Except... the plate of food is untouched. S-01 is exactly where Gaster left him yesterday, as if he hasn't moved at all.

“S-01, look at me when I talk to you.”

The little monster is curled up into a ball and is clutching his head. As Gaster steps closer, he realizes S-01 is muttering something to himself.

“bad, bad, bad, bad i was b-b-bad, i’m s-s-sorry, i....”

“S-01, I thought you would know better by now than to ignore me. Look at me.”

S-01 continues shivering, clutching his skull. Now that Gaster looks closer, he can see the little notches dug out of his skull under the pointed tips of his phalanges, a few drops of red leaking from them.

“such a dirty, dirty, filthy toy, b-b-bad—“

“You are being ridiculous,” Gaster snarls. “You dare to disobey me, you worthless—

Gaster pauses when he catches sight of something dark dripping down his femur. Something red. Was he picking at that most recent crack on his inner femur again? It’s never going to heal if he keeps messing with it, and if it doesn’t heal Gaster doesn’t get to hurt him again. With a frustrated huff, Gaster yanks up the thin gown to see where S-01 must have picked at the recent wound.

And the snarl drops off of Gaster’s face.

The small monster’s pelvis is dripping blood from dozens of deep scratches, gouges the same width of S-01’s pointed fingers.

S-01 pathetically curls in on himself further as his pelvis is exposed, still clutching at his head. Gaster looks at his experiments eye sockets to find them nearly empty, his eyelights drawn to tiny pinpricks that have nearly faded entirely.

“d-dirty... disgusting, p-pathetic, stupid little fucktoy...” The words are a weak wheeze, as though he’s using the last breath in his ribcage.

“S-01,” Gaster hisses, a bout of anger boiling up that he can’t quite explain. “Answer me. Now.”

“i d-did it wr-wrong again, i m-m-messed up, i’m— i’m s-s-so s-s-sorry, pl-... please....” The pitiful monster’s breath catches on each word, his phrases hardly coherent at all anymore.

“I told you to eat your food,” Gaster presses, ignoring the inexplicable pang in his soul as S-01 begins to dig his pointed fingers into his own skull again. “Why did you disobey me? Speak up.”

“d-dirty... dirty, u-useless t-toys don’t g-get to eat,” S-01 sobs like the words have been torn from the depths of his soul. “i’ll never eat again, i’ll n-n-never do it again!”

Oh. Well, Gaster can’t say the behavior doesn’t make sense.

*“Worthless fucktoy,” Gaster snarled. “Worthless. I gave you one instruction, and you couldn’t even follow that?”*

Shit.

It was yesterday, and S-01 hadn’t eaten in days. Gaster made sure of it. He gave S-01 a small amount of food and instructed him to only eat an even smaller amount of it, curious whether the instinct to fulfill his basest needs would override his fear of punishment.

Gaster knew his instinct to survive would eventually win, but he enjoyed the resulting punishment immensely nonetheless.

“i r-*ruined* it,” S-01 whimpers. “i ruined e-*everything*, i ruined it all, i was b-bad, i...”
