Light Consorting with Shadows
Chapter 9: Love in the midst of Doom
[previous]
All around them was chaotic. Objects were flung at everyone from different directions, and red spears followed suit. Finally, from the corner of the enemy's eye... Lancelot charged towards him, pinning him down to the floor. His helmet was damaged, and his face bled from all the debris flung at him. "This... ends here." He snarled. Instead of wielding his sword, he too wielded a glowing red spear. Instead of seeing fear in the foe's eyes, there was amusement in them. He started to cackle. He reached out to Shadow, grasping his head. Immediately, he felt a piercing sharp pain, he hollered out but felt frozen in time so he felt helpless.
"... We will end this. My son." The knight reached for his enemy's wrist, trying to pull his hold on him. "You... will take me to the Chaos Emeralds. You and I can rule..." The voice continued to ring through his head. Shadow finally was able to shove him away. When he came to his senses, he had never had someone communicate through his thoughts. This was a feeling that he would never like to experience ever again. He held his head in pain, and scanned the room to realize that all of his loved ones were paralyzed.
"Who the hell are you?! And I suggest you free them... now!" Shadow hissed, quills bristling in rage. The knight grabbed at the collar of his dark cloak, just inches from his masked face.
"Tch. Everyone calls me... Doom."
Well, that suited this guy perfectly. After Shadow released his grip on Doom's cloak, and reacted by punching him across the jaw. This caused his mask to shatter from the impact. Now that he was exposed... Shadow could now see his resemblance with him. He too was a black hedgehog, with a red striped pattern along his quills. The only thing different was the scars all over face, but other than that... their resemblance were uncanny. This made him sick. He didn't know his father was still alive. Growing up, he had always seen Gerald as his father. Instead, it was this dark being that stood sneering at him. Clearly, he was amused by how Shadow uneasy was.
"Shadow...? What's going on? I can't move..." Although, Aurora may have been paralyzed like the rest of them, she tried to speak. Honestly, she wasn't sure whether he had heard her.. until she saw his ear twitch in her direction.
"She won't intervene. Retrieve the Chaos Emeralds... now." A hand reached out to Shadow's chest plate. It started glowing a bright white. Shadow snarled in pain. This Doom character was forcing him to perform Chaos Control! Doom knew that he could Chaos Control them to the exact room where the Chaos Emeralds were held, because the knight could picture the scene... unlike Doom.
Reappearing underneath the palace, where the Chaos Emeralds were expected to be hidden... in a locked chest in the middle of the room. Although he felt unstable he managed to charge towards Doom, knocking him down to the floor. "It's not gonna be that easy."
"How dare you! We can rule together! Wouldn't that be great?!" Doom hurled a spear in Shadow's direction, he barely missed it. "You can have that... princess that you care so much about. If that's what you wished-" Doom was hit with a spin-dash, and crashed into the wall.
"I would never rule beside a murderer." Doom saw Shadow form a spear in his right hand.
"... What a pity." Doom spat to the ground. The pair charged at one another. They hurled chaos spears at one another, trying to get the upper hand on the other. This continued for what seemed like eternity, until Doom retrieved Shadow's sword from his sheath...he was quick to realize this, and fought hard to knock it out of his grasp. Unfortunately, Doom forced his weight on Shadow, pinning him against the other wall and pierced his leg with the weapon, just above his knee. Slowly, he fell to his knees. Bleeding out all over the stone floor. Doom tossed the sword aside. "You're a great fighter, son. Yet, you're wasting it on being a servant."
Whenever Shadow tried to get up, pain shot throughout his body, forcing him back to his knees. His vision starting to grow impaired. At this point, he started to drag himself closer on the floor. Slowly, inching closer to his foe. He saw Doom break open the chest. "No...!" Shadow managed to get up and grasp for Doom's cloak. He was quick to respond, and whirled around, swinging a fist... knocking Shadow back. Before passing out, he saw Doom lift a red Chaos Emerald.. then he was gone with all 7 of the powerful gems. The knight could only breathe out a curse.
--
Aurora was the first one to rush to the knight's side. Sonic, and a few other knights appeared next. They were quick to take note that the chaos emeralds were taken, but they were more concerned for their head knight. He had a faint pulse, so they needed to act quickly. They'll figure out what to do about missing chaos emeralds later. Gawain, and Sonic both carried him out of the room. They laid him on Shadow's bed, the doctor was quick to arrive with a case of medical supplies. Everyone was forced to leave the room, so he could attend to Shadow's wound. Three mice characters that served as his nurses, came in with some freshly grinded herbs, while another had removed Shadow's bedding that was soaked with blood. It was hours before the doctor allowed any quests in the room, while Aurora lingered close to his room, the others continued on with their day.
They had to plan for the worst. This Doom character was not good news, and now he had all the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic wanted to start thinking about getting everyone in Camelot evacuate to the bunker just a mile or two past the city walls. The bunker was hidden underneath a tower, and behind a stone wall. Archers were assigned to patrol the perimeter. Sonic didn't want to cause his people to fear. But, he had a feeling that Doom would return. He wasn't gonna risk someone's life if he could prevent it. The knights started to spread the word, and started helping the citizens gather supplies to take with them.
Hours passed by and throughout the commotion outside of the palace, Aurora had fallen asleep outside Shadow's door. She was startled awake when Maria crouched down to her level, touching her shoulder. She watched her sit beside her, and hand her some a canteen filled with water, and some food wrapped up securely. Aurora only smiled at her, and taking the food and water that she brought. "Is dad evacuating everyone?" She watched her nod. Aurora took a bite of the meat on a stick, "we should have never brought him to Camelot. I had a bad feeling ever since..."
Maria pulled her blonde-hair back, tying it up in a bun. "There's nothing you could have done, dear. He would have... found Camelot, either way." Aurora gave a defeated sigh. "Hey, he's tough. I'm sure he'll be alright." The human beside her felt like she wasn't just trying to reassure the royal hedgehog, but also trying to reassure herself. The pair continued to sit in the hallway, as the sun started to set, and the world around them growing darker by the hour. The girls were starting to doze off, their backs against the cold wall. Finally, the doctor emerged outside of the room, the pair stood to their feet. He bowed in Aurora's direction.
"He's stable now, princess." He cleared his throat, "get some rest. You two can see him later."
The next morning...
The knight woke up at the crack of dawn, he groaned in pain when he moved ever so slightly. Oh, so it wasn't a dream. He quietly confirmed, noticing the bandage tightly wrapped around his wounded leg. As the sunlight pierced through the small window of his room, he shielded his eyes. Everything hurt. Quite frankly, he could even still feel Doom in his head. He felt his heart pounding in his chest, and his breathing became labored. The memory still fresh. Then, he heard a familiar soft and soothing voice, then a cold cloth was brought to his face, wiping the sweat off his brow. In hesitation, he peeked. His vision struggling to focus. Slowly, he could make out Aurora's figure. She was seated at the edge of his bed, one hand resting ontop of his hand, and the other holding the cloth against his head. His breathing started to return to normal seeing that Aurora was indeed... safe. Slowly, he started sitting up against the headboard, then pulled her into an embrace. "I failed... the Chaos Emeralds are gone, Aurora."
Her cheek brushed against his as they embraced, "don't start that. You almost died protecting everyone..."
How did she always know what to say to him? Something about her confidence in him made him feel like he could conquer anything. Guess it was true that love would make you do crazy things. The two ended the embrace. Aurora started to get up from his bedside, Shadow didn't want to wait another moment, and pulled her into a kiss. This time far more passion than the last.
The pair didn't want this moment to end, but a gasp heard from across the room interrupted them. Maria had just stepped in while they were kissing, Sonic was just behind her. Maria frantically slammed the door on the King. "Lancelot's not decent, sire! Give him a second..." Aurora stifled a laugh, while the knight hid his face in his hands. Embarrassment wasn't even close to what he felt right now. Aurora was now hidden, her powers once more coming in handy for her sake. Maria gave a sigh, and opened the door for the king after picking up the tray that had Shadow's food on it, "Sorry about that, sire. Lancelot didn't really warn me either." She rolled her eyes. "Then again... I'm use to seeing him...naked." Sonic seemed to be amused by her little fib, and stepped inside the knight's bedroom.
"Maria." Shadow said sternly.
While Sonic and Shadow talked, Aurora peeked in the room, before joining her father. The knight raised a brow at her, and then gave Sonic his full attention. "I hate I let him get away... I really messed up, sire and I apologize."
"Hey, at least you could move. That... was a strange feeling." Sonic visibly shuddered at the thought. Sonic continued on explaining what they were preparing for in case Doom had returned. "Perhaps, you should stay with the citizens taking shelter, Lancelot. You got a serious injury there. I wouldn't-"
The knight shook his head in denial. He had a duty as a knight. Even if he were to die, he would at least be doing it for Camelot and the royal family. Sonic confirmed to the knight that he would still be able to continue his duties, but Sonic didn't want him on the frontlines of the battle.. if it came to that point. Sure, he was considered the best fighter in Camelot, but Sonic still had confidence in the rest of the knights as well. Shadow didn't argue with him, anymore. Perhaps, he should take his advice with his current condition.
--
For the next following days, Shadow was still confined to his room. By the end of the week, Shadow was able to put more weight on his bad leg. He was eager to get out of his stuffy room. However, sometimes his stiff muscles wouldn't let him get very far. The doctor advised to take it slow, fearing that he would open the stitches. Day by day, Shadow kept trying to walk around the room. Some days he could only manage to walk to his desk in the corner, while on his good days, he managed to make it to the door. He hated how just limping to the door tired him out so easily. Aurora came to find him outside his room, his back against the wall. He looked exhausted, despite that he asked if she would help him walk down the hallway, and back. Part of the way, he felt like his leg was cramping on him. His knees buckled; Aurora was quicker and to his surprise Aurora picked him up.
"No. Absolutely not! Put me down. This is embarrassing." He dragged his bad leg, while he hugged the wall. Inching closer and closer to his room. Aurora was trying so hard to stifle a laugh. It felt like it took ages to reach his room, but once they did, Shadow collapsed on his bed. "I'm done with walking for now. Goodnight."
Everyday from then on, Aurora would walk with him down the hallway. Each day, he grew stronger and started even walking without limping. His stitching was removed a couple weeks ago, and the wound was healing up quite nicely. During some of their walks, they'd sneak behind a stone pillar to share a kiss. Something about sneaking around like this... was fun. However, their fun was cut short when they had just finished a walk around the palace. Shadow was the first one to initiate the kiss, and pulled Aurora aside. Amy had witnessed the romantic moment between them. They were completely oblivious to her presence until she cleared her throat.
Aurora jumped out of Shadow's embrace. Her fur glowing, startled that they were actually caught in action... and still feeling like she was on cloud nine after sharing another kiss with her favorite hedgehog. "Oh! Hi mom!" Her smile appeared sheepish, as if she was a child caught again sneaking into the kitchen for a late snack.
"Good evening, Lancelot." Amy smiled warmly. Pretending as if nothing was going on. "I hear you're healing up quite well." The dark hedgehog, did his best to hide his blushing face to no avail, and he acknowledged her comment with a nod. "Wonderful. Now, could I borrow my daughter for a moment?" She gently gave her daughter's arm a squeeze. Shadow nodded awkwardly, and continued on towards his room. If Amy tells Sonic... he could be exiled for overstepping his boundaries. He wondered if expressing his feelings was a mistake after all. But, chaos almighty.. he was falling hard for her.
The royal hedgehogs reached Aurora's room, her and Amy sit on the edge of her bed. "You're gonna have to be careful, Rory." She gave a sigh. "I know you like him, but.. your dad could force him out if he wished."
Like was an understatement, "If he does... I'll leave with him." This kind of shocked her mother, but should she be? In her younger days, she was determined to win Sonic's heart. Sure, the situation was quite different. They were both royalty. Amy was almost forced to marry someone else, refusing to do so, she left her home. She came across Camelot, and lived like a normal citizen. No labels attached to her name.
Her jade eyes softened, "you're in love, aren't you?" Amy got to her feet. "No more sneaking around, you hear me? Not until after I speak to your father." The two embraced, and she made her way to the door. "Does Lancelot know how you feel?"
This conversation was going a lot better than Aurora had expected. But, was she really gonna tell her father that his head knight has been sneaking kisses from her? Oh Chaos help her. "You can call him... Shadow, he doesn't mind. He's just not use to it around you guys." Aurora shrugged, "I haven't exactly told him.."
--
The next morning, they were woken up with a heavy downpour of rain, and storms stirring far off in the distance. The royal family were just finishing up their first meal of the day, both Amy and Aurora were strangely quiet throughout the meal. Sonic studied Amy, wondering if perhaps he had done something stupid to upset her? He couldn't read her and it frustrated him. Once the servants cleaned up the table, Shadow came into the room. Apologizing if he interrupted anything. "Sire? Could I speak with you a moment?" Aurora and her mother glanced at one another, before leaving the room to give them privacy.
Both hedgehogs stood near the biggest window in the room, watching the rain and streaks of lightning pierce the sky. "I bet your ready to get back on your patrol duties." Sonic spoke up first, as usual. "If you're ready to go on patrol in the morning, go ahead. As long as you think you can handle-"
"Yes. However, " Shadow swallowed the lump in his throat, trying to get the courage to speak. "I'm not here to speak to you about that, sire." He hesitated, waiting to see if Sonic was gonna say another word. Instead, the King waited for the dark hedgehog; brows raised. "I... must confess that I'm in love with your daughter." He confessed.
Sonic just stared at him with a blank expression. The silence between them was almost daunting. What did Shadow expect? Aurora's father to give him his blessing right away? No, of course not. Shadow studied his king, trying to get a read on him. He saw him tapping his foot. A familiar body language from Sonic that either meant he was growing impatient, or annoyed... perhaps? Sonic walked off, and took a seat at his desk, fiddling with some scrolls on his desk. "... Y'know how about you take over for Gawain's shift today? He's patrolling the east side of the border." Sonic never once met Shadow's gaze. He's been picking up extra hours since you've been absent." The knight gave a nod, and left him alone to his thoughts. Sonic sat at his desk tapping his fingers against the wood, and then unrolled a scroll. Scanning over what was written. He quickly pushed it aside, and started to pace the room for several minutes.
When he finally emerged from the room, he found Gawain heading in his direction, seeking guidance in what he wants him to do. With the threat of Doom showing his ugly head any day... he knew Sonic wanted more security, so he was shocked that Lancelot had took his spot. "Just stand over there. Yeah. There." He pointed to the stone pillar to the left of them. Gawain just furrowed his eyes.
"I was thinking I'd patrol south of the border..."
"Sire?" Sonic was startled from behind as a twin-tailed fox approached him.
"Oh Chaos almighty, don't do that, Miles." He waved off Gawain, dismissing him. Gawain growled under his breath, and stomped off.
"...Sorry. I just wanted to let you know that your sword is ready. I also went ahead and made a new set of armor for you." Sonic nodded, but said nothing and continued to walk back to his study area. "Is there anymore adjustments you want me to make-" Tails was handed a scroll. "Uh... what you want me to do with this, sire?"
"Read it for me, and then sign it. Please."
"Sire, I... that's not my job."
"Miles." The young fox opened the scroll, and started reading over it out loud. Sonic halfheartedly listened to him, then handed him the ink pen. For the next several minutes, Miles read over the scrolls given to him and per request, signs them when Sonic gives an approving nod. After he finished, Sonic scrolled through some old books. "If you don't need anything else..." Sonic held up an index finger.
"Help me look for a book that tells me how to deal with a knight who is in love your daughter."
"Uhh... I don't think such book exists, sire." Miles was just stating a fact.
"Aha. I wonder why?"
"Wouldn't be forbidden, dare I say?" Sonic snapped his fingers. He slapped his forehead, and paced. "But, how could I exile one of the most loyal knights... "
Miles wondered over when Sonic finally stopped pacing the room. "Quite honestly, I can't imagine you exiling Lancelot, am I correct?" Sonic ran his hands through his quills, looking frail before the young fox.
"Why is it so wrong for him to... be fond of Princess Aurora?"
That was a great question, Miles. Quite frankly, Sonic didn't care what others may think of who Aurora may marry in the future. Even if it is frowned upon. This was his kingdom. But, the thought of giving Shadow his blessing... in marriage? It couldn't be time yet. Right? He only said he loved her. That was all. The thought of exiling him was out of question too. He had the power to do so, but how would Aurora react? He would not want to risk losing her. Unfortunately, he didn't really have time to ponder this situation. Sonic suddenly froze. He felt the energy from the Chaos Emeralds getting stronger and stronger. "He's back... Miles. I'm gonna need that armor..."

Light Consorting with Shadows
Chapter 5: Rescue
By daybreak, Aurora woke up alone in her current living quarters. Quickly, the princess jumped off of her not-so-comfortable bed. Despite the dizziness that she felt, she managed to leave her room to find Lancelot; hoping he didn't abandon her to find her parents without her. It wasn't long before she found him among a crowd of strange men dressed in heavy armor just like him. His ear twitched, hearing her approaching them. Lancelot stepped aside, meeting her halfway down the corridor of the palace. "Princess." His gaze searching her.
"Did you really think I was gonna stay behind, Lancelot?" She saw the Knight shift his weight uncomfortably.
"Yes." He answered very cautiously. "The only thing we can do is hopefully pick up their trail. They have some dogs that-"
"I'm coming with." The princess stood her ground, their gazes locked. Aurora wasn't gonna be cooped up in some stranger's land. She started to walk pass the Knight, not waiting for his reaction. She heard him sigh, and follow her.
"My job is to protect you, and your family. You're already hurt from the other night, I advise that you stay behind." His voice was stern, but she could hear the concern in his tone.
Aurora turned to face him, "Lancelot! Please...! My parents could have been killed," she choked on those words. "Dad didn't raise me to be a coward. And you trained me to handle my own in a battle." Their conversation caused the other men to glance over at the commotion that echoed in the corridor. "Grab me some armor, will ya'?" Lancelot studied her in silence, however, to the princess' surprise he left her behind to retrieve some armor in another room. With his help, she was able to get it fitted properly.
One of the taller men, who appeared to be a black-tailed deer with short antlers poking through his helmet was the first to approach the pair. He glanced at Lancelot in question, "are you insane?" He pulled his helmet off. "I'm not sure how your King runs things. But, royalty never accompany us." He scoffed. "Perhaps, your lack of protection and carelessness was what got your King and Queen kidnapped in the first place." The deer character looked at the other men, and nodded. "With all due respect-"
"Excuse me?!" Aurora bristled, seconds later she was inches away from the deer. "He would die for my family and I!" She jabbed a finger in his chest plate. "We don't have to accompany you, either! My Knight here and I can go by ourselves!" Aurora felt Lancelot's hand going to her shoulder, trying to draw her away from him. The leader stepped back, and composed himself. Aurora was still royalty and he had to respect that. He gave her a humble bow, then pulled his helmet back over his head.
He cleared his throat, "We will have several men near the camp location you had mentioned in case we run into trouble. Their scents should still be fresh, I hope. I will send only 4 of us and a couple of dogs to search."
"Erhan, once we find a trail..."
The deer gave a sharp nod, "I will give you a signal. Lancelot and I can take the lead. Princess, for your protection you will take up the rear. I will have some of my men watching your back. We don't know what to do expect." Everyone gathered around the gate, some mounted on horses, while others kept the dogs at bay until they were ready to depart. "It could be a gang of thieves. Lancelot, do you recall their appearances?" The knight shook his head.
"They were masked up. I just know there were over 10 members.." Lancelot addressed, trying his best to reflect back to that night. He didn't remember much other than fighting hard, only to be knocked out quickly.
Erhan nodded, but said nothing more. He gestured that they follow and the group went down a steep set of stairs and made a haste into the forest. Two men came alongside the princess, while Erhan and Lancelot took the lead while the men with the huge dogs followed closely.
It was a good travel to find their previous campsite. There were remains of some random items left behind, empty tents, cookware, some clothing, canteens of water, a good supply of food. When Erhan searched the wagon, it appeared that someone had rummaged through whatever belongings that was behind inside. Two men gave the dogs something that belonged to the King and Queen and then they paired off to the left, sniffing around the campsite. Aurora was behind everyone, surveying her surroundings for any sort of clue. Lancelot held tightly to his weapon, and walked around the camp, searching high and low. There was a bark from one of the bulkier dogs, he started going further out of the campsite. Everyone followed the lead of the two animals. They were able to pick up some visible footprints, and hoofprints leading in the opposite direction.
---
Miles away, King Sonic was trying to pry the cell open at the keyhole. Amy was in a separate cell beside him. “Almost got it…” he said in a hushed tone. Trying his best not to make too much noise, and draw the guards towards them. During the night, Sonic was able to distract one of the guards and retrieve the key. Once their attention was on something else, Sonic started working at the keyhole. Unfortunately, their escape wasn’t going to be that easy. One of the men that ambushed their camp, and took them away… he came stomping down the hall towards their cells. Sonic quickly moved in the back of his dark cell, hiding the key behind him.
The masked individual shout echoed throughout the facility. “Where is it?!” He opened the cell with his own set of key. More men surrounded the leader, making sure the King wasn’t gonna get any ideas about escaping. “I know you have it!” He searched through Sonic’s cell. Whatever belongings he thought the King had wasn’t in there.
Sonic prepared himself to be attacked. He was ready. Quill’s bristling in defense. “What exactly are you looking for? You took what money had.” Sonic didn’t care about money, all he was concerned about was getting out with Amy and reuniting with their daughter.
“The emerald!” Towering over Sonic, the coyote inched closer. Sonic eyed him as the enemy reached for his dagger. “We will search your palace if we have to.” He withdrew it from his sheath, and held it to Sonic’s neck. “Tell me where it is and you will live,” Sonic’s scowled at the scent of the coyote. He smelled of alcohol, and smelled like he hadn’t bathed in ages.
Sonic narrowed his eyes, “you have no right to own a Chaos Emerald.” The coyote was not pleased with the king’s answered and pressed his blade further, drawing a little blood. Sonic winced, and quickly sidestepped. His attempt at escaping was short lived as one of the foxes tackled the king and pinned him against the wall of the cell.
“You made a mistake, majesty. Tell me where it is.” He walked over and yanked Sonic by the ear. “I’m giving you one more chance.” The King highly doubted that. Sonic opened his mouth to respond, but quickly closed it when he heard another group rushing towards them.
“Sir!!” A younger coyote ran up to catch up to the leader. “We have company. One of our men came across a group…they're probably here for the royal couple." He announced, panting out the warning.
“… Shit.” When the fox released the grip on Sonic, the blue hedgehog quickly got to his feet, making a dash for the exit and to Amy’s cell. He was attacked again from all around him. “They’re probably here for the King and Queen. Bring them outside. This isn’t over, sire.” Unfortunately, Sonic was outnumbered, one gabbed his knife and stabbed him in the side, they managed to cuff him, and roughly lead them outside.
Lancelot caught a glimpse of a group forming at the the top of the hill. He gestured to the others behind him to stop. Not sure what was gonna happen next. He withdrew his weapon, as well as the rest of the men, and Aurora was in the back of the group, and withdrew her own weapon. They slowly inched closer.
“I would stop right there if you want your King and Queen to live.” A voice roared, causing the group to freeze in their advances toward the hill. The leader of the group presented Sonic and Amy before Lancelot and the rest of the group. The knight bristled in rage under his armor. Aurora stepped toward the front with Lancelot and Erhan. Lancelot stepped infront of her, and shook his head. He could see the anger and the fear in her eyes. Acting on her emotion could be deadly… not only for her, but her parents as well.
“Drop your weapons.” The same coyote commanded.
“Not until they are safe.” Lancelot snarled.
“Tch, I can’t promise that until we get what we want.” With a warning, he drew a dagger to the Queen instead. Sonic bristled in rage. He struggled in the grasp of the his capture. Despite the tight grip, Sonic managed to wiggle free to help his Queen. He headbutted the fox that threatened her, but, Sonic was roughly forced away and forced on the ground, with a bulkier individual holding him at bay.
Aurora was ready. Whatever Lancelot taught her during their training, it was gonna come in use if they hurt her parents. Lancelot grabbed her by the arm. “What do you want?! We’ll give you whatever you want. Let ‘em go!” She blurted out, her eyes locking with the leader.
Their leader started making his way down the steep hill. “Ah. You must be the princess.” Lancelot quickly got in between them. They stared each other down. He held his hands up, showing that he didn’t have any weapons on him this time. Lancelot still held his stance, protecting the princess while the others surrounded the coyote. Their weapons ready. He stood tall, and looked over the knight’s shoulder. “You’ll give me whatever I want, hm? Perhaps instead of a Chaos Emerald. You could accompany me.” His grin was devious while his hazel eyes searched her.
Lancelot shoved him. “Back off!” The coyote glared at him, but distanced himself slowly from the knight.
“A Chaos Emerald really? That’s why you attacked us and took off with my family?”
“Oh, honey. You must not know the power that it holds.”
Aurora glanced towards her parents. She knew exactly how powerful a Chaos Emerald was, but one alone had limited powers compared to having 7 in ones possession. She hadn’t seen it used much growing up, her father only told her what it was capable of. “If I give it to you…” From the corner of her eye, she saw Lancelot look at her, skeptical. “You’ll return them safely?”
He bowed, promising the young princess. He gestured towards his group and told them to hide their weapons. But, they were still on edge.
“Princess. I know you want your parents safe. But, I don’t think…” Erhan whispered from behind them.
“They’re not gonna wait too long. I’ll go retrieve it.” Lancelot muttered. The knight had an idea, but they had to act quickly. He pulled Aurora away, and told her to accompany him on his journey back to Camelot. He was honestly concerned what would happen to her if he left. Sure, he was concerned about the royal couple, the knight had faith in Sonic; he was very skillful about getting out of such situations. The priority was that Aurora would be safe if the situation went downhill for them.
--
As expected, it was a long journey back to Camelot. If they didn’t make haste, it would take them about two days to arrive on foot. By daybreak the following morning, they reached the gates of Camelot. Around them, citizens were whispering, they sounded concern because the knight returned only with the princess. Lancelot walked down the corridor of the palace, ignoring the glances, he took a flight of stairs leading to his living quarters. “It should be in here…” He removed his helmet, feeling like he couldn’t breathe. He searched through his room. Aurora stopped at the doorway, watching him roam through his room. Was the Chaos Emerald seriously hiding in his room? She had thought dad told her it was hidden under the palace. Not a simple living quarters like this. She thought Lancelot used them more than her dad, but she wasn’t sure. She saw him pull out a red Chaos Emerald from underneath his bed. That was securely locked in a small box.
Aurora noticed that it wasn’t as shiny as she thought it would normally be. Lancelot must have realized that she was confused by its appearance. “Its a fake Chaos Emerald.” He retorted. Lancelot wiped the sweat off his brow. “This may not work, Aurora.” The knight admitted, “I don’t think your father would want to risk giving them the real one, though.”
“Could one alone really be that dangerous?”
“Yes. If they’re witty enough they could use it to find the 6 others.” Lancelot walked towards the princess. Aurora bit her bottom lip. Praying that this will work and her parents will be returned safely. “Hold on to me.” Lancelot pulled her closer. Heat rushed towards her cheeks when they touched.
“W-what?”
“Chaos Control.” He whispered under his breath, and closed his eyes. Thinking about the destination, within seconds there was a bright light and they were gone.
Just as quick as they disappeared they reappeared near the two groups. Aurora stumbled on her feet after they appeared. That was a feeling she had never experienced before. Perhaps with a real Chaos Emerald, it would have a different effect on her; not that she ever experienced the true power of a Chaos Emerald, anyway.
Lancelot walked ahead of the others, finding the other group’s leader. He put on an act as if he was reluctant to let go of the emerald in his grasp. “Return the King and Queen first. Then, you can have it.” He gestured. One hand reaching for his sword. The coyote groaned, but he released their cuffs and let them reunite with their side. Aurora ran to embrace her parents, tears rolling down her cheeks now they were that they reunited. The coyote jerked the Chaos Emerald out of the Knight’s hand and admired it. The rest of the group joined him, they talked amongst themselves about their plans with it. Some wanted to sell it so they could have thousands or even millions in their possession, while their leader plotted about finding the others and all that he could accomplish if he had them. They didn’t linger around, in a rush they returned to their base while Lancelot, Erhan and his group made their way back. Sonic got his wound patched up, while Queen Amy was checked for wounds. The peace treaty was signed between the two leaders.
Once they arrived to Camelot the following night, Sonic caught up with Lancelot shortly after. The blue blur never doubted his head knight, but he was slightly concerned about his decision between those thieves. “We’re gonna have to keep a good look out for these guys. Lancelot, why did you…?”
“Sire, it was a fake.” Sonic blinked. He didn’t realize the knight just kept fake Chaos Emeralds around. “Perhaps, you are right though. They may be a threat again once they realize…” Sonic patted his shoulder, feeling at ease knowing that the real Chaos Emerald was still safe at the palace.
“We’ll be ready. They’re just a bunch of thieves. We can take them.” Sonic gave a stretch. “Until then…I’m hitting the hay.” The king flashed him a smile, Lancelot nodded in respect before going in the separate direction.
-
At midnight, Aurora took a stroll around Camelot and found Lancelot sitting at one of the benches near the lake. The knight didn’t notice her presence until Aurora sat next to him. “Shouldn’t you be getting some rest?” She elbowed.
“Same goes for you, Rory.”
She rolled her eyes at hearing her nickname, “I slept like a baby, earlier. I’m energized now.” Aurora admired the reflection of the moon on the surface of the water. “I never felt glad to be back here.”
“Perhaps you’ll sneak out less.”
“Chaos… no." Aurora laughed, then gave a deep sigh, now sitting in silence. "Thanks for letting me go with you guys, today." The black hedgehog nodded. "I hate to admit it, but today was frightening." Aurora reflected, their eyes meeting.
"You handled it well, though. I was impressed."
"Ah! The greatest Knight of my father's Kingdom is impressed with lil' o' me?!" Aurora saw the corners of Lancelot's mouth turn into a grin.
"Hm, don't get too cocky, now. You could use more training." The knight stood up to stretch his back, feeling stiff. "Only one or two sessions of sword training wouldn’t suffice. You will also need to learn combat training, in case you don’t have a weapon. That… I would speak to your father about.” He added.
"That's a great idea! Perhaps you and I can train some tomorrow?" Aurora nodded, maybe the King would be willing to teach hand to hand combat as well, at least she could hope.
Lancelot shrugged, "we shall see. After yesterday, we're gonna be on high alert. Once they find out that it's a fake Chaos Emerald, they'll be pissed." Aurora knew he was right, but the princess didn't want to deal with these guys again. But, Camelot was more than prepared now. "We'll set a date and time for another training, though." Though he never admitted it to the princess, he really enjoyed training her. Sure, it was probably breaking some sort of rule; but King Sonic never said anything against it... yet.
Aurora smile grew wider, "sounds great to me!" She pecked him on the cheek, "goodnight." Thankfully, she was gone before seeing his reddening face. Lancelot surveyed outside of the walls of Camelot before getting back to bed, trying to get some rest before he had to patrol the territory by daybreak. All he could think about was the princess, and how that kiss on the cheek made him feel weird.
---
Days later...
Aurora was disturbed by her lady-in-waiting opening her curtains, allowing the bright afternoon sun to seep into the room, the princess groaned in complaint. "Princess, are you feeling alright?" The young rabbit laid out some clothing for the princess. Aurora confirmed that she just overslept, she was helped with her layers of clothes. She found her parents in the dining hall, neither of them lectured her for waking up so late in the afternoon. Just small talk among the royal family. It was a nice change. Aurora had a feeling that this wouldn't last long very long. Being royalty, and the responsibilities that came with it would always ruin these moments, not that Aurora was complaining.
By 2 that afternoon, Aurora exited the palace in search of a familiar knight. Near the stairs, Sir Gawain was standing guard- another knight that the family formed a close bond with, he nodded in her direction. She acknowledged warmly, "morning! Have you seen Lancelot around?" Aurora searched the courtyard.
"... I think he went to the pub, princess." Gawain wasn't quite sure why the princess needed Lancelot, but he didn't have the right to pry.
Aurora thanked him, and made her way in the direction of the pub that was popular in Camelot. She didn't really like the idea of going in this place, but she was determined to see the knight after not seeing him for three days. She assumed he had been quite busy, and she respected it. Something about his company.. she yearned for, and Aurora started to realize the knight had started to make a huge impression on the young princess heart, and she couldn't deny that as much as she tried to. When she entered the smelly pub, she was given some curious looks from the costumers inside. But, she ignored them and made her way towards the bar where Lancelot was sitting. He was startled slightly when the princess tapped him on the shoulder. "Rough day?" Aurora took note that Lancelot had drunk a tall glass of rum, and currently taking a huge gulp of another glass.
"I can enjoy a little rum without having a bad day, princess."
"A little?" Aurora's eyebrow raised a brow.
"This will be my last one, I promise." Lancelot mumbled, before taking another sip. "You don't need to be in here." He gently warned, glancing over his shoulder keeping an eye out.
"When is your next patrol?" Aurora interrupted the knight. She watched him finish his drink, toss some money on the bar, and stand up. Leading her towards the exit. Lancelot didn't want the princess in her any longer.
"Actually, Gawain will take over the next following days." He allowed Aurora to exit the pub first. Catching up to follow alongside her now.
"Maybe we can fit in a training session then, huh?" Aurora's eyes gleamed in excitement.
"You ready to lose to me so soon?" Lancelot grinned back at her.
"Excuse me?" Aurora shoved him. Acting offended by his response, "if this was a competition, I can assure you that I'd win in a heartbeat!" The princess challenged, feeling confident before the knight.
"If you say so. I'll meet you at the training grounds before sunset." Lancelot brushed against her shoulder, as he walked pass her, walking in the direction of the palace. The knight froze at the top of the stairs when he noticed the Queen had been watching the pair. "M'lady." He bowed his head in respect.
"Sir Lancelot." Her eyes softened, "what was that all about?" She motioned in Aurora's direction. The knight hesitated, not sure if he should be fessing up to the queen about what was discussed between them. But, he knew well enough to not hide things.
"I've been training your daughter..." Lancelot admitted, his gaze fell to the ground. The queen's expression didn't change whatsoever.
"Well, I couldn't choose anyone better to train her." Lancelot acknowledged her compliment with a simple nod. They parted ways, and the queen reunited with her daughter.
--
That night...
The queen was getting ready for bed, her maiden left the room shortly after Sonic made his appearance. "We need to talk about Aurora's upcoming courtship with Alastair's son." At the edge of the bed, Sonic froze for a moment before kicking off his shoes. "I think we should reconsider the agreement." She slipped underneath her silk covers, waiting for her husband's response. "I don't want her courting someone she doesn't even know."
"It's how he runs things." Sonic sounded frustrated with the situation. "This could end our peace with them if we disagree out of the blue."
"We can at least let him meet her, I reckon. Aurora should have her own say who she courts. " She laid beside her husband, and got closer to him. "I've noticed a certain knight growing fond of her." Sonic quickly turned to look at the pink hedgehog. "Honey, don't tell me you didn't notice."
"She's suppose to marry another royal suitor." Sonic rolled his eyes. Honestly, he couldn't even think of his little girl getting married. Time was flying by, and sooner than later their daughter will be Queen; whether or not she desired to take that role or not. But marry a Knight? That wasn't common, at least not that Sonic knew of.
"He'd make a great leader, Sonic. You know that."

Light Consorting with Shadows
Chapter 7: More Of You
Author's Note: Feel free to listen to this playlist while reading, if you like! Thought this was perfect for Aurora's thoughts in this chapter.
[previous]
She felt pain shoot through her body, and the strong arms holding her starting to give way. For some reason, the head knight was carrying her, but he was struggling. The dark knight fell to his knees, dropping her on the grass. The princess saw he was bleeding through his shirt, and the gauze was soaked. He was losing blood... and fast. Aurora was hurt badly, too. She couldn't even remember what exactly led them to get injured so badly, but that didn't matter. They both desperately needed medical attention. She inched closer to the knight, ripping off some fabric from her clothing to apply to the wound.
The knight rested a hand ontop of hers, "don't worry about me. If you think you can run ahead... go... leave me." He looked so pale, and his breathing was labored.
Aurora shook her head, refusing to leave his side. They could get home. They always managed to get out of situations as messy as this, but right now... it felt different. Perhaps it would have be their last?
The knight's ears twitched, catching a sound of movement from behind them. Whoever it was... they were catching up. Panic set in for the knight. "Aurora! GO!" She had never seen him this frightened for her.
Aurora froze, when Shadow grabbed her by the shoulders. Blood stained gloves gripping her hard. She looked at him, fresh tears escaped when she met his hard gaze. "I won't leave you." She finally managed to speak. Aurora could have sworn, Shadow was starting to tear up. "If you can use the Chaos Emerald-" He shook his head, confirming that he did not have one on possession.
Quickly, he looked over his shoulder to see how close their enemies were. They were running out of time. He could hear the shouting getting closer. "If we don't see each other again..." The dark hedgehog inched closer to the young princess, his lips meeting hers. A kiss filled with passion, as if this would be last time they would see one another. "I always loved you, Aurora. Now, please... run." Aurora was still in shock from that kiss. She had never known until now that he actually had the same feelings for her. But, the confession came at the worst time possible.
Just like the knight had asked...
She ran.
Leaving half of her heart behind her.
Unfortunately, she wasn't safe no matter how fast she ran. A black-hooded figure with piercing red eyes was on her tail. Aurora quickly reached for her sword, her hands shaking. Before successfully retrieving her weapon of choice, she tripped over a rock in her path. With the speeds she was traveling, she knew that this would hurt like hell. Thinking quickly, she rolled into a ball. She crashed into a brick wall. Uncurling herself, Aurora felt her body scratched up even more than before. But, she didn't have time to tend to her wounds. Her opponent was inches from her. Its hands glowing.
"Any last words, Princess?"
--
A startling scream filled the castle, when Aurora hit the floor of her living quarters. When she started to sit up, her brow was drenched in sweat as well as the her light-green nightgown she was wearing. Her maiden came rushing in, followed by her mother. Thank Chaos, it was just a really bad nightmare. When her mother, and the maiden reached her side, she started to get herself up from the hard wooden floor, trying to catch her breath. But it wasn't all a nightmare, was it? He kissed you. She shook her head, shaking these thoughts away. "I'm okay, mom. Really. Just a bad dream." Her maiden left to retrieve a cold cloth. Her mom sat on the edge of the bed, trying to brush the unkept quills down.
"Chaos, Rory you scared me half to death." Amy had worried someone had actually broke into the castle, and was trying to get away with hurting her daughter... When Aurora's maiden returned Amy wiped at her daughter's brow. She had a minor mark on her temple from the fall, but nothing major. Aurora's body shook slightly from the coldness of the cloth against her. "Do we need to talk about what happened?" Amy brushed Aurora's sweaty bangs out of her eyes.
Immediately, Aurora shook her head no. She wanted to forget this nightmare. She also knew that if she told her mother about the details of this dream, it would just worry her too much. Especially with them traveling miles away from home soon. She embraced her mom tightly. Aurora turned down the breakfast that was offered, her stomach couldn't handle anything right now. As her parents sat at the dining table, she quickly dismissed herself in search of a certain knight. Please let him be okay. Please. She noticed Blaze and Galahad were keeping guard near the steps of the palace. She was starting to wonder if Lancelot was outside of the kingdom's walls, perhaps on patrol again? Aurora soon got her answer, though, when she caught a glimpse of the knight in question, he was with this human friend that was introduced to the royal family the other day.
They were found at the market, Maria was picking out some veggies, fruit, and some fish that was for sale today. "If you need some clothes, there are some more booths over here-" Shadow stopped mid-sentence when Aurora arrived. Shadow opened his mouth to speak, Maria cut in; it seemed like his friend was eager to finally meet the young princess.
"You must be the princess that I've heard so much about!" Maria gave her collection of items to Shadow to hold, and gave a Aurora a warm handshake. "Aurora, isn't it?"
Maria was greeted with a warm smile, and a handshake. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Maria." The princess then squinted at the knight, "what exactly has he told you about me? Hm?"
In response, Maria gave a hearty laugh. "All good things, princess. I assure you of that!" She elbowed the dark hedgehog beside her. "Here, I'm gonna go look around some more if you need to speak to him? I need to get back to the house soon anyway." The girls agreed that they would catch up just the two of them, once they found the oppontunity.
Once they were alone, Aurora gave Shadow a hug without even hesitating any longer. The knight felt her sigh in relief against his body, "thank goodness you're okay..."
The knight pulled away, his hands on her shoulders. "Of course I am?" Both blushed when their eyes locked with one another. Aurora found herself confessing some details of her nightmare, however she left big gaps of details causing the knight to have more questions than answers. He didn't pry for more; Aurora was grateful for that. He could tell this nightmare really unsettled her. Shadow tried to comfort her by explaining that the day should be easy. He said both of their armors were being adjusted still, (that must have been why he wasn't wearing his). So, he was stuck inside the safety of Camelot.
Honestly, this didn't really comfort Aurora. The knight went on ahead without, until he noticed that she didn't leave her spot. Aurora was staring at the exit gate. "Are there any guards out there?" It wasn't like Aurora was afraid of being attacked. She knew she could handle them. But, that dark figure in her dream concerned her. Would her sword handle such an opponent like this enemy? It was as if this opponent wielded some sort of magic? What scared her the most was losing Shadow. After all these years, she couldn't imagine a life without him. Sure, he had vowed to protect her and her family, but she would give anything to protect him.
She felt Shadow's finger under her chin, guiding her to look at him. "Rory, there's six guards .. maybe even more outside all surrounding the perimeter.. there's nothing to be concerned about." His voice soft, and soothing. Aurora felt her heart beat in her ears when their gaze met once more. She knew deep down that Camelot was heavily protected. However, the princess just couldn't help but shake the feeling that something bad was about to happen. Aurora started breathing heavily, and fell to her knees, startling Shadow. "Let's get you inside." She vaguely heard him over her nagging thoughts, she watched in silence as their family physician checked her over. Aurora didn't feel the need for medical attention, but the willpower wasn't strong enough to deny this. It must have been some sort of panic attack, the doctor confirmed. Most people just think you were just going mad, since the resources to understand such a reaction wasn't available to them yet; so, of course the doctor wasn't sure how to treat her, except with some rest.
She rested for several hours more, once she woke up she would make out the bright moon shining through her window. Night time had approached quickly..
Moments later, the princess was brought a plate of food. She hadn't ate anything since last night and despite not wanting to admit... she started to feel the effects of it. Shaky, weak in the knees, and stomach grumbling quite loudly. Aurora started to eat on the piece of freshly baked bread. The princess sighed in satisfaction. It wasn't often she got to eat in bed, and honestly, she could get use to it. Aurora almost choked on the last piece of bread after hearing a knock on the door, and Shadow stepping in. He looked so awkward standing there. It was adorable. With a mouthful of bread, she couldn't exactly speak, so she tapped the empty spot on the end of her bed. She saw his eyes dart from the bed, to the lonely chair in the room that was setup near her vanity. Instead, dragging the chair across the floor and taking a seat at her bedside. Aurora rolled her eyes.
"I shouldn't be here, I know. So, I'll be quick." He cleared his throat, his eyes kept darting at the door, then back to her. "You feeling alright? If you need anything..."
Aurora stared at her empty plate. Shadow knew that the princess had a maiden that brings her things to her bedroom, but she didn't desire anything other than his company right now. (Except, maybe two or three more rolls.. perhaps). "Could you stay with me, tonight?" Her voice low, in case someone was outside her door. "Please?"
The knight wasn't sure if perhaps Aurora was just frightened after that nightmare, or there was more to it, but he knew his place and where he belonged. In the princess bedroom? If her father was to find out, he'd have his head. "You know, I can't."
Aurora gave a defeated sigh. "I just don't feel that safe tonight." The princess was playing the pity card. It wasn't often that she had to, but in desperate hours such as this... it might just work. "But, if you feel comfortable knowing something bad could happen to-"
Shadow threw his hands in the air, "I'll stay." Aurora smiled as she took a sip of her water. Throughout the evening, her maiden came and left quickly to attend to any of the princess' needs. When she left her for the rest of the night, Shadow reappeared again. Aurora watched him try to get comfortable in the chair. The pair were quiet throughout the night, fearing to be caught by either her parents or the guards that patrolled the palace during the night. Aurora tossed and turned for several hours it seemed like, before she fell into a deep slumber.
--
When she woke up in the morning, she found the knight had joined her in bed. He was out like a light, and he was resting ontop of the thick comforter that was spread out on her bed. She glanced out the window, taking a guess at the time. Her maiden would be coming soon. She inched closer to the dark hedgehog, head resting on his chest, the steady heartbeat comforting to her; even if they only just got a few moments alone. This moment was cut short, as Shadow started to stir awake. Heat rushed to his cheeks, when he realized that the princess was awake now too. Quickly, he sat up from the bed. "I... I apologize." His voice groggy from sleep. Feeling like he overstepped his welcome, and risk getting in trouble. Not only for him, but the princess as well. "It sounded like you were having a bad dream, again."
Aurora couldn't remember much about whether she did have another dream like the night before, she was relieved for that. "Thanks for staying..." The princess knew that the dark hedgehog would have to leave soon. But, he kept his word and stayed with her throughout the night. She got upon her knees, embracing him from behind. The pair was soon interrupted by a faint knock on the door. She cursed under her breath, just as quick as her maiden opened the door, Shadow disappeared in a flash of light. Aurora laid her head back on her pillow, pretending nothing ever happened.
"Who were you talking to, m'lady?" Her servant came in with a handful of clean clothes, suspiciously she scanned the room for a source of the voice.
"Oh, nobody~!" She fibbed, the princess stretched her stiff muscles and was helped out with her morning routine. She noticed that her outfit wasn't her usual heavy gowns. This time, it was a light-green tunic with pants and a pair of knee-high boots. Perhaps easier to handle during combat, and more than likely more comfortable. While getting ready, she requested that her quills be in a ponytail. Her maiden was confused at first, but she didn't argue with the princess. It was actually a nice look on her. She joined her parents in a meal, both of them relieved that she felt up to eating this morning. It was a short and quick meal. They had a good distance to take ahead of them, they couldn't waste more daylight.
Outside the palace Lancelot, and the rest of the knights were getting their horses ready. Maria insisted on traveling with them, which Aurora was tickled for her company- she liked her eager spirit. While the horses were getting saddled, Percival came over to help Aurora with her gold armor. It fit snuggly, but not enough to limit her breathing. "Are you ready, princess?" Percival also helped Aurora mount her horse. The princess looked onward, and squeezed the reins tighter. Nervousness was settling in the pit of her stomach. This wasn't like Aurora, at all. Much like her father, she loved the unknown dangers of a new adventure. Yet, she couldn't shake the memories of that nightmare, and how real it felt. Could it be an omen? She watched Shadow mount his black horse, and the other knights followed suit. None of them showing fear of what may await them. They were trained for this, of course. But, wasn't she as well? At least, that's what Shadow felt like anyway. Otherwise, she wouldn't even be here. She was startled from her thoughts, when Blaze touched her hand. "Aurora?" She lifted her helmet, seeing the concern in her eyes.
"Oh, yes." Aurora pulled her own helmet above her head. "All ready!" She saw Shadow, and her father come before them. A few words were spoken between the two, that wasn't audible to her ears.
"Let's head out." Sonic commanded, fixing his helmet before signaling to his horse to head straight toward the exit of Camelot. Lancelot was close on his tail, Aurora, Percival, Maria, and the rest of the Knights followed closely.
--
That night they made camp, but they didn't wait too long. They fed their horses, and everyone enjoyed a small meal at the fire. If they travel the way they were going, they hoped to reach the village by the next evening. The darkness of the night hopefully will work in their favors.
A few hours later, they were off again. Making a good progress in their travel. They were halfway now. "We won't know what will be waiting for us in a few more miles. I'll tell you went to get off of our horses. Some of us will be much faster on foot, in case we need to make a run for it." Shadow glanced towards Sonic, Aurora, and Blaze, which they acknowledged with a nod. "Galahad, I want you to stay with Maria." He instructed. They took another break once the sun started to peak above the horizon. Once they rested well, and ate once more. They only had about 5 more miles before they would reach their destination.
When they were ontop of a hill, Aurora could make out some remains of the village. Her heart ached for those that lost their lives in protecting their homes. She knew this must have been harder on Shadow to see again. She watched as he came to a stop, all of them dismounting their horses. Aurora followed suit, and caught up to them. She lingered in between her father, and the dark knight. "We'll search the village for any possible clues, then we go further to the west of here." Shadow instructed, as they inched closer to what would have been a entrance that use to have been a gate, and fence that were all taken by the flames, all nothing but ash. The four of them searched thoroughly through what remained of the village. Any source of clues that would provide them answers on who attacked them, and why.
A couple yards of what remained of the village stood a lonely hut- the flames must have stopped before they reached this hut. Her father and Aurora, searched the perimeter of the shelter. Cautiously, Aurora pushed the door opened, not much was left inside. A few pots and pans, broken dishware, and a bed in the far corner. It was dark, dusty, and spiderwebs hung above her head. "Stop. Don't come any closer." A voice startled her in her tracks. She retrieved her sword, ready to defend herself. "I don't wish any harm..."
"Rory?!" Quickly, her father rushed in, taking notice that the door was forced open.
"You! Stop right there..." the stranger's voice started to break. Sonic stood infront of his daughter. He knew that his daughter could probably take this individual without his aide, but he wasn't gonna risk it. A bright red glow appeared before the royal hedgehogs. It flickered slightly, it disappeared just as quickly. "T-take what you like!" The owner of the mysterious glow, rushed out the door. Well, as quick as possible with a bad limp. Outside, the caped individual fell outside and met Blaze's dagger. Shadow soon joined them, carefully scanning over the royal hedgehogs to make sure they were alright.
He pulled his cape down, his face was covered with a strange mask, but it looked damaged and he looked to be bleeding. He bowed his head, in submission. "P-please don't kill me. I...swear to you I mean no harm." He pleaded before them. "I'll be on my way... " the caped stranger started coughing violently. The group decided to hear him out, they gave him some water, and some bread that they carried with them on the trip.
"We may need to take him to Camelot, Shadow. He's losing a lot blood." The knight wasn't sure whether to trust this caped person, if he had lived in this village it was rare to see another Mobian like the rest of them. This village was more known for humankind citizens. Perhaps, he was just seeking refuge in that lonely hut? It wasn't exactly uncommon to find homeless individuals making themselves welcomed there. Whatever answers they were seeking would not be answered right now, while they made camp just outside of the village the stranger ended up passing out from blood loss. They didn't make a lot more progress at the village, but Galahad and Percival agreed to stay behind to search some more once everyone leaves out for Camelot.
They made haste back to Camelot, with the unconscious stranger laid out on a makeshift wooden stretcher. Aurora didn't like this one bit, she was normally fine with helping those in need, just like her father, but this time... it was different. Something about him, startled her. She couldn't shake that feeling. That mysterious red glow from his hands, and those eyes. Just like in her nightmare. She shivered, "I don't feel good about this, Lancelot." Aurora whispered to the knight, catching up to him leading the group. She knew it would be too late, now. Her father was determined to get him some medical help. Who knows, he may have information regarding the ambush on the village?
The knight and the royal hedgehog were finally alone to talk. "Once he gets help, he'll be gone." The knight concluded. His response wasn't exactly reassuring the princess.
What if this was leading them into a deadly trap? Aurora wondered. "He looks like the one I saw in my dream." This caught Shadow's attention, "he almost looks like the one that attacked us... " Aurora remembered she had left those details out before, "I know it was just a dream, but I can't help feel like it was a... vision? A warning?", the princess shrugged dramatically, "I don't know! I just don't feel like this was a good idea." Perhaps it was just a coincidence, but Aurora couldn't shake the feeling.

Light Consorting With Shadows
Chapter 8: Winning Your Heart
[previous]
For the next several days, many questions surfaced throughout Camelot. Not much was known about this stranger, and much like Aurora they wanted to know more. He had some pretty serious injuries to be treated, so not many of their concerns were answered. Once the doctor gave them word that he was in a better condition, the King finally came around to approach him with questions; the stranger's bed was empty. The bed felt cold so he must have been gone for several hours by now. The doctor confirmed that he had just saw him that morning. Perhaps he will return and give the royal family some information on the ambush?
Or at least, that's what they had hoped for.
"He left this morning." The knight confirmed with Aurora, joining her at the bench near the lake. She could see the disappointment written on Shadow's face. He too, was desperate for answers. This was his home that was attacked. He had expected this individual knew something.
Aurora didn't want to admit it out loud, but she had a feeling this wasn't gonna be the last of this guy. Maybe her gut feeling was wrong this time? It was just a really bad nightmare, that's all. She constantly reminded herself every single day. "Great! We can get back to our training, hm?" Aurora shook the thought off, and quickly got to her feet.
"Not today; you have studying to do." Shadow grinned under his helmet, and patted her shoulder.
In response, her shoulders sagged in disappointment. The princess rather not spend hours and hours of her day behind a desk, and reading a dusty-old-book that somehow wasn't considered outdated. In the book were listed different duties that was "required" when she became queen. Deep down, she really didn't know whether she wanted to carry that responsibility when it came time for her to take her mother's place. She knew there was no persuading the knight, "how about tonight?" He gave a nod in agreement before they parted ways.
---
In the next couple hours, Aurora had fallen asleep with her head buried into her book. Her mentor thankfully didn't make an appearance, so Aurora was alone to take notes (if drawing counted as note-taking). An hour or two later, she fell asleep. Just like her father, she wasn't great at staying still for long periods of times. When she woke up, she saw the sun had gone down. Shutting her book in excitement, she ran out the door with her sword. Adrenaline pumping throughout her body. Down the long hallway, she ran into a servant walking in her direction. Accidently, knocking him to the floor. Muttering an apology, she came to his side, helping him up. When their hands touched though, her fur stood up on the back of her neck. It was as if there was an electric charge of some sort? She couldn't place the sensation. He must have felt the same way, because he was quick to jerk away from her touch. He quickly bowed and ran off in the opposite direction.
Weird... Aurora shuddered as he disappeared.
The princess approached the arena, of course the Knight was already there. She watched him stretch out any stiff muscles, while he was doing so. Aurora disappeared. It was rare that she used her abilities. Especially with him. Sure, he knew that she was gifted with Photokinesis, but during their training sessions, she didn't see the need for them. Outside of their sessions, she was almost afraid to use such power, because many people may look at this gift as magic... which was greatly frowned upon, and feared in Camelot. But, what harm would it be to tease her mentor a little? Unbeknownst to him, she was now behind him, while "cloaked" she reached at his tail and gave it a yank. Slightly, startled, Shadow whirled around to face his foe. Only to notice that his invisible foe was now taking his very own sword. It looked like the sword was just hanging in mid-air. Shadow jerked back, as Aurora aimed at him. He dodged, by mere inches of the blade. Then all of a sudden, the sword was gone too. But, only momentarily. She was limited to a very short span she could make objects disappear. Once it reappeared, it just dropped to the ground.
Shadow was quick to retrieve his weapon of choice, but instead of attacking his invisible rival, he strained to sense when she was about to attack next. Aurora was enjoying this way too much, she could see the frustration all over his face. Despite, the frustration on his face, though, she could have sworn she caught a glimpse of excitement in his eyes. "If you wish to play like that, princess... then so be it." In a flash, he was gone too. He knew that she was limited at her cloaking ability, and eventually she would be compromised, and he could attack.
She saw him reappear at the top of the concrete perimeter around Camelot. In haste, she ran up the wall. Her body was starting to feel the effects, soon she was exposed to her rival. In haste, she rolled into a ball- aiming for Shadow. Instead of disappearing, he caught her spin-dash, and soon they both rolled down the other side of the concrete wall. They uncurled just before they hit the ground, Shadow ontop of her. The pair breathing heavily. "I win." The knight breathed out. He loosened his grip on her wrists, and started to get back to his feet.
Aurora was quick to grab at the collar of his armor, and pulled him down for a kiss. It was a short kiss, but the passion was there and the pair definitely felt it. The princess felt her cheeks burn, and this sensation traveled to the tips of her ears. She smiled against his lips, then pushed him off of her. "I think it is I who won, Shadow." She teased. Reminding him that she did indeed ambush him, and have the upper hand before a few moments ago.
Shadow gathered himself, and stood to his feet. His legs feeling like jelly. His eyes scanned her, before giving a soft chuckle. "Fine." His eyes darting from her gaze, deep down he wanted to pull her into another kiss. This time, he would be taking the lead. Instead, he just wished her goodnight.
Aurora still felt her heart pounding in her chest as she made her way back to the palace, that kiss still fresh on her lips. The princess climbed up to her balcony, and snuck inside, closing the curtains and the door behind her. She didn't notice the condition of her attire until she stepped infront of a mirror. Her dress covered in mud, and torn from the tussle between the hedgehogs. She tossed it aside, and retrieved her nightgown. She would have to remember to get rid of the dress before questions were asked. Aurora couldn't exactly be upfront about their encounter...
--
The next morning, a guard approached Aurora near the end of the corridor of the palace. She had just finished breakfast with her family, and was heading in the direction of her "classroom" to continue her studies that she had forgotten all about. "M'lady?" He cleared his throat, and bowed.
Aurora craned her head in attention, he stood tall before her.
"Your father... I need to speak with him... please." He breathed out, in a panic. Behind her, Sonic emerged. Relief rushed over his face when he saw the King. In haste, Sonic followed the guard. Aurora following suit. They were led down a set of spiral stairs. The princess forgot this place even existed underneath the palace. It wasn't often that Aurora came down here as a child. It was heavily guarded... usually. When they came to the bottom of the stairs, they found one of the guards near the door leading to another room where Sonic had hidden the Chaos Emeralds. He was out cold, in puddle of blood. They soon discovered that the unfortunate guard had succumbed to his injuries. Sonic was vivid.
He was a new father, and a loving husband. Aurora watched as her father announced to his family. It was painful to watch as the wife collapsed on the limp body of her beloved spouse. Throughout the several days, and weeks to follow security was tightened around the palace. Aurora was limited to her studies, and anytime outside of the palace. She understood her father's concerns. If someone were to get ahold of the Chaos Emeralds, they would be in serious trouble. Especially in the wrong hands. But, the royal family knew whoever killed the guard... their intentions weren't not good.
It was storming tonight, lightning pierced the night sky, and occasionally striking the land around them. Being stuck inside the palace, Aurora was getting restless; however, for once she took her father's warnings seriously. She turned a corner, heading to her living quarters. Before she made it to her door... she was pulled aside. A hand covering her mouth before she could make a peep. She squirmed in the stranger's grasp as he pulled her into another room. The only thing she could see in the darkness, was those piercing red eyes.
"Keep quiet, or your next to die under my hand." He whispered against her. Not uttering a sound, he released his hold on her. "Good girl." She saw his toothy grin shine in the darkness.
"What do you want?" She hissed.
"I was watching you the other night. Your powers are... impressive." She wished she could get her heart to calm down. "I could surely use someone like you."
Her ears fell against her head, and she balled her hands into a tight fist. "Use me for what, exactly?" Like that was gonna happen. She thought.
"Oh, don't be naive. I can feel the energy from the Chaos Emeralds that your father keeps hidden." A familiar red glow appeared from his hand, "this is where you come in, my dear. You'll be the key." Aurora wasn't quite sure what he expected of her. Sure, she could go undetected... easily. But, Aurora wasn't sure how her photokinesis would respond to the energy from within the Chaos Emeralds.
Not that she would even think of retrieving the Emeralds for this jerk. However, she wasn't quite sure what this stranger was even capable of. It was clear that he had powers of his own. The pair was quiet in small room, the dark being before her... waiting. Aurora didn't say a single word, and simply kneed him in the stomach. Because the room was dark, she couldn't really draw from a light source right now...so her abilities were limited. When he fell to his knees, she ran for the door. It wasn't long before, Aurora could feel him behind her again. He was furious. She was quicker than him, but she soon discovered that he was capable of moving objects with his mind. Various objects came flying towards her, just barely missing the princess. She was getting closer to the dining room, when she passed by a servant that was busy away with his nightly duties.
Behind her, a large table was lifted into the air. "Watch out!" Aurora warned to the servant. Quick on her feet, she jumped infront of him. Pieces of the furniture crashing into her body.
"Princess, I'm so disappointed in you. Just let me have the Chaos Emeralds, than I'll let you be."
"You have no right to them." A familiar voice from behind them, "if you lay another finger on my daughter-" Sonic threat was interrupted when the dark figure turned around now facing Sonic, Shadow, and Blaze standing at the doorway. He charged towards his new rivals. Chairs, dinnerware, and benches were lifted into the air...aiming in their direction.

Light Consorting with Shadows
Chapter 6: Home
[previous]
For several months now Lancelot continued to train the princess, eventually the King was even willing to give her some pointers on some hand-to-hand combat. Lancelot might have been great with the sword, but Sonic was much faster than the Knight. From time to time, the King and his knight would spar, occasionally providing Aurora some important advice during their demonstration. Throughout the summer months, Aurora definitely improved. So much so, that she had the upper hand against the Knight in some of the sessions they held together. Now that Aurora had more training, Lancelot even allowed her to go on patrol with him. The princess enjoyed these patrols with the knight, but did they have to be before the sun even came up?
King Alastair, his son Baron came to pay a visit. To Aurora's disappointment it concerned her courtship with Baron. They started to become acquainted while he stayed for a couple weeks in Camelot. Aurora quickly learned that he was a boring jerk who was too proud of his role as the next heir to his father's throne. He gave him a chance, however, the princess made it perfectly clear that any romantic advances towards her wasn't accepted. She overheard her parents speaking about their courtship, stating that they didn't approve of arranged marriages - like Alastair had. To her surprise, he handled it better than she would have thought. They still would allow Baron to get to know their daughter a little more, though. Unbeknownst to her parents, whenever she knew Baron was planning to meet with her, she climbed out of her balcony and disappeared from sight for several hours.
The following day Alastair packed up their belongings, and departed. Aurora exhaled in relief. For the next several weeks after she did her studies, she continued with her training. When she came across the training grounds, she discovered that Sir Lancelot wasn't present. She could have sworn they had planned to meet tonight. Instead, she saw Sir Percival getting ready. The cat glanced over, and bowed politely. "Evening, princess. Are you ready for your training?"
The princess hoped the disappointment didn't show on her face, "Uh, ok!" Aurora reminded herself that Sir Percival was just as much as skilled 'trainer' as Lancelot would be. This could be good for her to learn her own fighting methods. Aurora gathered her own armor, and wielded her sword at ready. Underneath the cat's mask, she smiled before charging at the princess.
--
The night before...
Lancelot received a letter from a messenger that mounted on a horse, leaving seconds later to make his next delivery. Noting that it was from his former home Glastonbury he quickly opened the letter. He hadn't received a letter in almost a year, now. But, he's guilty of not writing back, so he couldn't blame her for the lack of communication. Some of the ink had been smeared, so he couldn't make out half of it. He only saw what he needed to:
"....They may force us out of our homes... They're capable of anything, I fear. If this finds you in time, dear. We need you're help.
Love,
Maria."
His heartbeat pounded in fear. The knight did not waste anymore time. Lancelot packed some of his belongings and made haste out the door, he received a confused look by the King when he rushed by, Sonic quickly veered infont of the knight, causing him to come to a stop. "Lance, you look like you've seen a ghost. Is everything ok?" Honestly, the king looked worried for his knight. He had never seen such fear in his eyes before.
"Sire, I can't... explain right now. I apologize." He responded, struggling to catch his breath. Lancelot made it pass the blue hedgehog and out the door of the palace, leaving Sonic behind. He was relieved to know that he wasn't followed. He would have to explain more when he returned.
--
The journey could have taken a day to reach, but at the speed he was traveling the knight reached the village he made it by sunset. When he could see a dark cloud of smoke, his pace quickened even more. Oh, Chaos. Was he too late? Homes were burned to ashes, there were some that was savable but... what about the residents? Were they burned alive? His heart immediately sunk when he noticed his old home were burned to the ground. Lancelot picked through any remains of what was in the house. He froze when he heard hooves rushing in his direction. "You!" The dark individual shouted. Lancelot quickly withdrew his weapon. The stranger dismounted his horse and charged towards the Knight. His smaller sword meeting Lancelot's. They sparred momentarily, until another hooded individual came from behind Lancelot, catching him off guard. The knight felt like he was off his game right now, he was letting his emotions getting the best of him.
Lancelot's breath was knocked out of him when he hit the ground. The stranger forced Lancelot's helmet off, and aimed his dagger at his head. Lancelot felt for his weapon - he must have lost it when he had fallen. The end of the blade grazed his temple, and then all of sudden an arrow was shot through the hooded man's chest. Lancelot quickly got to his feet, and focused on his other attacker. Killing him within seconds. Lancelot searched around them, wondering if there were more men around here. When he looked to his left, he saw his savior. She was a tall human, with dirty blonde hair tied up in a messy pony-tail. When she removed her hood, Lancelot was flooded with relief. Maria looked more concerned that she actually killed someone, once their eyes met though, he could have sworn he had saw tears in her soft blue eyes. "You came!" The pair embraced, Maria squeezing him so tight that he feared that she'd shatter his armor. "Shadow... - wait what are you wearing?" Her blue eyes searching his form.
The knight rubbed the back of his head, in his former letters to Maria in the past he had told her that he worked for the royal family, but didn't exactly go into much details. "I'm the head knight of Camelot." The dark hedgehog explained.
"Here I was hoping you were doing something less dangerous..." Maria shook her head, pushing away her bangs. Lancelot snorted, the pair walked off to a nearby lake. "I was afraid I wouldn't see you again."
"Who did this?" Lancelot wondered if Maria was the only one that made it.
"I'm not exactly sure who they are, Shadow." The knight's ear twitched, still not use to hearing that name. "They demanded our food supply, medical supplies, and our money, and said their King would force out of the village. Something about claiming territory, I think." That didn't set well with the hedgehog. Maria lead the knight a few yards away, discovering an underground passageway. "We heard them coming, and hid down here. Some of the men defended our home, but unfortunately it was too late..." Maria whispered to her friend. The knight vowed to everyone that he will make sure they pay for they've done. He knew it wasn't practical to stay in here anymore, surely they would be welcomed in Camelot. Until they could get justice for their loss. He wasn't sure how many townspeople would feel about humankind, but honestly he did not care. He announced to the villagers about the plan, they would leave before daybreak. He helped some of the people repair their weapons (for the time being at least, they weren't very sturdy like the weapons back at Camelot). They settled in for bed, while the dark knight kept watch. Only the sounds of random critters could be heard throughout the night while millions of thoughts ran through his head. His body was filled with so much rage right now. Yet, the knight knew better to react in anger, because he had Maria's safety and the rest of this community's safety to think about.
On the journey back to Camelot, Lancelot took the lead, but he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched. He even swore he saw piercing red eyes staring back at him, when he looked over his shoulder. A shiver ran up his spine, and he quickened his pace with the villagers. Shaking it off as if it was nothing.
--
Aurora was starting to really enjoy training with Sir Percival, the princess learned a lot of new fighting methods that Lancelot had never demonstrated. Aurora also discovered that she was more agile than Lancelot, which kinda threw her off during the training, but she eventually got the upper hand. The lavender cat was very impressed. After the training sessions, the two started to learn more about another. Sir Percival actual name was in fact Blaze, Aurora witnessed her using pyrokinesis; making her able to create and control fire. She admitted that she rarely likes to use it, because it could get dangerously out of hand. Aurora gained a lot of respect for this knight during their time together.
Near daybreak, she heard a commotion just outside of her quarters. Pulling her silk sheets off of her, curiosity getting the better of her. Feeling groggy, and dazed, she poked her head out. Faintly, hearing her father's voice echo through the hallway. There was an unfamiliar female voice that followed suit. She strained to listen.
"Sire, my friend Shadow tells me that you could provide us some food and shelter." The female voice spoke again. Sonic was confused, who the heck is this Shadow guy?
"I don't really recall meeting this friend of yours... uh.. " His head knight cleared his throat, awkwardly stepping forward, causing Sonic to go quiet.
"It is I, sire."
Aurora was fully awake now, and too invested in this conversation. She tiptoed in the direction where the voices was coming from, on the other side of the wall. Over the years, she became pretty skilled in eavesdropping on some of her parents conversations. She peeked down the hallway where they were standing. It was just her father, a human girl with long dirty blonde hair, and the dark knight beside her.
The blonde-haired girl awkwardly responded next, "I mean Lancelot... my apologizes I wasn't aware that you didn't know him by that name." Aurora saw her father nod in acknowledgement.
The King wasn't fazed, "I'm always willing to help. You're welcome to stay here, and then tomorrow we can talk about what happened back at Glastonbury." Aurora saw her father gesture towards some guards in the hallway. They started to make their way towards the exit of the palace. Near the entrance of the city, there were some empty two story buildings that were mainly for visitors, and for those in desperate need. Sonic had people assigned to bring food, and different necessities that they may need. Right now, the homes were fully stocked for any visitor. If they needed medical attention, Sonic guided them to his most reliable physician. Aurora watched from her balcony, catching a glimpse of her father and Lancelot returning to the castle. They stopped at the top of the stairs, before her father went onward leaving the Knight alone. His eyes locked with hers, in response she looked away, whistling innocently.
"Spying can get you in trouble, princess."
"How dare you! I'm just enjoying this beautiful sunrise." She teased. If anyone would have caught her spying, it would be him. Or her own father on rare occasions. "So... uh, who were those people? And that lady with you?" The princess had so many questions, but from the knight's rough appearance, perhaps she shouldn't pry too much.
He gave a sigh, "we can talk about it tomorrow. For now, try to get some more rest." It was clear that Lancelot didn't want to get too personal right now. Aurora respected his wishes, and the pair said goodnight to one another.
The hours that went by were dragging slowly, or at least that's how it felt, as the princess couldn't rest very well. After tossing and turning for an hour longer, Aurora finally gave in and fell asleep as the sun pierced through her room. She was grateful to her lady-in-waiting for leaving her alone, and allowing her to rest as much as she needed.
By lunch hour, she was woken up by her mother's lady-in-waiting instead. Reluctantly, Aurora started to get ready for the day ahead of her. When she joined the dining hall, she just saw her mother sitting there. Which was rare to see. Before she could even ask about her father, he came through the double doors behind them and joined the pair at the table, then the servers immediately laid out a spread of food before them. "Did they get settled in alright?" Amy looked at Sonic, concern written all over her face. In response, Sonic just nodded with a mouthful of food.
"I'm gonna discuss everything at the roundtable later today. We don't even know who ambushed them. There's rumors of the Royal court trying to claim that piece of land as their own. That's all we know." Sonic shrugged. The royal family fell quiet, Aurora wanted to chime in on the conversation but that would give away that she was in fact eavesdropping last night, therefore, she kept silent. Their lunch was interrupted by a guard bursting in the door, addressing the king that the townspeople were not too thrilled about their visitors. Sonic looked disappointed. The family removed themselves from the dining table.
Ahead of them, a crowd of townspeople were surrounding the palace. They were yelling, shouting out insults towards these strangers. In Camelot the citizens weren't use to humankind being their neighbors, and they were wondering why their King had allowed them in the comforts of their home. Some of the knights were trying to calm them down, while other guards were blocking them from getting closer to the entrance of the palace. Sonic addressed the townspeople once the hateful outbursts finally settled down. "Everyone knows I am a fair leader, if anyone comes to us for help. I will not hesitate to offer aid." His voice stern, as he addressed his people. "I know you have your concerns, however, they currently have no home of their own. Camelot is fortunate to have shelter, and anything they may need at this moment. For now, I ask you to treat them as your own kind." He overheard some townspeople mumbling in disgust, but they didn't cause a big scene. He encouraged them to carry on with their day, and give the strangers some space. After his speech, Sonic seemed very frustrated, but found a way to shrug it off, as his knights gathered around him. All of them walking off in a different direction, leaving Aurora and her mother alone.
---
The Next Evening...
Aurora had settled on a stump near the lake just outside of the walls of Camelot. It was a still evening, and she found it to be soothing. She heard some footsteps behind her, making her bristle slightly. Glancing over her shoulder stood Lancelot, his brow raised slightly, but he didn't say a word. No lecture about being outside of the city. Instead, he sat down beside her. She smiled towards him, warmth traveling to her cheeks when his shoulder brushed against her own. "Percival said your training sessions has been going well." His eyes darted towards her own.
"Blaze," Aurora corrected him.
"Who...? Oh." He brought his knees to his chest, and stared off to the horizon. "Anyway, you apparently impressed her. Which isn't easy to come by." He snorted.
"I wasn't really expecting to be abandoned by my mentor," she teased. "I think I learned a lot training with her, though." Aurora admitted, her eyes gleaming in confidence.
"Tch, I didn't abandon you. I had... something to take care of."
"Dad seemed concerned when you left like that. He mentioned that you looked afraid. I have never known the 'great Lancelot' to be afraid." She elbowed him slightly. The knight hardly reacted to her. "What happened, exactly?" Aurora studied his expression after she started to encourage him to open up.
"I thought I would be too late, and she ..." Lancelot stood up suddenly, feeling uncomfortable about this conversation; the memory of that day was still fresh on his mind. "It doesn't matter what happened, Maria is safe now, as well as the others." He knew that Aurora would want to explain who this Maria person was, and why she was so important to him. "Her and I were raised up together." Lancelot sighed in defeat, suddenly his past becoming more clear. The knight refused to meet her gaze, he felt so vulnerable. "Back at home, I was known as Shadow the Hedgehog.." He admitted, "when I came to Camelot, I wanted to just be addressed as Lancelot."
"I think Shadow suits you better..." But honestly, after so many years of knowing him as Sir Lancelot, it would be hard to get use to calling him by another name. "What are ya'll gonna do?" Aurora was concerned, and it was clear to see in her eyes. The princess wanted to reach for his hand, she knew he was under a lot of stress right now. Unaware to her, just her presence right now was enough to keep this weary knight at ease.
Shadow blinked at her, a little taken back by the response. "Keep that between us, for now." He cleared his throat. The knight ran his hands through his quills, "your father and I have been talking about our next move. It'll be tricky with such vague details we have on who attacked them. We'll plan to head out to Glastonbury in a couple of days.." Shadow gave a long sigh, "can you promise me something, Rory?" His hand brushed against her own, instead of moving away from the royal hedgehog, in response, he grasped her hand. He felt a jolt of electricity shoot up his hand when they touched. "I trust you can hold your own. If I allow you to go with me." He swallowed a lump in his throat, "I want you to go with me." Awkwardly, the knight looked away, squeezing her hand. "Please remember everything Percival and I taught you. For, it could surely be a life or death situation." He paused, their gaze finally meeting once more. Aurora opened her mouth to speak, but the knight wasn't done. "This will not be another training session. These people desire to kill their opponent. I will not allow that to happen. I wouldn't ask if I didn't think you could handle it." Lancelot finally released her hand, but he honestly wished he hadn't let go; her hand fit so nicely in his own. "Percival is gonna help you fit into some proper armor in the morning."
Flabbergasted couldn't even express how she felt right now. Her heart was pounding in her chest ever since Shadow held it in his own. Perhaps she was dreaming all of this and in reality her maiden was trying to wake her. Aurora felt so flustered, and she knew it was visible on her face because Shadow's cheeks started to redden as well. "Uh...right! I promise to be careful, Lancelot!" But, she had a concern. Her father could be an obstacle. He would never allow her to go on a deadly mission like this. "My dad isn't gonna like your idea, though."
"Suddenly your obeying your father's wishes?"
"Hey, shut up!" She punched him in the arm. "I'm serious."
Shadow rubbed his arm, wincing, "after the improvement you have made with your training, I think your father... isn't as worried." He had mentioned that Sonic will indeed be traveling with them, so he could keep a closer eye on his daughter instead of pacing the floor back at the castle during their absence.
Aurora felt somewhat relieved that maybe her father was starting to see her as a young adult, now. But, she knew no matter how mature she was becoming she will always remain her dad's baby girl.

Light Consorting with Shadows
Chapter 4: Ambush (edited version)
 Author’s note: I dug through my stories on my blog, went through my drafts and decided to touch up Chapter 4. I am planning on working on chapter 5 hopefully tonight!
                                 *I don’t claim Aurora as my own, she rightfully belongs to @e-vay !
It was a long travel to a neighboring kingdom Murasia, and after they made their way through the forest, that was worth at least two days of trekking through, then they would need to travel by boat for until they arrived on the island where the older kingdom stood strong. For years, they had yearned to become allies, and finally sign a peace treaty; that Sonic didn’t feel the need to sign because a piece of paper did not mean a thing to him. It was the actions and the fellow king’s character that mattered to him, more.
He did not travel alone. His wife came along, and with much persuasion from his daughter she tagged along with her parents – he didn’t want to bring up the fact that this dude was interested in marrying his son off to Aurora.
In the wagon, being pulled by a pair of horses Aurora was currently resting on some silk sheets, surrounded by supplies in the wagon. She the puffy clouds pass over her head, and occasionally feeling the breeze tickling her face slightly soothed her. Oh, and the fact that she was no longer restricted in Camelot. She felt free... and perhaps forgetting her role as a princess altogether, if only for a short time. Sure there were knights surrounding her and her family to secure their safety, which she merely ignored many hours ago. Lancelot might’ve been great company too if he was actually being sociable. That wasn’t the case today, the dark hedgehog was far too focused on getting to their destination instead of making small talk with the princess. It surprised her how disappointed she felt because of how distant he was being. However, this feeling was quickly ignored when she realized how she was being quite selfish simply because the knight was on duty.
There was so much she wanted to do after they reached the village. Explore, interact with the villagers, try various foods the merchants may sell there, and even if it was a fleeting thought... perhaps sneak out of the glimpse of her royal bodyguards’ view to explore outside of the village walls. There were lots of sights she desired to see. But, she had to remind herself this wasn’t a vacation of any sort.
Aurora was soon startled awake when the wagon hit a pothole, and then suddenly coming to a complete stop. When she opened her eyes, she noticed that she stars were shining brightly. She was quite shocked on how long she had been asleep. She overheard her parents talking about setting camp here, and taking a break before continuing onward. Hopping out of the wagon, Aurora gave a stretch and a yawn before meeting up with her parents. Behind her, the horses kicked at the ground, neighed and shook their heads in response a knight approached the two horses to offer them some fresh water and food, and then guided them away from the path, leaving the wagon abandoned on the side of the road. The horses ate some more grass, and some apples provided by their caretakers. Once they decided where to setup camp, which was between several trees - only a faint shine from the moon peeked through providing them some light. Aurora caught a sight of Lancelot leaning against one tree, just observing his surrounding for any sight of danger. Her attention went back to her parents  who was laying out their bedding for the night, a goodnight kiss was exchanged between them, and as she wiggled underneath her blanket she heard her father whisper to her “Goodnight, Tiny.”
Whenever Aurora tried to fall asleep again she was quickly disturbed by the sound of creatures that were more lively during the nighttime. Owls, coyote’s yelping and even wolves howling, and her father’s snoring was the most disturbing of them all. With a sigh, Aurora left her bed. As she came near the tree Lancelot had been standing before she leaned against it to support her.
Snap! Came the sound of a twig, followed by the sound of footsteps. Starling her, Aurora quickly peeked over to the left of her to notice Lancelot was approaching her. All she could see through the darkness was his crimson eyes, and the moon shining off his armor. “Princess?” He cleared his throat to make a correction to his response, “Aurora. What are you doing awake?”
“Not tired.” She answered with a shrug, “I slept the whole way here.” Lancelot nodded in understanding, and came closer to stand in front of her. Aurora gave him a challenging look, “don’t even think about it. This is my tree.”
“Oh? I don’t see your name on it.” He knew she was only teasing, so he played along. Why not? It was gonna be a long night, he might as well make it a little interesting!
Aurora frowned at him, and then glanced around to look at the ground to search for a good stick to write her name on the tree. With her hand resting on the trunk, she inched a little further away from the tree to reach down and grab the stick. She turned, her back facing Lancelot now as she carved her name into the trunk of the tree. “There! Happy now?” She heard Lancelot stifle a soft laugh, and he shook his head, taking a step closer to take the stick she carved her name with.
“Hey! Don’t carve in my- What are you carving, anyway?” Lancelot gestured for her to wait, and she stood next to him, struggling to see what he was carving into the tree. As she waited, Aurora tapped her foot impatiently until Lancelot moved aside.
“Fixed it.”
She gave him a suspicious look before checking to see what he carved into the tree. It read: “Lancelot was here first”. She turned around to face him again, “how old are you? Five?”
“Tch. Says the one who started this fight over a tree.”
“....Hmph! I bet you can’t climb it!” A wide grin spread across her face.
Lancelot glanced up to the nearest branch - which would be a huge challenge for either of them no matter how skilled they were in climbing. “Actually, I don’t think-” Before Lancelot could argue back, Aurora was already attempting to climb it. She struggled to even reach the nearest branch, she dug her nails into the bark to and pushed herself up only to lose her footing on the side of the tree when getting a tad closer to the branch. As she fell, it was all a blur until she felt two strong arms around her before hitting the ground. They looked at each other, in silence.
“Don’t you dare say it.” Aurora gave a nervous laugh, and walked away from the knight.
“Say what?”
“I told you so.”
Lancelot looked away, but that smirk didn’t go unnoticed by Aurora whatsoever. “... I was actually gonna say you lost your own bet.”
-
The following day, they were heading in the direction of the deep forest that stretched for miles and miles. There was no other route to take unless they preferred to take a boat across the borderline. It was a risky journey ahead, for the forest packed lots of traps and horrific legends that left man and women shaking. Theories of ghosts haunting were spread across the land, which lead them to believe that is why many who traveled here never returned. Instead of hesitation among the group, however. Sonic led them onward displaying no sign of fear whatsoever. This was typical of the hedgehog and everyone simply went along, trusting their leader’s intuition instead of dwelling on childish fairy tales.
For a couple hours they continued onward without stopping for a break, until the horses needed to be tended to and the canteens that had been provided for the whole group was refilled with fresh water that they gathered from a nearby stream. Some of the knights removed their helmets and poured some water on their heads to cool them off while others gathered some snacks, and found themselves a comfortable seat on the damp grass. With the soothing breeze, and their quiet surroundings it was a struggle for many to not dose off right that second. Once the horses’ restored their energy again, they kicked at the ground, and tugged at the restraints as if they were ready to take on without the group. Sonic was the first to stand up and encourage the others to get back on their feet again. They were wasting precious daylight! Every knight returned in their designated position among the group like before, but not without giving a sigh of complaint for having such a short break, yet they respected the king’s wishes and made themselves ready for the rest of the journey for the day.
Following alongside her parents, Aurora caught a glimpse of Lancelot in the corner of her eye. He was gripping his hilt of his sword awfully tight. Taking a few steps away from her parents, she quietly approached the knight and elbowed him gently. Who in turn, quickly glanced in her direction. “You’re not nervous about those ghosts, are you?”
“I have a feeling ghosts will be the least of our worries, princess.” Her eyebrows arched slightly when Lancelot was being so vague.
“That’s awfully vague... what are you nervous about then?”
It surprised him somewhat that she picked up on his body language so quickly in the first place. Yet at the same time... after being in her company more often, she could’ve caught on to many of his quirks and habits in that period of time. Is it really that obvious? No matter, Lancelot was standing his ground by completely ignoring the following question and focused on their surroundings instead. Why should he worry her with his suspicion?
                                                         ~~~
  “Aurora?” That voice sounded all too familiar, and only few that she was close to called her by her name. Gradually that voice encouraged her to fight the pain. The princess’s eyes begun to open, blinking up at the handsome knight hovering above her. Everything was hazy. Squinting, and slowly lifting her head. “Don’t move.” The knight’s voice was soft, but stern. With a groan, she obeyed and rested her head. What in the world happened? Why did her head hurt so bad? She was bearing tons of questions that she was fearing to discover the answers to.
She rested her eyes momentarily, until she was disturbed with that throbbing pain on the back of her head, and the terrible ringing in her ears. The princess took notice that Lancelot was no longer beside her. Here in a tent, all alone. Her body ached when she moved any. Something awful had taken place, that was for sure. She called out, her voice straining. Then, she heard footsteps and a shadow came closer to her tent. Peeking in, it was the unmasked knight – Lancelot. When he discovered she was awake, he entered the tent, crouching down to her level. She raised a brow, taking in his appearance. He had a cut along his eye, and jawline. Aurora opened her mouth to speak, only to find a canteen of water presented before her. She desperately desired for some water, and so she gladly took his offer without another word.
The refreshing sips of water seemed to help gain her voice back, “w-what happened?” She watched the flame flicker in the lantern, that seemed to grow duller and duller.
It was that dreaded question Lancelot wasn’t prepared for. He felt like a failure to the royal family. However, he couldn’t hide it for too long. She would be able to figure it out soon enough. Without looking at her, the knight sighed. “We were ambushed, the other night.” Well, that clarified why Lancelot was injured. He must’ve fought hard.
Aurora lifted her gaze to watch the knight’s face, watching for a change in his expression. “Is everyone okay…?” Hell, she was surprised her parents wasn’t freaking out about her being knocked out. Other than that, she heard no commotion outside. No stirring of feet, hooves beating against the ground, just the eerie stillness of the forest.
“There was a huge number of attackers, Aurora. Some of us made it through okay, while…” The solemn tone suggested that something tragic had happened, that she was unaware of.
She swallowed thickly, and her chest tightened. “Mom and dad?” Immediately, she noticed Lancelot clenching up his fist.
“They were taken.” Their eyes met, and Aurora could’ve sworn she saw sorrow in his eyes. It was a rare sight. Of course, it made sense though. Lancelot cared a lot about her and her parents, and the very kingdom itself.
More questions filled the princess’ head. Who took her parents away, and why? “W-we have to find them!” She exclaimed with determination, although, her voice cracking with emotion did not help her sound so strong. Fighting through the pain, she slowly stood to her feet, albeit very wobbly as she did so. Lancelot was on his feet in a heartbeat, and quickly steadied her before she fell. Don’t need her bumping her head again, he thought.
“Aurora, we have to plan this out. But, first… you need medical attention. You bumped your head- “
She jerked away from him, only to stumble and almost fell out of the tent in a very unfashionable way. “N-No! They may hurt them… or w-worse!” And then, there came the tears.
The knight’s hands rested on her shoulders, and turned her around to face him. “Aurora, I will do anything in my power to get them back to safety. But, we must look at this in a realistic way.” He paused, once Aurora finally met his gaze again; shimmering with fresh tears. “I would like to remind you that your father probably has this situation well under control… in his own way. “Aurora gave a nod. She felt dizzy now. Both from the head injury and the stress of the news she just received.
                                                           ~~~
It was a bit of a risk as they took the boat to the nearby island, that was home to the Murasian’s civilization. It did not look like much from afar, but this very kingdom use to dominate most of the world until the former king had been brutally murdered. His great grandson took over, bringing peace for years to come. During King Alastair’s reign, the civilization was known for their advancement in technology, and many desired trade with them. Camelot’s civilization was the only outsider that the Murasian’s accepted as their allies, and would trade with them in the future.
They were indeed expecting the royal family to set foot on their territory, but would they be friendly when they discover that the king and queen were not with them? It would defiantly look sketchy. Lancelot took Aurora’s hand, and helped her along the shore. Not far from the shoreline, there were stone steps up ahead. Lancelot stood there, surveying the walls that protected the kingdom; feeling weary of archers that may be standing on top.
“Let me go first.” Aurora offered, stepping ahead of him. His eyes grew wide, slightly startled by such a bold move.
“No.” He grabbed her by the wrist gently, “you’re not leaving my side.”
“I can protect myself.” She stubbornly remarked, “what if they recognize-“The sound of a loud horn hurt their ears. Lancelot saw a figure on top of the towers, and he pushed himself onto Aurora, her back against the stone wall. She opened her mouth to speak, only to be hushed by the knight. She glared at him with piercing emerald eyes.
It wasn’t until they heard something from behind them. It sounded like voices, and then from the corner of Lancelot’s eye he noticed a with two passengers paddling to the shore. He cursed under his breath as begun to pick up the containers being carried on the boat, and stepped off the boat, now walking closer to the steps. One of the men noticed the two immediately. His eyes darkened, and he dropped his things. He pulled out a dagger. “State the meaning of your presence. Now.”
Lancelot gave Aurora some room, now standing in front of her. For once, the knight did not pull out his sword. He wanted to make this as peaceful as possible. Aurora needed medical help, and they needed assistance in finding the king and queen. Calmly, he stood his ground as another native came forward – who left his belongings next to the other container. “I am Sir Lancelot of Camelot. We came for your assistance.” The two Murasians looked at each other, and slowly lowered the dagger held in tightly in their grasps.
“Camelot, you say? The King Alastair was supposed to meet with King Sonic. If you say you’re with King Sonic, dare I say. Where is he now?” The taller and muscular individual stared the two down, harshly.
“That’s why we came. My majesty and his queen was kidnapped the other night.” Their eyes grew wide, but they were still skeptical of the whole situation. The older and smaller Murasian took a step forward, “and who are you, miss?” He pointed with his dagger in the direction of Aurora.
“I am Sonic’s daughter, Princess Aurora.” It rolled off her tongue, after saying that same phrase for many years.
“Well, well. The king would be happy to see you, M’lady.” He coughed, “despite the circumstances. My apologizes. We shall take you to him, then. Perhaps he’ll even assist in your search.” Grabbing their belongings, the natives led the pair up the stairs to be welcomed to an almost ancient appearance, with a touch of modern buildings spotted here and there. Walking further down the pathway, they did not meet very many of Murasians out and about, and if they did there were some odd glances sent their way. The guards at the gate, which blocked the entrance to the castle stood upright and looked at the fellow citizens, which now Lancelot and Aurora soon learned were the ones who conducted trade with other civilizations. The youngest of the two, spoke to the guards in a hushed voice. He glanced at Aurora, gave a nod and stepped aside to open the gate. Inside the palace, they admired their surroundings. It was nice here, but it definitely wasn’t like home. Ironic how Aurora had wanted to get outside of the walls of Camelot, however, due to the situation at hand, she desperately just wanted to be back home instead... safe with her parents.
“What’s this all about?” That deep voice sounded from the walls of the palace. Immediately, the traders fell to their knees. Lancelot and Aurora did not follow along, which earned a disapproval scowl from the king. “No kneeling before my presence?” Alastair scoffed, he stepped forward. Lancelot stared him straight in the eye unmoved by his cold stare.
“You are not my king, therefore I refuse to kneel.” Such a bold move that would have cost the lives of many that spoke to him in a manner just like this.
“Is that so? Then who is your king?”
“King Sonic.” Alastair was taken aback. “That doesn’t make sense. If he’s not bold enough to face me, then we can’t settle the deal.”
“No, sir. Sonic and his queen Amy was taken while we were camping.” Everything was becoming clearer now, and Alastair’s gaze seemed to soften ever so slightly. The Princess was introduced soon after, and then Lancelot mentioned seeking medical attention for her. It wasn’t long before one of the servants came back with the middle-aged physician who took Aurora away to be examined. The rest of the evening, the knight, the king of Murasia and his son Baron talked about finding the royal couple of Camelot. They concluded that there wasn’t much that could be done, especially without any clues of who these attackers were and where they even came from. However, Alastair was willing to assist with his strongest soldiers alongside to fight whatever forces that may intervene in the couple’s safety. “Now, I want you to realize that I suspect something in return for my assistance when they are found..” He retorted, his gaze once more cold, but the knight wasn’t fazed, and stood stiff under his gaze, they quietly settled on an agreement, the King dismissed Lancelot while Alastair found his men dressed in heavy armor to discuss the plan.
                                                       ~~~
Lancelot took a quick bath, and made his way down the hallway. They were in a building connected to the palace where the physician was nearby. The other rooms sometimes housed patients with severe illnesses, but now there were only a few rooms that were currently being used. The room at the end of the corridor had been where Aurora was staying the night. The knight lightly knocked on the door, before being greeted with a soft “come in” from the princess.
“Hey.”
Aurora perked up when noticing it wasn’t her doctor, but instead it was a familiar face who wasn’t asking her a thousand questions that concerned her wellbeing. She smiled faintly. “Hi.”
Lancelot looked around the room, kind of awkward. “I didn’t wake you, did I?”
“Nope.” She seemed a bit more upbeat now that she had something to take for the pain, and a warm place to rest. She invited him to join her at the end of the bed.
“I miss being at home…” After longest span of silence between the two Aurora spoke up again. If she hadn’t, Lancelot would have been asleep by now.
Lancelot mumbled something under his breath, and rubbed at his eyes. “I can understand why.”
“Don’t you miss being at home?”
He wasn’t sure if he was making the right connections to her question. Lancelot looked at her, his brow raised slightly. Was she implying Camelot, or his home before he entered knighthood? He did not know. It was possible she was asking about his past; since there were still a lot he hadn’t told her. “…I do.”
Aurora gave a yawn, and stretched out those stiff muscles. “It all feels like a dream, you know.” If that was so, it would be great time to wake up by now!
“It’ll be over, soon. Until then, you need your rest.” The dark knight stood to his feet, and was about to walk away until he felt her hand grasp a hold of his own. He gave it a light squeeze.
 “Please… don’t leave.”
Heat rushed to his cheeks. Sharing a bed with her? She can’t be serious! Sonic would have his head! “No we shouldn’t- “
“Okay, first of all. You have a dirty mind. Secondly,” she raised her voice slightly, showing she was frustrated that the knight jumped to conclusions. “we don’t have to share the bed. You can take that ugly couch.” Aurora grinned, pointing towards the furniture.
Boy, did he feel stupid. “I knew that.” He frowned. Refusing to look her way until his cheeks weren’t red as a tomato. He walked away, kicked off his boots, and took off his gloves before settling down.
“Goodnight my fair knight.” She stifled a laugh, before rolling over on her side.
 “Goodnight, m’lady.”
“Goodnight, Lancey.”
“Stop that.”
Another giggle from the other side of the room, “wait! I’ve got one more I promise.” The knight gave a sigh, but waited. It was like being in the same room as her father. They were certainly two peas in a pod.
“Goodnight my- uh.” Aurora gave an awkward laugh, “I lost it.”
“I’ve noticed.” Through the darkness, Lancelot grinned wider. “Now, get some sleep Rory.” In response, Aurora snorted at his remark, when she closed her eyes slumber quickly took over her.
Chapter 3: May I have this Dance?
Passively Aurora listened to the conversation between her parents and another couple that were invited to the celebration. She was too focused on the crowd to pay any mind to what they had to say. Many young and old citizens had gathered in the plaza to honor her father’s birthday. Near the steep hill there had been a band that formed to play some slow, and soothing music. Not far from them there was a table spread out of food that some of the best cooks around the village had prepared for the King. However, no matter how appealing it was… Aurora was looking for a certain knight among the chaotic crowd. There was no sign of the black hedgehog. Had he backed out of coming? Aurora quickly assumed since he wasn’t known to be a party-goer it was very well plausible that he didn’t keep his word.
Looking back at her parents, she noticed the dull expression on her father’s face - clearly showing a lack of interest in the conversation now. He awkwardly tapped his foot when the lady turned to face Amy, talking about money, politics, the well-being of the kingdom, and some juicy gossip that neither really cared to hear. Her mother smiled warmly though, giving a nod or two in response to the citizen’s current topic. How in the world did her parents do it without going mad? Perhaps in the years to come… it would become more relevant to her role as a princess or even a Queen once her parents are no longer on the throne.  Aurora shook her head to rid of these thoughts. After a few minutes of listening to the dull conversation drag on, Aurora gave a quick glance to her parent’s faces and the couple before them and then quietly sneaked away.
To her relief no one noticed.
As she walked toward the group, the crowd of Mobians turned to her, many of the males tipped their hats, and bowed in respect. She weakly smiled in their direction, but hurried to escape the crowd, squeezing between them to get to her destination. There was an elderly coyote that had brought along some of his famous and well-loved desserts. Aurora had talked with him many times before, occasionally offering to help him in his shop. He had recently lost his wife, but he had a passion for carrying on with his pastries despite the loss and grief he felt.
Aurora greeted him with a smile and offered him a large amount of money to help him out, sneaking the bag of currency underneath the table. He denied her offer, and said all of his pastries were free for the special occasion. She knew business was slow after since his wife had died, how could she bare seeing a nice gentleman home be taken away from him? Aurora had spoken about the issue with her dad previously, and as expected he was more than willing to allow him to skip paying on taxes until he was capable of doing so. “Please… take it. You need it more than I do, sir.” His dull eyes met hers, and he took the money from her. It was enough to cover for taxes for approximately half of the year! Tears welled up in his eyes, which he quickly wiped away before standing up slowly and opening a bag to drop several delicious pastries, offering it to her. Aurora was hesitant at first to take them, but she knew how much it meant to the elderly coyote. An idea came to her and she squeezed behind the table to sit next to him, taking the bag from him and opening it. Aurora pulled out two cookies, offering one to him. A warm wrinkling smile spread across his face as he took it. They clashed the two cookies together, saying “cheers!” in unison. Like many times before, lunch with him was always a pleasant experience. She loved hearing his stories he told ever since she was only 7 years of age. Aurora wouldn’t trade these memories with him and his wife for anything in the world.
Once they said their goodbye’s Aurora gave him a tight embrace, before leaving him behind to serve his loyal customers. As she rounded a corner, there was a strong stench that made her nose burn. Leaning against a wall was a young male porcupine that was overly dressed for the occasion, and he stunk of cologne. “I’m surprised he didn’t drown from using so much…” She muttered under her breath. Moving away from the wall, he walked over to her. Aurora’s heart immediately sunk. She whistled and looked around, as if not even noticing he was approaching.
“M’lady?” He took her hand, and bowed his head to plant a kiss upon her hand. “You look lovely, today, I must say.” Aurora glanced over, frowning in mild disappointment.
“Uh… thank you…?” Her eyebrow arched in confusion because she had never recalled hearing his name.
“The name’s Oliver.” This Oliver character in front of her gave a sly little smile. “It’s a pleasure finally meeting you, princess.”
“You can just call me Aurora.” She jerked her hand free of his grasp, and hid it behind her back.
“Right. My apologies.” Oliver’s eyes idly wandered back to the elderly coyote still sitting behind the table waiting to welcome the next customer. “I didn’t expect you of all people would speak to the likes of a sorry fool like him. Pity he may lose his home.” He gave a a soft scoff, and turned to face Aurora fully. “At least that’s one less rat left among the kingdom, am I right?”
Aurora’s fists balled up at her sides, and she scowled angrily at the disrespectful young male before her. “No. You’re far from being right, pal. No amount of money will make me think less of someone. He deserves more respect than you’re ignorant self will ever understand. If we’re gonna go around calling anyone rats around here…” She took a few steps toward him and jabbed a finger into his chest. “It’s you.” Her nose wrinkled in disgust, “I mean you certainly reek like one.” Before he let him respond, Aurora whirled around - her back facing him now. “Oh! Okay, dad! I’m comin’!” She fibbed, pretending to overhear her father calling her. Without another glance she left him behind. After the stench of his cologne faded Aurora let out a sigh. That probably wasn’t her best way to handle him, but she didn’t really care; there was no reason for his comment toward that kind elderly coyote, and she wasn’t about to let him get away with such actions.
She climbed up the stairs of the palace to rest against a pillar, getting away from the party to calm herself after that outburst with Oliver. She closed her eyes, resting her head against the hard and cold stone-pillar. Her peace and quiet was interrupted by footsteps heading in her direction. She sneaked a peek to see Lancelot at the top of the steps. He had came to the party after all! “It took you long enough.” She stood up and stepped out from behind the pillar for him to see her fully.
“Tch, I came though.”
“Mm… fair enough.” She gave a shrug, and approached him. She eyed over his appearance. He wasn’t dressed in his heavy armor, but instead he wore a black doublet that looked really handsome on him. Aurora couldn’t help but wonder how he had found her in the first place.
Before she could ask, he beat her to it.“If you’re skeptical about how I found you, I had caught a glimpse of you heading this way when I was speaking to Sir Gawain.” His crimson eyes studied her face. “…Is everything okay?”
It was really kind of the knight to ask about her well-being. “Oh, yeah. I’m fine. Just had to deal with a… rat.” His eyebrow arched slightly but she dropped the topic quickly, and pulled out a cookie from her bag. “You should really try these!” She exclaimed in a far more bubbly tone. Lancelot stared at the treat before him, before she shoved it into his mouth, almost causing him to choke. She just erupted into a giggle fit, while patting his back.
Whenever Lancelot was able to speak, he gave soft “ahem” as he tried clearing his throat. “Not bad. Mind if I have another?” Aurora dug into the bag again to grab another cookie for him. “Without trying to choke me, this time.”
-
The sun was beginning to set so everyone made their way inside the palace to continue the party in the decorated ballroom. One of the servants directed everyone to form a circle while a speech was given to honor Sonic’s birthday. Some of the citizens laid some presents before Sonic and took a bow, before returning to their designated spot with the others. Soon, Sonic stepped out in the middle and thanked them all. He gave a short speech before music begun playing and the citizens watched Sonic, his wife, some of the close friends to the royal couple joined along to dance with their sufficient other. The music was upbeat and quick, like the king preferred it until coming to a close and a slower pace of music begun to play. As they were dancing, Aurora caught a glimpse of her mother encouraging her to join them. Oliver must’ve caught on to this and approached Aurora. The nerve of this guy… seriously? As he kneeled before Aurora and reached for her hand, she heard an audible gasp from the citizens near her, and from the corner of her eye she could’ve sword she saw her father tripping over her mother’s foot when he looked over to them. Amy was quick to distract him with a kiss.
“May I have this dance, m’lady?” She’ll humor him for a few minutes, at least. What harm could it do? Heck, she could at least give him a good stomp to his foot without making it look like it was on purpose. She stretched out her hand, accepting his proposal. A smile spread across his face as he lead her to the others. He wasn’t that bad of a dancer, she had to admit.  As they neared a group of girls that were near their age, she saw Oliver winking at them. She was more disgusted than jealous of his flirty actions toward them. Aurora pinched his arm to grab his attention back on where he moved his feet next.
As they rounded a corner at the end of the song, Oliver dipped her and leaned in to peck her on the neck. She wiggled out of his grasp, and shoved him away. When she backed away, she bumped into Lancelot. “That’s enough. It’s my turn to have a dance with the princess.” Relief washed over her, at least she knew Lancelot wouldn’t act so irresponsible.
Oliver looked at Aurora, and then back at the knight. At his hip was a dagger, and he visibly begun to grow pale. He was foolish yet he wasn’t foolish enough to take Lancelot on,he wasn’t about to have a death wish hanging over his head. With a soft huff, Oliver departed and searched for some alcoholic beverages to soothe his “troubles”.
“Well, may I have this dance?” He stretched out his hand, politely. Aurora gave a nod and took his hand. She soon felt his left hand rest on her back as he swayed along with the music. “Was that the rat you were talking about?” He whispered.
“You betcha.” Aurora rolled her eyes, and gripped his hand tighter when the pace of their dance quickened along with the music playing.
Gradually her family members and close friends of her parents left them alone at the dance floor. There was a lot of whispering about the young hedgehogs dancing skillfully together while they watched them. Many thought these two wouldn’t be compatible because of their roles, while others found them quite cute together. Lancelot let go of Aurora, and gave her enough space so she could perform a twirl before the musicians stopped playing. Aurora’s back arched slightly when he dipped her when the room became quiet. “…Wow. I didn’t know you could dance?” She straightened up a little, inches from his face now.
“What can I say? I’m full of surprises.” He replied with a grin, and distanced himself from her.
“Never said it was pleasant, you cocky ‘hog.”
“Oh? You didn’t enjoy yourself? Hm… perhaps you would have preferred dancing with Oliver?”
“Don’t push it.”
In the background Sonic and Amy stood side by side. Sonic was holding a cup of wine that he accidentally spilt all over the servant after coming back to see his daughter dancing with the knight. Amy quickly apologized for his mishap and told him he was dismissed if he wished to change out his outfit. She awkwardly looked back at her daughter and then to her husband, “…well at least he’s not being inappropriate like that other boy.” She knew it was futile to ease his mind right now, no amount of politeness from a male that had an interest in Aurora would keep him calm. “Darling…”
Sonic’s ear twitched when she spoke again, and massaged his shoulders to relieve the tension building. Amy directed to one of the high rank servants to dismiss the party and soon enough everyone started to leave.
“Looks like we started a new topic for more gossiping..” Aurora gave a chuckle as she saw more citizens glance toward them, and whisper to their friends, spouse, and relatives when they made their way out the door.  She wasn’t really surprised at all, but she would have preferred not hearing rumors about herself that were most likely lies.
“Yes, it appears that way…Not that we care. They’ll say things, anyway. Besides, it’s not like we’re romantically interested in each other.” Lancelot gave a subtle shrug. “There’s nothing “juicy” when gossiping about two close friends, am I right?”
Aurora blinked at the knight before her, finding it somewhat hard to say anything else. Was she disappointed that he didn’t have an interest in her romantically? Aurora certainly didn’t feel interested in that sort of way, that’s for sure. At least that’s what she kept telling herself…she was even beginning to doubt whether this was so. “Right. J-just…friends.” Aurora reassured Lancelot, trying her best to smile without looking… hurt.
Light Consorting with Shadows
Chapter 1: Challenge Me
Something about this knight fascinated her. Yes, he was attractive... Oh chaos, very attractive. However, it wasn’t his looks that caught her attention. She couldn’t place her finger on it. Aurora never got many chances to interact with the Knight, which frustrated her. The only occasion she got to see him face-to-face were during formal dinners that took place. What was he like? Other than the rumors she had heard from her parents and the girls that were “love-struck”. Clearly, he was strong and loyal; her father wouldn’t of selected him as head knight if he wasn’t. How about his personality, though? Surely there was more to him than just an attractive hedgehog, and strong fighter. An image of him being inconsiderate came to mind, if that was the case... he wasn’t worth her time. Aurora sighed heavily, and collapsed underneath a shade tree. She was exhausted from her studies, and the restless nights. Hoping a nap would clear her head, she watched the leaves swaying slowly; slowly luring her to sleep.
She was woken up by a butterfly tickling her nose, and the sound of a familiar deep voice. Standing to her feet to stretch out her stiff arms and legs, her ear swiveled in the direction of the source of that distinguish voice. She could vaguely see his silhouette from where she was standing. There were a few other figures standing nearby, but they were now leaving the training field and headed toward the palace. This was her chance. Sprinting toward the opened field where the knights of the roundtable came to train. Lancelot’s back was turned by the time she reached him. As Aurora approached him closer, she noticed he wasn’t wearing his helmet. The first time she would see him without it... interesting. She cleared her throat to get his attention. Immediately, Lancelot looked over his shoulder to see the princess. In panic, he quickly fell on one knee and hung his head. “M’lady, it’s a pleasure to-” Aurora scowled, like her father she wasn’t crazy about being talked to in this way.
“Yeah, yeah. Stand up will you? It’s just you and I. No need to be so formal.” She tapped her foot, impatiently waiting for him to stand again. When he did so, he cleared his throat awkwardly. Crimson eyes locked with her emerald gaze, sending a shiver down her spine. He was captivating, indeed. “So, I don’t think we’ve met properly yet?” She took a few steps closer, her hands folded behind her back. “Everyone says you’re great fighter...”
A sly grin graced his features, “what you say is true.” Ah, she was really stroking his ego now. It was time to change that.
“Show me what you got, then.” Aurora now stood inches from the knight, causing him to take a few steps back in surprise.
“Wha-”
“I challenge you to a fight. You aren’t afraid are you?”
“No, of course not! But I don’t think we should...fight.”
“You’re saying that because I’m a woman, aren’t you?” Aurora’s quills bristled in anger. Whether or not he meant to sound offensive, she was more than ready to prove him that she was more than capable. She took a sword from where it laid within it’s sheath. Drawing out her weapon, she pressed the blade against Lancelot’s chin. “I have you to know I know a thing or two about fighting with a sword.” From the corner of her eye, she noticed him reaching for his own weapon. Although Lancelot appeared to be hesitant, he wasn’t going to argue with the princess when there was no way he’d win. She was persistent, and he admired that.
-
“Y-you’re not bad, after all.” Both were breaking out in a pant from the intense feud. Quite frankly, Aurora never actually got to fight this hard with a sword of her own. It was nice. She wiped her brow, her bangs drenched with sweat. Crouching infront of her, Lancelot was still catching his breath. A devious gleam in her eye sparked, and she charged forward.
Lancelot was taken off guard, yet quick enough to react to his “opponent’s” attack. He evaded just in time before the blade made contact with his shoulder. Unfortunately for Aurora, once her attack was avoided she lost her footing. Before she hit the pavement, a firm grasp on her arm helped her upright and turned her around to face him, arms wrapping around her waist.Heat rushed to her face and ear tips. Up close, she felt his metallic armor that protected his chest, and stomach. She could also get a whiff of his scent, and to her surprise it was... pleasant despite being a little sweaty. “Uh... I guess you win this round, hm?”
“... If you like, we can call it a tie.” The corner of his mouth twitched into a grin. “You impressed me, I’ll admit.” Aurora’s eyebrow arched slightly when he said this. The compliment was nice, instead of the negative comments she’d received from her combat trainer. Even if Lancelot might’ve been nice simply because she was royalty, it meant a lot to her.
“Oh yeah? Well-” The sound of footsteps and a cry of pain interrupted her from rambling on. Both her and Lancelot turned around to see her father there with a dagger piercing his left shoe. The dagger had slipped out of his grasp the second he saw how close his daughter and Lancelot standing so close. Quickly, they distanced themselves, widening the gap that once was absent. “Dad... ?” She glanced down at his foot, and looked back at his face in concern.
“I-I’m fine. I’m... f...ffine.” He pulled out the dagger, blood stains were on the blade.
“Sire, I think you should get that checked out.” Lancelot withdrew his weapon and took a step toward the king, willing to help back to the castle.
“NO! I said I was fine! What in the world were you doing with my daughter?!” He took a step toward them, and immediately regretted it as pain shot from his left foot throughout his whole body. Bless his soul for trying though. He limped closer to Lancelot, and aimed the bloody dagger at him. His hand shook as he held it close to the knight’s face. “I swear if you...try...anything-” From the blood lose, the pain, and the panic attack he experienced after he saw those two he totally lost consciousness and fell in Lancelot’s arms. Not a swell way to end his rant, at all.
