Sorry if this is a weird question, but I was wondering what are some of your favorite DP fics?

(You don't have to answer if you don't want to, I was just curious. It can be really fun to see what kind of fics other people like.🙂🙂)

Thank you so much for asking! I've thought about this ask a lot since I got it and man, is this a hard question. I've literally read probably thousands of DP fics so it's really hard to pick! I decided to highlight some older stories and ones that were really impactful in developing my writing.

Passageway by @ladylynse : This is one of the first stories that I remember finding and reading on Tumblr and definitely a big reason I started reading and then writing fanfiction. Also by this author, Anomaly Because I really love anything having to do with clones.

Smokescreen by Nylah and Memories by Happylief : These two stories with their unwitting clone narrators are the reason that my story "Hope Can be a Heavy Thing to Hold" exists. The ending of Smokescreen has/ is providing inspiration for my Invisobang story.

Other stories by Happylief- Candlelight and Nexus . Candlelight is No One Knows au from Sam's pov as she becomes friends with Phantom. Major Amethyst Ocean feels. And Nexus is mindbending time travel weirdness. I can't even explain but it's so good!

Take Pride in Your Humanity by LunagaleMaster: This story! This story made me realize the amazing character exploration you can do using the ghost catcher. Its characterization is on point with so many interesting headcanons. You guys can thank this story for "Face to Face" and "Double Discovery."

Masquerade/Laboratory by @five-rivers : Everything by this author is amazing but I bring up this one because clones. So deliciously creepy and heartbreaking. Also, there's an element of this that also inspired my Invisiobang story as well.

Disconnected by Workparty: Fenton and Phantom sharing a body but with a twist. Really great. This author has a lot of other really great stories too. Analog - an anthology full of clone stories! After Time - Dan redemption fic that has him working for Clockwork. The Phantom Report - On going story. Jack and Maddie capture Phantom and go from enemies to allies after deciding to actually talk to him.

Note from the Resident and The Life Taken by The Light's Refrain : Fenton and Phantom sharing a body but with a thought provoking and sad twist.

Niel Masters Series by @ghostsray : Featuring their clone oc, Niel, who is precious and I love him so much.

Lair Called Home by critique : Another clone story, featuring a full ghost clone named Phantom. That fact and the descriptions of the lair influenced "Life and Death is all Perspective."

No one Knows AU by @darks-ink : The Fentons unknowingly adopting their own son is peak content. This series definitely made me fall in love with sweet family hurt/comfort. This author's got a bunch of other great stories too. Also check out their corpse au and reverse half-ghost Danny.

Glimpse by Pseudinymous: This is a Maddie talking to Phantom one shot. It's notable because this is the first time I saw that "Phantom as Danny's ghost" idea, which I later ended up using a few of my stories.

Ghost In The Machine (It's Only Me) by Sub_Rosa: Uses the Phantom as Danny's ghost idea again and Fenton and Phantom sharing a body . The last chapter is set in the TUE timeline with some heartbreaking angst. This was a big influence in my Phic Phight Story, Fractured.

The Other Half Of Him by Dreaming_Writer : TUE au where Danny's human half survived. Definitely another for Fractured.

Split by lal nila syrin (lalnilasyrin) : One shot. Duplication really is a good power and I love the interesting use of it here and the philosophical implications.

Duplication by ShadowPillow: Another interesting story about duplication.

Deliverance by Lightening Streak : Because Dark Gray is so under represented and this is something of a guilty pleasure for me.

What the Past Holds by AllisonNoir @mymadmedleyw : This is actually a new, still currently updating story but it really deserves more readership. It's Dan redemption with really interesting characterization. The highlight is definitely Jazz and Dan's interactions since that relationship is really rarely explored. A new chapter was posted today so please check this one out!

To fix the problem, he goes straight to the source, and one of the only other people who knows this particular superhero even exists. Pairings: Marichat and Adrinette Notes: A sweet fic I didn’t know I needed <3

Game of Snake and Mouse by Chocolate X My Mouth Summary: Ladybug and Chat have both been assigned Miraculouses to hand out to temporary wielders - the Snake and the Mouse. When Luka is nowhere to be found, Ladybug gives the Snake to Adrien. Of course, his first choice for the Mouse is his Princess, Marinette. There's only one problem with that... and its a pretty big one. Obviously, hilarity ensues. (LadyNoir/Adrienette/Multipik fluff!) Pairings: Snakemouse and Adriennette (Now that I think about it, it‘s probably all sides of this love square (hexagon?)) Notes: Short yet adorable little fic!

Absurdism by DarkNymfa Summary: Absurdism: doctrine that we live in an irrational universe Jazz has been a half-ghost for barely 2 months when she meets another like her. Notes: I'm always a sucker for when somebody else becomes the halfa. So this along with sibling bonding? It’s just 👌👌

Hold On by Fiverivers Summary: The fight is over. The ghosts have been freed. So why is Danny still holding on to the staff? Notes: Have I mentioned that I love Control Freaks? And that I just love every prompt that surrounds it?

Reverse Trio AU by lal-nila-syrin Note: There isn’t a title or summary due to this being a submission onto Kikaiz blog, but just know that it's their interpretation of Frightmare in this universe... Which also means Void!Danny.

Day Dreams by Fiverivers Summary: Nocturne has discovered Danny's Obsession with space. It would be remiss of him not to use that to his advantage. Notes: Ack, I don’t know how to give it the praise it deserves without spoiling anything 😔 Just know that it's amazing and you should definitely read it.

What You Want is What You Get by Jelliheart (Jellibeebee) Summary: "I wish I was part ghost."

It started with a wish. Of course, many things start that way, good and bad, and for Danny Fenton, it had most certainly turned out bad. He didn’t mean for it to be bad, though. In fact, it spawned from a well-intentioned desire to help his friends. Notes: Another Reverse Trio AU! (Have you noticed a trend in my DP fic preferences yet?)

There's not a ton of stories that just focus on duplication and how it works but here's the ones I could remember.

And this last one, called Practical Applications of Duplication, is mine.

Overall, I think how duplication works is something that each person has their own explanation for. It's very variable and can change depending on your preference or even what the story requires.

So my headcanons:

When Danny first learns duplication, it's pretty much just like having more than one body. Both bodies act and speak at exactly the same time because Danny can't figure out how operate them independently. Danny is still solidly a singular person with a singular mind. Every sensation, every perception is doubled. He sees out both pairs of eyes, hears with both pairs of ears, and feels with both pairs of hands. It's overwhelming, nearly debilitating. The duplicates looking at and interacting with each other is really trippy at this stage. I've described it a few times as looking in a fun house mirror, when you have two mirrors facing each other and you get this prism of endless reflections.

So first, Danny has to figure out how to only move one body at a time and to limit his perception so he's only seeing out of one body. Which means the other body is pretty useless.

That is, until Danny can learn how to effectively split his mind. I think he'd start by pretty much treating his duplicate as an automaton. He'd have to directly tell it what to do with exact instructions. His double would be able to fly off and do that. After, it would return to the prime Danny for more instructions, go dormant, or just be reabsorbed. Either way, the duplicate can't actually think for itself or make decisions. Which is a big problem if it runs into unexpected circumstances.

Now, the duplicate does have a tiny bit of the orginal Danny's consciousness. With practice and experience, he'd be able to divide himself more and more. Eventually, it would be like the ghost catcher, without the weird personalities, except Danny can end it whenever he wants. Each duplicate slowly becomes able to act independently but will always act as the original Danny would. They can communicate telepathically with their other selves to ask for advice or backup. This is really great in complicated situations and makes the Dannys a really effective team.

But it can lead to problems. At thid point, when Danny duplicates, there isn't a clear original or prime Danny. They're all equally Danny. That can be confusing for anyone interacting with the collective. And for the group themselves. With his mind and consciousness split so definitively when he's duplicated, Danny's less of a single individual and more of a collective. Not just a he but a they in the plural sense. In duplicated form, he (they) always speak in the plural. Even after he's re-fused, Danny struggles with talking about himself in the plural and remembering that he's only one person. This is quite scary for him and his loved ones; humans aren't meant to exist like this. But... Danny isn't actually human. While the human part is scared and doesn't want to duplicate anymore, the ghost part isn't afraid. It's actually comfortable and fully capable of existing as a collective and switching between singular and plural without problem.

But because I love weird, non human physiology, this can create another issue (which I actually wrote a story about called Duplicate or Clone?).

Staying separated for too long, in a situation where there's pressure or a reason for a duplicate to divide from Danny permanently can lead to said duplicate gaining a life of its own and becoming a completely separate person. This is part ghostly asexual reproduction, part the creation of a tulpa. All the way weird and sure to induce a freak out from Danny's loved ones. 🤣 Danny himself may or may not be freaked out. From a human perspective, this is hella messed up. According to ghosts, it's not typical but not all that strange. Having a twin with all his memories is cool. There might not know or be able to agree who's the orginal Danny but it may not particularly matter. Either could play both roles (Fenton and Phantom) , if the secret isn't out yet. And they understand each other in a way that no one else does. It's nice to not be alone.

I really should focus on writing that friggin’ essay for school, but damn this thought can’t let me rest:

when Danny duplicates himself (I am talking about the copies or what you call when he multiplies himself), is he talking to himself?

I mean that’s totally different then getting separated by the Ghost Catcher…

so these duplicates share a mind, or thinking separately, but the same way?

or the thoughts (several ones) appears in Danny’s mind, then one or the other version executes it? they vote which one is doing that or…

I just have to know, because this can’t let me rest, okay?

Almost all of them are just coming straight off my fanfiction faves, but I was trying to recommend things for a couple people and realized that a full list would be too overwhelming for a post and it seems to be a good idea to just turn it into a page? RT AU: I know Dani's not a clone in the RT AU, but I have an idea of a somewhat parallel to her "destabilization" being an illness of some sort. And then I remembered the Fentons (or at least Maddie?) are doctors and what if Vlad rescued her (either from the streets or an orphanage who couldn't afford to take care of her) and took her to them to get her help? And after the surgery she'd be officially adopted--though if she was still considered "frail" it's more reason for Vlad to spoil her.

That's a good idea! Idk anything about illnesses or adoption rules but I love the idea of Dani being prone to colds and stuff in the beginning because of a weaker immune system.

And Vlad babies her a lot and spoils her (even when she's not sick and just pretending so she can be pampered and skip school) because Vlad is way too excited and worried being a new dad.
