this probably means absolutely nothing but whenever buck has worn his civvie clothes, it's ALWAYS the white high tops (apart from his Crockett outfit) but we see when he sits down on Eddie's couch w the tablet that he's got some new balance sneakers on (still white though). I mean this probably means nothing and I'm likely grasping at straws here, but we see in the next shot which is focused solely on him that he's coming to terms with 1, Eddie thinking about leaving and likely 2, that he has feelings realizations and the shoes can be a very subtle way of showing that he's found his last.
also another thing is that he's wearing a dark blue shirt and Eddie's wearing a burgundy shit which is a nod/parallel to the poker scene where buck wears red and eddie wears blue (though the colours are brighter in that scene). again, grasping at straws here but for something like this, there's always a reason why the costume department picks the clothes they do

the bucktommy anniversary scene is so so hilarious. they go to the same restaurant where they had their absolutely disastrous first date. buck doesn’t get him anything for their 6 month anniversary. tommy gets him lakers tickets even though buck hates basketball. then says “take eddie if you want” to which buck says “uh… really?” then these girls hit on buck and buck’s like “wow it’s so insane that i’m bisexual. i wonder if my boyfriend of 6 months is bisexual?” it’s apparently the first time he’s ever thought this. tommy is not bisexual though, but he WAS engaged to a woman. and because they apparently never talk about anything ever, this is the first buck is hearing of this. and then it turns out his ex fiancé is abby. then he calls buck a himbo on accident. and then he’s kind of weird and misogynistic about abby. date over.

i'm not saying this to be callous or rude, but i think what's hitting a lot of buckt*mmys hard is that they're truly just unable to admit that they aren't very good at media analysis. the term 'media literacy' has become so overused in fandom that i genuinely think people forget what it means- it's a learned skill, something you have to study, something you can educate yourself on by reading papers and books and watching all sorts of movies and tv. they're all so convinced that the breakup came out of nowhere when it could not have been written more clearly; tommy has consistently been shown as an outsider in buck's life.
to claim that "everything was perfect" in 8x05 is so ridiculous i almost don't even know where to start. they had two scenes without eddie: in the first, tommy was incredibly condescending towards buck and and his interests (it's time to put away the screen, you already had your five minutes, lights out evan), and in the second scene buck literally says "my boyfriend won't even kiss me" and tommy responds with "that's not true" but they pointedly do NOT show them kissing. if the audience is meant to believe that buckt*mmy are endgame, it would have made perfect narrative sense to have them kiss right then to show (not just tell) us that tommy cares about buck, boils and all, and they did not do that.
moving onto 8x06, the only clue needed to show us they were going to break up was tommy buying buck lakers tickets. that's all it took. in 7x04 it's made so clear that buck does not like basketball. if tommy genuinely knew buck, he would not have bought him tickets to a sport the show dedicated an entire episode to telling us buck does not like! if their relationship was meant to last, tommy could have bought buck tickets to a fight in vegas like he did with eddie. this would have been a great callback, because it's supposedly the first moment buck got jealous of tommy and eddie hanging out. it would remind the audience that even though buck was jealous, he got tommy in the end and they're now doing the activities he wanted to do with tommy before.
once again, media analysis is a skill. no one is perfect at it, and ofc shows can throw away the book and make decisions that don't make sense. but to claim this came out of nowhere shows a severe lack of knowledge and understanding of how stories are written. the shippers were seeing what they wanted to see and they missed all the signs the show was sending them, and now they're claiming the rug was pulled out from under them.

It’s not just 805 even. 806 also spends most of its run time telling you “these two like each other, there’s somethings they don’t know about each other but they’re willing to learn and grow.” And then in the 11th hour it gets ripped away in a way that, had it not been for the interviews, would seem like the beginning of a breakup/makeup plot. They want to be together, they said so in the breakup scene. Everything in the show points to them getting back together (anecdotally, the irl casual watcher friend I have thinks they are getting back together)
Like say whatever about Lakers Tickets but Buck said out loud “I could [see a future there].” “Why be apart when we could be together” “[the First and Last] could be the same thing.” He wants this. Tommy said he was doing this because he couldn’t handle it if Buck broke his heart which implies he knew he was falling in love. They want to be together but Tommy is scared (and we don’t know why) so it reads as temporary. And then I read the interviews. And they act like this is the end. And that just makes me sad and angry and I just want one person to acknowledge how much they hurt a significant portion of their audience.

I refuse to believe Buck wouldn’t have got Tommy a gift. Had to fix this scene.
“Don’t even think about trying to pay when the bill comes!” Buck insists. He’s been antsy all night, thinking about all the planning that went into today. It is their six-month anniversary after all.
Tommy shakes his head. “Come on, you paid for take-out last night.”
“Well, tonight is special. Do you know why?” He’s not expecting Tommy to have got him anything or have even remembered it’s the anniversary. As Eddie put it earlier, technically the date is subjective. Tommy could think their relationship started on their first (albeit failed) date. Or the coffee meetup when they decided to try again. But Buck has a feeling Tommy and him are on the same page and count tonight, six months since their first kiss in the loft, to be their anniversary. Even with the rocky start, it was because of that kiss that Buck is the man he is today. For that, he owes Tommy everything.
Tommy takes out a box that was definitely not there when they sat down. Maybe he asked the waiter to sneak it on to the seat.
“I-I didn’t get you anything.” He lies, wanting his gift to be a surprise after dinner. Tommy knows he’s lying. He’s always been able to read him better than anyone. Better than himself.
He goes along with it, regardless. “You’re paying for dinner.”
“Right.” He replies opening the gift. He immediately laughs when he sees what’s inside. “Oh, Laker’s tickets, no way!” He doesn’t hide the sarcasm in his voice. This gift is an obvious reference to the catalyst of them getting together - when Buck, in a jealous rage, maimed Eddie to get Tommy’s attention. While extreme, it did work. “Very funny, babe.”
He smiles in that perfectly kissable way he does. “I thought so. And you don’t even have to take me. Take Eddie, if you want.”
There’s no way. “Ah, really?
“And die.” That’s more like it. There’s the man Buck has fallen for – dry charm and all.
A blonde woman approaches their table. “Hey, do you mind taking our picture? It’s my friend’s bachelorette.” She is eyeing Buck, scanning down his frame. Which he doesn’t understand, because does she not see the beefcake sitting across from him?
“Uh, we’re actually –“ He attempts to get out of it, but is cut off by his boyfriend.
“It’s fine, Evan. Go.” Tommy doesn’t seem to care at all. So, with a shrug, Buck gets up and walks with the woman over to her table.
Buck hasn’t been checking his phone all night. That’s just rude. And Tommy is a much better view than whatever’s on his screen. He feels his back pocket vibrate and takes it out to check the message.
Zahrah: All set! Be there in 20! 😊
Buck grins and likes the message. Excitement spikes his veins. He can’t wait to see Tommy’s reaction to his gift.
“Oh, actually can you take it on my phone? Unless… you were hoping to get my number?”
Buck looks up from his phone to the woman, cringing at the notion. He used to pull that move back in his Buck 1.0 days – take a picture on his phone and send it to the woman just to get her number. He’s not proud of it. “N-No, t-that wasn’t my intention.” He stammers, putting his phone away and taking hers. “That’s my boyfriend, actually.” He looks back at Tommy who is indulging in the spumoni they were supposed to be sharing.
“Oh.” She says, following his gaze. “Okay.” She sounds disappointed as she joins her friends in the booth. Oh well.
Buck takes about fifty rapid fire pictures and returns the phone to the woman. “Took a bunch! You guys look amazing. Have a good night.”
When he makes it back to the table, the spumoni is mostly gone. Buck’s not surprised. Nothing comes between Tommy and his love for dessert. “She was hitting on you.” He says with a shrug, like it’s nothing. Tommy’s not one to get jealous, so it makes sense he doesn’t seem to care. He’s always so sure of himself. Buck wishes he could have an ounce of his confidence.
“I know… That was kind of weird.” He admits, picking at the remnants of spumoni left on the plate.
“No, it wasn’t. You’re hot, so is she. It’s okay to look.” Buck knows it’s normal to look – healthy even. Knows that being with Tommy doesn’t mean he’s suddenly not attracted to women anymore. And it’s more than okay to find someone else attractive while in a relationship. But he doesn’t want anyone else. He wants Tommy. “… I checked out the waiter when we sat down.”
“I know you did.” Buck laughs with a shake of his head. “Truth is, I only have eyes for you…” He leans in, dragging his foot up Tommy’s leg. “…Daddy.” He whispers, just so Tommy can hear.
Buck can see Tommy swallow, eyeing his lips with that glint of desire in his eyes. “Evan –“
“All set?” The waiter questions. Once again, they’re interrupted. What is it with this place? “Who gets the damage?”
“That would be him.” Tommy replies, pointing at Buck – who’s still rubbing his leg underneath the table.
The waiter hands Buck the bill. “Whenever you’re ready. No rush.”
“There’s a rush. I’m taking you home.” Tommy corrects, unaware of the surprise waiting for him outside the restaurant. If they weren’t on a time crunch, he’d take him in the bathroom right now.
Buck pays and they walk to the exit hand in hand. He’s come so far from six months ago - when at this same restaurant, he couldn’t even admit to his best friend that he was on a date. Now everyone can see they’re together. And if they didn’t, Buck would make sure to tell them.
His heart feels like it’s about to crack through his ribcage, it’s beating so hard in his chest. All he wants is to impress his boyfriend. They step outside and Buck’s gift is waiting for them in the street. “Evan… what’s this?” Tommy asks, looking over to Buck who is probably beaming bright enough to light the night sky.
“I lied about not getting you a gift!” He holds his hands out to the surprise, wiggling his fingers for dramatic effect. “Surprise!” There are two white horses drawing a carriage adorned with roses and fairy lights.
The driver, Zahrah, is in a tux with a matching top hat. She bows at them, tipping her hat. She looks just as excited as Buck. They’ve been texting for weeks, getting everything planned. She’s become very invested in their relationship. “Good evening, gentlemen. If you don’t mind getting in – we are on a deadline.”
“Deadline? This is exactly how Buck wanted Tommy to react. He seems to be in total shock. Zahrah fist bumps Buck as they climb into the carriage. “Evan – I… I’m paying you back for dinner.”
“No, you’re not. It’s our anniversary!” He replies, shoving Tommy’s shoulder. One of the horses’ neighs as they start to move. “And there’s more!” He can hardly contain his excitement. He’s practically bouncing on the velvet seat. “We’re going to Hollywood Forever to catch tonight’s showing of ‘The Princess Bride.’ I already reserved us a spot – dead center, just how you like!” Tommy has tears stuck in his eyes. His hold on Buck’s hand is tight enough to leave a mark. “I-Is this okay?” Buck has to ask, even though he thinks he knows the answer.
“Okay?” Tommy turns to him, pulling him in to kiss his birthmark like he always does. “Evan, this is incredible.” Buck can’t help it; he has to kiss him. So, he does – only pulling back when they need to breathe. “You didn’t have to do all this, baby… My gift – it was mostly a joke… I-I didn’t think you were going to get me anything…. Fuck, I never should have listened to Eddie. You hate basketball…”
“Shhh – stop. I don’t hate it… It’s j-just not my favorite.” He cups Tommy’s face, making him meet his gaze so he takes his words in. It’s rare to see Tommy doubt himself, but every once in a while, the bullied kid his monster of a father raised comes back to haunt him. “I’m going to enjoy the game because I’m going to be sitting next to you the whole night. That’s all I care about… That and eating my weight in hotdogs.” Tommy laughs, his eyes still glazy, but filled with affection. “Now get out of that head of yours and enjoy my gift.”
“Trust me, baby. I’m enjoying every second of this. I-“
“I love you!” Buck was planning on waiting until after the movie when they were alone to drop the bomb that is those three little words, but he couldn’t help himself. Not when Tommy is sitting there looking so damn lovable. “I love you so fucking much, Thomas Kinard.” Zahrah makes an excited squeak from the driver’s perch.
“Took the words out of my mouth. I love you, Evan.”

tease tidbit tuesday
a bit of an early tease tidbit tuesday bc I'm writing another fix it (the first one is here if anyone wants to read lol) bc the writing in this whole episode was godawful for everyone, but the restaurant scene dialogue is driving me insane if I think about it for even a second lmao
also, it's turning smutty 💁‍♀️ so it's gonna take me a minute (like smut usually does) so here's a snippet haha
(also, just fyi, I'm staying with bucktommy forever, I'm not going anywhere lol they're thriving in my heart 🫶)
___
“Well, let’s get out of here as soon as possible, then.” Tommy says, leaning forward, putting his elbows on the table, bringing Buck’s attention to those muscular arms, his gaze heated and boring into Buck, and Buck swears he can feel it in his stomach. “But open your gift first.” “I’d rather open you up, but okay.” Buck mumbles, and Tommy snickers under his nose, takes a sip of his beer. “Behave, honey, we’re in public.” He whispers, and Buck kind of wants to take it as a challenge, flirt and tease as much as he can and rile Tommy up until he all but drags Buck to the bathroom – well, it’s more likely it’d be Buck doing the dragging, Tommy can be infuriatingly composed when he wants to. “Wow,” Buck says as he opens the envelope and pulls out the gift. “Lakers tickets, no way.” He feels his eyebrows go high up on his forehead as he looks up at Tommy, who seems amused and smug and so delighted. “Very funny.” He adds, trying to go for deadpan, but not able to hide an amused smile as well.

8.06 post mortem - Buck/Tommy - General - 9-1-1 Zombified
Many of us wondered why a cut emergency case from episode 7.04 was used. A novelty and if you look closely, you'll notice that the characters appeared very different from how they did in the rest of season 8, and the scenes felt erratic. This inconsistency is reminiscent of the writing from Andrew Meyers, who also wrote episode 7.04. However, in that episode, he had a co-writer who was clearly more talented. Episode 8.06 was poorly written compared to 7.04. Alone the scene in the beginning. Buck could have pointed out that this chick was interrupting the date he had with his boyfriend. Tommy then mentioned the Kinsey scale
Tumblr media
Our walking encyclopedia had no idea what his boyfriend was talking about. Seriously? Also, Buck doesn't want to buy a present for their 6-month anniversary, and Tommy gives him 2 Lakers baseball cards and awkwardly mentions that Buck could go with Eddie? Is this dinner supposed to be romantic? Well, they could have gone to McDonalds. Meyers should have consulted his co-writer at this point; we're heading straight for disaster. Then Tim had this wonderful idea with Abby and thought it was hilarious. The guy's humour isn't just weird, it's kind of crude. Abby never mentioned that she went out with another guy from the 118. Isn't that weird? No one ever knew about it? Not Hen, not Chim? For two years? Did Tommy keep her locked in his basement? This plot is so poorly constructed that it's cringe-worthy at best. And that's when Himbo's jaw hit the floor… along with the audience.
The only good scene was Josh's GLEE speech. And I may be reading between the lines, but I felt that the way Josh talked about post and past GLEE and how Buck can't blame Tommy for his actions because times were different was a wink and a nod to the haters. I really had the impression that this was a cunning move to address why Tommy was who he was back then and why he has changed now.
But seconds later I nearly choked on my drink, and I can tell you it's orgasmic when a sip of Pepsi comes out of your nose, when Maddie said, "She wondered how many men Abby had turned gay." Because I was chatting to a friend before I watched the episode and I almost said the same thing. I live in Europe, so I watched it the next day, knowing what was coming, but nothing about that particular scene. Which, frankly, was terrible.
Forgive me for ignoring the emergencies in this episode. They were repetitive, to say the least, just with different protagonists.
So far we have a recycled episode, a recycled ex, a recycled emergency and a recycled scenario, Maddy is pregnant (hooray). It begins to reek of decay.
Brownie points to those who aren't already traumatised or bored to death. Now for the highlight: Tommy shows up at Buck's apartment in a great mood. He is looking forward to a date with his friend and hot sex as the icing on the cake (that's what I had in mind). Tommy gets suspicious when Buck asks him to sit down. It doesn't take long before he pulls out his phone and shows his friend photos of Abby and a younger Buck. This is followed by an awkward explanation of why he didn't share the news in the restaurant, and Tommy's reaction is a little awkward too. But this is only the overture to the worst retconning I have seen on television in a long time. The coincidence is swept under the carpet in the blink of an eye, and now it gets creepy.
Compare the scene in the coffee shop with this one. It has the same structure, bit by bit. Buck invites Tommy to the wedding in the coffee shop, and Tommy says, "What?" Here it is: "I want you to move in with me." We have a mashup of the first kiss and the coffee shop scene, and Oliver plays it similarly. The worst part is when Tommy turns into his zombie version. Excellently played by Lou. No doubt about it. He gave it his all. He maimed that shitty script, which felt like Meyers had raided AO3, picked the worst written fics and went for the most cringe-worthy insult he could find for a bisexual. "I was your first, but I won't be your last." Hello? This topic only comes to Tommy's mind after he is asked to move in together? I was expecting "I can't move in with you because I wouldn't know where to put my car lift and Muay Thai studio". No, it's because all the trust and love Tommy put in Buck is wiped out by the retconning of Tommy's personality. He succumbs to total chaos. This is not the Tommy we met in S7 and certainly not the one we met in 8.05. Fuck me! It didn't make sense. We would have needed a lot more background information ON SCREEN to make it believable. A scene from Tommy's past. Who hurt him so badly? It wasn't Abby. She only managed to traumatise Buck. Was it after he met Abby? Was it another guy?
Hello writers, are you still in your right mind? We have no clues. Neither the loyal fans and certainly not the new ones. You're reducing a character to a sad laughing stock. You rob him of all his merits, which you had Buck recite like a poem in school. And then you expect us to believe it? You steamroll over everything that's been painstakingly built up to this episode? It's actually convenient, I let the whole relationship run off screen. We don't see any flying lessons together, no training together, no cosy get-togethers in front of the TV, no exchange of affection, nothing. It's all headcanon. Guys, I've seen shows and movies where a sequence like this lasted five minutes and you knew where the couple stood. Maybe a flashback or two into Tommy's past would have helped. But no, instead the audience had to put up with the same old nonsense. A ridiculous story about an urn, a guy who sneezes and his intestines fall out, a kid who doesn't fall down a drain but slips down a pipe. They give us nothing, but we're supposed to believe everything, retconning is so great. If any of us wrote fanfiction like that, we'd be banned from AO3. And as if that wasn't enough, Tommy stands up and says, "Believe me, I didn't see this coming either. Tell me, were you on drugs when you were writing? There are a thousand ways to respond sensibly to "Let's move in together" without turning it into such a dumpster fire. The crowning glory of all this madness is when Tommy says "I'll see you around Buck" instead of Evan (the same words he said to Evan when he left him standing outside the restaurant on their first date). Where did that come from? It's as if Tommy had lost all respect for his lover, or as if he wanted to punch him in the face while he was already on the ground. We, the viewers, also had this feeling. And Tommy's behaviour was completely disturbed. I wonder if he checked himself into a mental facility right after that.
I won't say anything about the rest of the episode because I'm a polite person.
Conclusion: Please take the pen away from this lunatic and never let him write anything again or give him a co-writer like in 7.04. The guy is totally unhinged.
Extra brownies, you made it!

Does anyone feel like Tommy was testing Buck with the Lakers game tickets?
Like, he says right after that Buck doesn't have to take Tommy and that he can take anyone else, then pauses to judge Buck's reaction and then when Buck is just confused, he adds, 'you can even take Eddie' where unexpectedly but also not, Buck perks up. Tommy picks that reaction up immediately and interrupts Buck while he's saying 'Really?' with 'And Die' to shut that thought down.
Especially paired with the awkward photo clicking-pseudo flirty scene during the date where Tommy gives permission to look, he almost seems to check in if Buck has someone in mind. Of course, Buck was only happy because Eddie would love to go to the game and when Eddie's happy, he shines like the sun canonically (see 7x04 basketball scene from Buck's POV).
Like do you think he suspects Eddie, he must, wouldn't he? It's such a cliché.
