Learn to love myself everyday by even trying my best by doing my hair. I couldn't ever believe that I'd ever grow my hair back out. About 5yrs ago I did the #bigchop. Completely bald. My depression had sunken me so low I hated how I looked. Gained over 70lbs at one point. Just couldnt even bother taking care of myself. I've slowly grown to #lovemyself and am finding #innerbeauty within myself. So even if my hair doesn't come out the way I want I can be proud that I bothered to take care of myself this day. As a leader in the fields of racial equity, coalition building, systems change, and access to justice, she has worked side-by-side to effect positive change with DC leaders and service providers such as Bread for the City, La Clínica del Pueblo, Casa Ruby, the Ethiopian Community Center, the Consumer Health Foundation, Mary’s Center, the Latin American Youth Center, GLAA, and many others.⁣ ⁣ She is a civil rights lawyer, an advocate and a government executive who has devoted her 30+ year career to public service in the District. ⁣ ⁣ Appointed by Mayor Vincent Gray in 2014, and re-appointed twice by Mayor Muriel Bowser, as Director of the Office of Human Rights, Mónica established a successful track record as a leader who fights to make sure government systems work to meet the needs of our city’s residents. During her tenure, she rebuilt her agency to ensure the ongoing success of a mediation program that resulted in tens of millions of dollars paid to District residents.
