For the longest time, Vincent thought Lucrecia was his soulmate. The timer was always ticking, but day after day the time drew closer - in her presence, the timer always went down.

Then Hojo happened. The lab. When he woke again, Lucrecia was gone beyond his reach, and whatever Hojo had done to him, it reached all the way into his soul: his soul-clock, his life's meter, was glitched out like just another of Shinra's electronics. The timer read 99:99:99, an incomprehensible and ridiculous time.

It, along with everything else, drove him to slumber.

When he woke up again, it was to the blond-haired, blue-eyed face - Cloud Strife, as the man would later introduce himself.

It wasn't until much, much later that he checked his soul clock again and realized: at some point between waking and travelling, it'd quietly reached zero.

i feel like a lot of people are slowly coming around to rhysand kind of sucking actually, but also its still wild to me that sjmas finished the first book, obviously got bored with her first guy and decided he was the worst person to ever exist and we were all supposed to just agree with her. what a choice

I don't even think Rhysand sucks per se, it's mostly the weird hypocrisy and double standard around Tamlin's character that gets me.

There is some information floating around from an old newsletter that SJM wrote book 1 and 2 ages ago, kept them in a drawer, but then she rewrote most of book 2 before publication, and honestly? That's exactly what it reads like.

I have no idea if there is any truth in this at all, but it would indeed explain so much.
