One of the recurring themes in Margiela's oeuvre is duct tape, Together with paint, cardboard and other DIY materials. Tape has been used to make artisanal pieces, to cover models' eyes for anonimity, to 'glue together' tabi boots and it served here as inspiration for this FW2008 jumper. Thick black laminated paint has been applied to the front of the jumper, following the shape of the letter M. The paint is threedimensional, suggesting airbubbles or creases, again emphasising the idea of duct tape. The fit is oversized, one of the few larger pieces we have. Worn in t-shirt version for the FW2008 lookbook, of which some pictures were included as well as a snapshot of the presentation where models held garments they wore printed cardboard in front of them. #margiela #margiela10 #menswear #grailed https://www.instagram.com/p/ClYqsMdDAph/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Mixing epochs research
Moving away from the 'hyper nature' trend, I decided to research 'mixing epochs', as I was interested in the more eclectic style and the idea of combining modern and retro furnishings. As this trend is quite broad and could be interpreted in a number of different ways, I chose to focus on 2 interior styles that WGSN mentioned (Memphis and mid century), whilst incorporating elements of more contemporary design.
I was already somewhat familiar with, and like the mid century aesthetic so I decided to begin by researching that. The term 'mid century modern' was coined by art historian Cara Greenberg in the title of her 1984 book about furniture in the 1950s, and is now widely used to describe architecture, graphic design and interiors from the middle of the 20th century (around 1933-1965). The mid century style began in the form of architecture in America, as a response to the 'Bauhaus' movement that was happening across Europe at the time, with Palm Springs in California being at the forefront of the trend.

The key elements of mid century design include a focus on functionality and the contrast of clean, geometric lines and more organic shapes. Examples of this include American designers, Charles and Ray Eames' creation of the DSR and lounge chairs, which became mid century classics. In the UK, brands such as G-Plan and Ercol also evidenced this by producing stream lined, wooden furniture often with 'hairpin' legs.

After researching mid century design, I chose to look at the Memphis style of the 1980s, which came about due to a group of designers in Milan (headed by Ettore Sottsass) who joined together to form a 'design collective'. These designers disliked the simplicity and neutral colours of the 50s and 60s modernism and wanted to produce a more futuristic style of furniture, fabric and accessories inspired by the art deco and pop art movements. Their focus was on bright clashing colours and strong geometric patterns, favouring materials such as plastic laminate and terrazzo.

I feel that these chairs from the university building café can be seen to have both mid century and memphis influences, as the use of brightly coloured plastic is very typical of memphis design, creating a a glossy eye-catching finish. Whilst they're clearly not traditionally mid century, I also feel that these chairs take influence from mid century design, as their curved shape has similarities to the Eames DSR chair.

For further primary research I went to a second hand furniture store near me and found lots of examples of original mid century pieces, including side boards, a dining table and chair set, and a writing desk all made from teak wood. I also took pictures of a lamp and overhead ceramic light shade which are original mid century pieces that I felt were examples of lighting I could incorporate in my lookbook.

This week Bjarke Ingels discussed how to revolutionise the housing sector
This week on Dezeen, Danish architect Bjarke Ingels spoke about his housing startup Nabr and how it plans to address "systemic" failures of housing.
According to Ingels, who is the founder of architecture studio BIG and co-founder of Nabr, the "consumer-first housing company" wants to fundamentally transform the housing industry.
Nabr will do so by designing mass-timber blocks using modular construction, which will feature customisable apartments plugged into a cross-laminated structural timber frame.
"This is basically an attempt to apply design, not just to the final product, but to the entire process that delivers our homes," Ingels told Dezeen in an exclusive interview.
Thomas Heatherwick unveils 1,000 Trees shopping centre in Shanghai
In other architecture news, British designer Thomas Heatherwick's studio unveiled 1,000 Trees in Shanghai, its latest project to open to the public. The shopping centre is covered in over 1,000 trees and 250,000 plants and was designed to resemble a mountain clad in greenery.
In an interview with Dezeen, Heatherwick explained that the design was "driven by making something that we hope is engaging people."
"I think the 100,000 people a day are proof that we all need places that trigger a response," he said.
However, in an opinion piece written for Dezeen, architect Philip Oldfield argued that the carbon costs of creating 1,000 Trees outweigh the environmental benefit.
House in The Girl Before designed to feel both like a sanctuary and "a fortress or prison"
This week, we also peeked inside the house in BBC television series The Girl Before, speaking to production designer Jon Henson about how he created a house that acts "like a fourth character" in the four-part series.
Henson referenced Japanese architecture when designing the house and was drawn in particular to Gosize's F Residence in the Japanese prefecture of Hygo, which was featured on Dezeen in 2019.
Architects should try to "leave the city more beautiful than when we entered" says Richard Rogers
In celebration of architect Richard Rogers, who passed away in December, we republished a series of interviews that Dezeen filmed with Rogers in 2013. In the six movies, Rogers discusses his work, starting with an interview in which he speaks of architects' responsibilities to society.
Other films look at Rogers' design for the Centre Pompidou, the backlash to the Lloyds building in London, how the design of the Leadenhall building was informed by views of St Paul's Cathedral and Rogers' hopes for his legacy.
Peelsphere is a leather-alternative biomaterial made from fruit waste and algae
In design news this week, designer Youyang Song showcased Peelsphere, a biodegradable plant-based material made from fruit peels and algae that was designed as an alternative to leather. The waterproof material can be used to create accessories or bags.
Nottingham furniture designer Mac Collins was named the winner of the inaugural Ralph Saltzman Prize for emerging designers, a new award presented by the Design Museum that aims to "champion new talent and nurture the development of a vibrant design sector".
Salone del Mobile expected to move to 7-12 June due to Covid-19 concerns
As the coronavirus pandemic continues to affect architecture and design events, we revealed that Salone del Mobile, the world's biggest and most important furniture fair, is set to announce that it will be held in June instead of April this year according to multiple sources.
Our guide to the twenty-five best design weeks and festivals for 2022 is an up-to-date overview of when design events will take place this year.
Sou Fujimoto Architects designs walkable rooftop for rural Japanese university
Among the most popular projects this week were a university with a walkable roof designed by Sou Fujimoto, a theatre with a multi-faceted red auditorium, and a Tehran office building wrapped in a brick-clad "second skin."
This week's lookbooks focused on kitchen extensions that make spacious additions to homes and interiors featuring verdant indoor trees.

• 4»: FILM: DZHUS AW21 Video Lookbook: SURROGATE
Designer Irina Dzhus is very familiar with the perfectionist urge to "clone oneself", and the message of the new season has derived from a rhetorical dilemma: is a prototype self-sufficient without a copy, or are those undividable, like and object and its shadow, a form and a counter-form? Replicas and duplicates imitate the original, generating a train of phantomic projections, resembling a freeze of its dynamics. Such synthesis forms a polyphase existence with an unlimited kinetic potential.
The idea of an object’s stratification as a way to push boundaries of its utility has implemented in a repetitive pattern of identical details. DZHUS has developed such hybrid styles as shorts/top, shirt/skirt, hat/waistcoat/hood/peplum and a line of bags modifiable into a cardigan, a coat, trousers, bustier, sleeve, jacket and other apparel categories. The variety of bags in the collection is symbolical, and their shape pays honour to recognisable types of packaging, as DZHUS continues to motivate for recycling and choice of reusable containers.
The materials used have distinct textures: shape-keeping pleating, cotton with a crumpled or laminated finish, silk imitating sackcloth or featuring an optical illusion of "petrol" stains, ribbed knits. The textiles’ ethical origin is the determinant criterium for DZHUS’ material sourcing, as the brand transmits the values of cruelty-free fashion.

Décor Ideas to Glam Up Your Living Space
Your living space is a reflection of your personality and that is one of the prime reasons to put in all the efforts to make it look amazing. After all, the majority of your time is going to be spent at the comfort of your own home. But decorating it can be a stressful situation because there are only a fixed number of things that can be done to create an appealing space. For example, a good idea is to make effective use of Decorative Laminate Sheets. Not only they give a fantastic finish to your place, but also exhibit properties such as durability, scratch resistance, easy maintenance, etc.

So, whether you are decorating a new home, or renovating your old one, here are some tips on how to create your own glamorous living space:
Choose a focal point:
This will be the first thing where anyone’s eye will fall when they walk into the room. A focal point of the room can be created with anything; a beautiful stand, a large painting, etc. Currently, people prefer using High Defination Decorative Laminates in India at one spot to give a fresh feel to this old concept.
Spend on quality products:
Whatever you use in your home, you would want it to stay for a long time. To ensure this, invest in quality products only. Before deciding on what should be the look and feel of the room, play around with different designs. For example, CenturyLaminates has introduced its LookBook, through which you can go through various Laminate designs before choosing the best one for your home.
Make room lighting lively:
A big stress for any decoration project is how to create a balance between natural and artificial lights. The right kind of light will create a positive atmosphere, hence it is quite important. You can use different kinds such as overhead and accent lights in order to create a room where the ambience can be adjusted. If properly applied on the edge of the furniture, LED lights can create quite a soothing ambience at your place.
Decorating your room is important so it feels like every corner has an agenda. A properly decked room could make you feel comfortable, or homely, or even inspired. Make your home a place you feel happy coming back to.

Formica Looks to Nature for Its Layered Sand Laminate
Just recently, Formica officially launched their new SurfaceSet 2020 collection, a series of 30 designs that blur lines between nature and technology. One of those Formica® Laminate designs had us intrigued – Layered Sand – as the finished product is the result of layering actual sand before scanning it to make a new optical visual. For this month’s Deconstruction, Formica takes us further into the Layered Sand design to see the lengthy process they go through to create each pattern.
WATCH:
youtube
Photo: Copyright jakobradlgruber via 123rf.com
The natural beauty of sand has colored the world since the beginning of time.
But it wasn’t until the early 20th century — when sand art was discovered in the Middle East – that layered sand became a design fixture.
Since then, the granular design has inspired designers and architects to capture sand’s organic elegance and transform it into large-scale rammed earth designs.
Inspired by this type of architecture, Formica Group has created a strong and durable laminate option with a sand-like finish for horizontal and vertical surfaces.
The process begins when artists create a sandscape by hand to mimic the building process of rammed earth walls.
First, a wood frame is built to fit the sizing needed for a laminate design.
Next, various sizes and colors of sand grains are poured into linear bands and pressed into layers.
The sandscape is then turned into an optical-solid visual using a high definition scanner.
Using proprietary reproduction techniques, Formica Group turns the scanned image into 3-4 print layers, or separations.
Each print layer is a different color, and when combined, creates a pleasing design that showcases the pattern.
Then, full layouts are reviewed by the Formica Group technical and design team for approval and revisions.
Upon final approval of the design layout, Formica Group then begins the digital colorwork. This allows the design team to test different color combinations of the pattern while also giving direction to the printing team.
When the final colors are decided, the inks are mixed, printed onto base paper, and then pressed with a honed Scovato texture to create an authentic, sand-like textured laminate.
The final product is a gorgeous laminate surface ideal for any setting.

Ten striking fireplaces at the heart of the home
As winter is approaching in the northern hemisphere, for our latest lookbook we have rounded up ten unusual fireplaces that add both visual interest and warmth to their surroundings.
Included in the roundup is a fireplace that doubles as a staircase, a fireplace that took its design cues from a Venetian tomb and a campfire-inspired fireplace within a cave-like home.
This is the latest roundup in our Dezeen Lookbook series providing visual inspiration for the home. Previous articles in the series showcased domestic gyms, cross-laminated interiors, exposed brickwork and hotels with a bohemian feel.
