I can’t stop revisiting old neighborhood places when I’m in Philadelphia. I bought a lot of Vitaminwater at spruce street market. A day of eating: liangpi from xian sizzling woks for lunch and 1000 layer bread with beef kabob, spring ginger salad, tea leaf salad and southern Burmese rice noodles from Rangoon for dinner. #chinesefood #shaanxifood #liangpi #burmesefood #thousandlayerbread #naan #lahpetthoke #ginthoke #noodles #ricenoodles (at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/BygL81AFrGy/?igshid=1eh81u0pguuu8

Part 13 of 25 World Cuisines to try. (2/4) Today’s Cuisine: #Burma / #Myanmar Another dish I found competing for the unofficial title of ‘unofficial national dish’ of Burma was #LahpetThoke or #TeaLeafSalad. Despite how it may look in the picture, this was one of the most amazing salads I ever had the pleasure to eat. One bite was all I needed to see why this dish is so popular. The fermented #GreenTea leaves are known to be bitter and it’s soaked in oil as a preservative. Knowing this, other elements of the dish are added to the salad to make it taste light, fresh, and flavorful. My #salad included cabbage, lettuce, tomato, sesame seeds, toasted garlic, peanuts and a bit of lemon. There was a lot going into every bite – it was savory, salty, bitter, sweet, crunchy, chewy, and juicy. My only complaint was that there might have been a tad bit too much lettuce (which I only found out later in yelp reviews you can request to remove). Otherwise, this salad was very impressive and it made me want to eat more, despite an already large portion. #Lahpet is very important from a historical and cultural perspective. Lahpet was an ancient peace offering between warring kingdoms throughout Burma’s history. The salad back then had the ingredients separated so that each party could customize what they wanted in the salad while diplomatically settling their disputes. In more modern times, this salad is prepared for any celebration, holiday or ceremony. It’s also made to welcome guests in one’s home, and as a snack or palette cleanser after a meal. Because the base of the salad is green tea leaf, it’s considered a stimulant and is popularly eaten by students when cramming for exams as well a snack to ward off sleep during a Burmese #Pwe (a rich, sometimes days long performance incorporating song, dance, theatre and comedy to tell stories of Burma’s culture and Buddhist teachings). #CafeMingala #UES #UpperEastSide #foodie #Thoke

#lahpetthoke #burmese #greentea leaf #salad first try. It wasn't that crisp but the lemon sour fresh salad felt great with ice cold water as #dinner will try to make it again. #foodlove #foodblogger
