#fave spotting#lalla ward#doctor who#a ghost story for christmas#the ash tree#1975#romana#romana ii#spoilers for the ash tree ig????#i mean it's pretty obvious from the outset that Ed Petherbridge's aristo is not in for a good time#i mean he's a Jamesian protagonist for one thing....#lalla had been acting since the beginning of the decade‚ with a fair number of one off appearances on tv and the odd film to her name#(most notably Hammer's Vampire Circus). she was still a few years off DW and genre immortality at this point#it isn't the most rewarding role; James (who i don't think many would argue that he wasn't a bit of a chauvinist) rarely featured#significant women characters in his work (a large number of them being academical in setting didn't help). actually the ash tree#is something of an outlier in that regard‚ as it does feature a significant female character in Mrs. Mothersole‚ but we can hardly consider#her a positive feminine presence... actually one of Lawrence Gordon Clark's regrets about this particular entry in the Ghost Story for#Christmas canon is the failure of him and writer David Rudkin to make a true villain of Mothersile; Clark felt that their shared sympathies#for the historical victims of witchhunting prevented them from capturing the 'evil' of the character (tho it's debatable how much James#himself intended her to be truly evil; this is just Clark's opinion after all‚ and fwiw i think Rudkin's greater complexity of the#character is more interesting‚ more believable and more appropriate)#i rambled. anyway yes‚ not a meaty role perhaps‚ but Lalla sinks her teeth in all the same and in just a few brief scenes successfully#creates a vivid and fully realised character‚ a charming and flirtatious fiancée with something of a rebellious streak#no ash tree post bc i made one the last time i watched it a couple of years ago

We’ve been busy potting Amaryllis bulbs!
Time to plant, lots in pots ready or we have loose ones in gift boxes too.
Certainly a show stopper when they flower
Amaryllis are in indoor bulb.
When they flower they are magnificent.
They like well drained compost, so add a bit of grit or sand when planting

"You don't have a Christmas tree??? :0"
Okay, setting aside the fact that not everyone celebrates Christmas for a hot moment
I need people to be aware what a privilege having a Christmas tree actually is?
Having enough free space already or being able to move stuff around to make place for a whole fucking in your living space? I don't have that.
Having the money and other means (transportation) to even aquire a fucking tree in the first place? Plus the decorations? Not everyone has that.
Having enough money to be able to waste it on a tree you'll keep for a few weeks until it's dead only to then throw it out, just so it looks pretty and because it's traditional? Again, not everyone can afford that.
Or wants to, for that matter.
It's expensive, it's a waste, it's dirty. You are constantly cleaning needles off the floor.
"Just get a small artificial one :)"
That still costs money and is still a waste, and now it's also worse for the environment
And not everyone WANTS it. Because not everyone celebrates Christmas
People are so weirdly hung up on the tree thing. I've been called a grinch for it???
Bruh I live alone and don't celebrate Christmas. Leave me alone
#I also have a cat#A very active cat#Who loves climbing ladders#The tree wouldn't survive that either#Anyway rant over#Christmas can be annoying if you don't celebrate it#Yes I live in a majority Christian country so people will ask and assume#But I'm not Christian#This shit is why I always ask others first if they even celebrate#I often hear no#(I also live in a region with a large Turkish/Kurdish/general Muslim population)#I just think it's rude to assume religion in general#And even Christians don't always celebrate Christmas
