Volcano Week
Be Geohazard Aware! Eruptions on volcanoes like Mount Rainier are complicated by the glaciers covering them. During an eruption, glacial ice can melt and mix with rock, ash, and other volcanic materials to form powerful flows of mud and debris. Lahars (volcanic mudflows), post-lahar sedimentation, and flooding can have greater effects on downstream populations than the eruptions themselves, and these hazards can persist for years after the eruption is over. These geohazards can occur during eruptions, after large landslides, even without an active volcanic eruption.
Smaller seasonal debris flows can also be caused by sudden outbursts of glacial water, by intense precipitation, or embankment failure. While detection and warning models are improving, it is important to always be aware of your surroundings. Remember, if you notice a sudden change in water levels, feel the ground rumble, or hear a loud roaring sound, move to higher ground immediately! If you see signs of a debris flow or other geohazard activity, please report it to a ranger.
Mount Rainier is an active volcano with the potential for future eruptions, but eruptions do not happen without warning. The USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO) carefully monitors Mount Rainier and other Cascade Range volcanoes. Follow the link for Current Alerts for U.S. Volcanos and click the "CVO" tab for Cascade Range volcano updates.

Mount Rainier Lahars: Hazards for Puyallup and Nisqually
Large lahars (volcanic mudflows) pose substantial threats to people and property downstream from Mount Rainier, Washington. Lahars can occur during an eruption, as happened at Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980. Lahars can also begin as large landslides that occur without warning, traveling down river channels to densely populated areas downstream.
The report does not predict when the next large lahar will occur. It provides examples of how lahars of differing sizes and mobilities could behave. The simulations rely on decades of research on the geology of Mount Rainier, the physics of landslide initiation and lahar dynamics, and computational methods for computer simulations.
Open-file Report 2021-1118, "Modeling the Dynamics of Lahars that Originate as Landslides on the West Side of Mount Rainier, Washington", is authored by USGS scientists David George, Richard Iverson, and Charles Cannon of the USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory and USGS Oregon Water Science Center.

Okay so I'm not in the hurricane evacuation zone by any means but I do live in a horrendously natural disaster-prone region SO!! Here are the best tips I've gotten for surviving in a disaster zone.
1) Write your name and your emergency contact's phone number in DARK PERMANENT INK somewhere visible on your skin (wrist is good) so if you're unconscious or dead emergency response can ID you and get in contact with your family/friends
2) If you have any particular medical needs or conditions write that too!! Specific medications + doses, warning signs and symptoms to watch for, etc
3) During the disaster, if your circumstances change or may change soon, record a new voicemail message explaining these changes so anyone who calls you knows your most recent status and location. Whatever details you think might help!
4) Stock up on Rx meds before pharmacies close. Get some OTC meds too and make a watertight and portable first aid kit. If you're gonna be in flood conditions and your Rx bottles aren't fully sealed, wrap the lids with duct tape to make a tight seal. If you've got tampons and pads in the house, stuff those babies in there! Good for everything from periods, to bloody noses and open wounds in an emergency! Plus they're super absorbent and can be used to temporarily block up small spaces and cracks
5) If there's no bottled water left in stores buy the biggest and cheapest bottles of soda you can, dump them out, and fill them with fresh water. If you have sinks and bathtubs that aren't expected to flood, fill those bad boys up with fresh water, too. Store as much water as you can!!
6) Put all important documents such as Social Security cards, birth certificates, marriage certificates, or anything else you want to save into waterproof bags. Ziplock baggies double sealed with duct tape along the closed seams are great! Double bag if needed!
7) Special cool new thing I learned about hurricanes that I'm probably the last dumbass on earth to know but just in case I'm not: even if a hurricane makes landfall as a Cat 3, if it was a Cat 5 over the ocean on approach it will bring in Cat 5 surge. Downgrading the wind speed doesn't downgrade the flood potential
8) TAKE THE BACKROADS OUT OF MAJOR CITIES OH MY GOD PLS DONT GET STUCK ON THE FREEWAYS IT'S HELL
9) Last but not least, if you can't afford to evacuate or don't have a place to stay, some people under videos and posts tagged with current natural disasters are offering temporary places to crash for those in affected areas for free!! I've seen multiple cases now of people offering up their guest rooms or couches to evacuees and their pets in the last week that have worked out ❤️
If anyone else has more tips, and more experience with this type of disaster specifically, please add on!! Love you all and hope everyone stays safe 💕

My best friend and I moved in together with his closest friend from his MA program, and while I had met her before (the friend; my bff is a man), we hadn't spent much time together because I've never lived away from the West Coast (and only two years out of the PNW) and she's never lived outside of North Carolina and only briefly visited the PNW once, when she went to Portland last year.
It's been a delight to show her around the PNW and realize we need to explain things that are just sort of omnipresent in our lives. The bff and I were casually griping with each other about having to run an errand to Trader Joe's at an inconvenient hour, and were telling her, "it's okay, you can stay in the car and avoid the people if you want" and she was like "NO I MUST SEE IT, I'VE ONLY HEARD OF THEM" and nearly ascended to another plane when we showed her around the store.
The bff and I grew up in the same town in NW Washington (him for his first 18 years, me from 9 to 19) and he lived in Bellingham and Seattle for years before he went to NC for grad school (I went to the SF Bay Area for mine, a very different experience). Both of them are hardcore coffee aficionados, but he struggled with the different Coffee Ways of the South, so for the true PNW experience they want to tour various indie coffeeshops next.
Also, she adores Kaidan in Mass Effect and we were like, oh, is your passport up to date? We could take a trip sometime and show you your boyfriend's beloved English Bay. It's very beautiful :)
her: O_O
me: Actually, it's worth going to Vancouver BC for its own sake as well, it's truly spectacular. We used to go all the time as kids.
bff: And Victoria!
her: O_O
#as much as i very openly love my homeland (read: the pnw. sometimes the whole west coast) at all times#it is truly special to experience it through someone who's never lived anywhere remotely near here. she's never seen vegas or seattle or la#we were super hungry after moving stuff yesterday and the bff was like 'i'm not sure i have a real restaurant in me...#let's just pick up some stuff from jack in the box'#her: 'what's a jack in the box?'#even the department store chains we're used to are different#also she's queer and was concerned about having queer friendly dating options out here and we're like '...oh sweetie'#and since she's from eastern nc we were also explaining that the pacific ocean up here is not like the atlantic#her: 'what are your hurricanes like?' us: '... we um. don't really have them'#then we were like... i mean rainier's lahars are going to melt seattle someday but these are infrequent events#and there will be seismic warnings. even mt st helens gave some warning!#i think the only disappointment for her so far was our building codes (she's very into proper infrastructure)#the roads are nice but our buildings are not designed for combating nature by her standards#it's interesting because we're so unused to the idea of nature as generally something to combat#in fairness someone from say astoria might think about that differently or in very rural areas. but in the parts we're familiar with#usually 'natural' dangers are 'poorly timed human fuckery' and things like rain generally come as friends#like yeah don't go antagonizing a bear or cougar or moose or whatnot but you'd really have to go out of your way#anghraine babbles#cascadia blogging#the adventures of space redacted#anghraine's gaming#us american blogging#i should probably have a bff tag#long post

all of the council members that died in the tartaros attack were buried in unmarked graves by default
Tumblr media

I absolutely loved the update. Dante is adorable and my jealous ass is kinda obsessed with him.
I loved all the small little details in the demo like the side comments, how good it looks, the humor, the fact when you sign your documents todays date is actually there. I don't trust Vie for shiiiiiit!!! On my list along with Juno!!!
But i do like the writing and it was a pleasant read so thank you so much. Was so bummed at the end.
On that does the demo end before the festival?
I shall attach a screenshot for reference! ❤️
Tumblr media
I can't lie, writing Dante out just makes my day, I'm glad he doesn't seem one dimensional!! That's my worst fear when it comes to writing aahhh
I'm also glad the comments are noticed hehehe (˵ ¬ᴗ¬˵)
THE TODAY'S DAT THING MADE ME SO GIDDY TOO ISTG I FELT LIKE EINSTEIN
I was like "lets add today's date, this'll blow people's socks off for sureeeeee ✍🏼"
As for where the scene ends, I've fixed it up! I seem to have forgotten to add it's respective link. But you will be able to carry on now.

Mest pisses me off because he just can't be a creep AND USELESS
But he's nott
His powers are COOL and the teleporting and mind messing is Useful!!
But he's nasty waste of cool useful powers
Nothing makes me angrier than the fact that Mest had the coolest powers and biggest potential to the most captivating, saddening backstory. Even his quirk could be explained — he has this need to taste everything bc he messed with his memories so much he forgot basic knowledge that he learned as a child: he never grew out of the oral fixation part. Or maybe he did, but anyhow his powers come at a cost, and Makarov made him use them constantly without knowing the side effects. They’re irreversible.
And then there’s the angst that comes with not knowing if his life is real. Memories are fragile, they get harmed every time he messes with them. He has no sense of who he is, really. And he can’t use other people’s memories to help him bc he messed with their memories too, regarding his identity.
And he also struggles with understanding his feelings for Lahar — is it love or is he confused? Does Lahar actually like the real Mest? Or is it Doranbolt he actually loves, not Mest? Where does one draw the line between two true lives? He’s constantly worried about this.
His life is ruined by his power, yet it’s too powerful for to not use: it would be immoral to avoid using such skill, when it would save so many lives.
But noooo Mashima just had to make him a pedo. So now I can’t appreciate what Mest could have been.

Wordplay Wednesday: Conglomerate
What is a conglomerate? It is a type of sedimentary rock that is characterized by it's rounded gravel, pebble, or cobble-sized grains cemented together by silica, calcite, or iron oxide.
Tumblr media
There are many ways in which a conglomerate can be formed. Turbidites are deep marine conglomerates created by turbidity currents.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many are fluvial in nature and occur in rivers with a high flow rate (immature river systems) such as the Buckhorn Conglomerate of the Cedar Mountain Formation in Utah, USA.
Tumblr media
Alluvial fans along mountain fronts tend to make the thickest conglomerates. These are often called fanglomerates.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Debris flows also deposit conglomerates such as the Clarno Formation in John Day National Monument which was deposited by a lahar or volcanic mudslide.
Tumblr media
Glaciers create tillites, a very poorly sorted type of conglomerate (no discernable pattern to size or shape of grains).
