The Jack Rose cocktail was created around the turn of the 20th century. Its origin is ambiguous, but reports peg its creation to either New York or New Jersey, which tracks considering the drink’s base spirit was likely Laird’s Applejack, an apple brandy made in New Jersey at the oldest licensed distillery in the U.S. The drink quickly found fans and enjoyed a popular run through Prohibition and even among prominent authors—it was a known favorite of John Steinbeck and made an appearance in Hemingway’s 1926 book “The Sun Also Rises.” It was also included as one of six basic drinks to know in David Embury’s 1948 book “The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks.”
Jack Rose
2 oz applejack (bonded - 100 proof) 3/4 oz C&S Berry Grenadine 3/4 oz lemon juice
Add all ingredients to cocktail shaker, add ice and shake hard for five to ten seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail coupe glass and garnish with an expressed lemon peel.

TMNT #1-4 DECEMBER 2001 - JUNE 2002 BY PETER LAIRD, JIM LAWSON AND ERIC TALBOT
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS (FROM TURTLEPEDIA AND COMIC VINE)
A Fugitoid makes its way across the moon in leaps, passing by Tranquility Base and marveling at how it has stood the test of time. It meets up with an Utrom, and the two discuss their plans to finish completing a large craft and bring these "guests" that they have with them.
In a New York City alley, the Ninja Turtles face an all too familiar scene - carapaces against an alley wall while a street gang - this time, the Madhattan Maulitia - have them cornered. While the four of them are more of a match for the fifteen dullards in the Maulitia, the Turtles decide to take the rooftops as soon as possible to gain some distance between them and their foes. After a moment of reflection, they head on their way, only to find they are less safe than they had hoped, as the Maulitia has somehow followed them up with snowmobiles. After trouncing the Maulitia up on the rooftops and heading back down, Donatello comes across a snowmobile all on its lonesome and steals it. Michelangelo tries to get Don's attention for a ride in the treacherous snow, but his brother doesn't hear him and Mike slips and falls in the street. Moments later, he's hit by a bus, and a costumed character named Magnrok finds him, carrying him into an alley calling someone in to pick him up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Don rides the snowmobile into a subway and loses control, crashing it through a wall, where he finds an old, abandoned armored truck.
April and Casey head out to a fertility doctor, while Shadow trains with Metal Head. After their sparring session, Shadow worries about the outcome of the appointment. Splinter dismisses it as the impatience of a teenager, but Shadow has a premonition that big things are in store for the entire world.
Tumblr media
Michelangelo wakes up in an ambulance to find paramedics working on him. He freaks out and tries to escape, but the paramedics warn him not to open the door. Mike pays no heed to them and does so anyway, instantly falling out and finding that the ambulance is flying. Michelangelo holds on to a handle to prevent himself from falling, but he is still dizzy and injured and loses his grip. Fortunately, a flying superhero, Raptarr, happens to be in the area and catches Mikey as he passes back out. Raptarr returns him to the ambulance.
Leonardo and Raphael return to the lair, with Raph complaining about how cold he is. Leo turns up the heat and offers to make Raph some hot chocolate, and discuss The Jones' decision to try for a child of their own. Leo then asks if they should look for their brothers, they haven't seen since the scuffle with the Madhattan Maulitia. Raph declines due to the weather and suggests Mikey's having the time of his life in the snow anyway.
Mikey wakes up again, this time strapped to a hospital bed. A woman on a video screen insists he stay put, but Mike just wants to get out of there. The woman says he's free to leave as long as he checks out at the front desk, and that his effects are in a nearby closet. He wonders aloud why the staff hasn't freaked out due to him being a mutant turtle. It is at this moment that Mikey sees that the patients at this hospital are a little out of the ordinary, consisting of various costumed adventurers and non-humans.
A Doctor Singh approaches Michelangelo with some orderlies and tells him he needs to return to his room. Mikey refuses and begins to fight with the orderlies, before they are interrupted by a man approaching in a wheelchair - the Turtles' old friend Pat, aka Zippy Lad of the Justice Force. Pat takes charge of Mikey and lets Singh and the orderlies be on their way, explaining to the turtle that he is in Kurtzburg Memorial Hospital, a special hospital for aliens, heroes, mutants, and other oddities, and one of only three places like it in the world. Pat happens to be on the hospital's board of directors and saw Mike come in while he was at a budget meeting, and vouched for him. Pat convinces Mike to get back in bed and rest up.
Tumblr media
Back at the lair, Donatello rushes in, excited, and coaxes Casey and Raph to follow him to a discovery he's made. Leo stays behind so he can watch Junkyard Wars in peace. Don leads Raph and Casey to the abandoned armored truck he'd found, and the three of them examine the vehicle, taking notes of what would need to be cleaned and fixed to get it running again, and finding the moldy corpses of some apparent robbers inside, including a skeleton in the back wearing 1970s garb and still holding onto a gun. Don and Casey leave to get some batteries and cleaning supplies, leaving Raph to bemoan being stuck there with the "dead guys".
Shadow leaves for a clandestine rendezvous with her boyfriend Jay, while Splinter worries for her safety in the snow. When she meets up with Jay, she suggests that they go to the Jones Farm and warm up by the fireplace, but he reminds her that it's supposed to be abandoned and the last time they were there, someone called the police on them. Instead, he pesters her about going back to her place and meeting her "famously reclusive grandfather", which she turns down.
Meanwhile, on the moon, the Utroms accomplish another phase on their mysterious plan.
In the jungles of Venezuela, a research team discovers a strange life form. Meanwhile, in the Big Apple, Casey, Raph and Don get the abandoned armored car running, much to the dismay of the local New Yorkers. Master Splinter and Shadow are enraptured by the television coverage of an invasion of Unidentified Flying Objects.
Tumblr media
The Utroms finally reveal themselves to the word in a very public display. Karai fantasizes facing the turtles in battle while her aid keeps her updated on the news about the alien arrival. After watching the tv coverage of the Utroms Michelangelo and Raphael decide to get a closer look when the stumble on a mysterious robot in the sewers.

REVIEW
As I mentioned before, the Archie TMNT comic was my gateway to the world of comic-books. But because of the indie nature of the Turtles, their comics were really hard to get from outside of the US.
As a result, collecting them was frustrating, and in any case, getting all of them was futile. It wasn’t until around 2005, that I started getting TMNT comics for real.
At the time I started with colored collected editions (First), and eventually this and Tales came up, as those were being published at the time. As a result, I got almost all of the issues for both series. I was really impressed, not only by the story, but also by the interaction of Peter Laird with the fans, and how he would keep us up to date with his life. Eventually I started watching the 2003 cartoon (also, not something I had access to at the time it was broadcasted) which was heavily influenced by Peter Laird, and some of its concepts would appear in Tales.
This is a very long story, that as far as I know, it’s incomplete and there is little hope for it to be ever finished. I do hope at some point Peter Laird takes advantage of that “18 issues a year” deal he made with Viacom and make it happen.
While both, Eastman and Laird were fans of Jack Kirby, it is very obvious in this run that Laird may have been even more. Case in point, the “Kurtzberg” hospital sequence. It’s not gonna be the last time we see Kirby inspired things in the book.
When the book starts, we get the idea that there was a time jump since the last time we saw these characters (1995), but when I saw Shadow so grown up, I realized how much time really passed. I mean, the turtles are technically still teenagers, compared to how much turtles live. But they are kind... 30 now?
Perhaps the most significant thing about this run is the Utrom non-invasion of Earth. Whenever I think of Laird’s writing, my mind goes back to this story. The way he looks at sci-fi is very positive (especially considering that the Alien visit happens right after 9-11). In a way, his writing is very similar to that of Jack Kirby, who would often dedicate pages to concepts and ideas that would make life cooler.
Jim Lawson is back, and luck us, he is being inked (and toned) by Laird and Talbot.
Perhaps the main problem with this title is the pacing of the story. As the book is bi-monthly, it takes forever for a ship to land on Earth (7 months). This is not unusual in indie comics, but it makes the first issue a bit uneventful.
I give these issues a score of 8.

Apple Annie’s Fruit Punch
This punch was delicious, fun and easy to make. It is the perfect punch for summer afternoons and picnics. I was afraid at first that it would be too strong for my guests, but it was very balanced once the sodas were added. The fresh fruit is also a nice touch. In addition to oranges, lemons, apples and raspberries, I added farm fresh blueberries. The spirit I used here was Laird's Applejack 86. It was strong enough to taste under all the juice, but a real apple brandy and not some jacked cider, weak with no taste.
See the recipe on my website.

Farm Updates
Tumblr media
So not so exciting news, New Jersey as it turns out is not the place you would want to open a distillery. At least not if you plan on making whiskey.
Their regulations require that you grow the grains in N.J. on YOUR FARM, that being a difficult task because the soil is not grain friendly!
Ever heard of Laird’s Apple Jack now you know why they are only distilling apples!
Another not so pleasant fact is that you cannot have more then 2000 gallons of waist water that can be quiet a problem.
Like the picture the osmosis and tranquility dream is on fire. I may have to give up the dream of owning the place and designing but I won’t give up the dream of creating my own alcohol.
Lets just say New Jersey is not being very encouraging. We will have to take to exploring all other options surrounding states and all.

Daily MCO Drink #110, MCO Day #101: JACK ROSE, made with 2 parts Laird’s Straight Apple Brandy, 1 part lemon juice, 1 bar spoon grenadine syrup, shaken over ice and strained. . You’d think this would be sweet and sour, but the applejack is the star of this drink and it will not be ignored. Rich notes of spicy apple tart, tempered with lemon and just that slight hint of sweetness to finish with. . This is the most famous drink to feature applejack, a spirit distilled from apples that is apparently the oldest distilled spirit in America. . Funnily enough, 3 years ago I met Lisa (@firstladyofapplejack) owner of Laird’s, the original makers of applejack, and she told me the product labeled Laird’s Applejack (40% ABV) is actually a blended spirit made with 35% apple brandy and 65% neutral corn spirit. . The one I use here, Laird’s Straight Apple Brandy (50% ABV) is made with 100% apples and aged a minimum of four years, and is apparently the original applejack before they came out with the blended version. . #applejack #applebrandy #lairdsapplejack #brandy #cocktails #jackrose #tipsyturvybrandy #tipsyturvycocktails #mytipsyturvy #dailyMCOdrink https://www.instagram.com/p/CCS5bBGJkNO/?igshid=z0rrybnmbhie

Jack Rose Cocktail - Thanksgiving, Gangsters & More
Tumblr media
The Jack Rose Cocktail Is One Of Six Basic Drinks For Your Home Bar
Want a drink with ties to the mob, Thanksgiving and the historical heights of home bars? Well, if you can settle for two out of three and a really tall tale to tell behind the bar, then the Jack Rose cocktail may be the Thanksgiving tipple to tribute the times along with the terrifying twist you're looking for.
Popular during the 1920s and again thru the 1950s, both home bar heydays, the Jack Rose drink recipe was listed as one of six basic cocktails in David Embury's 1948 bartending book The Fine Art Of Mixing Drinks. The five other essentials he included were the Daiquiri, Manhattan, Martini, Old Fashioned and the Sidecar.
Apple Brandy Is What Jacked Up The Pilgrims On Thanksgiving
Applejack is what gives the Jack Rose cocktail its Thanksgiving theme. Apple brandy a.k.a applejack a.k.a Jersey Lightning dates back to colonial times as a very popular drink with the pilgrims and is still produced today by Laird's, the nation's oldest licensed distillery, who have been making it ever since 1698.
Jacking, a term for freeze distillation, the process colonists used to concentrate the apple cider, is what puts the jack in applejack. However, it does not put the Jack in the (apple) Jack Rose cocktail as you'll see below.
History Of The Jack Rose Cocktail
The tie in with criminal gangsters may be questionable at best, but here are some of the arguments. It all has to do with the name of the cocktail itself. As you can imagine, tall tales abound as to the origin which may or may not actually be true.
Perhaps the most popular and definitely the most interesting theory involves a small time New York gangster known as Bald Jack Rose. The hat wearing hit man was accused of shooting Herman Rosenthal in a 1912 murder case which was considered the trial of the century at the time.
He became a stool pigeon as the star witness for the prosecutor exposing the corruption connection between police and organized crime. Famous and freed after his testimony, his favorite drink of applejack, lime juice and grenadine was dubbed the Jack Rose, which some claim he actually named himself to capitalize on his fame while in the catering business afterwards. The end.
Not so fast, here's a quick rundown on some of the other naming theories:
a) Jack Rose is simply a shortened abbreviation of apple jack and the rose color of the cocktail from the pomegranate juice.
b) “We had always assumed the Jack Rose's moniker was derived from its color, but some suggest it was named for the French general Jean-François Jacqueminot, for whom the rose is also named.” ~ Cocktail: The Drinks Bible for the 21st Century
c) An ancestor of the Laird family named Jack created it at the Colt's Neck Inn in New Jersey, which was originally owned by the applejack distillers. This one is absolutely false according to Lisa Laird-Dunn, a ninth generation descendent.
There are a couple more stories floating around crediting bartenders in both Jersey City and Newark, New Jersey bars as the drink's inventors, but with historians seemingly unable to agree, here are the ingredients to this simply delicious cocktail.
Jack Rose Cocktail Recipe:
2 oz Laird's Applejack (apple brandy)
1 oz lime juice
½ oz grenadine (pomegranate syrup)
Add ice and all the ingredients to a cocktail shaker. Shake thoroughly and strain into a chilled stemmed glass. Garnish with slice of lime.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Fact & Fiction mix in the drink world in a way I love, despite (or because of) my work in history. One of the earliest drinks in the Americas is something known locally in the Dominican Republican as mamajuana, a Taino tea named for the jug it was kept in (like the French “demijohn” or the Persian “qarabah” ➡️carboy). Originally a tea the Taíno made from botanicals like cinnamon, anise, cloves & milkberry. The alcoholic version is typically made by mixing this tea with rum, red wine, honey. But it wasn’t alcoholic until after Columbus introduced sugar cane to the Caribbean in the 15th C, changing the face of the world. I teach a @Yale seminar about what followed from Columbus’ introduction of sugar cane to the Americas: rum, slavery, globalism — and eventually, cocktails. The issue of global vs local has been on my mind a lot lately as I think about the difference between sense of place between spirits & cocktails. I’ve been playing around with a bottle of @Machuca, a Canadian liquor labeled “spiced rum,” but which I would call a mamajuana-liqueur. The founder, Joel Goor, confirms the mamajuana inspriation, if not the recipe, telling me Machuca will have no added color when it becomes available in the USA (it isn’t yet). That leads me to guess that the rich red color comes from hibiscus, but Im not sure. As with with every liqueur crossing my threshold, I introduced Machuca to various whiskies. I do this with people too, just so you know. One can escape this fate in my house if underage or not a drinker, but if you’re a bottle of something sweet, you’re going in a glass with a spirit at some point. Just saying. Then I tried it with the oldest U.S. spirit, @Lairdsapplejack. This was it. Laird’s apple brandy was the perfect support for the baking spice warmth of the Caribbean rum liqueur. Lemon juice brightened it & orange bitters added a softness. A barspoon of of honey syrup. When i was finished tinkering, I realized I’d built something like a Jack Rose, with Machuca subbing for grenadine. The Canadian Country Music Association Awards have wrapped for another year after a HUGE show in Calgary, AB on Sunday night.
Hosted by Dallas Smith and Billy Ray Cyrus, the broadcast was packed fantastic performances and big award wins. Smith lead the way for the men with wins for Male Artist of the Year and the coveted Entertainer of the Year trophy. And on the women’s side, Tenille Townes had a coming out party as she won Female Artist of the Year and added Single of the Year to the Songwriter and Video of the Year award wins she had already picked up over the weekend for her #1 single, Somebody’s Daughter.
The Apple Music Fans’ Choice award was presented to Brett Kissel, who called it the Stanley Cup in the industry and must have felt extra special in his home province. Group or Duo of the Year went to The Washboard Union, who dressed to match and may have been the best dressed trio in the building. The Reklaws won Album of the Year for Feels Like That in a moment that left them nearly speechless. And Jade Eagleson, winner of the 2017 Emerging Artist Showcase at Boots & Hearts won his first CCMA Award, taking home the Rising Star award.
But as much as this was an event to celebrate the winners, this was a night to celebrate Canadian country music. The performances throughout the show put a spotlight on some of the genres biggest stars. Bookended by Tim Hicks and Paul Brandt, the entire set on Global TV was a blast.
There were some great collaborations during the show as well. Meghan Patrick and Mitchell Tenpenny singing Wild As Me hit us in the feels. Dallas Smith with Dean Brody and MacKenzie Porter got us excited for the Friends Don’t Let Friends Tour Alone shows coming up. And Aaron Pritchett and Jess Moskaluke joined by Charlie Major to celebrate his induction into the Hall of Fame was a great moment.

Jersey Lightning
I'm not a big fan of this drink. It is another example of an apple brandy cocktail that is completely unbalanced with lime juice and no sugar. It's as if the bartender decided that apple brandy was sweet enough to handle two ounces of lime juice, which it is not. I get where it is going, though. Lightning implies a shockingly tart drink, and this one is. Jersey is the home state of Laird's distillery. That was why I had to use the last of my Apple Jack 86 (100% apple brandy) for this cocktail. Punt E Mes blew the drink out in the other direction, adding so much earthy bitterness. I broke down and added a half teaspoon of sugar syrup because I just couldn't take it. Here is the recipe as it is printed with notes to help fix the problems that this cocktail has.

What Are Bottled-in-Bond Spirits, and Why Are They Suddenly Everywhere?
Tumblr media
As American whiskey sales continue to grow year-over-year, due in part to what industry analysts call the “craft movement,” bottled-in-bond spirits have come back in a big way.
Jack Daniel’s released a 100-proof bottled-in-bond expression in August 2018. Heaven Hill Brands, the sixth-largest distilled spirits company in the U.S., has made bonded iterations of Old Fitzgerald, Mellow Corn, Heaven Hill Old Style, and Evan Williams white label for many years. New Riff Distilling, which opened in 2014, exclusively produces bottled-in-bond spirits. Meanwhile, Jim Beam has bonded versions of Old Grand-Dad, Jim Beam, and Old Overholt in its varied portfolio. Old Forester has an 1897 Bottled-in-Bond bourbon.
It’s not just whiskey, either. Laird’s has a straight bottled-in-bond apple brandy, and Privateer Rum released a BIB expression this past spring.
What does bottled-in-bond mean, exactly? The term sounds like catnip for consumers weaned on “artisanal” or “farm-fresh” marketing, but bottled-in-bond is a governmentally protected designation with pragmatic origins.
“It is a higher standard than single-malt Scotch, more protective than Cognac,” Jay Erisman, co-founder, New Riff Distilling, says
The Bottled-In-Bond Act of 1897, which was supported by the whiskey legend Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr., among others, ensured the quality of any spirit labeled “whiskey.”
“At the time, whiskey was largely sold in barrels or jugs which had questionable provenance,” Susan Wahl, group product director for Heaven Hill, says. Whiskey was often tainted with additives like neutral grain spirit, iodine, tobacco or worse, allowing shady brands to save a few bucks by selling adulterated and sometimes even dangerous whiskey to unsuspecting consumers.
The Bottled-In-Bond Act stipulated that the whiskey must be the product of one distilling season from one distillery, aged in a federally bonded warehouse for at least four years, and bottled at 100 proof. “In effect, it was America’s first consumer protection law, predating the Pure Food and Drug Act,” Wahl says.
“It’s rare that producers of a consumer good petition the government with ‘please, make the laws more restrictive,’ but that’s what happened,” Erisman says. “In the ensuing 121 years, BIB remains an unsurpassed guarantee of quality for aged brown spirits anywhere in the world.”
According to Catoctin Creek founder and general manager Scott Harris, contemporary whiskey trends are indeed what’s driving the BIB resurgence.
“The category was largely considered antiquated up until recently,” he says, with “a large influx of blended whiskies on the market. Bottled-in-bond shows that a whiskey has been completely, lovingly made ‘in-house,’ which sets it apart from people who are just blending-bottling.”
Of course, bottled-in-bond also has that certain throwback allure that many whiskey brands are looking for, rich with romanticism and Americana. The higher proof also makes BIB attractive to bartenders, as they can stand up to full-flavored cocktail ingredients in ways that 80-proof whiskeys don’t.
“Any bonded whiskey is great for cocktails due to the elevated proof,” Erisman says, adding that “the whiskey in the bottle will be very consistent, coming all from the same distilling season.”
Five Bottled-in-Bond Spirits to Try
Here are some recent entries into the BIB category to check out now.
Jack Daniel’s Bottled-in-Bond Tennessee Whiskey
Jack Daniel’s sells so much whiskey that it didn’t really need to add a bonded expression to its portfolio, but that’s just what the distillery did this past summer, as a travel retail exclusive. The whiskey comes in 1-liter bottles and offers fans of Jack a more robust drinking experience. The higher proof gives the whiskey an edge missing in regular Jack, but retains the characteristic sweetness of the original.
New Riff Distilling
New Riff is located in Newport, Ky., just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. The distillery’s entire portfolio is bottled-in-bond (except for its Single Barrel, which meets the requirements but is bottled at a higher proof). Erisman says that going entirely bottled-in-bond is a challenge for a new distillery because of the requirement that all the whiskey in the bottle must come from the same distilling season, but, for him, the inherent quality of the category made this the obvious choice.
Catoctin Creek Rabble Rouser Bottled in Bond Rye
In February 2019, Virginia’s Catoctin Creek will launch a new bottled-in-bond version of its Rabble Rouser rye whiskey. This 100 percent rye has actually qualified as bottled-in-bond since the distillery began releasing it, but, according to Harris, “nobody really knew or cared about the designation. Now that it is becoming more well understood, we decided to put the designation on the label for this product,” Harris says.
Kings County Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon
Many craft distilleries don’t release bottled-in-bond products because of the strict regulations, and the four-year age requirement is among the most difficult stipulation for small operations. Brooklyn’s Kings County Distillery, however, released perhaps its best product to date in 2017 with this BIB expression. It can be hard to find outside the distillery itself, but it’s well worth the effort.
A.D. Laws Bottled in Bond
This Denver distillery has four BIB expressions available: Two Grain Straight Bourbon, Straight Corn Whiskey, Straight Rye, and Four Grain Straight Bourbon. The distillery prides itself on a terroir that is “100 percent Colorado,” as it distills, bottles, and ages on site. It also sources grains and spring water from farmers and producers in the state.

20 Crazy Details About The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Bodies

20 Crazy Details About The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Bodies
by David I Sandhu
– on Aug 17, 2018
in Lists
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been a staple of pop culture for over three decades. With 6 movies, 6 TV shows, 6 comic series, over 50 video games, and 2 concert tours to date, the Turtles have been extremely successful and still remain popular to this day.
The history of the Turtles started back in 1984, when Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird where brainstorming while eating pizza and watching television. They came up with a crazy idea of bipedal turtles that were masters of the martial arts.
Taking inspiration from Frank Miller, Eastman and Laird self-published a one-off issue parodying, Daredevil, The New Mutants, Cerberus, and Ronin. Little did they realize that they’re off the cuff creation would go on to become the most significant cultural phenomenon to ever involve turtles.
They began to publish a monthly comic with Mirage Comics, but would eventually move to Image Comics, Archie Comics, and IDW Publishing.
The Archie version of the Turtles would go on to inspire the Turtle‘s first cartoon, which became a major hit in the ’80s and ’90s. This led to 3 movies, as well as a concert and a horrifying Christmas special that has been forgotten by most fans.
With so many different creators taking the time to work on the Turtles, there have been many interpretations. Their history, personalities, and abilities have changed countless times.
However, somethings never changed: Leonardo leads, Donatello does machines (that’s a fact, Jack), Raphael is cool but crude (gimme a break), Michelangelo is a party dude (Party).
With that said, here are the 20 Crazy Details About The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Bodies.
Advertising [x]
20 The Ooze That Created Them May Have Blinded Daredevil
The history of the Turtles has changed over time, and thus the infamous ooze that transformed them into warriors and gave them their powers has also been updated a number of times.
In its original incarnation, the mutagen ooze was created by a benevolent race of aliens known as the Utroms.
In other versions, it was a man-made creation that was developed by various organizations. While occasionally it was purposefully made, other times it was created by accident and was never intended to be used on living creatures.
In any case, the green ooze, in some form or another, came in contact with four baby turtles and transformed them into the mean, green fighting machines.
Taking inspiration from Frank Miller’s Daredevil run, Eastman has alluded to the idea that the ooze that created the Turtles is the same substance that blinded Matt Murdock, the Daredevil.
19 Their Shells are bulletproof
Advertising [x]
Some versions of the Turtles have small slim shells that minimize their cumbersome nature, while other versions see the Turtles with shells that are huge and bulky.
In the 2014 Michael Bay produced movie, their shells are perhaps the largest we have seen.
While size of their shells is integral to their new design, they also serve a particular purpose: they are bulletproof.
In the movie, Turtles’ shells are nuch denser and harder than normal shells.
Since they weren’t aware of how tough their shells were, at first the Turtles believed that a shot fired at their backs would end their lives. However, they soon learned, along with their assailants, that their shells were strong enough to withstand even bullets.
18 Leonardo Can Heal Himself And Others
Leonardo was always the most mature Turtle. He took Splinter’s lessons and knowledge more seriously and internalized them in away that the others could not or would not.
Splinter recognized this and saw him as a leader of the group. Because of this, he decided to teach Leo how to heal himself and others through the spiritual powers of Ninjutsu.
This is perhaps the closest thing to a superpower that any of the Turtles possess.
Leo is able to heal himself and others from physical injuries, diseases, and even poison.
While battling the estranged daughter of Splinter, Karai, Leo was poisoned with incurable venom. However, through the power of Ninjutsu, Leo was able to instantly cure himself of her poison and defeat her.
17 Raphael And Donatello Were Once Vampires
In the 2012 series, the gang came across many different challenges. One of the most interesting villains that they faced was Dracula.
In fact, they face off against most of the Universal Monsters. Werewolves, mummies and Frankenstein’s monster all take on the Turtles as Dracula attempts to conquer New York City.
In the course of bringing order to the Big Apple, Donnie and Raph are biten and become vampires.
This brings on a new transformation, as the two Turtles grow fangs and have a thirst for blood.
This is perhaps another example of how the Turtles are perhaps more human than they are turtle, since normal turtles do not have teeth. The Ninja Turtles already had teeth and then grew vampire fangs.
16 They Can Duck Into Their Shells
Turtles have the unique ability of hiding in their shell. Because they walk on all four legsand have a large shell, their skeletal structure is different from most animals.
Their spine runs along the top of the shell, which allows them to have a very long neck that can retract into the body. Their body is set up to support its weight differently than bipedal beings.
The Ninja Turtles have displayed this same ability, demonstrating that they must have a similar skeletal structure.
However, this would make it difficult for them to move, as the weight of their body, at least while standing upright, would not be supported by a curved spine.
This would suggest that they have a far more complex skeletal structure than a human or turtle.
15 Donatello Became Cyborg When His Body Was Destroyed
Advertising [x]
In the Image Comic series, Donatello went through some significant changes. After a battle against cyborgs, Donnie was shot and dropped out of a helicopter.
With his body significantly damaged, Donnie’s body merged with one of the cyborgs.
Because of this, there was a risk that Donnie could losing his mind and its control to the CPU in his brain.
After this, there were some changes to his personality, as he became more aggressive. There are several instances in which he has dispatched his enemies without feeling any remorse.
This has also made Donnie one of the more powerful of the Turtles, as he now had permanent armor and blasters that he could use.
14 They are Connected To The Spiritual Plane
On several occasions, the Turtles have had to mediate and connect to the spiritual plane. Whether this was to communicate with Splinter or to face their inner demons, the Turtles have always been able to tap into the other realm.
With the help of Splinter, these rambunctious teens have been able to create a strong connection to the other side.
This i has come in handy when they need guidance but were unable to reach their mentor.
When Splinter was missing, the Turtles stayed at a cabin with April O’Neil and Casey Jones. While there, Leonardo suggested that they mediate for several days in the forest to connect with Splinter and find him.
Thankfully, they were able to successfully connect with him. He then sent them on separate journeys to conquer their own personal challenges and face spiritual enemies.
The Turtles succeed and became stronger both in body and in mind because of this.

13 They May Be Warm Blooded
While this is more a fan theory, there is a lot of evidence to back it up. If the Turtles were still cold blooded, they would behave differently than what we have seen.
For instance, in numerous settings, we have seen condensed warm air exhaled from the Turtles. This only occurs with warm blooded animals because their internal heat source a lot warmer than the outside temperature.
If they were cold blooded, then their body temperature wouldn’t be much higher than their surroundings.
They use blankets instead of heating beds, they shiver, and they sweat. Sweat can only be formed by warm blooded mammals, which would mean that the turtles physiology is far more complex than we thought.
12 Leonardo Lost A Hand
During the 3rd volume of the comics, TMNT was bought by Image Comics. This 3rd volume is no longer considered canon, however, as it deviated from the previous stories and made significant changes to the main characters.
One of these changes involved Leonardo losing his left hand during a fight with King Komodo, a mutated Komodo dragon.
Although the Turtles have incredible healing abilities, they are incapable of growing new limbs.
However, even with the loss of his hand, and the immense pain he was in, Leonardo was not significantly deterred in battle, demonstrating his high pain tolerance.
For a time, Leo had a prosthetic hand that was given to him by Donatello, but ultimately he decided to stop using it.
Instead, he prefers to use a steal cap with a retractable blade.
11 They Are Red-eared Sliders
Advertising [x]
Before the ooze created the most famous green, pizza-eating ninjas, they were just pet turtles.
To be more specific, they were Red-eared Sliders. While the origin of the Turtles has changed a lot over the last few decades, this is one of the only elements that has remained the same in all incarnations of the Ninja Turtles.
Red-eared Sliders are the most popular pet turtles in the U.S., so it would make sense that the Turtles are the same breed, since they were originally pets.
After the’ 90s cartoon, the demand for pet turtles grew.
However, as the popularity of the show diminished, many of the pet turtles where abandoned by their former owners.
In London, many of these pets were left at London Park and, over the years, have grown to be the size of a dinner plate. This caused a major issue since these turtles began to harm the local ducks.
10 They Are Extremely Fast
Turtles are always depicted as being slow creatures. Though most owners of Red-eared Sliders know that theses clunky little reptiles can actually move pretty quickly.
However, the Turtles did not just grow large and maintain their natural abilities when the ooze transformed them – their abilities were enhanced.
This means that the Turtles now became much faster than normal turtles.
For bipedal creatures, they are incredibly fast and agile. This proves helpful in battle and when they must race to get the last slice of pizza.
It is even more impressive when you consider how heavy their shells must be.
They are fast enough to dodge lasers and catch up with moving cars, and thus they certainly dismantle the stereotype of being slow-moving creatures.
Plus, they can dance like no other.
9 They’ve Used Mutastones to transform and become more powerful
In perhaps the strangest iteration of the Turtles, Mutant Turtles: Superman Legend was a short-lived Japanese cartoon that featured the Turtles with new powers.
After being summoned by the spirit of light, Kris Mu, they were given special crystals called Mutastones.
These stones allowed each Turtle to transform into a super Power Ranger-like fighter for three minutes.
They were taller, sleeker, and supposedly more powerful.
However, if they needed more power, they could activate Saint Mutation. This, like a Megazord, combines all four Turtles in to one super turtle called Saint Mutant, a silver and blue like turtle with metallic wings.
The show only lasted for two episodes but they certainly offer Turtle fans a lot of new content. It is the most unique interpretation in the entire Turtle canon.
8 They’ve Turned Into Mutant Beasts
The idea of further mutation has been teased here and there. We have seen little iterations, but it was the classic ’80s/’90s show that tried to explore the second and final stage of the Turtles’ mutation.
While fighting Lord Dregg, an alien overlord created for the cartoon, the Turtles begin to experience a change in their mutation.
At random, they begin turn into giant, beast-like turtles with lighter skin and pointy claws. In fact, they actually resemble the behemoth in Michael Bay’s Ninja Turtles movie.
Their mind remains the same but they become far stronger and clumsier than their normal form.
With Splinter’s help, they are able to tame their inner mutation and bury it away after a few episodes.
7 They Are Masters Of Stealth
Advertising [x]
To be a ninja, one needs to be able to blend into their surroundings and become as stealthy as possible.
This has to be difficult for giant green turtles adorned with bright colored bandanas. However, somehow the Turtles can become virtually invisible in ways that would seem impossible.
In The Secret of the Ooze, Raph helps Kato join the Foot Clan at an open try-out in broad daylight. One of the challenges is to remove as many bells as he can in 10 seconds from a mannequin without making any sounds, shrouded in smoke.
While this seems like a difficult task, as soon as the smoke is covering them, Raph is able to sneak into the room, remove every singe bell, deliver it to Kato, and sneak back out.
6 They Can Play The Guitar
In the ’90s, the Ninja Turtles were doing a lot of crazy things. Vanilla Ice showed us that they could dance and the 1994 Christmas Special showed us that they could sing reggae inspired Christmas songs.
However, the craziest thing to come out of the ’90s was the Coming Out of Their Shells Tour, where jean vest-wearing Ninja Turtles sang songs and shredded their guitars for audiences around the country.
Complete with a power ballad sung by a wise and contemplative Splinter, the Turtles rocked the stage.
However, perhaps the strangest part was that the Turtles where able to play guitar at all.
Guitar chords are played with three to four fingers, but the Turtles only have three fingers on each hand.
5 They’re Resistant To Cold
When turtles get cold, their metabolism slows down. Reptiles do not have the ability to regulate their body heat, so their body’s temperature matches the environment that they’re in.
When in freezing temperatures, turtles will slow down and hibernate until it warms up. Turtles can even freeze if they’re in frozen water and thaw out later.
However, the Ninja Turtles have been shown to wear clothing to keep them warm.
When it’s cold, they’re able to run around and fight. None of that is indicative of how a turtle should behave in cooler temperatures.
The mutation has allowed the Turtles to regulate body heat and withstand the cold to prevent them from hibernating.
4 They’re Extremely Agile
The Turtles have a lot of layers, and what stands out to most are their different and distinctive personalities.
However, every single one of them has been practicing and mastering a skill set in the martial arts since they could walk.
The Turtles are highly skilled individuals and are thus masters in their field.
Consequently, their bodies are toned and conditioned well beyond the abilities of an average man or turtle.
Despite their awkward-looking appearance, the Turtles are quite agile and acrobatic, which allows them to be as effective and as mobile as possible in their battles.
3 Half Of Raphael’s Face Was Blown Off
Advertising [x]
When Archie Comics took over TMNT in the ’80s, readers got a glimpse into Raph’s future, as they soon noticed that his left eye was missing.
During a time traveling adventure, the Turtles discover that future Raph lost his eye during a fight with Shredder, Verminator X, and Armaggon.
However, it is later revealed that in every possible future, Raph ends up losing his eye.
In the Image Comics run, Raph unfortunately had an even worse fate. While messing with a defeated cyborg, half of Raph’s face was blown off.
For a time, he wore Casey Jones’ mask to cover his disfigurement. However, he later settled on wearing an eye patch.
2 They Can Reproduce
After all the mutations that the Turtles have gone through, it seems most logical that they should not be able to reproduce, as the ooze probably made them infertile.
We’ve also never seen a direct offspring of any of the Turtles.
However, towards the end of TMNT’s Mirage Comics run, Michelangelo becomes romantically involved with Seri, a Styracondon princess.
The Styracodons are Dinosaur-like alien species from the plant Nurgostu.
After their relationship became more intimate, Seri presented Michelangelo with some eggs, claiming that they are their children.
The fate of the eggs and Seri and Michelangelo’s relationship has not been resolved yet, as volume 4 of the series has not been written.
However, if it is revealed that the eggs do hatch and that the children survive, then this will be the first example of the Turtles having any offspring.
1 They Eat A Lot Of Food
It always seems like the Turtles are eating. They are constantly awaiting their next pizza order and munching on various snacks.
On average, a Red-eared Slider can go up to 3 days without food. They do not need a lot of food to survive, but their lives are predominately slow and not very active.
A clear difference between other Red-eared Sliders and the Turtles is that the Turtles are extremely active.
If they are not fighting Shredder or Krang, they are practicing their Ninjutsu.
Considering their size, lifestyle, and the fact that they are teenagers, they require a lot of food to provide them with enough energy to fight.
