(Not your knees!) - A large number of swimmers kick only from their knees, which creates a lot of drag and is wildly inefficient. When we kick from our knees we leave out the white-hot engine that is our core! Think of your midsection as the power plant to your kick. This post was put together by a world class and very respected Triathlete @altabrio Gaining a feel for the elusive high-elbow catch-to-pull can take years of practice. The reality is, the high-elbow catch is UNNATURAL. We don't mimic that position anywhere in our normal routine. However, there are some quick and easy ways to simulate this feeling on dry land that we include in our clinics and in the AltaBrio program. Here is my favorite one: THE DECK PRESS DRILL During your normal intervals, take 5 or so seconds to: 1. Place your hands palm down on the pool edge. 2. Press down on the pool deck with your palms. Never let the pressure go. 3. One arm at a time, rotate your shoulder inward toward your chin. 4. At the same time, bend your elbow and feel it point toward the sky. This will be a strange feeling. 5. Rotate your body and repeat on the other arm. The key is to feel your hand pressing down on the pool deck while your elbow is bent and pointed upward. This awkward rotation starts from the shoulder. This is best done during your next round of 50s or 100s. That way you can continually apply what you are feeling.
