2/2 As a black girl, people see so many of us as beasts and Hollywood & animation played a big part in those racist caricatures and even now, in the 21st century someone actually made a woc into an animal and a vast majority of the animation community will never call Noelle's racist ass out. And it's disheartening to see continued racist stereotypes being made by white people and still getting away with it. You know, as I was thinking about what else to add to this, I realized that maybe no one says anything about it because they just don't see the issue here.

My solution to this is simple, then.

Imagine Catra is of color. In the canon context. Half of her arc is about why she wants to destroy this white girl with a savior complex. Horde Prime uses her body to motivate this white girl to save her.

And that's the episode's name now, "Save the POC Girl", instead of "Save of the Cat". /s

Do you mind if I rant for a bit about certain real-world POC implications that makes POC!Catra especially heinous in my opinion?

I was born and raised in Bronx, NYC and I am (unfortunately or fortunately) still here. This is the home of such cultural, ethnic, and racial diversity, and yet there are still offenses based on all of this. The police brutality here against POC is a pattern rooted deeply in the idea that we are somehow violent, uneducated, and generally roguish.

So why in the ever-loving fuck would I want Catra—violent, (not uneducated, thank God, but some of the fandom would have you think otherwise), and generally roguish, Catra, representing the Latinx/black community?

It doesn't bother everyone, and I understand why. But, me? I hate it. I hate it here. Fuck, latina/black!Catra, even before we get to the fact that she is literally a fucking cat.

If she was written to be POC, she'd still be horrible rep.

• Regards Etherians as "intellectually inferior" on account of their technologically-challenged society.

• Mistreats his underlings.

• Enjoyed his time on the field. E.g., Salineas' destruction.

Erroneous Reasons

• "Entrapdak is abusive." Actually, Entrapdak is one of the healthiest relationships on the show. True story.

• "The age gap is an issue." They're both consenting adults. What's more, Entrapta's the oldest princess in Spop.

• "Hordak committed genocide!" No.

• "He's a colonizer!"

• "Hordak manipulated and took advantage Entrapta." That would be Catra.

• "Shipping him with an autistic woman makes him worse." No.

• "Shipping Hordak with Entrapta is lesphobic." Catradora." What u talkin' about?

Honestly, still talking about She-Ra here, I just hate the idea of segregating stories by race. I fully agree that we need more POC stories, we need more media targeted to POC specifically that will accurately and deliberately portray the POC life experience. I also recognize that there are white stories, stories made by and built for the white experience, and that these stories outnumber the POC ones a 100 to 1 and we really don't need any more of them.

That being said, not every single story ever should be forced into one of those two categories. Not every story is about race, not every story is a white or black story.

You can argue about She-Ra being a White Savior narrative, about Adora being a descendant of a colonizing empire that saves the native Etherians from a different empire. You can argue that the First Ones represent Europeans or that the Horde represents fascism and white supremacy. You can argue that Catra's haircut symbolizes colonialism. You can argue that Mara's white hair symbolizes European superiority. Then you can turn around and argue that the show actually supports all those things. You can put on the race glasses, view everything through the race lenses, and then proudly proclaim that you've found where it fits.

She-Ra was made by mostly white people, so it's a white story.

Except it really isn't. Race doesn't even really exist on Etheria. Bow is black and Glimmer is Asian and Catra is Latina, except no they aren't because Africa and Asia and Latin America don't exist in this Universe. Oh, so they're just coded then? Except that it's not like we ever see any Black, Asian, or Latinx culture in their stories or character arcs. For all intents and purposes, their race is just part of their character design. There isn't any racism in Etheria because an Etherian probably doesn't even know what race is.

People point to this and say it's problematic, that this means they're white characters with black paint. Again, She-Ra is a white story.

But what does that say? That any character without explicit race coding, even in a fantasy setting, is automatically coded white? That Bow is just a white character painted black because the lead production designer was white?

I understand the Doylian perspective. Even if Bow exists in a world without race, he's still what the audience perceives as Black, so even if his race doesn't affect the story at all what does end up happening to him and what he does end up doing will be seen through his race. If he died, it'd still be problematic since him and Entrapta are the only dark skinned characters in the main six. Context matters. The show definitely flubs the context at times, like how we see two She-Ras but it's the POC one that sacrifices herself so that the white one can live.

She-Ra was made by queer people, that's why it has good queer rep (depending on who you ask). She-Ra was made by autistic people, that's why it has good autistic rep (depending on who you ask). She-Ra was made by white people, that's why it has bad race rep (depending on who you ask).

We should be able to look at the show and critique how it was made and any mistakes that wormed their way through, but dismissing it so easily as because the crew was white, because Noelle is white, because it's a white story, because it wasn't made for poc, etc. It's just a terrible narrative that I really hate.

so catra was confirmed a woman of color after being more ambiguous and noelle said that the crew intended for her to be latina but couldn’t find a way to explicitly mention that (so she doesn’t want to take credit) and people are saying because she’s an angry villain throughout most of the show it’s bad rep for woc? and i just wanted to know if you thought that could be bad rep too despite her still being redeemed in the end

I mean it’s hard to answer this, I mean I a half chinese, but I’m very white passing because I favor my dad instead of my mom, despite my mother’s side of the family being the one I know the most about, I’m also not Latin-American, so I’m not going to speak over anyone who is, I can only give my opinion.

Personally, I think it’s kind of dumb, I mean yes Catra is an angry person, but it’s not like she’s angry as a stereotype, anger isn’t a bad or negative trait if there’s a reason for it, or that it’s something to overcome for a character.  Catra is a child soldier who was abused her whole life, never treated well, always blamed when things went wrong, and feels like the woman she loves abandoned her, that’s why she’s angry not because she’s a feisty latina.  From the beginning it was pretty obvious that Catra was a character who would be a villain that would eventually shift to the heroes side, you don’t get a character like her without having her be angry.  Characters should be allowed to have flaws to overcome or even just to exist  because people are flawed and having them makes character more real.  Yes she’s the villain for a large portion of the story, but that’s what makes her story tragic and then later triumphant when she is a key part of the story that saves the universe with love, pure sapphic love.

I would also say that if Catra was the only character to have Angry be a huge part of her personality that would be something concerning, but she’s not.  The story of She-Ra is a story of children forced to fight in a war that isn’t their own making and losing people they love because of it.  Glimmer and Frosta are both characters who are asian coded far more than Catra is Latinx, and they are also always angry, yet they’re not seen as bad rep for woc.  I know that Netossa isn’t seen as bad rep for woc or wlw despite being Black and sassy.  

I know that while she’s a diversive character, Catra’s also the second lead in the show and one of the most popular characters, she’s the catalyst for the happy ending at the end of the show and earns her own.  Again, I will never speak over someone who is latinx who feels angry or upset over Catra being coded as a hispanic woman, but I do know that most of the time, upsets in the fandom tend to be headed by white people who speak above or for poc, o,r lgbtq+, or any other minorities, without being asked so I would take it with a grain of salt.  Anon if you take any advice from my opinion, it’s okay to have opinions, but don’t ever speak over the people who are at the center of discourse

Step five, an entire army to deal with the 'rebellion', aka, anyone that doesnt worship him, so he checks that, too!

Step six, the fact all the hoard ppl legit believe that princesses are evil and they are hurting the world and they need to be stopped and 'liberated', which is propaganda!!

Step seven, this is currently being done! Villages are being wiped out and forced to relocate! Perfuma almost lost her home to the hoard poisoning her home!

Step eight, already happening! Hes killed countless people!

Step nine, again! Hes wiping out ENTIRE VILLAGES, this counts as step nine!

* in need of a more “sophisticated” culture 

* sexy/heavily sexualized
