It also has a transparent human resources system and aims to develop wage studies in key sourcing regions to ensure that workers receive fair wages.
It does not use exotic animal skin, fur, and angora, which are all highly polluting and often harm the environment. Instead, it uses semi-synthetic regenerated fibers that are made from renewable materials such as lyocell, modal, cupro, and viscose, which are extracted from wood pulp from FSC certified sustainable forests.

The pandemic is liberating firms to experiment with radical new ideas
Some of these will persist after the crisis passes
Business
Apr 25th 2020 edition
Apr 25th 2020
NEW YORK
Editor’s note: The Economist is making some of its most important coverage of the covid-19 pandemic freely available to readers of The Economist Today, our daily newsletter. To receive it, register here. For our coronavirus tracker and more coverage, see our hub
When mount tambora erupted in April 1815 the dust and ash from the volcano in what is now Indonesia blotted out the sun and lowered global temperatures, hurting harvests everywhere. As food prices soared, tens of thousands of people died from famine and disease. So did thousands of horses, because their owners could no longer afford to feed them oats. It was against this dismal backdrop that Karl von Drais, a German inventor, dreamed up the Laufmaschine to replace equine locomotion. Today his “running machine” is known as the bicycle.
The pandemic is, like Tambora, an unmitigated calamity. But in some quarters it, too, is spurring innovation, as firms come up with new ways to keep making existing products despite disrupted supply chains, or, as demand collapses amid self-isolation, create new ones. Some are changing the very way they innovate.
The first thing about corporate innovation that the pandemic has changed is its cost. Doing anything novel at large firms typically involves oodles of capital. Right now, while companies preserve cash to stay liquid as revenues dry up, fresh investments are the last thing on most bosses’ minds. Some are discovering ways to do things differently without huge outlays.
The chief executive of a big European food retailer explains how his firm managed to increase online fulfilment by more than 50%, with no new capital investments, thanks to all-night picking and packing at stores. Evergrande, a big Chinese property firm, encouraged its sales force to use social media and virtual-reality technology to promote homes during the country’s covid shutdown; its sales more than doubled in February to $6.4bn. One foreign buyer recently paid £6m ($7.4m) for a home in London after only a 3d virtual tour. Matterport, a Californian firm, says its 3d cameras are selling like loo rolls.
Besides being expensive, corporate innovation has also historically been insular. This closed approach carries an opportunity cost, notes Henry Chesbrough of the Haas School at the University of California, Berkeley. Most large companies do not use or license most of their patents, save their “crown jewels”. Some of these vaults are being opened up, and their contents shared with others.
Usually prickly pharmaceutical rivals are working arm in arm in the race to develop drugs and vaccines against the coronavirus. ibm is leading a consortium that will pool supercomputing resources to help in the search for therapies. On April 21st Microsoft, once a staunch advocate of the “walled garden” approach to software, declared its support for the open-data movement (see article).
Big companies have largely favoured the advice of insiders and elite consultancies over the wisdom of the crowds, notes Karim Lakhani of Harvard Business School. This, too, is changing. Ericsson, a Swedish telecoms-equipment firm, is now investing more in open-source software and engaging customers in open-innovation efforts to speed up the adoption of its 5g kit.
Firms’ embrace of outsiders is boosting businesses like Tongal, a marketplace for creative video work used by multinationals including Lululemon, a Canadian athletic-wear firm, and Lego, a Danish toy company. Its new creator registrations were five times higher in March than in February, and monthly activity rose by 150%. Topcoder, which provides on-demand tech talent, has also seen a surge.
But the defining feature of the latest innovation revolution is breakneck speed. Companies are being forced to raise their corporate metabolism and overcome “analysis paralysis”, an affliction caused by top managers having pored over the same irrelevant case studies at business school. In a recent briefing consultants at Bain urged companies to throw out old data, test quickly and often, and assume you will be in testing mode for some time to come.
Confronted with the sudden closures of its primary distribution channel to restaurants and institutions, Sysco, a big American food-distribution firm, built an entirely new supply chain and billing system to serve grocery stores in less than a week. Long-delayed initiatives have suddenly been rolled out at scale overnight. A global standards body converted one of its main customer offerings from in-person to online in two weeks, says a person close to it.
The crisis has emboldened managers to move faster and to try out risky new ideas on larger groups of customers. As the boss of a Fortune 500 firm recently put it, “We are learning more by testing than [from] months spent [with] analysts and endless meetings.” Despite a worldwide retail apocalypse, Nike saw global internet sales of its sporting goods rise by over a third in the three months to February, thanks to a deft digital pivot inspired by its early covid-19 experience in China. Engagement with its Chinese online offering grew by triple digits in January and February, year on year, as consumers shared workouts through WeChat and other social media. Its sweat-inducing masterclass is being streamed more than 800,000 times a week on YouTube.
The desire for speed is reflected in the performance of firms that make 3d-printing equipment, which slashes the time from prototype to final product and, by replacing faraway suppliers with nearby 3d contractors, speeds up distribution. hp is accelerating the roll-out of “3d as a service”, which allows customers to pay just for what they print rather than purchasing the pricey kit and supplies. Early customers include Wallbox, which makes electric-vehicle chargers, and hipp Medical, which makes tools for orthopaedists and dentists.
Companies are also experimenting with new distribution channels. With workers scarce and customers happier to get a delivery from a machine rather than a human these days, automated deliveries have been embraced by Chinese e-commerce giants such as Alibaba, jd.com and Meituan. Edward Tse of Gao Feng, a consultancy, believes that autonomous delivery will be widespread within 12-18 months, much faster than he previously thought possible. Zipline, a Californian startup that is already delivering blood and medical samples by drone in Africa, now wants to do the same with coronavirus samples in America. Google has expanded the use of its Wing drones to deliver medicines and other necessities in rural Virginia.
Weighed down by legacy assets and protected by oligopolistic profits, many big firms are not natural innovators. Most corporations that have them relegate geeky innovationistas to skunk works that besuited types steer from the c-suite. In quiet, predictable times this command-and-control approach to innovation works fine, says Darrell Rigby of Bain. And, adds Gary Hamel of the London Business School, “In a small crisis power moves to the centre.” But, he reflects, in a big one “it moves to the periphery”. It may stay there for a while after the pandemic passes.■

Competing in the Age of AI Requires a New Strategy
Allow me to introduce you to the phrase of the decade. That’s AI (Artificial Intelligence) for business.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has infiltrated our lives like some form of body snatcher. It imbues previously inanimate objects like refrigerators and stereos with seemingly sentient attributes. They leave us feeling both impressed and unsettled.
Competing in the Age of AI
As small business owners, we straddle the intersection of user and creator.  As users of technology, we might enjoy the convenience that AI brings to our lives. “Alexa, order a half-gallon of milk.” Or “Siri, schedule an appointment with John Smith at 2 pm on Wednesday.”
As creators of products and services, we are thrust into a world of technology. It’s much easier to use than it is to integrate into our business. So the consumers of our products and services can experience that same level of convenience.
What’s the Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Small Business?
Artificial intelligence is disrupting. And it transforms how companies operate.  Larger companies have the technical resources to meet this new demand. But small businesses are at risk of being left behind.
Let’s start with retail. There are over  1 million retail establishments  across the United States, according to the NRF.  And then there’s Amazon.
One of the most common complaints among Main Street retailers is that customers come into their store to touch, feel and try their products and then buy them at a discount on Amazon.
One way those retailers are “fighting back” is by creating an online store on Amazon.  But is that all a small business can or should do?
How Can a Small Business Compete in the Age of AI?
To answer that question, I turned to a new book,  Competing in the Age of AI: Strategy and Leadership When Algorithms and Networks Run the World by Marco Iansiti, Karim R. Lakhani. This book describes the implications of artificial intelligence for business.
The authors focus primarily on larger businesses and brands, but there are plenty of lessons here that a small business owner can appreciate.
The first is to re-think how your business is structured and begin incorporating data and digital networks into your business model.  The book provides examples from well-known companies such as Pelaton as well as global company examples.
In the “AI Factory” chapter, you’ll begin to understand that the true power of artificial intelligence lies in helping your customers make better, faster decisions and choices.  Netflix is the example they use that we can all relate to.
Security isn’t a sexy topic, but it’s one that every business will need to embrace. Even though you, as the owner, are dedicated to running your business with integrity, there are forces outside your organization looking for data vulnerabilities.
Finally, the last chapter “A Leadership Mandate,” will prepare you for the challenges you are most likely going to face as artificial intelligence becomes more and more prevalent across the industry landscape.
Get An MBA in Artificial Intelligence
If business books that over-simplify major industry trends leave you with more questions than a basic understanding, this book will not disappoint.
Authors Marco Iansiti and Karim Lakhani are both professors of Business Administration at Harvard Business School.  And, this is what makes the book a bit challenging to get through if you aren’t used to reading more academically minded books.
The text is based on extensive research with hundreds of enterprise businesses and reads like case study after case study.
While this may land as being “over your head”, it’s worth taking the time to read the book carefully and giving yourself the time to digest the information.
Conclusion
Remember when you were wondering if having a website was necessary for your business?  Or, what about if social media was a fad? Well, put artificial intelligence for your business in that same category.
You don’t have to wonder if AI is important for your business, start by accepting that artificial intelligence will eventually be as critical to the sustainability and growth of your business.  Your challenge is understanding and planning for how and where you should start implementing AI to add value and improve your customer’s experience. Competing in the Age of AI will help you on this journey.

This North Kansas City company is working to save trees by making paper
NORTH KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The average American family throws out nearly two trees worth of paper a year. That’s more than 13,000 sheets of paper; a tree can produce 8,333 sheets.
A North Kansas City company is trying to curb the use of trees. Just in time for Earth Day.
The Artist and Craftman Supply shop in the Crossroads is a Mecca for artists and craftsmen, obviously. Walk into the store, and you’ll find an entire wall devoted to paper.
Shelly Pinto stood in front of it Tuesday and touched a roll of brightly colored and patterned paper above her head.
”I like this because of the shine,” she said. Then she pointed to another. “This one’s really fun.”
If you’ve ever liked paper or a pattern a bit too much, you might like Pinto.
“I’m the art department for Shizen Handmade papers,” the former Hallmark employee said.
She designed every one of the few dozen papers displayed at the store, and roughly 500 others. From the print, to the color, to the size.
“I love seeing all the color and the play of pattern,” she said.
All of her designs are stored in a North Kansas City warehouse, complete with a sleeping guard dog.
Shizen Designs has more than 600 styles of paper and 800 different paper products nestled on its shelves. Patterns range from paisley to polka dots, colors go from 70’s inspired neon to neutral.
Neil Pinto, Shelly’s husband, is the business side of the three-person wholesale company.
“We sell to book stores, the art supply industry, paper stores,” he said, and he also sells to three educational distributors.
The deep teals, bright pinks, vibrant emeralds and rich sapphires may be what catch your eye. But it’s what the paper feels like that makes Shizen different.
“There is a lot of demand for environmentally friendly paper,” Neil said. “The papers are made out of cotton from t-shirt factories.”
Each sheet of paper was once a shirt scrap from a factory in India. (Shizen is Japanese for nature.)
Each paper is made from fabric pulp and cleaned with purified and reused water. Each color is screen printed by hand and then dried in the sun. One piece of paper may have three or four different colors on it, so that means a base color and then each color is added to make the final design.
However, there is a public health element to the fabric pulp paper.
Gujarat is one of India’s major textile-producing regions. It also has one of the highest rates of cancer and other chronic diseases, said Priti Lakhani, a public health professional.
“One of the great things about India is they create beautiful, unbelievable handiwork and textiles,” said Lakhani, who emigrated from India years ago and still has family in the Gujarat area.
“The downside of that is there is a public health cost to that, which is actually quite great. There is a higher rate of cancer … as a result of producing textiles.”
“The rates of cancer are so high, and there are so many problems as a by-product of the increase in manufacturing of textiles,” Lakhani continued.
“Are we really doing the best thing for that population in that community, in the long term for their health, to continue to purchase things that could be hurting them and the environment?” she rhetorically asked.
Which is why she co-founded an online store, Peace of Papers, to sell Shizen’s designs. Shizen is only a wholesaler; the Pintos only sell their papers to other companies.
However, Shizen does have its papers sold in stores, which brings us back to Shelly at the Crossroads.
She listed off the ways to use the patterned paper.
“You can use it for collaging, you can use it for album covers, book covers, wrapping paper, you can frame it.”
Pinto and her husband are proud of their work. The patterned papers made of fabric pulp don’t just protect the environment. The paper making process also protects the people making them.
Talk about a natural beauty.

She now knows what it takes to get the perfect blowdry and how to make it last. Noticing a lack of good quality and affordable blowdries in London, she embarked on her dream, to open her very own blow dry bar in the heart of Kensington.
