On January 23, 1985, The Thundercats pilot aired, which became the syndicated episodes Exodus/The Unholy Alliance and released later on video as the movie (also blended in with episodes Berbils and The Slaves of Castle Plun-darr). The pilot was filled with peril. It began with the cat-like Thunderians escaping to a distant galaxy as their home world Thundera explodes. As if that is not enough, the fleeing fleet is then attacked by their enemies "the mutants". In particular, they focused on the ship of the noble Thundercats in an effort to steal the mystical Thunderian artifact Sword of Omens. The leader of the Thundercat nobles Jaga is able to repel them, but at a cost. The ship's piloting system was damaged, so Jaga had to manually pilot the ship instead of being in suspended animation, the ship crash landed not on their originally destined planet, and Lion-O, the heir to the Thundercat throne, grew physically in his pod due to a malfunction. On the new world, Third Earth, the physically, though not in other ways, grown Lion-O takes his place as leader of the Thundercats that survived from the ship... Panthro, Cheetara, Tygra, WilyKat, Wily-Kit, and Snarf. Even then, they are still are not safe as the mutants Slithe, Monkian, and Jackalman have tracked them. They are joined by a powerful ally in the form of Mumm-Ra of the Black Pyramid on Third Earth, who also wanted the Sword of Omens. The mutants were reluctant to join forces, but once Mumm-Ra damaged their space craft, they changed their mind. ("Pilot", "Exodus", "Unholy Alliance", Thundercats, TV, Event)

Santa Clause: A History
The author reviews the 1985 stop-motion special "The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus" by Rankin/Bass, recalling it fondly from childhood and appreciating its mature storyline detailed in a fantastical setting in adulthood.
When I was a kid, this was one of my favorite Rankin/Bass specials. I would have to pled to watch it when I saw it was coming on because, as many of us know, 1990s TV in December was saturated with options when it came to Christmas movies. There was always something else that was on that was deemed better than the last Rankin/Bass Animagic (stop motion) special, 1985’s “The Life and Adventures of…

Ellen Greenberg
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The family of a teacher who was found brutally stabbed in her home in what was deemed a suicide by authorities have demanded that the city's mayor reopen her case amid claims the governor had a conflict of interest.Ellen Greenberg was 27 years old when her fiancé Sam Goldberg found her dead in the kitchen of her Philadelphia apartment on January 26, 2011; she had 20 stab wounds, including 10 to the back of the head and neck.
Her parents have been on a journey ever since to get what they say would be justice for their daughter, who they claim was being abused by Goldberg - whose family allegedly donated to then-attorney general Josh Shapiro, now the state's governor. Ellen's father Dr. Josh Greenberg told Fox News Digital his daughter had injuries on her body 'consisted with abuse.''That's what I think the whole issue of this story,' the grieving father added. 'Somebody didn't want Ellen's abuse to get out there … and that's why she's dead.'
Tumblr media
Ellen Greenberg was 27 years old when her iancé Sam Goldberg found her dead in the kitchen of her Philadelphia apartment on January 26, 2011Ellen's parents, Joshua and Sandee believe their daughter was killed and have spent years dedicated to finding out the truth behind her deathBack in 2022, independent journalist Gavin Fish claimed in a YouTube video that then AG Shapiro had a 'clear conflict of interest' in the case and that Goldberg's family were campaign donors. Then-AG Shapiro recused himself from the case three days after the video was published, as reported by Fox News.At the time, the AG's office denied the conflict of interest was real.'While the Office of Attorney General does not have an actual conflict in this matter, circumstances beyond our control have created the appearance of a conflict and our involvement is no longer serving one of the primary purposes of the District Attorney’s original conflict referral,' Shapiro's office told The Philadelphia Inquirer.
In July 2023, Dr Greenberg claimed Ellen's autopsy report said she suffered a huge laceration in the back of her head and that she was covered in bruises in different stages of healing. 'That's what I think the whole issue of this story,' he told Fox News Digital. 'Somebody didn't want Ellen's abuse to get out there … and that's why she's dead.' Ellen's death was initially ruled a homicide but the medical examiner's office then changed it to suicide after a meeting with police and prosecutors, per her family.
Tumblr media
A petition asking mayor Jim Kenney to to reopen and investigate Ellen’s case has collected more than 150,000 signatures.Officials have for years said they have found no evidence of foul play in Ellen's death.Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner also previously recused himself from reinvestigating the death after having previously worked with the Greenbergs.
At the time, police claimed that the door of Greenberg's apartment was locked from the inside and there were no signs of a struggle.Goldberg told investigators he came home in 2011, kicked the door, and found his fiancé dead with a knife clinging to her chest.
Tumblr media
In a chilling 911 call, he told police Greenberg had stabbed herself. 'Help!... My fiancé's on the floor with blood everywhere.'He later added, 'I can't see anything... there's nothing broken... Ellie!... I think she hit her head.''Oh my god! She stabbed herself... she fell on a knife... there is a knife sticking out of her heart.'
The Chester County District Attorney's Office began an outside investigation into Ellen's death last year, but now governor Shapira had been sitting on the case for years while he was attorney general.'He stole four years from us, holding the case in his office, and we have no evidence of him doing anything,' said Ellen's mother Sandee Greenberg.
Then-AG Shapiro's office, however, previously said it had undertaken 'an exhaustive review and conducted new forensic analysis' but their additional efforts did not bring 'more closure to the questions around [Ellen's] death.'Chester County officials have said their investigation into the case is ongoing. The Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General alleged that several death and suicide- related searches has been performed on Greenberg's laptop in the weeks leading up to her death. But a lawyer hired by the Goldbergs said the hard-drive was subsequently examined by the FBI lab in 2011 and no such searches were found.
Tumblr media
In the weeks prior to her death, Greenbergs parents, Josh and Sandee, said something had been troubling their daughter. However, they did not believe she was suicidal.A couple of weeks before her death Greenberg told her parents that she wanted to quit her job and 'come home.' They said she could come home if she needed to, but they wanted her to seek help for her anxiety. She told them it was the stress of organizing a wedding – she was due to marry that August and had sent out 'Save the Date' cards just four days before her death - and that work was particularly busy. Her father said, 'Something was amiss. Her personality was changed. She played it off that work was too much but when the teacher who took on Ellen's class saw her books and marking she said everything was perfect.'
Greenberg saw a therapist who prescribed her Ambien and Klonopin for anxiety. Police pointed to this as further support for a finding of suicide. But psychiatrist Dr Ellen Berman, who saw Greenberg three times before her death, was clear that her new patient was not suicidal.
Tumblr media
Samuel Goldberg is now 40 and a married father of two living in New York. He remained in contact with the family for a year or so following Greenberg's death.

My media this week (9-15 Jun 2024)
Tumblr media
actually me this week. week full of office meetings. did not like.
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😊 Murder on the French Riviera (Miss Underhay Mystery #16) (Helena Dixon, author; Karen Cass, narrator) - Kitty & Matt do a bit of off the books espionage on the French Riviera. I find this series relaxing - it's entertaining, predictable, charming & superficial.
🥰 the warmth of your doorways (cicer) - 00Q, 384K (WIP) - fake marriage that starts as a QPP, fairly quickly becomes romantic, eventual even sexual as they both heal trauma & become domesticated; great slow burn journey to get there, never got bogged down, just took its time. Loved being in JB's POV as he slowly becomes domesticated, realizes he doesn't hate it, grapples with that, realizes he's actually in love with his husband, starts working thru & healing trauma. WIP (possibly abandoned) but honestly where it currently ends makes for a reasonably satisfactory stopping point. I liked that the author was very clear upfront that QPP aren't inferior in any way but that this is the story they wanted to tell about these characters.
💖💖 +15K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖

And it was at that moment, the gang members knew. They fucked up.
After a scene transition, I hear King Claudus speak for the first time since I started my initial rewatch, and it suddenly hits me that he's voiced by Larry Kenney, the voice of 80s Lion-O. That didn't click for me the first time around because I started rewatching 2011 after only one episode of 80s, so I wasn't as familiar with 80s Lion-O's voice. But now, months later, I hear Claudus and immediately think "that's 80s Lion-O but older and gruffer". That's the kind of casting move I love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But anyway, back on topic. Our Lion-O here isn't just sneaking out, he's playing hooky. He's got a good heart, but an irresponsible streak that's gonna cause him problems later.
80s Lion-O was a child in an adult body, and whether the show remembered that or not fluctuated from episode to episode. 2011 split the difference by having Lion-O be actually of age but still young and inexperienced, which I think works really well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Complex Detected.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back to Lion-O. He's compassionate, he's reckless, and he's also curious. He's fascinated by things that others write off, and by the larger world of Third Earth outside Thundera. Thundera is implied to be hella isolated despite their powerful influence, but Lion-O isn't satisfied with that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Having technology be presented as a fairy tale while magic is, we'll see, 100% real and known is kind of wild, and this is a neat way to give the main character an interest in technology.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cheetara might be skeptical of the technology itself, and even the shopkeeper, but she's not disparaging to Lion-O for wanting to know more.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A journalist and advocate who rose from homelessness and addiction to serve as a spokesperson for Philadelphia's most vulnerable was shot and killed at his home early Monday, police said.Josh Kruger, 39, was shot seven times at about 1:30 a.m. and collapsed in the street after seeking help, police said. He was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later. Police believe the door to his Point Breeze home was unlocked or the shooter knew how to get in, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. No arrests have been made and no weapons have been recovered, they said.Authorities haven't spoken publicly about the circumstances surrounding the killing.“Josh cared deeply about our city and its residents, which was evident both in his public service and in his writing. His intelligence, creativity, passion, and wit shone bright in everything that he did — and his light was dimmed much too soon,” Mayor Jim Kenney said in a statement.Kruger handled social media for the mayor and communications for the Office of Homeless Services from about 2016 to 2021. He left city government to focus on writing projects for news outlets and progressive causes. He wrote at various times for Philadelphia Weekly, Philadelphia City Paper, The Philadelphia Inquirer and other publications, earning awards for his poignant and often humorous style. On his website, he described himself as a “militant bicyclist” and "a proponent of the singular they, the Oxford comma, and pre-Elon Twitter.“In a statement Monday, District Attorney Larry Krasner praised Kruger's contributions to the city.“As an openly queer writer who wrote about his own journey surviving substance use disorder and homelessness, ... Josh Kruger lifted up the most vulnerable and stigmatized people in our communities — particularly unhoused people living with addiction,” Krasner said. “Josh deserved to write the ending of his personal story.”

VHS Archive: Show Me the Bloopers (1997)
The latest entry into The Retro Network's #VHS archive on YouTube is the 1997 #baseball sports video titled Show Me the #Bloopers, narrated by Larry Kenney the voice of Lion-O from #Thundercats.
Bloopers have always been very entertaining whether you are talking about reels from TV shows or sports. As one of the hosts of Thrift Store Horde, I’m always on the lookout for rare sports themed VHS tapes. One that caught my eye in recent months, thanks to the wild box art, was Show Me the Bloopers, Major League Baseball Funnies from 1997. Another thing that caught my eye was the Fox Saturday…

https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2023/07/18/extreme-heat-record-limits-human-survival/
The heat index reached 152 degrees in the Middle East — nearly at the limit for human survival
Updated July 18, 2023 at 10:02 a.m. EDT|Published July 18, 2023 at 6:30 a.m. EDT
As the Northern Hemisphere approaches summer’s peak, heat is testing the limits of human survival in Earth’s hottest spots — and demonstrating the extremes that are increasingly possible and probable against the backdrop of accelerating global warming.
In recent days, China set an all-time high of nearly 126 degrees Fahrenheit, while Death Valley hit 128 degrees, two shy of the highest reliably measured temperature on Earth. Phoenix was expected to observe a record-breaking 19th consecutive day at or above 110 degrees Tuesday. And in the Middle East, the heat index reached 152 degrees, nearing — or surpassing — levels thought to be the most intense the human body can withstand.
Such conditions are more than enough to overwhelm the body’s ability to regulate its internal temperature, experts said, and offer a glimpse of dangers only expected to become more prevalent as global warming increases extremes in heat and humidity.
“We know these extreme temperatures are killing people right now,” said Cascade Tuholske, an assistant professor at Montana State University.
Without the help of air conditioning, fans or shade, the body only has its own cooling system to withstand heat. Some body heat can escape through convection and radiation, though that is only effective if the air temperature is lower than body temperature.
Otherwise, sweating is the only way to cool down, transferring heat from the body to the air as it turns from a liquid to a vapor. But that, too, has its limits.
“Sweating is only effective in cooling our bodies if it evaporates,” said Larry Kenney, a professor at Pennsylvania State University who studies physiological responses to heat. Sweat that pools on the skin or drips off “represents dehydration, without any cooling effect,” he said.
Research has shown the human body loses its ability to cool itself via sweating at 95 degrees (35 degrees Celsius) on a scale known as the wet bulb global temperature, which factors in a combination of temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle and cloud cover. Unlike the heat index, which rises above the air temperature based on humidity, the wet bulb globe temperature is not designed to be interpreted as a measure of how hot it feels outside.
A study Kenney published last year estimates that the body’s cooling systems struggle at an even lower wet bulb global temperature, closer to 88 degrees (31 degrees Celsius) even for young and healthy people, based on observations of volunteer test subjects in a weather-controlled chamber.
At that point, exposure to such heat and humidity can strain the heart and cause body temperatures to rise unabatedly, Kenney said. That’s why extreme heat is most dangerous for older people and those with heart conditions.
On Sunday at the Persian Gulf International Airport in Iran, air temperatures exceeded 100 degrees, and the air was nearly saturated with humidity. That translated to a wet bulb temperature of 92.7 degrees (33.7 degrees Celsius), according to data and a wet bulb conversion calculator from the National Weather Service.
The heat and humidity were so intense, they translated to a heat index value that was literally off the charts. The heat index is designed to max out at about 136 degrees, but on Sunday it surpassed 150 degrees in the Persian Gulf.
Well beyond the Middle East, wet bulb temperatures were approaching dangerous levels. Across the southwestern and southeastern United States, wet bulb temperatures hovered in the upper 80s to around 90 degrees on Monday, according to Weather Service data.
Research published in 2020 found that dangerously high wet bulb temperatures are occurring far more frequently — more than twice as often since 1979.
This year, the extreme conditions are occurring alongside a large surge in global heat. It is the product of a resurgent planet-warming El Niño climate pattern on top of greenhouse gas-driven warming.
The planet experienced record warmth in June, and the trend also extends to Earth’s oceans.
The waters around Florida, where residents used to steamy conditions are experiencing record heat and humidity this year, have surged close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. That means, Tuholske added, that not even a dip in the ocean can provide relief from the heat.
“The summer of 2023 is proving to be one of the hottest, if not the hottest and most dangerous,” Tuholske said.
