    LAP-BAND REMOVAL
Tumblr media
Lap Band removal surgery is a procedure to take out the adjustable gastric band that was placed around the upper part of the stomach to treat obesity. The Lap Band (or gastric band) limits the amount of food that can be eaten, helping patients feel full faster. However, in some cases, the band may need to be removed due to complications, failure to lose weight or patient preference.
Why Does the Need for Lap Band Removal Occur?
There are several reasons why Lap Band removal may be necessary:
Slippage or Erosion: The band may slip out of its correct position, or in some cases, erode into the stomach, leading to pain, nausea, vomiting, and infection.
Failure to Lose Weight: Some patients may not achieve the expected weight loss or may even regain weight over time.
Severe Acid Reflux: The band can sometimes cause or worsen acid reflux, making it difficult for patients to eat or sleep comfortably.
Infections or Complications: Infections, intolerance, or inflammation at the band site can also necessitate removal.
How Can We Protect Against Obesity-Related Issues?
Preventing obesity and, by extension, the need for interventions like Lap Band surgery requires a combination of healthy lifestyle choices. Some key practices include:
Balanced Diet: Focus on a diet rich in whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains while minimizing processed and sugary foods.
Regular Exercise: Incorporating physical activity, such as walking, swimming, cycling, or strength training, can help maintain a healthy weight.
Mindful Eating: Avoid overeating by eating slowly, controlling portion sizes, and recognizing feelings of fullness.
Stress Management: Emotional eating often contributes to weight gain. Practicing mindfulness, meditation, or other relaxation techniques can help manage stress effectively.
Regular Checkups: Regular visits to a healthcare provider can help detect and manage weight-related issues before they escalate.
Precautions and Lifestyle Modifications
After bariatric surgery or Lap Band placement, certain precautions can help prevent complications and reduce the need for removal:
Follow Dietary Guidelines: Patients should follow the dietary recommendations provided by their healthcare team. This includes eating small portions, chewing thoroughly, and avoiding high-fat or sugary foods.
Regular Follow-ups: Patients must adhere to scheduled follow-up appointments to monitor their progress and ensure the band is functioning correctly.
Hydration: Drinking enough water is crucial, but it’s advised to avoid drinking during meals to prevent discomfort.
Recognize Warning Signs: Any symptoms like severe nausea, vomiting, or chest pain should be reported immediately, as they could indicate a problem with the band.
Treatment and Alternatives
If Lap Band removal becomes necessary, there are various treatment options available to maintain weight loss:
Revisional Bariatric Surgery: After Lap Band removal, some patients may opt for alternative bariatric surgeries like gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy, which have higher long-term success rates in maintaining weight loss.
Lifestyle Adjustments: For patients who choose not to undergo another surgical procedure, working closely with a dietitian and incorporating exercise into daily life can help control weight.
Medications: In some cases, weight-loss medications may be prescribed to help manage appetite and reduce calorie intake.
Lap Band removal surgery is typically safe and provides relief from complications associated with the band, though it’s essential to work closely with healthcare professionals to determine the best course of action for ongoing weight management.

So, it turns out that periodic maintenance on your cybernetic parts is important.
The good news: no pouch, placement good, metabolic panel fine (not quite good), no leakage.
The bad: Regained about 50% of total loss. A total drain+refill has the effects of a moderate top-up. Going up from there was a mistake and I got to experience my first acute overtightened symptoms. Luckily, they could take me on an emergency basis 23 hours later and drain me back down to my exact old volume (where I'd held almost all my loss for 4 yrs and then slowly-slowly crept up until start of the year when I put back about a third of my loss since Jan 1).
Where we are: good level of restriction, feeling good, practice is a leader in synergistic use of surgery and GLP-1 agonists, going to discuss that at followup start of next month.

it's time for the 72-hour after action report!
this was a deeply Weird experience. unlike other times wherein I've gotten vaccines and/or boosters, the only thing that happened in the first twelve hours was that my arms hurt and I was very tired. they hurt a LOT, but by the twelve hour mark and my second bedtime, I genuinely thought I'd gotten off basically scott-free from a vaccine reaction.
and then I hit 1 am, and the 15 hour mark.
I woke up freezing, feverish, desperately thirsty and too weak to reach for the water bottle on my bedside table. my entire body felt bruised, and I was wracked with chills. I didn't have the strength to reach for my water or my phone for four excruciating hours. I couldn't get out of bed for three hours after that.
I have no idea why it took so long for my immune system to notice what I'd done to it. I'm blaming my immunosuppressant.
I ate ibuprofen like skittles on saturday, but any time it started to wear off the fever and the body aches revved up again.
yesterday, I was able to go to the store to buy juice, but it flattened me.
it's monday now. I'm still running an intermittent low-grade fever, I'm still tired and my bones still hurt, but that's just business as usual with an autoimmune disease. unless I have a dramatic relapse, I'll be going back to work tonight.
now. would I recommend anyone else do this?
no. absolutely not. maybe it'd be less unpleasant for someone without immune system issues (or a puppy, I can't pretend Nola's insistence on stepping on all my tender spots wasn't a contributing factor), but this experience genuinely sucked.
did I learn anything from this experience?
NOPE.
I have a bad time with vaccines, no matter how many I get at a time, and even tho my brain and memory got cooked by the aforementioned autoimmune disease, this is nowhere near the most painful thing I remember doing to myself.
I will probably end up doing this to myself again.
never let it said I'm not an overachiever

On Weight Loss and Morality
Conversations around weight and weight loss have always been contentious.
The oft repeated mantra of weight loss has been “there is no silver bullet.”
It’s a jeering remark meant to chide dieters for trying anything beyond eating skinless chicken breast and 20 hours a week working out.
If you want to lose weight you have to pay the penance for every excess pound. You have to earn it.
Their smug satisfaction of watching weight loss aids fail is salt in the wound. They snickered at limitations and failure of Amphetamines, PhenFen, Ephedrine, Orlistat, LapBands, and Gastric Bypass.
See? You can’t cheat your way out. You did this to yourself, now you must suffer the consequences.
An anti weight loss movement emerged in opposition to this mentality. Body positivity is a healthy response to diet culture; making the radical assertion that existing in your body, the way it is, without trying to change, is not only okay, it’s a good thing.
Love your body and focus on being healthy. Your weight is not your worth. This cannot be said enough. Your worth in this world is not related to how your body looks.
When around came GLP-1 medications, the reactions have been fascinating.
The drugs themselves are remarkably effective, and instead of targeting the weight, they correct the underlying metabolic problem. They’ve been on the market for years and are generally known to be safe.
The ire toward them, is in some ways unsurprising.
No! You can’t do it the easy way! You have to work at it!
You’re stealing them from the deserving- the diabetics. Ironically, the same people they blame for their own illness.
The body positivity crowd response is fascinating as well. Taking the drugs is a betrayal. You shouldn’t want to change your body. You’re giving into diet culture. You shouldn’t want to fit conventional beauty standards.
The response has been negative from both sides. People feel entitled to police the bodies and choices you make about your body.
Both of these reactions are moral judgments. You have to pay for your sins. Either for gluttony or vanity.
The thing is, there should be no judgement at all.
Weight loss requires a lot of mental energy. You have to commit your mental and physical energy to it. There are a million reasons why someone can’t or doesn’t want to do that. And that’s okay. There is no reason why you should feel obligated to.
However, ignoring the very real disabling effects of obesity is also a kind of denial of humanity. It’s not anyone’s business, and to condemn someone for trying to prevent or correct the effects is kind of cruelty all its own.
There’s no reason someone should have to justify their desire to change their bodies or their efforts to do so.
Try to love your body, regardless of its size, but it’s okay if you want to lose weight and you don’t have to justify your reasons or your decision to use medication to do it.
Everyone else, support people if they choose to change their bodies as well as when they choose not to. It’s not your decision, your business or your place to judge them.
We, the body positivity advocates don’t criticize trans people for changing their bodies because they’re unhappy with the way it looks. We don’t shame people with disfiguring congenital defects who choose to have corrective surgery; even when it poses no health risk. We understand the very real effects of social stigma, and wouldn’t criticize them for avoiding it.
You’re punishing people trying to lose weight for the sins of vanity and envy.
The other assholes, you wouldn’t tell a cancer patient “there’s no silver bullet” or snicker when an experimental or risky treatment fails. You don’t tell people with high blood pressure or high cholesterol that taking medicine is “taking the easy way out.” You know it’s cruel, you simply want to punish people for the sins of gluttony and sloth.
All I’m saying is - leave the people taking weight loss meds alone.
Weight is not a moral issue.
Weight is not a moral issue.
Weight is not a moral issue.
Weight is not a moral issue.
Weight is not a moral issue.

Tour Guide!Bakugo
Izuku and Todoroki, walking up to the door:
Bakugo, stops Izuku: No food.
Izuku: I don’t have any food.
Bakugo: I smell it.
Todoroki, smells:…Cheetos.
Izuku: Okay, fine. It’s just a snack…and a bag of fruit punch. But I promise you, I won’t spill it.
Bakugo: Rules are: no food, drinks, smoking…Flash pictures. No loud noises, hand lotions, tattoos with wolves-
Todoroki: Dang.
Bakugo: No spaced-out faces, lapbands, and bodily fluids.
Izuku, reaches into his pocket: Okay, I’ll get rid of the Cheetos.
Bakugo, smirks: I already disposed of them.
Izuku, freaked out and feels his pockets:…Holy crap.

One thing I did not anticipate about this weight loss journey is how many people have, on the tail end of me saying I'm working out, asked me if I thought about lapband/gastric bypass/whatever else there is.
Why is this apart of the conversation?
Losing weight is just a byproduct.
I'm trying to:
Fall in love with myself again
Create a better relationship with food
Unlearn what foods I think I "deserve"
Give myself more energy
Be able to walk with friends and not be winded/throw up while I do so.
Learn how much my body can do when given the right tools.
And surgery is not in any of these. So can we please change the conversation?
This isn't me knocking anyone who has had it. I know you have to put in alot of work. I fully understand.

Post workout options:
Some of the more advanced post workout options include BCAA, Muscle Builder, creatine, and other Amino Acids. As always, there is the nitrous oxide or GHOST PUMP. What other things can you add? I personally added Glycine for muscle repair and recovery. Lycine for athletic performance. Follic Acid for new cell growth and management. Chlorella and Spirulina for athletic performance as well.
Even some protein powders contain these things. Many greens powders contain many common greens such as Wheat Grass, Chlorella and Spirulina.
Right now I am using BCAA and Pump. Sometimes both together as a pre and post workout drink.
Remember that everyone is different, and everyone reacts to things differently. Try new things and find what works. Again, everyone’s exercise experience and journey is unique. No one takes the same stuff. Nobody looses weight at the same pace.
Some of us cut out sugars. Some of us embrace sugar free. Some of us use stevia. Some of us avoid bananas. Some of us cut out dairy. Some us use the Lapband.
Personally? I cut out alcohol, junk foods, breads, and sugars.
I am going to share my recipe for a Robust Italian Tomato Soup.
I use vegetable stock. You can use Chicken, Turkey or Beef. (Beef for the MOST Robust experience) One Chicken or Beef bouillon cube does the job too. Ramen Noodles in a pinch.
You can serve it spicy or not. The spicy version is a Mexican/Italian Fusion soup. (Italian fuses really well with Mexican and Chinese. Dunno why.)
1 Cup Chopped Sweet Vidalia Onions
2 Cup Low Sodium Tomato Sauce
2 cans Italian Tomatoes (Add some ROTEL and Fire Powder if you wanna feel the burn!)
1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
1 Teaspoon Summer Savory (ESSENTIAL for soup. You will thank me later.)
1/4 Teaspoon Garlic. Fresh preferred, but powder will do. (1 teaspoon if you wanna keep the vampires away. 1 teaspoon per bowl if you still wanna have a strong ani vampire breath for most of next day. Lol)
Please note that If you have Italian Seasonings or Sicilian seasons may contain the above, plus many other ingredients that go well in soup like rosemary, basil, red pepper flakes, etc. IN MY OPINION, adding an extra Teaspoon of Italian and Sicilian seasoning makes it MORE FLAVORFUL. I sleep well at night, Vampire free.
Pinch of fresh ground pepper per bowl.
Pinch of Parmesan and Romano cheeses per bowl. FRESH if you can. If combined, add two pinches.
Pour 4 cups of stock into your pot. If using cubes or ramen packets, use two. Oddly enough, chicken and beef goes well together. Use one of each.
Add your Olive Oil
Add your spices, except the pepper. (If you want it spicy, see below for my custom Fire Powder)
Bring the pot to a boil. Add the sauce, drained tomatoes. Onions. Boil for 30 minutes.
Add pinch of pepper and cheese at the bottom of the bowl.
Fire Powder for that KICK you been missing from life
1 tablespoon Cayenne Pepper
1 tablespoon Red Pepper Flakes
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon cumin
1 pinch of black pepper
Mix together, really sake it up well. Use a quarter or half teaspoon per bowl. Watch it! It’s 🔥🔥🔥

Excited, not excited.
Well it’s coming... I’ve scheduled LapBand to VSG surgery for January 26, 2019. If you read through the mess that is my other blog, you know that I had LapBand surgery in May of 2010. At the time, I weighed over 320 lbs. I thought that LapBand was the best solution for me because, “Hey... at least they aren’t taking any pieces of me out,” but it turns out that it wasn’t my best decision. After 3 successful years of regular weight loss, my band slipped. I was 168 lbs. at the time and barely holding liquids down, despite the pleas to my doctor to take some of the liquid out of my band. So I had to start all over. My band was emptied, and then slowly filled again. Then it slipped again. And again. After the third attempt, I was deemed “non-functional” and that was it. Now the LapBand just sits inside of me, completely useless. Except for the times when it slips for no reason and makes me vomit so hard I get a headache and see stars in my eyes. I’ve gained every pound back (probably thanks more to vodka then to food). Recently, I’ve started having stabbing sciatic pain. I’m only thirty-fucking-seven years old. I shouldn’t be tired. I shouldn’t get winded at the thought of walking from the car into work. I shouldn’t have to make decisions on doing something fun based on if there will be chair for me to sit in. Time to take action. Tons of research lead me to Dr. Alvarez at Endobariatric just over the border in Piedras Negras, Mexico. Yes... MEXICO. The reason I haven’t done this surgery already is because its too fucking expensive and not covered by insurance. But in Mexico it’s relatively cheap. So it’s done! Booked, paid for! I have a 21-day pre-op “full liquid” diet ahead. Then after surgery it’s 7-days of clear liquid, 14-days of full liquid, 7 days of soft foods, then back to normal. The tough part? NO VODKA... for THREE MONTHS... not looking forward to that part. The liquid diet is a piece of cake compared to that. I’ll have to power through. I’m hoping that you will help with that. Just listen to me bitch and it will make me feel better (I hope). We will see. For now, I’m making a bucket list of the places/foods I want to eat before the liquid diet begins on January 5th. Let’s eat!
