In the world of Prosperity, there are two main classifications of Merfolk, and they are considered one species.
Freshwater AKA Lakefolk, Riverfolk, Waders
omnivorous
can’t shapeshift
large variety of body sizes, shapes, colors, fin types, and scale/skin patterns
gills, webbed hands, sharp teeth, and internal genitalia distinguish them from fictional mermaids
largely friendly to other species
Saltwater AKA Sirens, Sea Serpents, Ocean Shifters
dwell in caves and deep water and hunt large marine animals with sharp teeth and strong jaws, as well as powerful tails and lures on their chins
live alone or in small groups and rarely venture on land
unknown numbers
shapeshifting ability allows them to perfectly assume the form of other creatures at will, though leaving water will automatically trigger a change into something with lungs, and vice versa
just as their exact relation to freshwater merfolk is unclear, their relation to shifters is also uncertain, with some believing that saltwater merfolk are evolved from shifters who never took off their borrowed skin

Meanwhile Dahlia, who knows nothing of this political situation beyond the fact that it exists, is just scared and confused about why her besty has erupted into feral screeching and desire for wanton destruction of a people. And it all being centered around a stick, apparently.

The hearts in her eyes and the fluttering in her chest is purely for Dahlia-beating-up-lakefolk-for-her reasons. Nothing else.
Any glances you might see her stealing at Dahlia’s bountiful chest is purely coincidence and should be entirely ignored.

Civilization
Three thousand leagues to the south-east The Yuan and Hsiang run into a great lake And above the lakefolk dwell whose hearts are innocent. Happy like children, thay climb to the tree tops, and run to the water to catch bream and trout. Their pleasures are like those of beasts and birds. The put no check on body or mind. Far have I wandered in the Nine Lands; and wherever I travelled, such manners had gone: puzzled, I find myself standing thinking: what good have our Saints and statesmen done us?

A Tale of the Lakefolk
Who are the lakefolk you may ask if you are truly curious. The lakefolk are of kind nature, although sly they seem. They live contentedly amidst a grove of lillypads along the shore of a never ending lake. They have long seeked to name this grove, but as each family was set on vastly different titles they settled for none. Over time it has come to be called the Grove.
Summertime in the Grove occurs between the months of June and August. Cool wind off the ripples leaves the summer fairly tepid, around 60 degrees, and by far the most loved season by the lakefolk. All lakefolk vocations are given a break in summer. Each getting plenty of hours to bask in the sunlight, ride water beetles across waves, and have fun as lakefolk do.
It is by no mistake then that the traveling festival arrives midsummer.

@royalreef replied: (( miri absolutely encourages salting the lake and will assist as much as she can, she wants to PLAY and the lake is EVIL FOR DENYING HER THAT.
Tumblr media
She is going to rob a salt mine. She will carry a whole mine’s worth of salt to the lake herself and kill every last bit of life in it just so Miri can play. Miranda is the only aquatic creature here that matters.

“... I’m just... I’m just gonna go find that mer-bear and kick it’s ass.”
It caused this. It made the stupid event popup. She doesn’t care if it’s some lakefolk guardian spirit, she’s fighting it. If she gets fucked up, all the better.

@royalreef doesn’t seem to be enjoying camp. 💙
“Ey, Mirri? You doing alright?” The normally boisterous voice came out quieter than was usual, with an air of concern that might’ve seemed unnatural coming from such a hulking, imposing thing such as Dahlia... to anyone not yet acquainted with her anyway. To her friends, this wasn’t anything new. And Miranda was one of her better ones. Hence her concern.
Tumblr media
“You’ve been out here glaring at the lake for a while. Do one of those lakefolk losers owe you money or something?” She asked, knelt down beside the comparatively miniscule merfolk, staring out at the aforementioned body of water curiously. Dahlia wasn’t exactly the smartest, but she was at least perceptive- she’d noticed that Miranda hadn’t visited the lake at all the whole trip... which sucked, because she wanted to see if she could hold her breath longer than a merfolk can (don’t try to tell her that’s impossible, she’ll body slam you).
She figured it had to be because of the lake people. I mean, they and merfolk are just slightly different, so that means they probably hate each other. Which is part of the reason she’s been trashing them at every opportunity.
