Community & Identity

Being a Latino theater artist in Pittsburgh has been interesting to say the least. 

On one hand, there are so many opportunities here. It may be a small town, but the arts community is huge. I am constantly blown away by the talent in this city. I have seen incredibly beautiful shows and have been a part of a some. There are so many theatre companies in town that are working to produce relevant and thought-provoking shows. I don’t intend for this to be a post bitching about Pittsburgh theater because I truly love this town and incredible art that comes from it.

Where I struggle in this town is that, although I am a member of the artistic community, I don’t quite feel a part of it. Yes, I have met and worked with incredible people. Yes, I have a group of artists with whom I work semi-regularly and I love every second of it. I wouldn’t trade any of it. I just feel like there’s a piece missing. 

We all have different facets to our identity. I consider myself a theater artist. This consists of being an actor, a director, a singer, and, in general, a collaborator. I am also a Latino who is very proud of his heritage. I wasn’t always proud of it (that’s a different post), but I am now. Although they are 2 distinct parts (out of many) of who I am, they are also inextricably linked. I can’t really view my art through a different lens. Theatre artists draw from their experience all the time. When you put yourself in a character’s shoes and live in his/her given circumstances, your experiences are a huge part of your toolbox as an actor. This is what helps inform your reactions and emotions. Because I have not experienced the world as anything other than a Latino male, this is the way I see and interpret the world.

As I navigate the arts community in Pittsburgh, I struggle to find a place. That struggle comes from my lacking this feeling of community. And the reason I don’t quite feel this sense of community is because there are so few Latino theater artists in this town. Even though I have friends and collaborators, I don’t  have many of people with whom I have a shared cultural experience. I have begun to realize how important that shared cultural experience is. 

Technically I am a white Latino. I am light-skinned and, as I get older and am more bereft of sun due to living in perpetually cloudy Pittsburgh, I just keep getting lighter. I don’t identify as white, though. I have had enough experiences being treated as an “other” by the white community to know that, even though I share their skin tone, I’m not really a part of it. From being denied seating at restaurant and being followed around department stores due to being overheard speaking Spanish with my then 60 year-old mom, to having teachers and co-workers make green card and deportation jokes in front of me because they forgot I wasn’t one of them, I have never really been a member of the club (although I fully recognize that my skin tone gives me many privileges that many don’t have). I have also been told by Latinos that I am not really one of them--- that my light skin means that I don’t understand what it’s really like to be a Latino in this country--- that I’m not Latino enough. (Interestingly, I’ve gotten that from white casting agents, too.)

I want to continue to explore this feeling of belonging/not belonging on this page. I realize that, on the off chance that someone actually reads this, I may get my share of “boo-freakin’-hoo here’s some violin music for ya” reactions. But maybe I can also find people with shared experiences. People who understand what it’s like to be cause between worlds and have to map to help you navigate it. I may be, in essence, using this to find the community I lack.
