My friend Scott Engel at Russo Music in Asbury Park New Jersey asked me to replace the first two block inlays in this vintage Harmony Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. Scott has a very busy schedule running the store and glad I could help out. These inlays are tough because plastic like cellulose nitrate shrinks and expands throughout the years. In this application I had to inlay the plastic below the fingerboard radius a little to then level, sand flush and make smooth to the touch. Over time the cellulose nitrate will yellow but because it is hard to find the creamy yellow original plastic, I then used my yellow stains and dyed them like I restore plastic binding on old and new archtops. The dye is alcohol based so it melts into the plastic and matches the rest of the board. It came out great and has the original factory look.
