Happy Birthday, Sara Lahti! (January 16)
Sara is a voice actress, known mainly for voicing Maggie Mui in R.O.D the TV and Chuukou Kyocho in Ikki Tousen. She is also a podcast host of Creatrix Culture and the creator of the YouTube channel, TikTok, Facebook and Instagram pages, the Sara L Show.
Jessica D. Stone first met her in person at Anime Expo '05 nearly twenty years ago (in the year of our Lord 2025, I swear, we are NOT old; like animated characters who rarely age, it shall be a well-known fact that voice actors age backwards - dead serious, it's true). She is nothing less than beautiful, hilarious, a great actress and a wonderful content creator.
It's awesome to have reconnected with her through social media (which was barely a thing in the ancient history of Primitive 2005, so like, yeah, our ages are showing).

A list of Finnish productions of The Addams Family the musical (incl. professional, community, and school productions)
2013: Tampereen Työväen Teatteri, Tampere [professional]
2015: Oulun teatteri, Oulu [professional]
2016: Tiirismaan lukio, Lahti [high school]
2019: Musiikkiteatterikoulu Skene, Helsinki [community]
2019: Kaarinan Nuorisoteatteri, Kaarina [community]
2020: Rantasalmen Nuorisoteatteri, Rantasalmi [community]
2021: Vaskivuoren lukio, Vantaa [high school]
2021: Jyväskylän kaupunginteatteri, Jyväskylä [professional]
2021: Munkkiniemen yhteiskoulu, Helsinki [high school]
2022: Teatterikorkeakoulu, Helsinki [university]
2022: Kotkan Kaupunginteatteri, Kotka [professional]
2023: Seinäjoen kaupunginteatteri, Seinäjoki [professional]
2023: Viikin normaalikoulu, Helsinki [high school]
2024: Salon lukio, Salo [high school]
2024: Ruokolahden Musiikkiteatteriyhdistys, Ruokolahti [community]
2024: Keravan lukio, Kerava [high school]
2024: Porin lukio, Pori [high school]
2025: Eurajoen teatterinuoret, Eurajoki [community] [upcoming]
2025: Vantaan Näyttämö, Vantaa [community] [upcoming]
2025: Turun Kaupunginteatteri, Turku [professional] [upcoming]
Just to prove that I'm not exaggerating when I say everybody has done it here already. I'm not even 100% sure this list is complete, but it's what I could find. That's 20 Finnish Addamses so far, if you didn't count them already. (Let me know if you know about other productions.)
For context: in Finland, the high school musical theatre scene is not nearly as robust as it is in the US. Only some high schools have musical programmes. So, looking at this and keeping in mind that some of the community productions have been produced in co-operation with local high schools... I don't know how many high schools do musicals around Finland, but looking at this, it certainly feels like at least a third of them have done The Addams Family already.
For further context: in 2024, Finland had 5 619 399 inhabitants. That means we've got one production of The Addams Family the musical for every 280 970 Finns. Sure, the theatres would run out of space fast if every single one of those people decided to go see their allocated Addamses – but when you substract babies, the people that are not interested in musicals at all, and the people who hate The Addams Family in particular... I just think there's plenty of The Addams Family available for everyone interested, even without any professional, publicly funded theatres investing their resources in this particular musical.
Searching for all the Finnish Addamses, I noticed one of the high school productions was credited as one single student's high school theatre diploma. Of course, that student had other people onstage with them – but if a high school can licence this so one singular student can get their diploma, it must be a very cheap musical to licence indeed. Which is great for community and school theatres, really! I see why they want to do it; it's got plenty of roles for a variety of performers and fun aesthetics. Good for them for getting to do a musical without bankrupting themselves.
But the professional theatres, man. I really have nothing but disdain for them, and for this musical when staged in a professional setting. It's simply not a good musical, not even an okay one, nor is it a good adaptation of The Addams Family. It's a bland, boring, heteronormative La Cage aux Folles ripoff, and while it may be a good vehicle for community theatres to show off their talents, for professionals... Choosing to stage this particular musical has nothing to do with artistic ambition or wanting to give the audience something interesting; it's all about choosing something cheap based on a familiar IP to get butts on seats.
Which would be okay for a private for-profit theatre, but when you're doing it with taxpayer money... I just don't think it's a really great look. I know times are hard and the theatres need to make their money because the public funding doesn't cover all costs, but even so. Staging the 20th Finnish production of The Addams Family after several nearby-ish high school and community theatres have already done it... Was there seriously nothing else at the bottom of the barrel for them to scrape?

An introduction to VR multiple units, part 5: Sm6
The Sm6 Allegro. When I started this series about our multiple units, I first thought I would cover the Sm6 in the "operated for others" -series, then thought I would leave it out altogether... but events overtook my plans and now I'm introducing them as VR's own multiple units, although they are not yet in operation as VR trains.
Tumblr media
An Sm6 unit on the Kerava-Lahti line, currently the only bit of high-speed rail in Finland, 2011. Teemu Peltonen, Vaunut.org.
Since the 1990s, two daily return trains had been operated between Helsinki and Saint Petersburg, Russia: the Sibelius, which used VR carriages, and the Repin, which used RŽD carriages. In 2006, the two rail operators decided to replace the locomotive-hauled trains, which took five hours to make the trip, with jointly-owned high-speed trains. For this purpose, a new jointly-owned subsidiary Karelian Trains was established.
Tumblr media
Two Sm6's during pre-service entry test runs at Vainikkala, the border station between Finland and Russia, with the locomotive-hauled St. Petersburg train Sibelius on the right. Lari Nylund, Vaunut.org.
After a round of tenders, Karelian Trains opted for the Pendolino design (already used by VR in the form of the Sm3) from Alstom in 2007, with four units to be delivered in 2010 (there was also an option for two additional units, which was never taken up). Although the exterior design of the new Sm6 units was almost identical to the Sm3, in terms of technology they feature numerous improvements compared to the older class, and were outfitted to operate both on the Russian and Finnish electric systems. Due to the small difference in gauge between the two countries (Russia uses 1520 mm but Finland 1524 mm) the trains were given near-unique gauge of 1522 mm.
Tumblr media
Interior of the Sm6's first-class carriage as delivered. Otto Karikoski, Wikimedia Commons.
Branded Allegro, the new Sm6 units begun operations in December 2010, cutting the travel time between Helsinki and St. Petersburg to 3½ hours. In addition to services offered on Sm3 units, the Sm6 has (or perhaps more accurately had) a space for the border patrol to use, as passport control was done en-route on the train, and a kid's playroom. The original grey-dominated interiors were replaced by new, more colourful blue designs in 2018-2019.
The new interiors were not in use for long before the Covid-19 pandemic caused for passenger train services between Finland and Russia to be suspended in March 2020. The Allegro services were restored in December 2021 (the Helsinki-Moscow sleeper train Tolstoy, however, was not), and ran for less than four months until closed again in March 2022 after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. (VR subsequently stopped freight traffic to Russia too - other Finnish rail operators continue to serve freight to and from Russia, however).
Tumblr media
Second-class carriage in the post-2019 look. VR.
After March 2022, the four Sm6 units languished at VR's Ilmala depot in Helsinki, without maintenance as RŽD refused to make any payments for their share in Karelian Trains (which, although jointly Finnish-Russian owned, was registered in Finland). In March 2023, when Finnish prime minister Sanna Marin visited Kiev, Ukrainian Railroads requested the Sm6 units be handed over to them, but nothing ever came of this. Instead, in December 2023, when Karelian Trains was on the brink of bankruptcy due to RŽD not paying their share of the company's bills, VR bought out Karelian Trains and took over the Sm6 units.
The trains will be given a thorough technical refit, which will include removal of the systems to operate with Russian electrification, and will enter services on routes within Finland in 2025. How they will be branded is unknown, though a VR representative said in an interview they will not be called Allegro. Presumably this will make the Sm6 the first VR rolling stock class to be fully painted in the new livery.

My Desucon Frostbite 2025 report
Although it's been a year since my last convention, I've been attending Desucon and Desucon Frostbite religiously for more than a decade by now, so I have the whole con experience down to a routine. While the convention these days may not be as exciting as it once was, I still very much enjoy going twice a year!
Here's a day-by-day recollection of what I got up to under the cut since it got long.
My schedule for this year was mostly the same as it's been previous years, except I went to more programs than usual. On Friday I listened to an introduction to Nendoroids. I haven't been collecting any since a friend of mine gifted me the NO. 6 pair in 2023, or I found Utsutsu at the Desucon Frostbite flea market in 2019. The friend I was with now stopped collecting even longer ago, but there wasn't much else to do on Friday evening. Since we weren't new to Nendoroids we didn't expect to get much out of the program, but we did have one distant dream for there to be a mention of the SB69 Cyan Nendoroid. The presenter was very enthusiastic and had a great stage presence so it was fun to listen to her talk. I was a little grossed out hearing there are currently around 2700 of those little guys and then a miracle happened - one of the slides had Cyan on it!!!! We both squealed!!!!!!!!! 10/10 presentation, would fangirl over Cyan again.
Tumblr media
The main event on Saturday was the guest of honor program, an interview with Tsubasa Yonaga. I mostly associate him with Nagisa from Free! and not much else, so I wasn't super excited to have him in Finland, but he was very cute and fun, as seiyuu's tend to be. During the opening ceremony on Friday he knew how to play along with the hosts by accepting a challenge to try Finnish/Lahti specialties (a Runeberg torte, a semla (I can't believe that's the English name for laskiaispulla) and a 'nikumagu' "meat cup", a Lahti city specialty of kebab meat in a cup (don't ask, I've never tried it and never will). Also, going to the sauna and ice swimming, which he seemed somewhat concerned over (as he did over the meat cup, the way the audience laughed at it).
During the interview I liked how he kept looking and waving at the audience, making heart signs with his hands, aiming to connect with his fans. As for what he shared, he told us he decided to become a seiyuu after being bullied and developing a complex about his voice in elementary school, discovering the profession when his teacher wrote down the kanji for seiyuu (lit. excelling with your voice) and realizing he could turn his weakness into a strength/weapon. He revealed his good taste as he mentioned Akira Ishida as his favourite seiyuu growing up and one of his current role models. He said he got the role of Nagisa without an audition, which was apparently the case for most of the cast on Free! except Haruka, and during recordings Mamoru Miyano would be a (fun) nuisance (as expected). A performance he got a lot of praise for and was particularly happy with was Nagisa during the 2nd season of Free! when he opens up about his feelings. A role he'd like to play that he hasn't already would be a mascot from Precure, or a last-boss type villain. He wasn't able to pick a favourite role of his as they were all equally precious to him. Something relating to the production side of things I found interesting was that recordings for games are done individually, as opposed to groups like anime recordings are, which makes them more challenging when you can't play off anyone else's lines and presence. Lastly, Yonaga wasn't (politely) exactly thrilled to visit Finland in January, cautiously mentioning how everyone had told him it's a nice place to visit in the summer, but said that the views were pretty and that Suomenlinna (which he was brought to before the con) was impressive. Unfortunately his wishes for what to do before leaving were seeing the Northern Lights or Santa Claus, and those things are NOT happening in Lahti. Either way, I hope he enjoyed his time because he was a very nice guest!
Tumblr media
The other program we went to on Saturday was a talk about vampires in anime and manga, because who doesn't love vampires? It started with a brief history lesson and overview of the most significant and popular works that molded the genre/myth in Western literature/popular culture and how it was brought over and continued to develop on its own in Japan. I thought it was interesting how certain trends appeared in the West and Japan at the same time independently of each other, like the more sympathetic/tortured soul portrayals found in Interview with the Vampire and Poe no Ichizoku, or the high-school romances with vampires popularized by Twilight, which were apparently also central in Vampire Knight, which started publishing right before the first Twilight book came out. The presenters spent most of the time going over different works like those and I became inspired to pick up a bunch of them, such as Vassalord. (which I rarely hear mentioned, but when I do, it's always someone's personal favourite), Trump (bad "Trump trigger warning" jokes aside, the art looks very nice), the Blood franchise (especially the CLAMP one, I think my boy Watanuki will make an appearance somewhere there) and DRCL Midnight Children (as the art is to die for). Goddamn, vampire works are hot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Saturday evenings, me and my friend have a tradition of trying out different restaurants in Lahti for the brief period of time they're in business. This year we went to Santa Fé, as it was close to our hotel. It was a bit pricey for what it was, but had good food and drinks.
A new thing we tried out this year was going to a café for a takeaway drink on Saturday and a proper breakfast on Sunday morning, which we think will become a new tradition for us!
Tumblr media
Back to our old traditions, we always attend the AMV-competition on Sunday mornings, and this year was no different. The quality was very good and I was particularly happy to see AMV's for Mononoke and 3-gatsu no Lion right at the start. My favourite AMV might've been this mashup with NGE and Lain, even though I'm not usually a fan of combining two different shows like that. The editing looked technically challenging/tedious, fit both shows, was clearly inspired by/partially lifted right from NGE, but complementary and additive, with its own twist as well. Then I don't know how to feel about the winner of the audience vote, since that was a DMMD jumpscare. I'll never escape that BLVN, but at least I'm in this boat together with my friend, as we have a shared history with that game.
Tumblr media
Soon after, and right before the end of the con, it was time for my most anticipated program, about the Monogatari girls and what makes a well written female character. My expectations were met, the presenter knew what she was talking about, had an academic angle and was actually analyzing the characters and the work. She talked mostly about Hanekawa and Nadeko and chara-type based writing as opposed to narrative-based writing, as described by Hiroki Azuma in his book Otaku: Japan's Database Animals. It's interesting how Monogatari keeps (at least trying) having its cake and eating it too, providing fanservice and sexualizing its characters, but turning it around by revealing something human about them as it does so. I never think about any of the main girls as "bad" people (in the sense of not being nice to be around), which is something the presenter said about both Hanekawa and Nadeko, but as a positive, since that makes them great female characters to her, as they're allowed to be flawed and fully fledged with interests and hobbies and lives that move forward even when they're not on screen. I also liked the way the presenter compared Monogatari to other works and had specific and appropriate examples to back up her claims. She did a good job narrowing the topic down when there's so much you could say and get into, but at the same time I would've loved hearing more about some of her claims and opinions (what do you mean Nadeko Medusa is one of the weaker arcs??????).
Tumblr media
During the ending ceremony Yonaga reported having tried all three foods (the semla filling was jam), and enjoying them (even the weird lihamuki/nikumagu meat one), but skipping the ice swimming and sauna.
The most exciting part of the ending ceremony is always the announcement of the next guest, and this time around I was super excited to hear Kamome Shirahama will be attending Desucon 2025 in June! I haven't been keeping up with Tongari Boushi no Atelier / Witch Hat Atelier, but I adore her and I'm super excited to see and hear what she has to say!!!
Tumblr media
Some other fun things about the weekend include me dressing up in kimono and hakama for the first time for a con, which was super fun! A little stressful too, since I had to bring more stuff with me than usual and spend more time putting it on compared to regular clothes, but absolutely worth it and I'm planning on doing it again in the future :)
Tumblr media
And then finally here's my con loot!! I always love getting some manga and this time I'm happy with my investment in a CLAMP oneshot for 2€. I got some more washi tapes for my collection and after sleeping on it, I got a sticker book with a Dungeon Meshi design that fits my aesthetics and doesn't scream "anime merch" in a way I love for usable products like these.
Thanks for reading all of this, or even just part of my report as it got obscenely long. I can't wait for the next convention in five months!

Ilta-Sanomat has more news from ongoing discussions about Finland's 2025 state budget. Some adjustments are necessary, according to the Finance Ministry, with the state needing to save billions of euros more than previously planned.
The government parties are mostly agreed on that. But the devil is in the details.
IS says that a week from now negotiations will begin in earnest, but that their sources believe the savings will have to be found among the "upper middle class".
Up to now, most cuts have fallen on benefits for younger and lower-income groups, such as the unemployed. There may not be much more to cut at this point among those groups.
Deductions currently utilised by many better-off taxpayers might be on the chopping block, including the deduction for household expenses. That can be used to reduce tax bills if you have work done around the home.
It has previously been reported that VAT is likely to increase as well, as a one percentage point increase would raise 615 million euros and fill a big chunk of the budget shortfall.
There is also a continuing debate over cuts to pensions. The Finns Party would be willing to make cuts in pension spending, but the National Coalition Party is opposed.
Flying Tappara
Iltalehti asks Tampere hockey club Tappara why they are planning to fly a 295km trip to Kuopio this weekend as they head into the Liiga playoff semifinals.
A win there would put them 3-0 up in the series, with four wins needed to secure progress to the final.
The club says it is chartering a plane at a cost of around 80,000 euros in order to maximise recovery time for the players.
IL wonders if that might conflict with the club's environmental programme, but the team's CEO says that recovery time for the players between crucial playoff games is more important, and that they would not fly these distances during the regular season.
Oulu team Kärpät also flew direct to their away games in Mikkeli, in the opposite south-eastern corner of the country, in the previous round. That's a distance of 445km, making a very long drive for any hockey team travelling after a game finishes late.
In the semi-finals Kärpät will fly again to Lahti, arriving via the Helsinki-Vantaa airport.
They do normally travel by bus to Kuopio, Vaasa and Jyväskylä, the closest Liiga locations to Oulu. But longer trips are made by train or plane.
Kärpät do, however, try to offset the emissions by buying credits linked to carbon sinks in Finnish commercial forests.
Mister Teksti TV
Helsingin Sanomat carries a report on an Yle colleague, Matti Rämö, who is single-handedly responsible for keeping Yle's teletext service "Teksti-TV" running.
In a piece headlined "Mister Teksti-TV" HS outlines the continued popularity of the service, which draws around 1.2 million users a week, and an average of 780,000 every day.
Commercial broadcasters MTV and Nelonen have recently announced plans to close down their teletext services.
That's not exceptional worldwide: the United Kingdom, which was the first to introduce the technology, now has no functional teletext operations.
HS reports that makes Rämö sad, as he's a strong believer in the social usefulness of text-based news served through a television screen.
At 62 he is nearing retirement, and more time cycling and watching SSC Napoli (although HS does not mention either hobby).
Rämö remains confident that Teksti-TV will continue under someone else's stewardship — "it's not rocket science", he says, "but you have to deal with a lot of rubbish".
You can read Yle's English pages on Teksti-TV at page 190.

Beers with an ecological goal. Made with wild herbs, aged bread, berries, and fruits; and smoked malt made with goose droppings. Made in cooperation with Ant Brew in the Finnish city of Lahti.
Tumblr media
Press Release
The Finnish city of Lahti is known for their pioneering environmental action, and for their open-minded co-operation with local people. Now the European Green Capital 2021 joins forces with the local microbrewery Ant Brew by crafting a new beer series. The Wasted Potential beers are brewed with wild herbs, local food waste, like bread, berries and fruits – and even goose droppings.
The poop is used in a food-safe way to smoke malt to create a unique stout beer. The goose droppings are gathered from local parks, where geese are causing a messy problem. Now, the local parks get cleaner and the special edition summer beverages are perfect for a picnic in the park – a true two birds with one stone type of solution.
The beers showcase how all waste can be utilized. City of Lahti aims to be completely wasteless circular economy city by 2050, and at the moment 99% of the city’s household waste is already repurposed.
A taste of potential that was not wasted – A sustainable future demands effective use of resources and innovative ways of recycling. Lahti has several well-known breweries, so what would be a better way to celebrate our environment this summer than locally brewed beers, says Saara Piispanen, Head of Communications of Lahti European Green Capital.
The beer that uses goose droppings in the malt smoking process will be released later in the summer. First to be released is a wit-style beer inspired by waste-free circular economy: brewed with orange peels from a local market’s juice pressing station, and fruit purees that have exceeded their best before-date.
– This series of beers is our way to create important discussions about food waste, utilization of waste, urban farming, and local and wild food among beer enthusiasts. Working with the Lahti Green Capital has been great. We are constantly developing ways to utilize new ingredients in brewing, and are not afraid to think outside of the box, says Ant Brew’s Kari Puttonen.
– Our environment and circular economy are important for us, and we want to discuss these topics in interesting ways. Together we can create solutions that are eco-friendly and represent sustainable consumption, says Piispanen.
...
Lahti – The European Green Capital of 2021
Lahti is the first Finnish city to win the European Green Capital Award. A sustainable future calls for action, which is why Lahti will achieve carbon neutrality by 2025. Lahti sees its year as the European Green Capital as an opportunity to showcase the best of European green innovation, promote Finland’s climate targets, launch a range of ambitious partnership projects and make life better for local residents. Lahti is a City of Makers that tackles future challenges together. Lahti – Enduring change. https://greenlahti.fi/en/

An introduction to VR multiple units, part 6: Sm7
Today, we look into the future, far to the distant year 2025... no, wait, that's next year! Anyway, next year we will take delivery of our newest passenger rolling stock: the Sm7 electric multiple units. They will enter passenger services in 2026.
Tumblr media
An mock-up of an Sm7 unit at Helsinki central station in the new Green Steam livery. VR.
During the acquisition process of the Sm7, various possible requirement were disucssed in public, including double-decker rolling stock, and service speeds up to 200 km/h. However, the final choice was a single-decker train of Stadler Flirt design (the same platform as JKOY Sm5 units used in local services around the Helsinki region), with a service speed of 160 km/h.
Tumblr media
Projected Sm7 interiors. VR.
The contract for 20 four-carriage units was signed in 2022, with deliveries starting 2025. VR has an option for up to 50 additional units. The 20 trains ordered will be used on long-haul slow-stopping services from Helsinki to Tampere and Lahti (lines R, Z, D and T), as well as on the Tampere and Hanko local train services (lines M and H), replacing the Sm4's, which will in turn be cascaded to the lines linking Kotka, Kouvola, Lahti and Riihimäki (G and O), replacing the Sm2's. The additional trains suitable for local services will also make it possible to expand the local train services.
Tumblr media
Mock-up of the original projected Sm7 livery, before the competition that resulted in the Green Steam livery. VR.
However, it should also be noted that the projected interiors are much more akin to long-distance trains than current local train fleet, and the 160 km/h service speed would also make the Sm7 usable on Intercity services on some routes. Whether the trains will be used on these in addition to local services is an entirely different question, of course.

Degusteerimised? Kohvinurk?
Eeeeh. Kas on vaja?
Ei ole. Kodu on saavutanud täieliku oma rütmi. Tunnistan, et on päevi, kus tööd on vähe, aga samal ajal tunnistan, et on õhtuid, kus arvuti on kauem lahti. Stressi on kokkuvõttes vähem. Kontor ei ole hädavajalik, vajalik on hoopis usaldus ja koostöö.
Eks selline eemalolek annab muidugi teatava negatiivse efekti tiimi vibe’ile.
Keegi suurem, mingi pandeemiajumal, teeb neid minu eest.
Huvitav, mis tundega me aastale 2020 näiteks 2025. aastal tagasi vaatame?
