character aesthetics: lara antipova (doctor zhivago)
There's something broken in me, there's something broken in my whole life. I discovered life much too early, I was made to discover it, and I was made to see it from the very worst side—a cheap, distorted version of it—through the eyes of a self-assured, elderly parasite, who took advantage of everything and allowed himself whatever he fancied.

They didn’t look alike as themselves for sure (Julie looked much younger and appealing, and Peter wasn’t a natural blond) but them as Lara Antipova and Lawrence?? I mean c’mon. David Lean did you intend it really?
Propaganda
Julie Christie (Darling, Doctor Zhivago, Petulia)—Oh she is stunning, and just the best thing of mid 60s cinema. Eyes like lamps, and just gorgeous
Samia Gamal (Afrita Hanem)— Egyptian movie star and belly dancer oh my god she is ELECTRIC and unbelievably charismatic, the way she can move her body matched with that perfect smile will melt you
This is round 1 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut]
Julie Christie:
Samia Gamal:
#julie christie#peter o'toole#david lean#idk I should feel sorry or envious for Omar Sharif that he had to make out with a same face in two different films

Doctor Zhivago: Lara Antipova [ENFP]
OFFICIAL TYPING by Charity / the Mod.
Extroverted Intuition (Ne): Lara is a dreamer, who changes her mind frequently, sometimes within a few sentences of an assertion (she tells Yury to go back to his wife, since she’s a far better person than Lara, then begs him to stay with her a moment later). She’ll often change her mind completely about people and situations; she expresses distaste for her mother’s lover at the start, becomes sexually involved with him (out of curiosity and a desire for “experience”), finds him lovely, and then comes to “despise him” within a short time, but still values the experiences he taught her (“he taught me all about men and women... together”). She frequently makes purely impulsive decisions based on others’ ideas (getting involved with a powerful man, getting married, moving away to become a teacher, out of a desire to escape her current situation, etc).
Introverted Feeling (Fi): She’s emotional, but doesn’t share her feelings or discuss them, in more than broad terms (“I hate myself,” “I’m a BAD person!”), and often fails to get in touch with her feelings when making decisions, by allowing her curiosity to take precedence (she becomes involved with a much older man, without her heart being involved; then she marries without love, in order to escape her situation). Lara is very kind and considerate of others on one hand (she’s sincere in her reassurances to Yury’s wife, and accepts his desire to return to her, at first), but also conducts an affair, primarily concerned with her own and Yury’s feelings. She’s confident in asserting her feelings at times (“I despise him!”). In a desire to connect to her husband, she over-shared details of her affair, which damaged their relationship (she failed to sense his likely reaction, and trusted his desire to be “honest with one another”).
Extroverted Thinking (Te): She prefers direct action to internal musing on logical terms -- a sexual affair, she thinks, can make her “not a child anymore.” He can teach her about sex, and how to please men! And marriage will get her out of this affair! She can be a nurse too! But whenever Lara makes decisions without her heart’s involvement, she comes to regret them, and resent those who participate in her actions. Lara can be very frank at times; she doesn’t mince words, and she even tries to shoot the man she despises, after he coerces her into continuing their affair.
Introverted Sensing (Si): Her former interactions with the villain influence her feelings about him in the present; she has semi-traditional views on marriage and family, but shows little sentiment for the past (the only thing she uses is her sexual knowledge, in her new marriage; which upsets her husband).
Note: I’m a bit undecided on Yury. He’s an INFX. His intense inner emotionality and lack of communication about his feelings make me think Fi-dom (along with his need to translate his feelings into poetry, rather than direct communication); but at times he shows flits of Ni-foresight, blended with idealism and Fe-compromising. I suspect he’s clearer in the book.
