Chapter 3 of A Surprisingly Effective Punishment

Because the only person who could stay and help Sam recover was the reason he was hurt. Jamie didn’t have anywhere to be. He had sprained his shoulder and damaged his wrist ligaments in trying to get out and to Sam and had at least a couple of weeks before Roy would let him anywhere near a football pitch. So he didn’t have anywhere else to be, he didn’t want to be anywhere else, but he also knew that he was the last person Sam would want anywhere near him right now.

Isaac hadn’t wanted to leave after Jamie and Sam were released from the hospital. Jamie could see it in the tension in his shoulders and the sharp line of his jaw as he clenched his teeth. But the boys had a midweek game back down in London and Sam had been recommended not to travel any long distances until his ribs had healed up a bit and his concussion symptoms had faded. The greyhounds couldn’t be missing two of their best attacking players and their captain. He needed to leave. So did Roy, so did Dani, so did everyone else that Sam might actually want there to help him heal. Jamie had sat there through Sam reassuring his father that he was ok and that Ola didn’t need to leap on the next available plane to Manchester. Each of these facts just stabbed the knife deeper into Jamie’s heart. Because the only person who could stay and help Sam recover was the reason he was hurt. Jamie didn’t have anywhere to be. “It’s not gourmet or nutritionist approved but smells good,” Jamie murmured, grabbing the plate of room service pasta and placing it down on the laptray across Sam’s legs. Rebecca had put them up in a hotel of the likes Jamie had never stayed in before and reassured them that all costs were being paid for by her and to not worry about a thing. She had said comfort was the reason, Jamie knew the real reason was the security in the lobby. No one wanted any of the Tartt goons coming after Sam again, now that he was pressing charges. “And I’ve got your meds and a Lucozade. The hotel only had the blue one but I know how much you hate the blue one so I went out and bought a whole load of the orange ones and also caramel chocolate cause I know that’s your favourite too,” Jamie rambled making sure everything was in reach of Sam’s good arm on the settee.

“Jamie,” Sam sighed, his words still quiet and raspy as he did everything to try and avoid jostling his ribs.

“Yeah. If you’re not up to the pasta right now I’m sure it’ll keep and I’ve got the anti-nausea meds too…”

“No Jamie, I’m good. The pasta is nice thank you. What did you get?” Sam asked.

“Oh just some chips,” Jamie sighed. “If that’s all you need I’ll just,” he tilted his head towards the bedroom. He had been spending every waking moment either tending to Sam or in there. Sam didn’t deserve having to deal with all Jamie’s mess as well as his own. Sam didn’t deserve any of this.

“Jamie, stay please,” Sam groaned.

Jamie froze in place, fully deer in the headlights at Sam’s request. “You need something?”

“I need you to get your chips. Come sit here and watch TV with me,” Sam stared at Jamie expectantly as he shuffled in place. He had promised that he could do whatever Sam wanted of him. He just hadn’t expected Sam to want to spend time with him. He shouldn’t. He had already hurt Sam enough. But then surely denying Sam his request would hurt him to.

“I don’t know if I should. I could hurt you,” Jamie whispered.

“I am the most protected, the most bubble wrapped imaginable. I want to cuddle, my ribs can handle it,” Sam argued. “I am sure Jamie, please,” he added open seeing Jamie’s eyebrows furrow and mouth open no doubt. Jamie had promised himself that he would do whatever Sam asked, to atone. He had to do this.

“Tell me if it hurts,” Jamie sighed, and Sam nodded with a faint smile. Slowly and carefully Jamie shifted all the blankets and sunk onto the settee on Sam’s good side with his bowl of chips resting on Sam’s lap tray. Sam was quick to move to pull the duvet up over Jamie as well but at the slightest wince from Sam, Jamie leapt into action. Only once he was curled up, warm did Jamie realise that his motherhenning had been used against him.

“Does it hurt?” Jamie asked when he looked over and saw moisture gathering in Sam’s eyes.

“No, but my heart hurts that you still blame yourself,” Sam whispered. Jamie shuffled, looking around the room at everything but Sam. “I’ve told you. It wasn’t your fault. It was your father’s and that’s why he’s going to jail. I don’t blame you Jamie.”

“You should,” Jamie bite back, with more venom than he had planned when he opened his mouth. “It’s my fault he was even anywhere near you. I was such an idiot,” Jamie cursed, digging the nails from his good hand into his leg.

“He made his own choices. He decided to do that to you, which was incredibly fucked up and he decided to do what he did to me,” Sam sighed, pulling Jamie in to lean against his side and Jamie didn’t want to fight it. He wanted it so bad. Sam’s body was warm and the feeling started to loosen some of the tension that had been the only thing holding Jamie together since he got the pub’s call.

“Also incredibly fucked up,” Jamie muttered.

“Very. But nothing you did was wrong. You’ve been the best friend I could have wished for in looking after me now it’s my turn.”

“No you’re more hurt and if I hadn’t have gone to him this wouldn’t happened,” Jamie tried to recoil but for someone with less than the required number of ribs working, Sam’s grip was tight.

“If I hadn’t tracked your phone then this wouldn’t have happened, does that make it my fault?” Sam asked, shattering everything within Jamie with that simple question.

“Of course not!” Jamie yelled, even if he didn’t know anything else he would know that deep down to his core. “But, but, he’s my dad,” Jamie whispered, as Sam’s hand made it’s way up to rub circles into the back of Jamie’s neck.

“Family is a choice. You can share my dad, he’s great. He loves you,” Sam smiled but the smile fell at the skeptical huff from Jamie. “He does. You know what was the only reason he didn’t jump on that plane? Because I told him you were not leaving my side.”

“Really?” Jamie’s eyes were rebelling against him and watering just like Sam’s now and there was nothing Jamie could do to keep the pathetic whimper out of his voice. Ola liked him?

“He’s always had a weak spot for a stray,” Sam chuckled and that was it. All shreds of composure were ripped away and the sob dragged itself out of Jamie’s chest.

“I’m so sorry,” Jamie cried, burrowing his face into Sam’s shoulder.

“I know,” Sam started to sniffle.

Jamie didn’t know how long they sat there, crying for the pain they had been through, clinging to each other for a life raft, but he didn’t want it to stop.
