Dodgers Advance to World Series
The Los Angeles Dodgers could learn Tonight who they’ll face in the World Series after they won their first National League pennant since 1988 with a 4-1 series victory over the world champion Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
The Dodgers will open the World Series Tuesday at Dodger Stadium, facing either the New York Yankees or the Houston Astros.
Game 6 of the American League Championship Series is this evening in Houston with the Yankees leading the best-of-seven series three games to two.
Manager Dave Roberts said Clayton Kershaw will pitch for the Dodgers in the first World Series game at Dodger Stadium.  Since on Oct. 16, 1988, when Orel Hershiser, now a Dodger broadcaster, pitched a three-hit shutout in a 6-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics.
“We’ve heard 1988 for so long in LA, it feels good to say that we’re getting to go to the World Series in 2017,” said Kershaw, who has been with the Dodgers since 2008.
“When you’re a kid, you just hope you make it to the big leagues so to get to go say you’re going to go play in the World Series, it’s an incredibly special moment. Up there with getting married and having kids, it’s right up there with one of the best days of my life.”
Starting shortstop Corey Seager, who was left off the 25-player roster for the National League Championship Series because of a back injury, is expected to return for Game 1 of the World Series, Roberts said.
Kike Hernandez hit three home runs, including a third-inning grand slam, Thursday as the Dodgers won the National League Championship Series four games to one, ending the longest pennant drought in franchise history.
“All year long it’s been a collection of guys, and certain guys stepping up.” Roberts said. “Every single night it’s somebody else. Tonight was his night to shine.”
This was the 11th time a player hit three home runs in a postseason game. Hernandez was the fourth Dodger to hit a grand slam in a postseason game, joining Dusty Baker and Ron Cey (both 1977) and James Loney (2008), according to ESPN Stats & Info.
Cody Bellinger and Charlie Culberson also both had three hits as part of the Dodgers 16-hit attack.
Chris Taylor and Justin Turner were selected as the co-MVPs of the series. Kershaw limited the Cubs to three hits over six innings and struck out five for his sixth postseason victory, tying Burt Hooton for the team record. Chicago was held to one hit over the final three innings by three Dodger relievers.
Hernandez drove in seven runs with a solo homer in the second and a two- run homer in the ninth in addition to the grand slam during the five-run third.
The Dodgers, who never trailed, opening the scoring in the first when Bellinger doubled in Taylor, who walked.
Turner singled in Taylor, who doubled leading off the third.
Logan Forsythe doubled in Bellinger, who singled, and Yasiel Puig, who reached first on a fielder’s choice, in the fourth.
Kris Bryant homered in the bottom of the fourth for Chicago’s lone run.
Cubs starter Jose Quintana was charged with the loss, allowing six runs and six hits in two innings. He was relieved by Hector Rondon after each of the first four Dodger batters reached base in the third.
Rondon struck out Forsythe, the first batter he faced, then allowed Hernandez’s grand slam.
“The better team won over the course of these five games,” Chicago manager Joe Maddon said. “They played really well. They kind of outpitched us and everything else.”
Celebrations broke out following the victory, including a large group that gathered at Whittier Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue in East Los Angeles. Los Angeles City Hall and the U.S. Bank Tower were among the downtown Los Angeles buildings lit in blue.
“The Dodgers embody everything we love about L.A. — the grit, resilience, teamwork and talent that have built our city into one of the world’s most extraordinary places,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said.
“Only four wins stand between us and the championship that Angelenos have been waiting to bring home for a generation. I can’t wait to lose my voice cheering for this team in the Fall Classic.”

Home Run: Buffalo’s Connections to America’s Pastime
October is notable for three things – autumn, Halloween and Major League Baseball’s postseason. I’m a Dodger Blue-bleeding baseball junkie, so the playoffs consume me for the entire month. Buffalo is well-known as the home of the Bills and Sabres, of course, but our connection to the national pastime is also strong, even in the absence a major league club.
First and foremost, Buffalo’s baseball fans spend their summers at Coca-Cola Field rooting for the Bisons, the AAA affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Notable Jays who cut their teeth here include Aaron Sanchez, Marcus Stroman, Ryan Goins and Kevin Pillar. Seeing players before they become stars, particularly at the AAA level, is one of the many charms of minor league baseball.
Another Buffalo connection to The Show is more subtle, but just as important – the baseball cap. New Era Cap, founded and still based in Buffalo, is the official cap supplier of Major League Baseball. While you’re watching the World Series, check out the right side of any player’s lid and you’ll see the New Era logo stitched on it. And you can have one of these caps for your very own if you visit their stunning Flagship Store in downtown Buffalo.
Baseball is also terrific movie fodder. One of the finest sports films (and finest films, period, in my opinion) was made right here in Buffalo – The Natural. This epic telling of the classic Bernard Malamud novel follows the rise, fall and redemption of Roy Hobbs, an aging slugger who turns around the woeful New York Knights and leads them to the pennant. Buffalo was chosen as it’s location because War Memorial Stadium, a WPA-era ballpark, visually matched the 1930s setting of the movie.
Finally, Buffalo has a direct connection to the current World Series clubs. Dave Roberts (a Buffalo Baseball Hall of Famer) and Justin Turner from the Dodgers and Houston’s Francisco Liriano and Collin McHugh all spent time with the Bisons in the past. So while you’re watching the games, keep an eye out for these former Buffalonians. Turner will be hard to miss – Mr. Red October will hopefully power the Dodgers to their seventh world championship! #ThisTeam  #LALovesOctober  #LetsGoBuffalo

I cried happy tears when the Dodgers went up 2-1 in the NLCS. I thought for the first time in my life, they were actually going to the series. Baseball was the first sport I loved, but it hasn't done anything for me besides hurt me mentally and physically. I actually thought about trying to walk on for my university's team, but I didn't even try because my rotator cuff is fucked up to the point where if I throw the ball even 80% it hurts. And now with the dodgers an inning and a half from being knocked out, it's over for me man. I'm never going to get my hopes up about baseball again.

Dodgers Headed to the Playoffs with Home Field Advantage
The Los Angeles Dodgers won't have to start a series away from Dodger Stadium on the road to the World Series this year.
As Major League Baseball noted on Twitter, the Dodgers clinched home-field advantage in the National League playoffs with Tuesday's 9-2 victory over the San Diego Padres. Los Angeles is now 101-57 and cannot finish behind the Washington Nationals in the race for the NL's top seed.
The Dodgers already clinched the NL West title for the fifth year in a row, but a trip to the Fall Classic would mark a break from their recent postseason struggles. They lost in the NL Division Series twice and the NL Championship Series twice in the last four years and haven't won a title since 1988.
While the Dodgers will be starting their series in familiar territory throughout the NLCS, they actually finished 2-3 at home and 3-3 on the road in last season's playoffs and won the decisive Game 5 against the Nationals in the NLDS in Washington.
Despite Tuesday's lopsided score, the Dodgers found themselves trailing 2-1 in the fifth inning after Christian Villanueva and Hunter Renfroe each hit home runs for the Padres. Los Angeles' offense exploded from there, as Yasmani Grandal's three-run long ball gave it the lead for good before Adrian Gonzalez and Corey Seager added insurance with home runs.
The one thing remaining for Los Angeles to clinch is home-field advantage in a potential World Series against the Cleveland Indians or Houston Astros. Cleveland is 98-59, while Houston is 97-60, and each team can mathematically catch the Dodgers down the stretch if the NL West victors go into a short tailspin.
