As I read The Big Book of Japanese Giant Monster Movies: The Lost Films, one of the most fascinating parts has been learning just how differently the mid-to-late1960s might’ve been for the Godzilla franchise had Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (AKA Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster) not been made in 1966.

As many (most? some?) fans know, what became Ebirah originally began life as Operation Robinson Crusoe: King Kong vs. Ebirah.  For reasons that are disputed and vague, RKO and Toho decided not to go ahead with that project and instead Toho worked with Rankin-Bass to produce a live-action adaptation of their animated King Kong TV series (1967′s King Kong Escapes) while King Kong vs. Ebirah was reworked into a Godzilla film with basically nothing changed aside from Kong’s name getting scrubbed and Godzilla dropped in his place.

What’s been left out of this story after all of these years is a fairly obvious follow-up question that, oddly, I don’t think I’ve seen really anyone ask:  if Ebirah wasn’t SUPPOSED to be the next Godzilla movie after Monster Zero (1965)...then what was it going to be, before the plan changed?

At last, something of an answer!  \^o^/

After Monster Zero, it seems there were two competing concepts being considered (not uncommon, it seems, with this franchise throughout its history) for the 1966 Godzilla film.

One was a script titled Two Godzillas: Japan S.O.S.!, which involved scientists conducting experiments on a South Pacific Island stumbling across an adolescent Godzilla Junior, who joins up with Godzilla as the two make their way to Japan to wreak some havoc.  Godzilla and Junior would battle submarines and a tank battalion at Haneda Airport, before the scientists would use the weather machine to drive the monsters away again.

As I’m sure you’ve already guessed just from the title and brief description, this script was the one picked up again in 1967, scaled down, and ultimately released as Son of Godzilla.

The competing concept was a script by Ei Ogawa titled Giant Monster Assault which would’ve involved a space probe infected with a parasitic alien landing in the Pacific, mutating sea creatures into monsters which Godzilla would battle.  This script was ultimately passed over in favor of what became Son of Godzilla, though it was later salvaged, rewritten into a stand alone film, and finally released as Space Amoeba (AKA Yog, Monster from Space) in 1970.

So, in a timeline where Operation Robinson Crusoe was made and released in 1966, it’s possible the Godzilla film we’d have gotten at the same time might’ve been a movie that looked like the love child of Son of Godzilla and Space Amoeba.  What a cool and fascinating idea that might’ve been!  And could you imagine how much different the Godzilla franchise’s history could’ve been if there was no Minilla, but instead a Showa version of Godzilla Junior?

And what might Toho have done in 1967 instead?  The possibilities are endless!

I found this out while I was doing some research on Spirou et Fantasio and come to find out the album “Le dictateur et le champignon (The Dictator and the Mushroom)” was almost made into a actual pilot film made by Albert Champeaux Studios following a request by Dupuis editions in the late1960s but was cancelled these are the cellulos (cels) made for the cartoon. 

It’s a shame it got cancelled but I can understand why since the album was done by Franquin and his style of drawing is not easy to do in animation at lest at the time today it is possibly best example is another album work done by Franquin that got turned into a cartoon “Gaston Lagaffe” done by the animation company Normaal in 2009, they manage to keep Franquin style by doing vector puppet animation.

So it is possibly now but as we all know puppet animation has limits as evident in theses cartoons if you compare it to the books, they can do frame by frame but I guess by doing that they will lose Franquin drawing style.

But still I would have loved to see  “ Le dictateur et le champignon (The Dictator and the Mushroom)” made in to a cartoon special!

Have you noticed that in the past decade some writers have attempted to make the Ultra-Humanite, a Power Girl villain? At first I thought only Jimmy Palmiotti was doing it but he fought Karen in the New 52 Earth 2 comics as well.

I remember Palmiotti’s Power Girl stories, and it made sense to me because Power Girl was originally the Earth-2 version of Supergirl, and Ultra was originally an Earth-2 villain.  So after Crisis, when the Earth-2 Superman was no longer around, it worked for me for Power Girl to “inherit” her cousin’s villains as she was a legacy hero (a concept I really enjoyed in the post-Crisis DC universe, and sorely miss these days).

As to the New 52 stories, I don’t know very much.  When the New 52 came out I tried a few issues of every series DC put out, but I couldn’t get into it.  It was DC’s attempt at Marvel’s “Heroes Reborn” (which was such a bust it lasted only a year) and felt like DC was giving the finger to long-time fans because - and this was straight from Dan DiDio’s mouth - they were only interested in bringing in new readers.  I was so disappointed and disgusted I actually stopped reading and collecting DC (and pretty much all comics) at that point - and I’ve been reading/collecting since the late1960s.  

I only collected Hellboy for the next few years, and was only slowly coaxed back into collecting when DC launched “Rebirth” (unfortunately it took them a lot longer than Marvel to realize the mistake they made).

Now, with the launch of the omniverse I’m hoping we can get back to the true Earth-1, Earth-2, Earth-S, etc. concept.  Hopefully then we can see Ultra fighting the Earth-2 heroes (and Power Girl as well).  And if DC wants to create an new Earth-1 (or Prime, or whatever they’re calling the main Earth now) to fight Superman and his extended family I would be very happy. 

Sorry for the long-winded response.  I tend to think about this stuff too much.
