3. I'm tryibg to find a wonderful Wangxian fic i read a few months ago, which I don't seem to have bookmarked or saved. Wei Ying & Lan Zhan travel one of the Silk Road caravan routes all the way to the outpost near the Jade Gate. I think Wei Ying was the one who wanted to go there, but he was vague about why. There are all kind of sub plots going on - i think some of the Wen are blending in out there, there's also a bit about ghosts (i think) of the Tarim Basin mummies - one of their resting places was violated. I’m looking for a fic I read some time ago (can’t even say I liked it, just in the mood). It was a modern AU where WWX and JC are raising JL together, but have to work at a sex line (JC) and strip club (WWX, not sure about this one) to make ends meet (there was also a scene of JL finding out). Then, they bump into the Lan brothers in separate incidents the same day and give them their cards.

That’s most of what I remember, I hope you can find the fic for me (tried all the filters on AO3, couldn’t find it).

Thank you, but it is not this one. JC's work at a sex line was much more prominent there, and the story did not start with the Lan brothers as this one does.

Wei Wuxian accidentally lets slip that Lan Xichen called him a mistake during the whole temple thing, and Sizhui and Lan Wangji get upset and end up confronting Lan Xichen. I remember there was a seen where Wei Wuxian recited everything Lan Xichen said to him to Lan Wangji. It points out how unfair it was to expect Wei Wuxian to realize Lan Wangji was in love with him, and that even if he did, he shouldn't be expected to drop everything je was doing (you know, like protecting the Wens) just to make Lan Wangji "happy."

Set during the time skip and then postcanon. Some Lan elders took advantage of LWJ's punishment to sexualy abuse him, taking him out of the cold cave blindfolded once a month. Afterwards, warmth was a trauma trigger and he only felt comfortable with the younger generation of Lans because he knew they were too young to have been involved. After canon and getting together with wwx he has a breakdown after realising that sex isn't suposed hurt and goes to sleep outside soaking wet so he can feel cold.

Thanks for asking! For those following along at home, this is in reference to this post. So the file with that name is the long-promised sequel to And these are all for you; basically, there was this question that Wei Wuxian in that fic had for Lan Wangji (these characters have minds of our own): “Is there anything alpha-Wei-Wuxian has that you want? Like, that you want from me as an alpha, not just—Wei Wuxian?” That discussion ended up not fitting/making sense in the original fic, but I thought it was a really interesting question, and I still wanted to talk about it! Even more so when it turned out the answer was going to lead to some top-notch smut. 😂 It’s still in rough draft, but here’s the first scene (which does not contain top-notch or any other smut, alas):

Wei Wuxian has many flaws. And one of the big ones is that he just cannot leave well enough alone.

Here he is, in Lan Zhan’s bed, in Lan Zhan’s arms, with the moonlight filtering in—and instead of gratefully drifting off to sleep, he has to open his stupid mouth.

“Lan Zhan…”

“Mn?”

“When I asked what I provide for you.”

Beat.

“The—joy, and challenge, and purpose… those are all things… anybody could provide.”

“No,” Lan Zhan says immediately. He does not raise his voice, but it’s definitive like a closing door.

And… yeah, that wasn’t the best way to put it.

“Not anybody,” Wei Wuxian amends. “But—those weren’t things that—that an alpha, specifically, would give you.”

Beat.

“Mn,” Lan Zhan says – one of his “mn”s of agreement.

“And I… and that’s okay, obviously! I just, ah.” Beat. “I want to—this is stupid, but I—do you like that I’m an alpha? Do you care about it at all?” He doesn’t even know what answer he wants.

Beat. Lan Zhan does him the courtesy of considering it.

“I do not think I understand the question,” he says carefully.

That’s fair.

“I guess I mean… it doesn’t seem like you’re thinking I’ll… provide for you, like, materially. The way an alpha traditionally would. Which is good because I can’t,” and that hurts to admit, which is where part of this is coming from. “But do you—is there anything alpha-Wei-Wuxian has that you want? Like, that you want from me as an alpha, not just—Wei Wuxian who’s your mate?”

That’s probably not any more coherent than the last question, but Lan Zhan seems to understand it anyway. He nods and says, “Mn.”

Wary, hopeful. “Yeah? Really?” Well, Lan Zhan wouldn’t have said it if it wasn’t true, he knows that. What he really wants to ask is: “Um, what is it?”

“Wei Ying’s knot.”

Beat where WWX is light-headed. They didn’t do anything sexy tonight because Lan Zhan was still worn out from his heat, but wow. Wow.

“Wei Ying’s rut.”

Is it hot in here?

“And…” LWJ’s eyes cut to the side. “Wei Ying’s get. If Wei Ying is willing.”

WWX just about explodes. He wasn’t expecting that at all. He hides his face. “Lan Zhan! You’ve already given me one beautiful son. How can I ask for more?”

“Wei Ying does not ask. I ask.” Beat. “Only if—if it would bring Wei Ying joy.”

Beat.

“You’re serious.”

“Mn.”

Soft, disbelieving. “You really… you really want to bear for me?”

“I want to bear and raise children with Wei Ying.”

Beat.

“Well, I… I guess that’s something I can provide.” Wei Wuxian is kind of chuffed by that. He can give Lan Zhan a baby! That’s pretty good! Then the doubt creeps in. “Unless—I don’t know,” he realizes. “I don’t know if I can, I can’t imagine all that resentful energy is good for—what if I can’t? What if I can’t even give you that?” Quick beat of WWX self-worth spiraling. “If I can’t even give you a child, you have to—you have to find another mate—”

“No.”

“Lan Zhan—”

“If you cannot sire a child, we will get one the traditional way.”

“The traditional way?!”

“Adopt an orphan we meet on the streets of Yiling.”

BEAT – WWX GETS IT.

“Lan Zhan, stop being so funny! This isn’t a joke—”

“You would care for the child?”

“Of course I would—”

“Feed them, bathe them, keep them from harm?”

“Of course—”

“Give them your love – embrace them and praise them and teach them right from wrong?”

“I don’t know if I’m qualified to do that last part.”

“But you would try?”

Quick beat. Muttered: “I would try.”

Satisfied: “Wei Ying provides well for our family.”

Our family.

“Lan Zhan!” WWX wails.

Lan Zhan makes no retort – just radiates smugness. He thinks he’s won, apparently.

He probably has.

It’s not like Wei Wuxian can deny him anything.

“Wei Ying should sleep,” Lan Zhan rumbles. “His rut is coming.” MEANINGFUL STROKE. “He will need his strength.”

Wei Wuxian shivers. “Shameless,” he mutters.

But he’s pretty sure Lan Zhan means it. So he curls up against Lan Zhan’s side again and tries to sleep. It doesn’t take long.

Eventually Lan Wangji will realize that his brother set this up, and will think of some way to get back at him, possibly by spending three years being stubborn in a cave or maybe by chopping an arm off of someone his brother cares about.

This is A+ Yibo fanservice but it's also a male-male version of a trope that's ubiquitous in c-drama, in which the male lead takes a bath and the female lead sees him. The purpose of the scene is almost always so a woman can look a man’s body over and decide, not to put too fine a point on it, whether she wants to fuck him.

Women’s sexual agency is not often at the forefront in c-dramas, but the bathtub scenes are an acknowledgement of the female gaze, and of male objects of desire being subject to evaluation & approval.

As a CGI artist I have to mention that water does not reflect or refract 100% of light. If you look at a naked dingle-having person in a bathtub full of clear water you will definitely be able to see their dingle. But C-drama water is magic and nothing is visible below the waterline, to the point that Bai Yu is modestly covering his thoracic surgery scar chest in Detective L while leaving his lower half uncovered.

Seen in this context, The Untamed’s two bathing scenes are saying quite a lot. Wei Wuxian, being a boy, doesn’t display any female-encoded shyness or modesty, but he and his sword pause for a moment of admiration.

Wei Wuxian invites him to visit Lotus Pier sometime (see my gifset here), but the promise of lotus pods doesn’t impress him. Then Wei Wuxian tries to tell him that the Yunmeng chicks really knock me out, they leave the rest behind. This also doesn’t impress him.

You could read this macking-on-ladies talk as a sign that Wei Wuxian is oblivious to LWJ's feelings for him. But I read it as a bisexual boy being horny on main with a boy he likes, not understanding yet that some boys don’t share all of his turn-ons.

Lan Wangji is sort of mildly startled when Wei Wuxian disappears under the water. His eye makeup is good here, isn’t it?.

Ice Cave

They end up in an ice cave and both spend the rest of the episode showing how good they look with wet hair.

When the guqin starts attacking, Lan Wangji is only mildly perturbed about Wei Wuxian getting his shit rocked over and over.

Eventually he sends Bichen to protect his very bedraggled date. Lan Wangji’s sword is faster than the speed of a very slow sound wave.

I feel like there are a couple of things in this show that are so problematic the fandom has silently agreed to never discuss them. Well, I’m here to talk about this one:

There are rabbits in this ice cave and they are wearing headbands. HEADbands. On RABBits.

EXCELLENT FUCKING QUESTION, LAN WANGJI

Are these rabbits lineal Lan descendants? Who makes the headbands? How do they stay on because “headband” here means “glowing cloud on forehead” without any actual band. When rabbit babies are born, how do they stay safe while they’re waiting for someone to make them baby-sized headbands? Do these rabbits adhere to the other 3499 Lan Clan principles or just the headband one? Is any ol' rabbit allowed to touch a rabbit’s headband or is it limited to parents and significant others and is that even relevant when presumably these bunnies are all fucking each other like...bunnies?

The characters are like “oh, the rabbits are wearing headbands; killer guqin problem solved.” And then they move right the fuck along with their lives and the rabbit headbands are never seen or discussed again and I just want a hit of whatever the author or creative team was smoking when they came up with this whole idea.

Yanli is excused from PE class because she’s not feeling well, so she sits on a rock in the woods instead of, you know, staying home in the first place. She gets bored sitting down and unwisely decides to walk two or three steps. Xuan Lu, seen here competing in a gymnastics event, gamely pretends she can’t climb a small rock.

Xue Chonghai was the most problematic cultivator back in the old days. He killed a lot of dudes and fed their resentment to...a turtle? To the disk? I don’t know; I literally am unable to pay attention when anyone is explaining the intricacies of the unobtanium Yin Iron.

Anyway there’s a disk and it’s soaked up a lot of resentment.

Using it makes people evil. Well except..clearly this dude started off evil, yeah? If he was feeding people to his turtle.

Here Wei Wuxian brings out his "resentful energy is awesome" theory and has an experienced grown-up grand master tell him that she also thought this, and has spent 100 years locked in a cave with headband-wearing rabbits because she was super fucking wrong. Does this deter him? ...nope

Baoshan Sanren

Now she name checks Baoshan Sanren, and Wei Wuxian has a big reaction and Lan Wangji has a big noticing of Wei Wuxian’s reaction. He’s very attuned to Wei Wuxian’s emotional state, in the moments where WWX lets his actual feelings show through the sass and swagger.

Lan Gran talks about her search for the Yin iron, and Lan Wangji wisely says, if you can't neutralize it, why look for it? And she says, I was filled with hubris just like ya boi Wei Wuxian. Lan Wangji points out the exact same shit he will later point out to Wei Wuxian.

So now we have a parallel in which Lan Yi is just like Wei Wuxian and Baoshan Sanren is just like Lan Wangji, yeah? Which is kind of sweet; it shows how these types are drawn together and how your clan doesn't determine your personality. Also it shows how the Lan clan has room for an unorthodox clan leader. Also it shows how the Yin Iron causes some really bad breakups.

These boys are standing on snow barefoot which has got to take a pretty high cultivation level. Look how short Lan Wangji is without his stilettos, aww.

Flashback to Baoshan Sanren, just long enough to appreciate how beautiful she is.

Did OP give up on recoloring that flashback-blue-hazed image and just start fucking around with random filters? Yes she did.

We also get to see that Lan Yi and Lan Wangji have more common than just guqin, because they both like to solve problems by kicking them.

So after breaking up with her girlfriend, Lan Gran became invisible in this cave for 100 years while trying to contain the Yin iron and put headbands on rabbits.

"dad are you okay?"

"who are you?"

"Uhm- you're son?"

"You are not, My Jingyi is not here. He is in the dorm! It's late, he is not allowed to go out late! " he retorted childishly, giving out the poutiest of all pouts which Jingyi thought was quit cute for someone who mostly wears a scowl 24/7.

"In the dorm.." JC repeated, face slowly twisting to cry again, His lower lip trembed as he mumbled his next words,

"Away from his parents.

Away from me."

His Dad, cried like a little child after.

"D-dad stop crying.." Jingyi sat in the floor next to JC, wiping off every tear that falls from his Dad's eyes.

"My Jingyi! I miss my Jingyi!

I want to see my Jingyi."

"Dad I am here.", he told JC, now combing his hair gently.

JC either ignored what he said or was too busy being emotional to actually hear his son but he suddenly sat up and look like he had an idea , he grab the hem of Jingyi's sweater, "Let's go to his dorm. Please .." he pleaded with puppy dog eyes.

Seriously, his parents are like children when drunk, thought Jingyi and facepalms internally.

"Dad.."

Suddenly he heard something fell on the kitchen which startled both him and JC. His Papa!

"Dad wait here. I'll go check on Papa. I'll get you water too."

JC nods like a little kid, pouting.

When Jingyi reached the kitchen, he was greeted with the most ridiculous scene he has ever seen with his Papa. His respectable CEO Papa.

LXC was standing near a counter covered in flour and chocolate syrup.

"Papa what are you doing? "

"baking?" It sounded more like a question than an answer to Jingyi because LXC wasn't sure how to do what he was trying to do.

"Aissshh! Let's go take a bath. "

He grabs LXC's hand and drags him out the kitchen.

"but I want to bake Jiang Wanyin cupcakes! Oh and his son too! I want to marry Jiang Wanyin and be the father of his son.

"You don't even know how to cook!"

When they reached the living room, JC was already gone.

"Where is dad?"

At the corner of his eyes , Jingyi noticed his room door was open. He walk straight there pulling the teary eyed Lan Xichen.

" I want to cook for Wanyin." He complain.

Standing from the door. Jingyi saw JC laying on his bed, sleeping peacefully.

" I have to help dad change in his pajamas later" he mentally told himself, smiling lovingly at his Dad's direction.

He went to get his papa in the bath after.

"oh! Bath! " LXC exclaimed excitedly when they reached the tub and saw Jingyi running the tap.

He immediately took off all of his clothes in front of Jingyi who was kneeling beside the tub and his thing was directly right at Jingyi's horror-stricken face, greeting him of it's shaven glory.

Jingyi is now scarred for life.

After making sure LXC was already cleaned up and ready for bed he went to his dad , woke him up, then helped him change.

He succesfully got them both to bed that night but when he was about to leave them to get in his own room he was pulled by both and despite the sleepiness overtaking them again, both father was able to muster a soft "goodnight A-yi" .

Jingyi can't helped but smile, as he hugged his parents back.

He missed them so much.
