is so good. It focuses on the idea of language and how it relates to the body/how language is embodied in a really fascinating way. Themes of creation and destruction as two sides of the same coin are present in a lot of my top reads, including here for sure.

Reading
Warning, this may contain some spoilers.
I have gotten myself back into reading! When I first started my full time job I was just so overwhelmed with keeping my schedule right, passing probation, and keeping up with classes I couldn't get myself into a book much. I started easy, I listened to an audio book of something I had enjoyed already, played it while I worked at my desk.
The first new book I really got into was "How Can I Help You" by Laura Sims. I kinda went back and forth on it, just trying to get myself to read a bit at least once a week. It was really good! I especially loved how the ending turned out.
After that one, I picked up "The Quiet Tenant" by Clemence Michallon. I really got into this one. I had a rhythm of reading a bit at home occasionally, but I always read for the last half hour of my break on late nights. I have always loved books where women have to escape murderers. It's the survival part of them that really pulls me. Did you ever used to daydream about what you would do during a zombie apocalypse? The story was really captivating to me, the woman doesn't try to run right away, she knows she has to wait for the right moment. I wasn't a big fan of how quickly it ended and got wrapped up. I'd have read another 100 pages if it went through what happens after more than it did.
I've really been wanting some horror, so I am now reading "What Moves the Dead" by T. Kingfisher. I haven't gotten far, but I do like that it is a smaller book- makes it less daunting for me to get back into reading. I am also reading "Kill for Love" by Laura Picklesimer which from reviews said it was quite gory so I am excited for it.

How to Cure Insomnia
Friday reading, "How to Cure Insomnia," by Laura Picklesimer.
by Laura Picklesimer
How to Cure Insomnia
First, grow up in a gated estate that overlooks the coastline from Newport to San Clemente. Lock your younger sister in the downstairs coat closet for hours at a time. Ignore her even after she pees her Burberry overalls.
Listen to the muffled screaming from the upstairs hallway when your father is occasionally home for the night. Find the best spots…
