Lafayette x Swem Library promotion! Lafayette's honorary degree from William & Mary (granted upon his visiting tour in 1824) is being housed at William & Mary's Swem library for the first time in over 200 years to celebrate the bicentennial of Lafayette's 2024-2025 tour of the US! Thank you Mark Schneider for making this video, I got more likes on my repost than the actual video on the student social media 💔
Voila!
Bonus! They are celebrating in Yorktown, too!
@rosemeriwether @hiidkwhatimdoing7525 Lafayette's honorary degree is being housed in Seem library if you have time to see! :)

“Welcome, thrice welcome, to our shores; and withersoever throughout the limits of the continent your course shall take you, the ear that hears you shall bless you, the eye that sees you shall bear witness to you, and every tongue exclaim, with heartfelt joy, welcome, welcome Lafayette." —NY Evening Post, Sept. 15, 1824
OTD(Sept. 15) in 1824 General Lafayette was forced to spend time in Haverstraw Bay due to the grounding of the steamboat “James Kent” on the Oyster Bank. This unfortunate turn of events marked the beginning of the North (Hudson) River segment of Lafayette’s Tour and had a significant impact on the rest of Lafayette’s day on September 15, 1824. Indeed, originally scheduled to be welcomed at the United States Military Academy at West Point around 10 AM, Lafayette would only arrive there early in the afternoon because of the delay accumulated near Haverstraw.
We are pleased to announce the upcoming unveiling of a new Lafayette Trail marker to be installed in Haverstraw on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at 10 am.
The marker commemorates the bicentennial of the Marquis de Lafayette’s stop in the Haverstraw Bay on September 15, 1824 — exactly 200 years ago to the day (and nearly to the hour!)
Join The Lafayette Trail, Inc., the Village of Haverstraw, the Haverstraw Brick Museum, the Historical Society of Rockland County, and the William G. Pomeroy Foundation as we (quite literally) mark the historical kickoff of this important segment of the tour!
The event is FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. It will take place at Emeline Park (30 Liberty St, Haverstraw, NY 10927). Street parking will be available along the park. The ceremony is expected to last approximately 45 minutes and will include remarks from all stakeholders involved in the preparation of the monument, the marker unveiling, and photo opportunities.

It was fun seeing Claire meet the Marquis de Lafayette especially as the US is currently celebrating the 200th anniversary of his return to America where a couple people who portray the Marquis are going to the different towns and cities that were visited. https://lafayette200.org

However, it was in the presence of the whole people, and amid the most vivid demonstrations of public feeling, that he [La Fayette] embarked at noon on the thirteenth of July, 1824. The weather being fine, and the sea perfectly calm, we embarked with facility; all the crew, paraded upon deck, waited for the arrival of the general, with an expression of joy mingled with noble pride. As he passed beneath the American flag, to whose glory and independence he had so freely contributed, he was greeted with three cheers, which were re-echoed by all the crews in port, and by the crowds which thronged the shore. Some particular friends who accompanied the general on board the Cadmus, received his final adieus. Almost immediately afterwards, our sails were filled by a fresh breeze, which wafted us along until we lost sight of that loved land, in which, in spite of all that may be said or done, virtue and patriotism will always find courageous defenders.

Accompanied only by his son and the writer of this narrative he [La Fayette] left Paris on the 11th and arrived at Havre on the 12th of July where the Cadmus, an American merchant ship, had waited for him some weeks. The patriotism of the citizens of Havre had prepared for him a reception well calculated to gratify his feelings, but the absurd jealousy of the police checked this expression of the public sentiment, and would have produced a scene of disorder and bloodshed, if the inhabitants had been less discreet. Police officers, gendarmes, and Swiss soldiers, rivalled each other in their zeal to repress the noble ardor of the citizens, during the short time that general Lafayette remained among them.

days until the bicentennial anniversary of Lafayette’s farewell tour begins!
fun fact: lafayette recognized former spy James Armistead Lafayette and ran to hug him. If you don’t know about James go learn about him RIGHT NOW he is amazing!!!
also shit I should have started this sooner because I have far too many facts and so few days so:
Lafayette also recognized a cannon they once used in the Revolution because it had a dent on it
It’s in the Yorktown battleground visiter center
He had a city named after him
he and 81 year old Jefferson drank a shit ton of wine at Monticello. Apparently they had to restock after he left

So to be clear...Lafayette did *not* drop sick beats about how he is takin' this horse by the reins makin’ Redcoats redder with bloodstains? And was he really America's favourite fighting Frenchman?
Dear @inthishousewestanspiderpunk,
well, “dropping sick beats” is a very modern way of putting it, so no – La Fayette did not drop sick beats. However, he could be quite sarcastic, witty and funny both in situations as well as in his letters.
As to the “America’s favourite fighting Frenchman” part – you could actually say he was. Nobody would have put it this way in his lifetime and La Fayette was by far not the only fighting Frenchman. There were many Frenchmen who came to America to fight, some came by themselves, some travelled with La Fayette and the bulk arrived with the French troops. French aid and French soldiers played a very vital role in the War of Independence. A number of these soldiers decided to stay in America and many of the, mostly higher-ranking soldiers and officers, befriended and were in contact with the same people that La Fayette was friends with. Still, La Fayette had a very special place in the hearts of America. 2024/25 marks the Bicentennial of La Fayette’s American Tour in 1824/25 and this tour was more or less a 16 month long standing ovation from America – you had hundreds of thousands of people participating one way or another, you had merchandise and souvenirs, you had very generous gifts, you had towns, cities, counties and military units renaming themselves in honour of La Fayette – it was called his Triumphant Tour for a reason. There was really no other person, at least no other Frenchmen, who received even a similar treatment at any point in the history of the United States.
Therefor in short, I think the term “America’s favourite fighting Frenchmen”, albeit modern, is accurate.
I hope you have/had a lovely day!

*exhale* there’s no turning back now
LAFAYETTE’S FAREWELL TOUR HAD STARTED!!!
I’ve decided to make this board thing for every day of the tour!
the map is hand drawn (I regret doing it) so there will be (there is) a lot of imperfections. I’ll make more of the little black sticky thingy (idk what to call them) as it goes. Lafayette will move according to the places he’s at 200 years ago each day
August 15th, 1824
Lafayette arrived at Arrives at Staten Island, New York. the ship Cadmus landed at Sandy hook, New Jersey a day ago. He was accompanied by his son Georges Washington de Lafayette and some other people. He spent about a month on the ship.
