Immoral X-men #3 / SoS part 8
So we’ve reached the final leg of this story, the 1000 year mark. There’s a lot of summarizing about stuff that happened off screen…all pretty much cosmic scaled stuff. The abridged version;
Rasputin breaks into an Exodus planet thingy in the opening in what I gotta admit is a good opening sequence. It’s very action horror in its setup, so kudos. She escapes with Sinister; they initiate a space kaiju fight between Exoduses, then narrate about going through other things the other council of evil peeps have going on.
They get an audio cylinder that Destiney put in place long long time ago for Sinister to get. One story short, she knew the timeline was screwed and says she’ll join Sinister if he resets the timeline because she screwed over reality to keep her wife alive, and since Raven’s dead, well…
Rasputin over heard all that though
Oh thank ra his “I want to save everyone” heel turn was just to manipulate her.
Anyways, they fight, he jettisons her into space so he can escape to go pick up Moira-bot and a Doombot.
Moving over to Emma…
She’s gone full Lannister I think. Turns out Beast has the Doombot’s WiFi password or something so they know that Sinister is after his Moira clones. Emma summons her armies to go chase after him.
So back to Sinister, they get to the World Farm that Storm and co stole last time. And hey what do you know, the random fanboy actually aged this time! He still shouldn’t be alive after 1000 years from the present, but hey being 80 something is close enough right?
She also gets skinning people happy too, since she actually did that she twice I think (or was she holo projecting MJ’s appearance? Virtually wearing her skin is better I guess…)
The book ends back on Rasputin though, and I’m not sure if it’s Emma or Ms Hearts offering her the chance to go get revenge on Sinister. Either way I’m still wondering how this fit with the PoX segments Rasputin was in from before since there’s no Cardinal…or are they not supposed to connect?
Overall, I’d say this is probably the best Immoral book of the three. It’s pretty clear cut what’s going on, the end game is starting, and even though it has a bunch of telling what happened in the ridiculous time-skip, it at least felt like it glossed over minor things.

Do you think it's possible that Pycelle kept Elia in poor health? Or if it more likely that she brought her own master from Dorne.
hmmm that’s an interesting idea. I’m not sure it would really work, though.
Elia was at Dragonstone for much of her marriage, while Pycelle was serving the court in King’s Landing.
Early in the year 279 AC, Rhaegar Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone, was formally betrothed to Princess Elia Martell, the delicate young sister of Doran Martell, Prince of Dorne. They were wed the following year, in a lavish ceremony at the Great Sept of Baelor in King’s Landing, but Aerys II did not attend. […]
When Prince Rhaegar and his new wife chose to take up residence on Dragonstone instead of the Red Keep, rumors flew thick and fast across the Seven Kingdoms. Some claimed that the crown prince was planning to depose his father and seize the Iron Throne for himself, whilst others said that King Aerys meant to disinherit Rhaegar and name Viserys heir in his place. Nor did the birth of King Aerys’s first grandchild, a girl named Rhaenys, born on Dragonstone in 280 AC, do aught to reconcile father and son. When Prince Rhaegar returned to the Red Keep to present his daughter to his own mother and father, Queen Rhaella embraced the babe warmly, but King Aerys refused to touch or hold the child and complained that she “smells Dornish.”
I don’t think Elia travelled with Rhaegar to King’s Landing to present Rhaenys to court, because Elia was “bedridden for half a year.”
Elia was obviously at the Tourney at Harrenhal in 281, but it was my understanding that she then returned to Dragonstone, where she gave birth to Aegon VI in late 282 or early 283.
AFAIK, it’s unclear exactly when Elia and her children were brought to King’s Landing during the Rebellion. Given that “Prince Aegon’s birth had almost been the death of her” I think it likely that her bedrest / confinement on Dragonstone was more than “half a year” this time around, since this second pregnancy had such a severe effect on her health.
I assume she was brought to King’s Landing in late 282 or early 283. tbh I lean toward late 282, when Robert’s army was in the Reach but *shrug emoji*
We know Elia was in KL before the Battle of the Trident, in (mid?) 283. She must have been in King’s Landing when Rhaegar returned from the south and had that last conversation with Jaime. After Rhaegar’s death at the Trident, she was supposed to be sent on to Dragonstone with Rhaella, but instead Aerys kept her as a hostage against Martell loyalty.
So, anyways, I’m not sure that Pycelle and Elia were in the same castle together for more than a few months at the end there.
Possibly Pycelle might have done something to sabotage Elia’s health at the end, but … why? Don’t get me wrong, Pycelle was obviously Tywin’s man, but why act only in increments, if he was harming her? Why the half measures, when he was ready to move fully against Jon, Robert, and Aerys all three on behalf of House Lannister?
“if [the boar had] left the job half done, doubtless you [Pycelle] would have finished it.“ –Tyrion, ACOK
So if Aegon VI had “left the job half done,” so to speak, why wouldn’t Pycelle have just finished it? And if the consensus was that Elia could have no more children, and if Pycelle wished to move against the Martell-Targaryens and clear the way for House Lannister, why not go after a bigger prize instead? Babes die in their cradles all the time.
So idk. It’s possible that Pycelle was poisoning Elia in some way, but I think the simpler explanation for her poor health was her lifelong condition, as well as the two pregnancies. And there’s a very limited window of opportunity for Pycelle there at the end of the Rebellion, and I tend to think that Pycelle was like Tywin during the Rebellion - holding his breath, and waiting to see how the dice would land.
Whether or not Elia had a Dornish maester … possibly. Perhaps the Unnamed Princess of Dorne – or Doran (the timeline is murky here, and I’m not convinced GRRM himself has even bothered with it) – paid for the services of a maester as a wedding gift to Elia. There would have been maester(s) on Dragonstone, but noble households may have more than one maester.
Whether or not the ruler of Dorne gifted Elia with a maester … I’m not sure he would definitely be Dornish? The Citadel assigns maesters, and there’s surely a lot of systemic racism going on? As well as a lot of internal politics over who gets to be near Prince Rhaegar. So, possibly, idk.

Countdown to Red Wedding: 7
Let me jump back a ways in the timeline for this one.
At some point between Whispering Wood and the totally pointless sieges of Darry and Duskendale, Tywin Lannister developed a "quills and ravens" strategy for dealing with the Stark-Tullys. He realized he didn't know how to beat them on the battlefield, so instead he made it so the battlefield didn't matter.
All those victories Robb won after Whispering Wood were low-hanging fruit, at best. He spent so much time raiding the Westerlands because he was trying to bait Tywin back there. Which means even he knows all those captures don't amount to much.
Tywin decided he didn't have to be an enemy on Robb Stark's terms.
I theorized he first went after Roose Bolton. Didn't need to convince him 100% at the start, just needed to get him into conversation.
From there, Tywin heard about stuff happening, like...the Greyjoys taking over the North, for instance. That much was all over the realm. Possibly from his correspondence with Roose Bolton, or possibly from other spies in the Stark camp, Tywin heard about Rickard Karstark acting like the war wasn't meeting his expectations. It wouldn't take a genius of espionage to find out some of the river lords were getting antsy.
I'm sure Tywin knows Walder Frey is a weak link in the alliance, at best. He also knows if Robb loses the Freys, the bottom falls out of his army. However, I've also theorized that Tywin would rather not interact with Walder Frey if he can avoid it. For dealing with the old weasel, he goes to Roose Bolton.
At some point, Tywin decides the most efficient way to defeat the Young Wolf is to take away his allies. This strategy allows him to devote most of his military resources to defeating Stannis Baratheon.
In the process of taking away Robb Stark's allies, the greatest gift came from Sybell Spicer.
For Sybell, I'll have to do some speculating that'll look sort of like writing fanfic.
Sybell is married to Gawen Westerling, lord of the Crag. He gets captured at Whispering Wood, but don't worry, Sybell has her brother, Ser Rolph Spicer, to serve as castellan of the Crag.
House Spicer is a fairly new house, which is kind of a point against them, in Westerosi nobility. Sybell and Rolph's grandparents were spice merchants from Essos. Economically successful, yes. In terms of their place in the culture of noble Westeros families, they still have a lot of work to do.
Sybell and Rolph's grandmother was Maggy the Frog. That's not the sort of image they want to project now. At the same time, Maggy passed some skills on to her grandchildren, and they still utilize those skills. Quietly.
Sybell developed her noble cred by marrying into the Westerlings, a much older (and poorer) family. When her husband was taken prisoner, that may have left Sybell feeling a bit insecure. Maybe she felt like she had to do something to shore up her family's position and her children's futures.
One of those children is her beautiful and sweet eldest daughter, Jeyne. Based on what we see of Jeyne in AFFC, she was not knowingly a part of her mother's scheme. She really, really loved Robb and she is devastated at his loss. So I'm thinking, maybe Sybell got her idea starting with Jeyne developing a ridiculous fan-crush on the King in the North. It would annoy the shit out of her mother, especially after Gawen was captured.
I'm thinking, maybe Sybell had some conversations with Rolph, and at some point they realized they could put Jeyne to good use. They must know the Freys are part of Robb's alliance. It's not a leap to say they know how much the Northern cause depends on having the Freys on their side. They've probably heard about King Robb being promised to an unspecified Frey girl.
At some point, before the Blackwater, Sybell sends a raven to her liege Tywin Lannister and tells him how she'd like to help. She doesn't need to go into detail about the skill set she learned from her foreign grandmother. She can just say...she has a daughter about the same age as Robb Stark, and she's totally enamored of all the tales she's heard about the King in the North. She can say her Jeyne is much prettier and more cultured than the Frey girls, and if they can get Robb behind closed doors with Jeyne, she will be able to seduce him. Once he's been seduced, Sybell will make sure they marry. Meanwhile she will also make sure Jeyne doesn't get pregnant before Robb bends the knee. In order to make this happen, they need Robb to capture the Crag.
Let's say Tywin gets the raven from Sybell shortly after the ambush at Oxcross. That was low-hanging fruit; would've been nice if Cousin Stafford had succeeded at training new soldiers, but Tywin wasn't exactly betting the castle on Cousin Stafford's success. That's near the Golden Tooth. From there, it's a quick trip to the Marbrands at Ashemark. They're related to Tywin on his mother's side and he has a good rapport with them. From Ashemark, it's a quick trip to the Crag.
Relatives or no, Tywin's not gonna tell them everything. He tells them as much as they need to know, which is that he needs them to do something for him, and he's got their backs. His instructions to the Marbrands could be something like: First, send most of your garrison to my camp, as I need them for fighting Stannis Baratheon. Let the Northmen see them on the road. If Robb Stark comes to capture your castle, let him do it. Once he's in there, gently encourage him to move on to the Crag. Once he goes to the Crag, let's just say it won't be long until the Northmen leave your castle.
Oxcross is a "meh" victory, and Ashemark is hardly even a tale worth telling. Then he moves on to the Crag, where Ser Rolph has made sure to leave the castle "weakly garrisoned," so it doesn't take much for Robb to get them under his control. Ser Rolph puts up just enough of a fight to get an arrow in Robb's arm. He's playing Evil Cupid by putting a little something extra on the arrowhead, so the wound "festers" and Robb has to stay and recover. They put him up in Jeyne's room, where Jeyne takes excellent care of him. Around this time, news reaches the Starks of Theon Greyjoy having burned Winterfell and killed Bran and Rickon. That's when Sybell puts a little something extra in Robb's wine, but Jeyne doesn't know that. Jeyne only knows Robb needs her to comfort him. There's the "comfort," IOW fucking, and of course Sybell keeps on slipping Robb a little something extra while she gets the young lovers in front of a septon the next morning.
Meanwhile, at the Blackwater Rush, the Lannisters defeat Stannis Baratheon. Now the Lannisters look more like the winning side, so the Freys start thinking maybe they shouldn't be fighting for the Starks.
We know the story of the Late Walder Frey bringing his army to the Trident only after Robert Baratheon had won. That much is known. With or without Robb reneging on the marriage agreement, the Freys likely would have abandoned him soon after the Blackwater. They would've abandoned him because they wanted to be on the winning side.
It's totally possible to abandon a leader without murdering him.
Then before Walder Frey can make plans to bend the knee, transparently, to the Lannister regime...then there's the news of Robb having married someone else's daughter. I suspect that's when the Freys switched from "let's stop fighting for King Robb" to "let's murder King Robb."

George R.R. Martin might be busy finishing up The Winds of Winter, but the Game of Thrones creator has various other projects in the works. The prolific author is the brilliant mind behind the A Song of Ice and Fire series, which became the basis of one of the most acclaimed TV series in history. The title was such a success for HBO during its eight-season run that the network has strengthened the partnership with Martin in the hopes of developing equally as popular content.
While Martin's name will always be linked to Game of Thrones, he's also written or edited dozens of stories since his professional career started in the early '70s. In 1984, the author tried his hand in the entertainment industry, serving as a writer on the horror anthology series The Hitchhiker. After working on an episode of The Twilight Zone, Martin expanded his career even further, becoming a producer on the CBS series Beauty and the Beast. He also executive produced the TV adaptation of his sci-fi novella Nightflyers in 2018 after it was made into a move in 1987.

Since Game of Thrones came to an end in 2019, longtime fans of the series remained hopeful at the fact that Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series was still ongoing. Coincidentally, the HBO series bypassed the source material despite the author's promises that The Winds of Winter would be out by now. The sixth installment of the book series has been in development for over a decade, and once that comes out, work will need to get started on the presumed final novel, A Dream of Spring. The waits for those publishing dates could be delayed even longer considering the number of other projects Martin is working on, specifically for TV.
Out of all the Game of Thrones spinoffs in the works, House of the Dragon is the furthest along in development. The series, set to debut on HBO Max in 2022, serves as a prequel, documenting the beginning of the end for House Targaryen's reign. Starring Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, and Emma D'Arcy, House of the Dragon is based on content from Martin's Fire and Blood novel. The author currently serves as an executive producer on the series as part of his five-year partnership deal with HBO and HBO Max, worth somewhere in the mid-eight figures range.
Another series in development set within Martin's fictional Game of Thrones' world is Tales of Dunk and Egg. The prequel novella from Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series follows the future Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Ser Duncan the Tall, aka "Dunk," and the future king, Aegon V Targaryen, better known as "Egg" for his egg-shaped head. Set nearly a century before the events of the first Game of Thrones novel, HBO announced plans to adapt the Tales of Dunk and Egg short stories with the help of Martin.
In addition to House of the Dragon and the Tales of Dunk and Egg series, Martin is involved in creating four other Game of Thrones-related projects for HBO and HBO Max. As for the latter, the WarnerMedia streaming service is considering an animated Game of Thrones series. So far, there are no details announced regarding the plot's focus or news on the potential creative team. As for the other ideas being mulled at HBO, the first is Bruno Heller's 9 Voyages, a tale centered on seamen Corlys Velaryon's journeys on the Sea Snake. Then there's 10,000 ships, a show about the voyages taken by Princess Nymeria before she found Dorne. Last but not least, a show set in Flea Botton is reportedly in the works. The slum of King's Landing was memorably featured in multiple seasons of Game of Thrones. Martin is expected to be involved in all the above-mentioned projects as part of his HBO content creation deal.

If six Game of Thrones spinoff projects wasn't enough, Martin is currently developing a Broadway play based on the live-action adaptation of his A Song of Ice and Fire series. Unlike the aforementioned projects, the dramatic stage production will feature notable characters from the original TV series. More specifically, it will center on The Great Tourney at Harrenhal, a key moment in Westeros' history that took place 16 years before the show's events. Noted as the biggest tournament in Westeros' history, the Great Tourney of Harrenhal featured appearances by Ned Stark, Rhaegar Targaryen, Howland Reed, Lyanna Stark, Jaime Lannister, and Robert Baratheon. Shortly after the events, Rhaegar was presumed to have abducted Lyanna, but it was later confirmed the pair eloped. Martin is writing the play's story alongside playwright Duncan MacMillan. In addition to Broadway, the play stage production is expected to debut in London's West End and Australia, with a launch planned for 2023.
Aside from various Game of Thrones-related projects, Martin is involved in other titles outside of the Westeros realm. One of which is an HBO adaptation of Who Fears Death, a 2010 sci-fi fantasy novel by author Nnedi Okorafor. The story is set in the post-apocalyptic Sudan, where a young woman named Onyesowu goes on a journey of self-discovery. A TV series based on the novel has been in development since 2017, with Martin on board to executive produce. In early 2021, it was announced Tessa Thompson's new production company, Viva Maude, is backing Who Fears Death as part of the actress's deal with HBO and HBO Max. There's no word yet on who will star in the series.
In 2021, it was also announced Martin is heavily involved in bringing Roger Zelazny's sci-fi novel Roadmarks to the small screen. In fact, Martin is working with TV writer/director Kalinda Vazquez to develop the project for HBO. Published in 1979, Roadmarks centers on a highway that can travel through time. The certain exits on the highway lead to different moments in history, allowing people to rewrite the timeline. Game of Thrones fans will also be happy to hear the possibility of dragons returning to the network with Roadmarks. Martin previously helped adapt Zelazny's Last Defender of Camelot for The Twilight Zone in the mid-'80s.
Not all of Martin's upcoming TV projects will be set for HBO or HBO Max, considering the recent updates surrounding the Wild Cards adaptation. Consisting of books and short series, Wild Cards is set in a shared superhero universe during an alternate timeline following WWII. Specifically, the stories center on humans infected with an alien virus that can rewrite DNA, with some gaining superhuman abilities and others acquiring crippling conditions. Martin served as an editor on the series that included more than 40 authors. Originally set for Hulu with Martin producing, the TV adaptation has recently found a new home on Peacock.

In the Lost Lands marks the only source material intended for a feature film with Martin involved. Confirmed in early 2021, Martin's fantasy short story from 1982 will be brought to life on the big screen with Paul W.S. Anderson set to direct. The story follows a sorceress, Gray Alys, who is guided by a drifter named Boyce after being hired for a special journey. Milla Jovovich has signed on to play Alys, while Dave Bautista is set to portray Boyce in the film, which will feature the duo facing off with demons. There has been no announcement regarding a release date for this particular Martin project.
To cover all bases, Martin will also see his name attached to a video game in the near future with the release of Elden Ring. The action role-playing game is coming from the same studio that produced Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki is creating the dark fantasy game in collaboration with George R.R. Martin. Despite being in development since 2017, there's still no release date for the title set to release on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

🖊 for all the MacKenna siblings
I hope you don’t mind but I did some more like “general MacKenna” deep lore rather than just the sibllings... because... I maybe have been building up the family’s collective backstory a fair bit lately... sorry if this wasn’t quite what you asked for... but the muses took this one and ran with it.
🖊 - The MacKenna’s are loosely based on a family from my original fiction project I have been working on for… a very long time and will never finish… but their original characters were ment to be a family deeply intrenched with the criminal underworld and a lot has still carried over with MJ’s brothers (even Sean) all getting their starts in various criminal activities.
🖊 - Originally the whole family save MJ was supposed to die… along with John… this however was TOO DARK… and is now only referred to as “the darkest timeline”.
🖊 - Jimmy’s daughter, Claire, actually will play a fairly decent sized role as a secondary character in both the FC5 timeline and more importantly… the ND timeline. Mac’s children may pop up come ND with the HIghwaymen but this is still very up in the air as I am unsure of the state of Atlanta post collapse.
🖊 - Oddly enough another place that I took a lot influence for the dynamics of the MacKennas (and how they function as a family) from the Lannisters and Starks from GRRM’s ASOIAF. This is most apparent with how almost everything that deal with the siblings is usually always handled within the family (rarely involving John) and also the whole notion of “The lone wolf dies, the pack survives” also. This really comes into play once Colin fully splits from PEG.
🖊 - MacKenna family deep lore - Patrick MacKenna always had ties to the Russian mob (this is important for the story) that main connection was actually Ellie Ivonv’s (my friend’s ocs that features heavily in this story) father. This actually allows for the girls to have met as children when neither of them really remember… but the girls use to play while their father’s did business.
🖊 - Catherine MacKenna comes from a very large family as well… though all her siblings are girls. This actually factors hugely into her treatment and rivalry with her own daughter. Because Catherine was pitted often against her sisters growing up that she developed a lot of animosity towards other women… particularly those with in her own family.
🖊 - The Extended family is devout Catholic, several members of Patrick’s family going as far as to enter into the Clergy. This is probably most prevalent in Pre-PEG point in the story, most heavily featured when John and MJ get married by one of Patrick’s brothers who is a priest. After the family joins PEG this causes a massive rift within the larger MacKenna family, the family disowns the rest of MJ’s family. This is actually a fact that Patrick really struggles with in his last years.

Is Alys' story going to continue into the "canon" timeline shown in GoT, during Robert's rule? I'm curious how different things would be with Jon posing as her son, and if she and Jaime are married then the Stark-Lannister dynamic will of course be different... and ofc, no Cersei/Jaime going on so no reason for Bran to get pushed out of the tower and start that whole chain of events! I'm just so curious about how different it might be! And if Ned is in the know about Jon in this verse lol
Alys’s story will continue through the ‘canon’ timeline! It will be in a separate fic though and also with a large POV scope than The Other Stark Girl has. Aka while The Other Stark Girl focuses primarily on Alys and Jaime (with occasional exceptions) the sequel will be much broader, with multiple plot-lines, more POVs, and much more like ASOIAF itself. So Alys’s story in the sequel will only be one thread that is followed. (other threads include ones from ‘canon’, the children of Jaime and Alys, and then the Targaryen-Martell kids)
As for how different things will be... that is both the thing I am both looking forward to and dreading when I start plotting the sequel in full. Right now I know some of the major differences that will come, and the general idea of how most (not all though) things will go. Granted this is all in my head as I’ve yet to really write it all down and plot it out, mostly just a lot of thinking and daydreaming as plotting. I’m trying to balance it a good amount between what is ‘canon’ and what is changed. Obviously some things have to be different just by virtue of the changes that TOSG has caused. I’m also trying hard to be sure that I’m not forcing anything too hard (in either direction) as I want it to be realistic for how the plot flows. I want readers to be able to see how these chain of events happened, and how things ended up changed (or not). Mostly that means taking stock of what absolutely needs to still happen (funnily enough you mentioned Bran, I’ve mentioned it somewhere on tumblr but he does still fall! it just happens slightly different). I will say in my effort to do this I will have to change some things that aren’t changed because of actions of characters, more just me deciding that in order for the story to work I have to change this specific plot point (don’t know if that sentence made sense but whatever).
Anyway, I rambled mostly because The Other Stark Girl has become such a passion project for me and one of the things that gets me so excited is all the differences that are coming out of it. I’m literally going to pretty much be rewriting ASOIAF and that’s both daunting and very exciting!

@ajoblotofjunk put out a blanket ask to writers do here we are because I like rambling.
1, Which of your own finished fics have you re-read the most? Ooooof. i fear no fate (for you are my fate) probably. It is the one I dislike the least, I think. (Faint praise.)
2. Which of your own finished fics will you probably never read again because then you'll have to remember how much you don't like it/how hard it was to write/how annoying the fandom was/some other negative association? One million percent waiting to be consumed by you. I've never been happier in my life to finish a project and never have I been more disappointed in my execution of an idea.
3. You can only use one musical artist or poet just for lyric titles for the rest of your life: who would it be? I'm cheating and saying Hozier for canon timeline fics and Sara Bareilles for all AUs.
4. What's your favorite opening line you've ever written? Arya Stark knows the following things for certain:
1) Petyr Baelish is a creep;
2) Joffrey Baratheon is a menace;
3) She's going to murder Coach Lannister and Coach Tarth if they don’t just shut up and bone already.
5. What's your favorite closing line you've ever written? "And in the bravest moment of Ser Brienne of Tarth's life, she whispered, "I love you," against his mouth and kissed him again.
6. Which character would you include in more fics if you felt more confident writing them? Probably just other canon dynamics. I think I wish I was more comfortable writing the Jaime and Brienne that loathed one another. I'm just not terribly interested in that part of things. It also, in my opinion, isn't totally necessary in most AUs and I'm way more interested in the aftermath in canon when they're just aching with how impossible their feelings are. It's all well and good that Jaime was once the golden boy but his life just sucks so much now that all of the things he thought to be true have crumpled around him. I like that Jaime a lot more. Also, I just...am not funny, nor am I a particularly biting or cruel person and it makes me both uncomfortable and ill-at-ease in my own abilities to even attempt to write a true pre-losing-his-hand Jaime. (Also, QUITE FRANKLY, any modern AU Jaime that treats a modern AU Brienne the way canon Jaime treated canon Brienne when they are both adults deserves to be punted into the sun. I won't be accepting arguments at this time.)
7 What is one plot point or character or title you would change for any of your finished fics? I guess I wish I had the patience, gumption, wherewithal, whatever it would've taken, to write 300,000 words of Jaime and Brienne has vampires. I just didn't have the mental capacity to do it. It was genuinely too hard and too far outside of the stories I enjoy telling. Also. We Make the Rules was coming hot on the heels of it. We Make the Rules has been by far the most satisfying wonderful writing experience of my fandom life. I wish I could replicate that feeling and just get to feel it over and over again.

First?
I feel bad because I actually shared them few days ago, for my most recent project here. (Though they’ve been slightly edited since then.)
So you get first lines from something else! Or rather, same verse, but the third installment (which I started writing before any of the later ones which all happen before it, timeline wise.)
“Life, Brienne has found, has a way of giving and taking all at once, in an uncomfortable swirl of events and standstills that leave her either struggling for air or with too much time to breathe and think, think.
Right now, however, she thinks she's forgotten how to breathe at all, as she applies a touch of eyeliner on Jaime Lannister.”
Send me word for no excuses writing meme?

Knight-Errant
I’ve somehow gone over the 500 follower mark on this Jonsa sideblog and I’m thankful for every one of you. This community is wholesome as hell and really helps get through the slog of my personal life
To that end, here’s the rough draft of an AU fic I’m working on where Ser Barristan Selmy went North instead of East, looking to escape assassination attempts and serve the realm by exchanging his white cloak for a black one (the irony is not lost on him). The continuity I’m working with is a combination of book and show elements, things that make sense to me personally, and ofc shades of Jonsa (which I believe is canon but we’re not there yet folks) so please don’t think too hard about timelines and contradictions and such
I’ve got about seven chapters in various states of readiness but this is the one I think will most appeal to anybody seeing this post. It’s a fun project to work on and I’ll keep plugging away until it’s ready to be put on AO3 when all is said and done. I want to emphasize that this is a rough draft (I wrote it in about an hour before posting it here after noticing my followers count went over 500 and started yelling) so there are totally some typos and what have you going on
Anyway check it out I hope you enjoy it
A single horn blast rang through the courtyard. Arstan Whitebeard set his mouth in a firm line and stepped outside to watch the gates open. The big, oak doors had just been repaired from the giant’s break-in that morning and creaked open achingly slow.
Arstan stared down at the horses and riders as they entered. It was as an odd a grouping as he’d ever seen – a straw-haired knight in battered armor, a squire in what looked like faded Lannister red, and a tall girl in grey just behind them. They coaxed their horses into the courtyard warily, looking around at the men of the Watch and wildlings that crowded Castle Black.
Snow fell gently but persistently. Old wooden boards creaked beneath Arstan’s boots as Dolorous Edd and Jon Snow joined him on the balcony. They hadn’t expected any wandering crows or supplies caravans. These newcomers didn’t have the look of messengers.
Edd tapped his gloved fingers nervously on the bannister, but Arstan noticed Snow had gone oddly still. His eyes rose to the young man’s face and saw him staring intently at the three arrivals.
Snow shuddered and hurried to the stairs, wordless. Arstan and Edd were just a step behind him, brows furrowed. What was this?
Tormund gaped open-mouthed as the knight dismounted and helped the lady down. They turned to face Snow at the bottom of the stairs and Arstan started – he knew them. That was no knight, but the lady of Tarth. Her skill at arms in touneys had reached him in King’s Landing. Her squire was familiar but he couldn’t place the boy’s face.
The girl in grey was Ned Stark’s daughter. Taller than Arstan had last seen her, but he remembered her from the last weeks of his service at the capital. Arstan felt his face pale and hoped his beard was enough to keep him from being recognized. Surely he would not be found out after all this time?
Arstan’s gaze flickered from the girl and back to Snow, who had paused at the foot of the stairs still as a statue. Stark’s daughter swallowed uneasily, eyes only for Snow. Her bastard half-brother, Arstan realized. The snowflakes whirled gently between them.
Stark’s daughter – what was her name? – hesitantly stepped forward, timid. Snow mirrored her, arms loose at his sides. Then she lurched forward, mouth opening into a wordless cry. Snow rushed ahead and she leapt into his arms as they embraced.
They stood there, reunited. Arstan numbly thought that Snow hadn’t have expected to see his family again since joining the Watch; what misfortunate had brought the Stark girl here? They still stood there before the befuddled onlookers, quietly rejoicing. The lady of Tarth bowed her head in relief. Tormund was still gawking at the her in her armor.
After a long moment the two Starklings broke their embrace. Snow shouted for firewood and blankets; Edd waved at the gatekeeper to close the doors. Ser Davos ran over from across the courtyard, arms beckoning in question.
Arstan followed them back up the stairs but stopped outside the hall to give them some privacy. What had just happened?
***
He didn’t find out until the next morning when they broke their fast. Snow and Stark’s daughter gathered at a table in the mess hall with Edd, Davos, Tormund, and Brienne, the lady of Tarth. Arstan stood at the doorway as they broke bread and talked.
The tale the Stark girl – Sansa, her name was – told was hard to hear. She did not linger on the abuse she’d suffered from Lannisters and Boltons and Littlefinger but Arstan noticed Snow’s shoulders tighten. She’d won her freedom with the help of a dead man, and Brienne led her safely here.
Someone knocked hurriedly at the door. Arstan turned unbidden and opened it, a hand passively resting at the hilt of his sword. One of the stewards waited outside in the cold, scroll in hand. Outside a grim-faced Bolton man waited patiently on a dark horse.
Arstan’s face was a mask as he took the scroll, nodded to the steward, then shut the door and crossed the room.
“Letter for you, Lord Commander,” Arstan murmured. Snow turned, sighed, and accepted the scroll with a pink wax seal. Sansa’s mountain lake-blue eyes lingered on Arstan’s face before turning down to the message.
“I’m not Lord Commander anymore.”
Arstan stepped back to resume his watch near the doorway. Snow broke the seal and looked the letter over silently.
Sansa’s eyes flickered up at Arstan again and returned to Snow. The old knight felt his blood run cold. Snow snatched the message up roughly and bowed his head, breathing deeply.
“To the traitor and bastard Jon Snow. You allowed thousands of wildlings past the Wall. You have betrayed your own kind. You have betrayed the North. Winterfell is mine, bastard.” Snow paused, breathed, and read again. “Come and see. Your brother Rickon is in my dungeon.”
At that Snow started. His eyes lifted to meet his half-sister’s and he continued, “His direwolf’s skin is on my floor. Come and see. I want my bride back.” Snow did not change his tone. “Send her to me, bastard, and I will not trouble you or your wildling lovers. Keep her from me and I will ride north and slaughter every wildling man, woman, and babe living under your protection.”
Tormund grunted and shifted his weight, staring down at Snow to gauge his reaction. “You will watch as I skin them living.” Snow scanned the next line, began to read it, and stopped, staring at his half-sister. Sansa stared back at her half-brother and reached across the table steadily, taking the letter for herself.
She began to read. “You will watch as my soldiers take turns raping your sister. You will watch as my dogs devour your wild little brother. Then I will spoon your eyes from their sockets and let my dogs do the rest. Come and see.
“Ramsay Bolton, Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North.”
The table broke out in discussion. They spoke all at once about the Bolton bastard’s succession, how many fighters the wildlings had, and whether any of the surviving Stark bannermen remembered their oaths. Whether the message even spoke truly.
Sansa’s hand shot across the table and seized Snow’s, pulling him towards her inexorably. Snow froze, eyes wide. Arstan himself was taken aback by the gesture.
Her tone was steely as her eyes pierced into Snow’s. “You’re the son of the last true Warden of the North. Northern families are loyal.” Her knuckles whitened around Snow’s fist. “They’ll fight for you if you ask.” She breathed quickly, licking her lips, and she continued to implore him. “A monster has taken our home and our brother. We have to go back to Winterfell and save them both.”
Snow still sat hunched over the table, eyes the size of dinner plates. He nodded.
Sansa did not let go of his hand as she turned to Tormund. “You’ll help us?”
The big wildling scoffed in response, eyes burning. Ser Davos and Brienne were spoken for. Edd sat on the bench alone, defeated. He had no dog in this fight. The Watch took no part.
Sansa looked up over Snow’s shoulder, eyes searching for Arstan. He frowned, throat dry.
“Will you ride with us, ser?”
Edd jumped and Snow jerked in his seat, eyes questioning.
Sansa surveyed them both in surprise. She hadn’t expected that reaction. “They don’t know?”
Arstan took a moment to respond. His shoulders slumped, and he answered in a low voice, “They don’t, my lady. I left that all behind me.”
“I remember you,” Sansa said slowly, gently, “when you were dismissed.” Her stern face turned to a small frown. “They were awful to you. I’m sorry I said nothing against it.”
It was an ugly memory. He didn’t remember her standing amongst the courtiers before storming out, but the girl spoke truly. “It wasn’t your place to defend me, my lady.”
“I should have still done something. Have you taken your oaths truly?”
Snow’s eyes danced back and forth in thought. Edd interrupted them, “Arstan swore his service to the Night’s Watch, same as me. But not as a knight. You’re anointed?”
“I was shamed,” Arstan answered quietly, “and a wanted fugitive. I didn’t want goldcloaks or knives in the dark bothering the Watch.”
Snow entered the conversation. “Arstan swore to serve the watch. If you’re not Arstan then who are you, truly, ser?”
The old knight thought hard, memory reaching back days and months and across the years. There lay Snow in a drift, ruby-red blood fallen and pooling where he’d found him. Ruby-red blood spattered on his breastplate from dragging Robert away from the dying boar. Loose rubies in the bubbling Red Ford around the ruin of a prince he’d sworn to protect. A white cloak and silver sword thrown down in anguish and fury before the Iron Throne, the same spot where an atrocity in ruby-red cloaks had been offered.
He’d failed before. He wouldn’t fail again. Robert and Rhaegar and the children were gone, there was no saving them. But here was his saving. A knight was nothing without a lord to serve, and any man would have loved to serve Lord Stark. The blood rushed back into his face and he felt hot despite the cold outside. Lord Stark’s children needed a knight to serve them.
He knelt and they stood, Sansa walking around the table and bewildered Edd and Tormund. He bowed his head and spoke confidently, earnestly.
“I am Ser Barristan of House Selmy, formerly of the Kingsguard.” Someone muttered Barristan the Bold in shock and he ignored it. “Dismissed by King Joffrey Baratheon, fugitive of his justice.”
Barristan looked up at the Starklings. Sansa was graceful, eyes dancing. Snow was dark, still processing the revelation. Barristan unsheathed his sword and offered it hilt-first. Snow took it uneasily and Barristan thought of the same trepidation Rhaegar had worn when he’d first sworn his service. He said the same words again.
“Lady Sansa,” he began, then added gently, “Lord Snow, I offer you my service. I will shield your backs and keep your counsel and give my life for yours, if need be. I swear it by the old gods and the new.”
Snow was hesitant and unsure. He’d never been taught the words. Sansa spoke surely, “And I vow that you will always have a place by my hearth and mead at my table.” Her mouth set in a hard, thin line. “And I pledge to ask no service of you that might bring you dishonor. I swear it by the old gods and the new.” She turned to Snow and beckoned him forward. He returned the sword and grasped the knight’s forearm, lifting him to his feet
“Arise, Ser Barristan. We welcome your service.”

What was the age difference between Ser Bonnifer and then-Princess Rhaella? If she was a teenager when she had Rhaegar that would've made her in her 30s when she died and in her 40s or 50s now if she'd lived, right? He didn't seem that old in Jaime's chapters, maybe his 60s, or am I remembering wrong?
Regarding this post by @rhaellas, we don’t know precisely, but we can guesstimate based on available information. Some quotes:
“she was once smitten with a young knight from the stormlands who wore her favor at a tourney and named her queen of love and beauty. A brief thing. […] He put away his lance the day your lady mother wed your father. Afterward he became most pious, and was heard to say that only the Maiden could replace Queen Rhaella in his heart. His passion was impossible, of course. A landed knight is no fit consort for a princess of royal blood.” –Daenerys VII, ADWD
“Rhaella grew up in the court of her grandfather Aegon V. She became infatuated, for a time, with a handsome tourney knight from the stormlands, but it was a passing fancy that came to an end when her father, Jaehaerys, heard a prophecy from a woods witch, brought to court by Jenny of Oldstones, that the prince who was promised would come from his children.” –”Rhaella Targaryen” entry, AWOIAF Official iPad app
Rhaella was born in either 245 or 246, and she and Aerys wed around 258, when Rhaella was about 12 or 13. The official app tells us her infatuation with Bonifer ended before the wedding, at the time Jaehaerys announced the betrothal. We don’t know when this announcement was made, but it had to be sufficiently in advance of the wedding that (at the very least, imo) invitations could be sent out and various nobles could make the journey to the capital.
So this infatuation happened when Rhaella was about 11 or 12, possibly younger depending on when the woods witch gave her prophecy. This was just my impression, but to me, it seemed like the woods witch gave her prophecy before Rhaella had even begun to menstruate, and she was betrothed (like Sansa) at 11, and not long after her first flowering, she and Aerys were wed (again in a situation very like Sansa’s).
Let’s say Rhaella was 11 during this infatuation, in about 251. Were Rhaella alive today in 300AC, she would be about 55 years old.
Bonifer was “a young knight” so he was maybe 16 - 20. Let’s be generous and and say Bonifer was 17 in 251, given his great renown as “a jouster of some note”. (That means he would have had to establish a reputation with the tourney lance, so we need multiple tourneys, which takes time.) If he was 17 in 251, that means he would have been born in 234, which is about two or three years older than Barristan Selmy. (Note that Selmy was also crushing on a young maiden at a tourney in a similar situation. Significant age gaps between gallant knights and fair maidens are common in GRRM’s writing.)
In 300AC, Bonifer is presumably in his late 60s, possibly early 70s. Does this jive with the descriptions we get in the text? Bonifer is described as “old” but it’s implied that he’s younger than the “ancient” Lord Estermont (King Robert’s grandfather), who must be in his 80s at least, possibly older. Jaime thinks of Bonifer as “old” and “withered”. (For comparison, Jaime’s father Tywin is around 58 when he dies, and Jaime never associates the word “old” with Tywin.)
So anyways, I think it’s weird if you have a guy who is the equivalent of a senior in high school crushing on a little girl about the age of a 5th grader. If this infatuation had occurred when they were older, it wouldn’t be a significant age gap, but the way GRRM wrote it, it’s creepy. I get that GRRM was trying to make parallels with Dany and Sansa, but I think GRRM made a mistake when he made Rhaella younger than Aerys.

QUESTION! If you were to categorize Dolores by a major house in Westeros. Where do you see her fitting in more?
I think that depends on Dolores accordingly to timeline, since she changes a lot throughout the show, and her sweet, naive programmed persona greatly diverges from the Dolores that we see in season 2, and that both of those are somewhat different from what Dolores will be in season 3, considering she is now focused in a different sort of battle and seeking to achieve different goals.
This is difficult tbh aishdfiasudh I’m not sure of a definitive reply, both because fitting Dolores in one house is difficult and because the houses themselves have such divergent representatives that it is hard to define them as a unity. So here is my attempt at analyzing it as briefly as I could.
I think future!Dolores will fit in the most as a Lannister. I think even season 2 Dolores may fit in there, but considering how much more cunning and manipulative I expect her to be in season 3, I think future!Dolores will fit as a Lannister even better. The Lannisters aren’t above using others to reach their goals. They certainly aren’t above spilling blood either, and they are rather ambitious. The main point of divergence I see is that Dolores’ goal is never focused on herself alone/those closest to her. She doesn’t want a legacy to herself, her actions are focused on the survival of an entire kind. Even so, I think this may fit in with the Lannisters as well, if we think of Dolores’ mindset in regard to the future of her kind as similar to the Lannister’s mindset of placing their house and their legacy first. In both cases, they work to preserve their kin, even if hers is more encompassing an idea, and much less selfish.
The Tyrells are quite similar to the Lannisters in some of those aspects, though, so she may fit in there as well. And her first build fits in perfectly with the sort of image the Tyrells aim to project, but that isn’t necessarily true. For that reason, I might lean towards Tyrell more.
Like the Martells, Dolores is quite the resilient one, and we all know she can be very dangerous and vengeful. I think she has less qualms in regards to the innocents that may get caught in the crossfire of her war than the Martells, though. There are some similarities, so maybe?
I don’t see much that would lead me to place her as a Stark, Arryn, Targaryen or Tully. I thought her programmed role might be placed as a Tully but I can’t really explain why lol.
I think I’d stay with Tyrell or Lannister, though I’m leaning towards the first one more.

Sansa & Daenerys, a parallel
Basically what the title implies. I’ve been annoyed about all the Sansa hate and biased comparisons to Dany (which usually amount to who is the better victim). SO while pondering it, I started to notice similar plot points between the two and thought I’d share. Read on and find out.
Political Prisoners/Fugitives
One of the more obvious points is how Dany and Sansa have been prisoners and fugitives of the crown. Daenerys had to flee Westeros in order to survive Robert's Rebellion and was under threat of death at any given time. While this was Daenery's origin story, this is Sansa's main arch through the books and show. She is kept as a political prisoner of the Lannisters and had to become a fugitive when accused of murdering Joffrey. Both women would be killed by the crown if given the chance.
2. Abused and Survived
No one could argue that Viserys and Joffrey are misunderstood bundles of joy. Both have exercised physical and mental abuse throughout their time with Dany and Sansa. A key difference is that Dany was able to confront her abuser and played an active role in his downfall. Meanwhile Sansa had no real means to confront Joffrey (aside from sass) about his abuse and played an unknowing passive role in his demise. Also, Viserys and Joffrey had some of the most rewarding deaths in the series.
3. Political Marriages, aka Everybody Wants Their Stuff
Daenerys and Sansa have been some of the most eligible bachelorettes in the series. Both have had numerous connections and would-be suitors after their titles, connections, or dragons. Daenerys was used to secure a Dothraki army (Khal Drogo), barter ships for dragons (Xaro Xhan), and Mareen's stability/crown (Hizdhar zo Larqu). Sansa has mainly been used for her claim to Winterfell and the North but she has connections to the Vale through her maternal side as well.
4. Good first husbands and protectors. (Also another side parallel.)
Its easy to say that their first marriages were the best situation possible for each character. Khal Drogo was protective and loving of Dany throughout their marriage. (Fuck you DD for your reinterpretation of their wedding night, you monsters.) This was probably the first time Dany felt safe and cherished so it allowed her to build out of her abused shell into her own power. He killed Viserys when he tried to take Dany away and promised to take the Dothraki across the sea to take the Iron Throne when he learned of the assassination attempt.
Tyrion Lannister has been protecting Sansa Stark since he arrived in King's Landing. He even bitch slapped Joffrey when he caught the boy using his guards to strip and humiliate Sansa. While a notable playboy, Tyrion vowed not to touch Sansa until she wanted him and did what he could to treat her well. This would have been a good match had things not gone sideways such as the Red Wedding and Joffrey being killed. It's enough that Sansa remembers as Tyrion being kind to her and defended him against people who misspoke of him (ex: Aunt Lysa).
It seems both women's characters are also close to their first husbands characters as well. Where Dany has adopted the role of conqueror like Khal Drogo would be proud of and Sansa has started to develop into a sensible political figure like Tyrion was as hand of the king. Just interested side parallel.
5. Rise in personal power.
Keeping in mind that Dany's storyline and archs are several steps ahead of Sansa's, her rise to personal power correlates with Sansa's fall. Dany becomes a formidible general, a beloved breaker of chains, and the all mother to the slave class. She proves time and time again how clever she is in her battle decisions, how underestimating her is a death wish, and her devotion to the less fortunate. People would kill and die for Dany. Her personal power is the most obvious growth and display.
( Nothing says personal power like crowd surfing in a mob that’s grateful to you)
Sansa's is quieter and again, a few steps behind Dany. Her ability to coerce people and her political savvy is starting to become more noticiable as season 7 goes on. In season 6, she uses her lineage to round up the Northern Lords to fight for Jon and uses the Vale Knights to come to Jon's aid at a crucial moment in battle. In season 7, we see her advising Jon on politics and so far seems to be using everyone around her to bolster Winterfell as a safe haven against invaders. More evidence will become available as the seasons go on but we are starting to see Sansa's rise in power.
6. The Turning of Public Opinion
Both women have had to deal with mob mentality at some point in the show which left them rattled and disillusioned about 'the people'. For Dany, it was the abandonment of the Dothraki after Khal Drogo died and her entire arch in Maereen. Invading and killing the Maereen nobles led to the Sons of the Harpy. Executing White Rat turned the 'mesa' worshipping slaves into an angry riot that through the city into chaos. I'm not entirely convinced that Dany was able to recover that ground with her people.
(Could not find a good gif of the slaves turning on Mareen so here’s Dany fleeing)
When Sansa was engaged to Joffrey, the public was generally happy until Ned Stark was accused as a traitor. She quickly went from a beloved Northern daughter to a traitor by extension and used as a pawn. There was also the Kings Landing riot where she was seperated from the King's party and had to be rescued by the Hound before she was attacked. She watched as the public turned on the Lannisters before turning back once Joffrey was engaged to Margery and there was some stability because people were being fed.
7. Creepy mentors who love and betray them
Jorah “Friendzone” Mormont was actively spying on Daenerys for Varys and King Robert in the beginning. While living beside her and watching her, Jorah eventually came to love Dany and switched teams. He even actively pursued her before being turned down and acted as guide/mentor/friend/father-figure for her throughout his time with her. So when she learned of his betrayal, Dany was heartbroken and banished him from her side. He kinda-sorta makes up for it in the show by bringing her Tyrion and chasing after her when she's recaptured by the Dothraki but hasn't been forgiven fully.
Petyr “Creepshow” Baelish has been creeping on Sansa both in the show and the books. While he initially seemed to use her as a pawn or a Catlyn keepsake, he's also spent enough time where he could have fallen in love with her behind the scenes. (Although I do believe he's projecting his feelings for Cat and his grand scheme of the Iron Throne onto Sansa.) He's the main instigator for Ned's death and (in the show) married her off to Ramsey Bolton, nee Snow. Because of his multiple claims to care for her and to trust him, Sansa felt betrayed that Petyr would leave her in the hands of Ramsey, whether he was aware or not. Despite her desire to separate from him, Sansa ended up using Petyr and his connections to secure a win in the BoB. Not completely redeemable since it aligns with his plans and Sansa doesn't seem eager to forgive him any time soon.
8. Back to the Start and Turning it on it's Head.
The show's storyline ultimately brings both Sansa and Daenerys back to where they were last truly happy. For Daenerys, it was at the Khal's great city where her baby was proclaimed He Who Mounts The World and bringing her back full circle to the Dothraki. Except now the Khals are deciding what to do with her since she refused to do her duty as a Khal Widow and return to live as a priestess passing out horse hearts. Now that she's come to power, Dany is less than amused at being brought low again so she sets all the Khals on fire and she gains the whole Dothraki horde.
For Sansa, she's back in Winterfell and everything seems tense-but-fine until Ramsey shows his true colors to her. Again, Sansa has to endure a sadist's attention but this time she looks for a few ways out. Ultimately she escapes with Theon in tow and into Jon's arms. There she uses her newfound personal power to inspire Jon to take back Winterfell, round up the Lords, and use the Vale Knights to win the BoB. Now that she's come into her own power, Sansa is able to face her abuser and actively orchestrate his execution (or at least it's assumed between one scene and another).
9. Everybody underestimates you.
Daenerys is a silly little princess who can't possibly know multiple languages and should let the men around her take over. HA!
Sansa Stark is often considered a stupid girl who doesn't know anything about anything and has nothing valuable to offer. HA!
10. The Quest for Home
Although for Dany it's easy to argue her quest for the Iron Throne is a quest for power and authority, it's also the quest for home. She grew up being told Westeros was her home. Storms End was her home. Kings Landing was home. The Iron Throne and the regency is home. Her goal is to come home and reestablish the Targaryan regency. It's what she grew up hearing from Viserys.
Sansa Stark has wanted to go home since Season 1. This is the one time where Dany's and Sansa's timelines do not match because Sansa came home before Dany did (season 6 and 7 respectively). Ultimately she isn't fully done with this quest as she has to deal with her trauma, the coming threats, and the Baelish problem. There's no security at Winterfell yet but we will probably see that build as the seasons go.
Honestly if you read through that, awesome. Took me waaaaayy too long to type it out and get gifs for it. Hate it, love it, I’m glad you read it. All I’m trying to say as there are a lot of commonalities between two characters in terms of story. The only real reason why people hate on Sansa when she went through the same trials as Dany is because we were with her through her suffering just as we went through Dany’s uprising from a similar place. We experienced her suffering simultaneously with Dany’s rise and that it’s easier to see the difference between a current victim and a vengeful one. I hope this shows how similar they are.

Finally! 9 New TV Shows Starring White Men

Finally! 9 New TV Shows Starring White Men
If one thing has become abhorrently clear to me since 2016, it’s that we need to start talking about white men. This hole-and-corner subculture is captivating and complex; today these men face endless roadblocks, like having decent-paying jobs or boring their wives. Because of this, the heroes of Hollywood have been tasked with the onerous responsibility of keeping white men relevant. Luckily networks keep finding new and inventive ways to dissect this niche culture. The people have spoken, and it’s time to start a dialogue on America’s best-kept secret: men. Here, the best opportunities we’ll have to watch them on TV this fall and beyond.
youtube
The Orville
Finally, a sci-fi show…for him! In this hot new take on science fiction, Seth Macfarlane stars as Planetary Union officer Ed Mercer, a down-on-his-luck recent divorcé who’s given a once in a lifetime opportunity to command his own ship. But Ed has one earth-shattering problem: His first officer is his ex-wife. I find Ed’s character to be multidimensional and intriguing: In the trailer, a female cohort with superstrength knocks down a wall, leaving Ed to exclaim, “I loosened it for you.” He also asks an alien from an all-male planet if his species argues about leaving the toilet seat up. I’m not sure what the pay gap is like on the final frontier, but based on my research (his admiral is played by Victor Garber), leadership positions for men are ample. However, it seems their jobs may be threatened by illegal aliens—actual aliens.
youtube
Alex Inc.
Alex Inc. tells the story of some Mesozoic creature called a “successful radio journalist.” Alex decides to throw away his burgeoning radio career for a stab at—wait for it—podcasting. Is there anything that screams “privileged straight white male” like “I have a podcast”? Starring Zach Braff, the series is inspired by StartUp, a podcast about getting a business off the ground. And this show is dripping with privilege; Alex irresponsibly decides to stop making money and ruin the lives of his wife and kids in exchange for a passion project. Last year Los Angeles declared a state of emergency over homelessness, institutionalized racism is still running rampant, and America is being ruled by Cersei Lannister Meets the Kraken—but yes, I’d say we need this show, now more than ever.
youtube
Me, Myself & I
This show chronicles three timelines in the life of some guy named Alex Riley. SNL alum Bobby Moynihan stars as the 40-year-old Alex, who catches his wife cheating. There’s also a 65-year-old Alex (John Larroquette) and a 14-year-old Alex (Jack Dylan Grazer), who is an only child growing up in Chicago. Young Alex was obsessed with the Chicago Bulls, until his single mother married a Los Angeles native and he was forced under the oppressive regime of yellow-haired Lakers fans. Me, Myself & I is cool because sometimes I see a show about a boring guy and I’m like, “Wow, I wish I could see two more versions of the same man.” Come for the unique plot line of “suburban wife cheats on lame husband,” stay for the moment when Moynihan offends Asian businessmen with some mild racism.
youtube
SEAL Team
David Boreanaz stars as Navy SEAL Jason Hayes and…
…
…sorry, fell asleep for a minute. Look, they’re just going to keep finding things for David Boreanaz to do on TV. Vampire? Sure. Navy SEAL? Why not! I mean, the man has played a forensic anthropologist, for God’s sake.
youtube
Wisdom of the Crowd
Jeremy Piven plays Jeffrey Tanner, a tech juggernaut whose teenage daughter was murdered in a cold case. He creates a crowdsourcing app that allows users to submit tips about his daughter’s disappearance and other crimes. Do you see the toll white privilege takes on men? First they’re subjugated to Ivy League schools. Then they’re afforded elite opportunities. Finally they must abandon said opportunities to pursue being a billionaire, only to be sentenced to probably becoming president of the United States. Ultimately, Wisdom of the Crowd is an escapist TV show that asks us to take a break from our bifurcated country to watch men abuse their power.
youtube
9JKL
Mark Feuerstein plays a guy named, appropriately, Josh. Josh, who’s divorced and “down on his luck,” moves into the apartment next to his parents and struggles with things like getting laid and being loved by his parents—something every modern American can relate to!
youtube
A.P. Bio
From Seth Meyers, Lorne Michaels, and Mike O’Brien, a.k.a. The White Dudes of SNL, comes a show about, I kid you not, a dude who’s “down on his luck.” The show stars Glenn Howerton (It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia) as a philosophy scholar who gets a job as a high school Advanced Placement biology teacher after missing out on his dream job. The show’s announcement on Deadline reads, “Realizing he has a room full of honor roll students at his disposal, he decides instead to use the kids to his own benefit.” Sorry, what? Can these guys stop “deciding to use” guileless, unblemished minors for some bleak scheme to distract them from their joyless lives?
youtube
Kevin (Probably) Saves the World
It can be hard to tell white men apart, so let me clear up some confusion right off the bat: No, this isn’t the same show as Kevin Can Wait. But it is another network television show about a dude named Kevin. A messenger from God (played by Cristela Alonzo) descends to earth to teach Kevin (Jason Ritter) some life lessons. She hits on all the classics, like “don’t care about material things,” “be nice to your niece,” and “show up to your brother’s funeral, you garbage monster.” Finally, a show about a white man finding God!
PHOTO: Mike Coppola
By the Book
If you’re still parched after watching Kevin (Probably) Saves the World, look out for By the Book on CBS. The network has ordered a full season of the show, but a premiere date has yet to be announced. Based on the book Living Biblically and executive produced by Big Bang Theory’s Johnny Galecki, By the Book is about, you guessed it, a white man finding God.
