it's on internet archive so here are the particulars: the kingfisher book of scary stories is also published as "faces in the dark: a book of scary stories" and the illustrator is peter bailey, whose work does bear something of a resemblance to geraldine mccaughrean's. the book has a mixture of tales written for the purpose of the anthology, older stories with multiple versions, and older stories given a framing story that would fit the anthology. the story about the black dog was called "widdershins" (probably the first time i ever read that word...no wonder im so obsessed with it):
the story about the lantern is the title story, "a face in the dark":
and although there are several other still really great stories in here, the piece de resistance, the story that made it hard to find this book for twenty-some years, the story about the blanket, is called "the oddment":
some of the other stories include "the bravest man in the world," a funny story about a guy who's not scared of skeletons, skeletons in canoes, or skeletons riding skeleton horses, but IS super scared of spiders; a "loathly lady" story about a creepy bone-eating lady who if you do everything she says turns into a beautiful princess, laily-worm style; and the final story in the book, which has a 'magnus-archives-for-new-readers' feel to it that i very much enjoy.
Is the missing book you're thinking of "The Kingfisher Book of Scary Stories"?
youtube
#i feel like somebody (lora?) might have already suggested this one but i dismissed it too quick because i didnt recognize the pic online#but also the stories i remember clearly from it were not the stories that are most ghostly so it makes sense they wouldnt be the ones#that would have a lot of pictures floating around#oh what a feeling of satisfaction to wake up and at 7am solve a twenty-year-old mystery#if every other thing about my day sucks i will still have this: the day i found (we found!) The Book

The Laily Worm and the Machrel of the Sea
Laily Worm
“I was but seven year auld When my mither she did dee; My father married the ae warst woman The warld did ever see.”
“For she has made me the laily worm, That lies at the fit o’ the tree, An’ my sister Masery she’s made The machrel of the sea.”
“An’ every Saturday at noon The machrel comes to me, An’ she takes my laily head An’ lays it on her knee, She kaims it wi’ a silier kaim, An’ washes’t in the sea.”
“Seven knights hae I slain, Sin I lay at the fit of the tree, An’ ye war na my ain father, The eighth ane ye should be.”
“Sing on your song, ye laily worm, That ye did sing to me.” “I never sung that song but what I would sing it to thee.”
He sent for his lady, As fast as send could he: “Whar is my son that ye sent frae me, And my daughter, Lady Masery?”
“Your son is at our king’s court, Serving for meat an’ fee, An’ your daughter’s at our queen’s court, The queen’s maiden to be.”
“Ye lee, ye lee, ye ill woman, Sae loud as I hear ye lee; My son’s the laily worm, That lies at the fit o’ the tree, And my daughter, Lady Masery, Is the machrel of the sea!”
She has tane a siller wan’, An’ gi’en him strokès three, And he’s started up the bravest knight That ever your eyes did see.
She has ta’en a small horn, An’ loud an’ shrill blew she, An’ a’ the fish came her untill But the machrel of the sea: “Ye shapeit me ance an unseemly shape, An’ ye’s never mare shape me.”
He has sent to the wood For whins and for hawthorn, An’ he has ta’en that gay lady, An’ there he did her burn.

hello! any ironstrange, frostiron/ironfrost or strangefrost/froststrange fics? or the 3 of them? thanks x
ironstrange:
hey, stephen (i've been holding back this feeling) (ao3) - hopelessrdj
Summary: Tony Stark and Stephen Strange have never met each other before until the day every student at their university gets forced into attending one co-educative class not connected to their major. Both geniuses end up in the music department and in order to make it more interesting they come up with a competition between the two of them.
Holding Hope (ao3) - Beau16
Summary: A one night stand leaves Tony with an unexpected result. Tony's not sure he can raise a kid on his own, not with his own upbringing ringing in his ears.
Rhymes in the Atlas (ao3) - EaSnowPw
Summary: Tony Stark has a crush. And he keeps messing up.
Three Little Words (ao3) - Sanctum_Sanctorum
Summary: Stephen Strange has been dating Tony Stark for six months now and he's never been happier. He wants to give his boyfriend the date night to remember but what do you give a billionaire who has everything when you have nothing left to give? And what about those three little words that Stephen has wanted to say to him for months?
I love you.
froststrange:
Getting Warmer (ao3) - surveycorpsjean
Summary: Loki flirts his way into Stephen's bedroom, silver tongued and seductive, and Stephen is ever so weak to say no.
It's just casual. No strings attached. Zero commitments.
Stephen is totally fine with this.
The Amendment (ao3) - Laily
Summary: Doctor Stephen Strange and Prince Loki Odinson have been blessed with a beautiful baby boy. They think it is now time to try for another baby, but as always life, other stuff and sheer bad luck gets in the way.
The Contract (ao3) - Laily
Summary: An awkward dinner party brings Doctor Stephen Strange and Loki of Asgard together; though ill-at-ease, still they seek the company of each other, being the odd ones out. One wakes up somewhat rested, the other in the worst pain of his life.
Thor is not a happy camper.
You want us to sign the WHAT? (ao3) - oceankat8
Summary: What if Civil War happened about a year after Ragnarok? What if the Revengers had finally made their way home, only to find out that Earth may not be where they belong after all? What if some dumbass named Ross tells Thor to sign the accords and actually expects him to just.. like.. do that? Well, let's find out shall we?
Loki/Tony/Stephen:
Custody (ao3) - Avengers_Whore
Summary: He couldn’t bind himself to an alpha who’d nearly killed him even if that alpha was the father of his two pups. He’d sworn off alphas and was single-mindedly determined to raise his sons by himself. Until Stephen and Loki had wormed their way into his heart.
High Hopes (ao3) - kirah123jm
Summary: Civil War broke Tony. He has the Arc Reactor back, his nightmares always consist of his Ex-Fiance killing him. His panic attacks are worst then ever. All he wants to do is see his Psudeo mom. But of course Tony can't even do that. He learns she is dead, he is the Soul Stone, and he has two soulmates who have to train him to protect the nine realms from a purple grape.
I've Done Stranger Things (ao3) - White_Rabbits_Clock
Summary: Loki returns to Earth with the intention of guarding his lover from various mortal perils and keep the finger on the pulse of the cosmos by doing magical business on the side while he looks for a suitable place to raise his brood of extensively traumatized children.
Except: while he was gone, Anthony Edward Stark's comrades abandoned him, and are now back to be even more irritating than they were first time around via something called Second Chance Initiative and are now back living in the Compound with Tony. It's damned inconvenient, really. Loki was thinking that Tony would be in the occasional danger, leaving him plenty of time conduct business, but now he'll have to keep an eye on vermin after all. Ah, well. Maybe he'll get rid of his debt faster like this.

some favorites: - ellie bryan’s album ‘am i born to die’ - the anaïs mitchell and jefferson hamer child ballads album - kate rusby, in general, particularly the albums ‘awkward annie’ and the ‘the girl who couldn’t fly,’ also partial to her version of ‘i am stretched on your grave’ - old blind dogs, in general, especially partial to their version of ‘is there for honest poverty’ - random rec - the spriguns’ ‘laily worm’ is wild
Come on people, let’s talk folk music! Give me recommendations!
What are your top live Pete Seeger performances? Favourite Child ballads? Been loving any recordings of Irish drinking songs recently? Best Odetta albums? Any Scottish Jacobite rising songs you love? Top Ewan MacColl compositions? Appalachian murder ballads you’re obsessed with?

Seeing Havardr and then Kaigar's story of her brother becoming a tuna, reminded me of the Laily Worm and the Mackerel of the Sea. Were you inspired by that perchance?
Hello i wasn't inspired that and i actually never heard of The Laily Worm and the Mackerel of the Sea. I just looked it up and its really interesting. But mainly my inspiration for them is just a mix other random things art and old cartoons or comics like Asterix and Vicky the Vikings

"And she took up a silver horn
And blew it over the sea,
And all the fish came to her,
Save the proud mackerel of the sea.
Then up and spoke the proud mackerel,
The mackerel of the sea,
“You've changed me once an unseemly shape—
You'll never more change me!”"
