November 4- 14 (!), 1824
Lafayette was at Monticello and Charlottesville va!
Tumblr media
Lafayette arrived at Boyd tavern before going to Monticello on the 4th.
on the 5th he was at the University of Virginia where a banquet was held
when Lafayette saw Jefferson again they were hugging and crying and all that. Lafayette stayed for 12 days, Madison also came to hang out. They talked about the past, Lafayette told him (once again) to free his slaves, and drank a shit ton of wine (Jefferson was 81 wtf)

Lafayette was in Hampton Falls, Hampton, Greenland, Portsmouth (now New Hampshire)
it’s Septemberrrrr!!!

during his visit to Greenland, a street was named after him, in Portsmouth, he visited the Franklin Hall. He also reunited with a Revolutionary war veteran who had fought with and help carried Lafayette back because of leg wound in the battle of brandywine!
He also visited the Langdon house, the Portsmouth navy shipyard, and dined in Jefferson hall, they held the biggest banquet in Portsmouth history.
After a visit to the Warner house, he left Portsmouth.

September 9-14, 1824
Lafayette was in Manhattan
he was in Manhattan the whole time why not just do it in one post?
Tumblr media
the evening of September 8th he went to park theater. They had a reenactment of the battle of Yorktown there for him. In fact, Lafayette visited this place 4 times during his tour!
September 9th, he visited St. Paul’s chapel and city hall park
September 10th, he visited Free School number 3 and African Free School During his tour, he will be at schools a lot. Just saying, if Lafayette was watching me write an essay. HOW CAN I CONCENTRATE ON THE EASSAY???! adopt me Lafayette. He also visited the home of Nicholas Fish, another Amrev veteran.
September 11th, Lafayette attended a performance at the Chatham Garden Theatre.
September 12th, he visited trinity church, he accompanied Eliza Hamilton to visit Hamilton and Philip’s graves.
September 14th, they had a WHOLE DAMN FESTIVAL for him in castle garden. About 5000 people attended. They also made it look like his house in France a lot (la grange) which a onlooker recalled “[Lafayette] exclaimed, ‘Oh, ma maison! La Grange! La Grange!’
(Oh! My house! La Grange! La Grange!)
which WHY WAS IT SO ADORABLE??? He sound like an excited child ahhhhhh 🥹

October 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21, 1824
Lafayette was at Mount Vernon (17th) Yorktown (celebration the surrender) (18th and 19th) and Williamsburg (20 and 21)
very important part of his tour
Tumblr media
im fitting this all in one post because I will be at Yorktown the whole weekend (SO EXCITED!!!) and I doubt I will have time then to post
Lafayette visited Mount Vernon, Washington’s tomb. Not the first time he’s been in Mount Vernon but certainly one of the most memorable one.
“General Lafayette descended alone at first into the burial vault, and some minutes later reappeared on the threshold, his face inundated with tears; he took his son and me by the hand, made us enter with him, and with the motion of his hand pointed out to us the coffin of his fatherly friend; . . . We bowed down together in front of the coffin near to which we respectfully brought our lips; in getting up, we threw ourselves into the arms of General Lafayette, and we mixed our tears with his sorrows.”
his secretary Auguste Levasseur wrote (btw shout out to this guy because we get to know so much of the tour from him!)
this makes me want to cry every time
Lafayette was welcomed back to Yorktown with the song Yankee Doodle (if you know you know) and gave a speech, he was reunited with James Armistead Lafayette when he spotted him in the crowd. George Washington parke Custis (Washington step grandson) brought the tent Washington used as a head quarter over
He visited redoubt 10, where he and some other lead the attack, was given a civic crown then he gave this crown to Nicholas Fish who is the last living person that attacked this redoubt with him (cOuGh CoUGH Hamilton Laurens)
He visited the surrender field and had a banquet in a tent. Washington’s headquarter ten was brought for the occasion and they dined under the light of Cornwallis’ candles that they found in a box from 1781.
before his departure he had breakfast in Washington headquarters tent where he had dined so many times in before
He was welcomed into Williamsburg and had a banquet in Raleigh tavern, visited the basset hall and visited the collage of willam and Mary, where some founding fathers like Jefferson went to school. Lafayette also have a honorary degree here at W&M for law I believe
There definitely will be more about this coming soon especially after the weekend
