TELL ME ALL ABOUT THE WORSE BOOKS YOU HAD READ!

Did you… just… awaken my deepest rage?

(forgive me for being a bit ooc, but I simply must for things like this)

A LIST OF TERRIBLE BOOKS I READ:

Handbook for Mortals by Lani Sarem was one of the first bad books I wanted to read so long ago simply because it was the number one thing people in the book community were talking about. It got taken off the Bestsellers list within 24 hours because the company behind the book was buying bulk copies to make it number one. The writing is cheesy, and there are too many characters you will not care about, plus the protagonist is unrelatable and annoying.

All of the Onision books. Well, specifically, I heard someone read them since I did not want to actually own those dreaded books. I cannot fathom how these three books of his clearly reflect the twisted author. They all boil down to being about a male character believing the world is out to get them when, in actuality, it is just the author’s strange power fantasy ranging from beating up and/or killing characters who wronged him to having sex with women because it is a man’s human nature to breed? It’s all very strange and it’s only scratching the surface.

The “poetry books” of Gabbie Hanna. Critiques of the author aside, her poetry is essentially the equivalent of what I would have written at the age of 12. I bought used versions of the books because my brother and I wanted to read, laugh, and cry at just how unfinished and empty the poetry is. I remade two of them, and maybe someday I want to recreate all of them as a little writing challenge, hehe. Not to say these books were bad, but they were such wasted potential of what could have been.

Lastly, The Disappearance of Hatsune Miku, a light novel adaptation of an iconic Hatsune Miku song…

I CANNOT FATHOM THE DISAPPOINTMENT AND BITTER HATRED I HAVE WITH HIS BOOK! This needs to be a separate post because THIS BOOK is why look at reviews before buying them now. Long story short, it is a strange “love story” with unlikable and boring characters and a very broken plot, and the only one you will care for is Miku, who doesn't deserve to be in this story.

I even made annotations on it. I only do that with books I need to write an essay on…

Honorable mention:

After by Anna Todd. I read the original version of it soooooo long ago and was uninterested in reading the rest of it. Finding out it became and actually published work shocks me because somehow, I heard it was a lot worse than I thought. I refuse to read the rest of it to this day.

Precious, hilarious and ferocious.

SCALE: While I could technically get behind her, I’ll have her get behind me in order to spare her trauma.

Misty Quigley (Yellowjackets)

She has never done anything wrong in her entire life (she has committed multiple murders and was a horrible person even before the plane crashed). But it’s fine, we love her anyways.

9. Peter Gordon (The Power Of The Dog)

The second that Tumblr discovers this movie (highly recommend by the way) it’s all over. I need people to join me in understanding the power of Peter Gordon.

8. Laura Palmer (Twin Peaks)

Absolutely tragic, could have been saved by listening to Preacher’s Daughter, has the best theme. Of course I love her.

Fictional husband. Absolute king. Get this man a cup of coffee immediately.

SCALE: He’s an FBI agent, so I should probably get behind him.

6. Armond (The White Lotus)

An icon, a legend, and the moment. No one is doing it like him, and no one will ever do it like him again.

SCALE: Honestly we’re probably on the same level. We’ll fight Shane together.

5. Mrs. Lovett (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street)

Served (both literally and figuratively) at unprecedented levels. Absolutely horrendous in the most amazing way. I am a stan forever.

SCALE: Probably getting behind her.

4. India Stoker (Stoker)

She has the best fashion sense and was always true to herself (even if true to herself meant…well, the movie). Love her.

SCALE: I’m getting behind her.

3. Laura Lee (Yellowjackets)

The human embodiment of Sun Bleached Flies. Sweet sweet girl, was not built to survive Yellowjackets and deserved better.

SCALE: GET BEHIND ME. DON’T GO ON THE PLANE.

2. Alicent Hightower (House of the Dragon)

Come season 2, everyone has their (genuinely awful) character that they will be defending to the death. She is mine. Do not come to me with Alicent slander; I will justify it.

Helaena Targaryen

Who else? Love absolutely everything about her. I’m dreading Season 2, but in my mind she’s away from King’s Landing, happy and safe with her babies. She is The Character.

Poor Ryan, exiled to watching them upstairs while the other three go down. Ryan really is the new guy, they said they would stop after remaking the pilot. (has his gun out already) Plus, he's been there two years more than castle, they had their ten year anniversary at the end of s7. Timeline facts: for 14 months before joining homicide, ryan was undercover. Ike was "dead" for three years in season two & when Ike died that's when esposito transferred to homicide. Rysposito worked their first case together ten years before the s7 finale.

Re: 2021 My Immortal Podcast

As I finalize a script for my podcast miniseries covering everyone’s favorite fanfic, I wanted to check in with the good folks of Tumblr to ask for your input regarding what you want to know more about, or what really interests you in discussions of My Immortal that are often brushed over.

For instance, as a PhD student in literature, I’m really excited to work on a literary analysis of how the fan fiction and the metafiction of the author’s notes interact with one another. Are there other elements or details of the story that you think are important, or that you feel are often left out of the conversation?

Thanks for your help & please share if you can! I’m excited about this project but if I don’t check in on the things I might miss I fear it will become a terribly self-serving masturbatory exercise rather than something to share with a community. xx
