It's their mother's birthday and unseasonably sunny, so Saedii invites Kal to pause work for the afternoon and have a late lunch with her. She packs a picnic (mostly cheese sandwiches and orange slices, her latest of odd cravings) and they climb a hill to eat under a tree.

"Not your usual haunt," Kal says, a little breathless as they near the summit.

"It reminds me of afternoons with mother, when our family was whole," she says, her only explanation as she gets to the top. Kal notes that she too is a breathing a little heavier than she normally would, but chocks it up to her choice of hill.

"I don't remember those days," he says and Saedii frowns.

"You were little, probably too little to remember. Mother thought you were too young to play with me and father," Kal frowns.

"Father? Playing?" he questions and Saedii shrugs.

"Yes. Anyway, let's not ruin mother's birthday with the memory of father," she lowers herself to sit against the trunk of the tree, knees up to her chest, and Kal sits beside her, their shoulders pressing together.

For a long moment, they sit in silence, the wind rustling through their braids as they looked over the village below them.

"I've been thinking a lot about her lately," Saedii finally admits and Kal turns his head to watch her but her eyes continue to track the Syldrathi moving below them. "Wondering if she would be proud of me, if I'm anything like her," Saedii breathes a laugh a little at that. "I doubt it though," Kal frowns and shakes his head once.

"You are. You fight for what you believe in and you care for the people you love. That's quintessential mother. She'd be proud," he assures her, voice quiet but firm as he watches her face.

What he didn't expect was to see tears form in Saedii's eyes and begin to track down her cheeks.

"Saedii?" he questions. Saedii lets out a watery laugh and buries her head in her knees. "Hey, it's okay," he wraps his arms around her shoulders.

"No, it's not... thank you for the words, but I'm not crying over them," she reassures him, sitting back up and wiping away the tears. "Stupid freaking-" she pauses and Kal waits and she composes herself.

"I have thought about mother a lot lately because I don't know what to do and I figure she's the only role model I've got right now," Kal's brow furrows. "And it doesn't help that Terrans have the worst pregnancy symptoms in the galaxy. I mean, I just finished all the vomiting and now I cry at the drop of the hat. Embarassing," she snorts but Kal keeps staring at her.

"You're pregnant?" he asks, a smile begin to crack his lips. Saedii nods, "with Tyler?" she hits his shoulder at that.

"Yes, dipshit," she scoffs, then pauses and smiles wistfully, "a baby girl," Kal grins and wraps her in a hug.

"That's wonderful Saedii, congratulations to you and Tyler. I have no doubt your daughter will be beautiful," he says and feels her head drop onto his shoulder. "And that you will excel at raising her."

"Thank you Kaliis," she says into his shoulder, unable to fight her smile.

Saturday dinner had somehow become a staple in the squad. Today it was at the Jones-De Seel's. Their ship was cluttered with haphazardly strewn toys and the children seemed to be having a fun time if the laughing coming from the den was any indication.

Saedii sat at the end of the table, eating her food and talking and laughing at Fin's impersonation of his so called "work enemy". All in all, perfectly normal, but she could feel Auri's eyes on her and Tyler.

She thinks Auri might have been tipped off when Kal offered her wine and she declined, but she also knows Kal wouldn't think anything of it and that Auri could keep her mouth shut enough to not announce her findings to the whole table.

When all their children are sleepy and Scarlett and Fin begin the bedtime routine for their five, Tyler picks up Lae, kisses his sister goodbye and the rest of them leave on a shared pod.

As they were dropping Kal and Auri off, Saedii pulled her brother aside in their docking bay while Tyler and Auri went further into the ship.

Saedii cast a glance into the pod to see Lae still in her seat, mouth hanging open as she slept, too cute to disturb. She smiled at her daughter and turned back to her brother.

"Tyler and I wanted to tell you first and I think your wife caught on so tonight is a good a time as any," she shrugs and Kal frowned.

"Did something happen?" he asked and Saedii snorted, smirking.

"Oh many things happened," she says. "Do you remember years ago you told me Tyler and I would excel at parenting?" She asks and Kal nods in silence. "How do you think we'll do with two?" Kal grins and wraps her in a hug so tight, swinging her in his excitement.

"You're pregnant again?" he questions. Saedii chuckles.

"I'm pregnant again," she confirms and his arms tighten around her even further, his grin almost bright enough to light up the shadowy docking bay.

ok so like, I don’t think it would be entirely unheard of. Like the bank teller in emerald city seems to kinda take it as face value (but also like…. She was dragging around a space elf on a leash so…)

I absolutely think all aurora legionaries get some kind of funny future birth control, probably with the mountain of other medical stuff you have to get when you intend to go to like, humanitarian disaster sites.

also: if the genetic code of two beings is similar enough to make a kid (Lae) then presumably both of them could get the same illnesses? I know Tyler is only half human but like, everything else about him seems normal (hell his blood is still red) so presumably he can still get like, the flu?.

actually how the fuck can are either of the joneses capable of having kids? Like normally if you cross two species you get infertile offspring. What kind of ungodly mess of human genetics and Syldrathi DNA are those two? Like on one hand yeah Caersan was raging about his children feelin the Pull for Terrans and the Jones twins were never told their mother was Syldrathi, but then Kal told Auri his mom would’ve liked her and Finian’s family met Scarlett and liked her so it doesn’t seem like something that’d be widely frowned upon. Or is it truly odd/not common and nearly everyone else looks at them like wow what a bunch of freaky alien-fucking weirdos???

But like if it isn’t unconventional, then where are all the folk like the Jones twins???

Had there never been mixed species children prior so everyone just assumed it wasn’t possible and was like cool we can raw dog aliens and not have to worry bout pregnancy? Like it’s gotta be rare right? Cause like Kal and Auri had been gettin it on for a minute. Scarlett was ready to climb Fin like a tree during the time loop. Tyler, even after discovering he was half-Syldrathi, was still tryna get down and dirty with Saedii on that ship.

Like does the Legion give everyone mandatory birth control for the duration of their training and field service or something so everyone’s like protection be damned? Cause I imagine squad stability getting shaken up due to maternity/parental leave would be rough, and teen pregnancies at a military academy wouldn’t fly anyway. But the academy should still be teaching safe sex practices to the teens, man.

It’s all fun and games til an STD jumps across species. Smh my head.

Tyler and Saedii's relationship starts with Saedii who wants to kill Tyler through a Drakkon and ends 27 years later with Tyler dying while saving their daughter from getting killed by a Drakkon.

Amie and Jay probably had lots of fun.

Hi @lilxmoo and @gergthecat. I really do appreciate your thoughts on this and I appreciate how diplomatic and kind you’ve been despite disagreeing with me. @lilxmoo is correct. All of the characters have sins and mistakes they’ve made. It does make them human. If I spent the time, I could write posts about each character depicting their flaws, but I don’t want to do that because these are characters we’ve grown to love. I have come to realize that I have maybe exaggerated and let my own biases get in the way of my writing. And I neglected to point out the positive qualities Tyler Jones has.

@lilxmoo in particular you’ve made good points about Tyler’s relationship with Lae. He does sacrifice himself for her and she does love him. I think that one scene rubbed me the wrong way and got me lit up.

I do feel bad for causing a rift between this wonderful fandom.

The Character of Tyler Jones from an academic perspective as someone who has studied human behavior.

Hello everyone, several months ago I made a statement saying that “Tyler Jones is a terrible person”. I know that I offended many people saying that and I am sorry for hurting those who felt offended. I have been weighed down with demanding classes and caring for a family member of mine with a mental health disease. I planned on backing up my claims much sooner with a list of all the reasons Tyler Jones is “bad”. However I regret phrasing it using the word terrible, because whether or not someone is ‘good’ or ‘terrible’ remains solely up to you, the reader. That being said, in this singular post I plan on showing how Tyler Jones shows selfish motivations and borderline egoistic tendencies based on canon events in the Aurora Cycle series. 

DISCLAIMER: I do not mean to hurt anyone, personally. If you love Tyler, this is not an attack on you. It is okay if you disagree with me, but those who send me vulgar or unkind comments will be blocked.  Thank you.

That being said, let’s jump in.

Selfish motivations: In Book 1, page 39, Tyler Jones quotes to Scarlett and Cat: “The Legion stands for something real. There’s people out there who need our help, and we’re not helping any of them by sitting here and feeling sorry for ourselves.” This leads us to believe that Tyler Jones cares about saving other people. And, in Book 1 page 84 he says to Kal: “Is that the kind of person I seem to you? The kind that decides to hate an entire species because one of them killed his old man?” Also leading us to believe that Tyler is a benevolent person. But as we get on in the books, we learn that these are performative traits. In Book 1, page 11, we see that Tyler Jones wants to leave Auri in the cryopod to die. Despite seeing the vital signs that she is in fact alive. It is only after his sense of duty kicks in which makes him rescue her. (I will say, his sense of duty can be a good trait.)

Objectifies women: Book 2, page 328, Tyler Jones is being held by the Unbroken. In this chapter, Tyler sees Saedii clad in her undergarments. And in this we read Tyler’s thoughts: I realize that once again she is trying to get a reaction from me. She knows how beautiful she is. She knows that beauty throws people off if they let it. While this could be mistaken as desire, it is objectification. Sexual desire refers to a natural, innate, and personal attraction to and appreciation of a partner's entire self - body, mind, and spirit. It is an interpersonal connection based on genuine mutual feelings of love, trust, and attraction.

In contrast, sexual objectification involves treating a person solely as an object or means to fulfill sexual desires rather than a whole individual deserving of dignity and respect. It reduces a person to a body part or a sexual stereotype rather than seeing them as fully human. This is a violation of autonomy and an abuse of power when not freely consented to by all involved. It is never acceptable for anyone, including intimate partners, to pressure, coerce or manipulate others into sexual situations.

Sexual objectification is deeply damaging and dehumanizing, while healthy sexual desire celebrates and honors one's partner's whole being. The key distinction is freely given mutual consent and the absence of power imbalances versus the reduction of a person to a mere object of sexual pleasure.

It is apparent from this chapter alone that Tyler Jones views Saedii as only an object to please him. He is under the impression that her beauty is all to be shown off for him. Instead of looking away, he chose to ogle and objectify her. 

In book 3, page 38, Tyler fantasizes about Saedii and says: “I can still feel her body pressed against mine if I try. We both knew my line about bed was halfway true…” The implication of him saying ‘we both knew’ is implying that Tyler thinks Saedii wants him just as much as he wants her. Note: Simply fantasizing about another character and thinking they share romantic interest doesn't inherently make someone a narcissist. However, it’s the way his pride leads him to assume that Saedii wants to jump into bed with him at any moment that leads to sexual objectification. Tyler's perspective on Saedii is profoundly objectifying. His egotistical assumption that she wants the same, without caring what she wants, shows he does not treat her as an equal, but rather an extension of himself to fulfill his own desires. This unhealthy mentality is textbook sexual objectification.

(Also yes, I do know that Saedii and Tyler do ‘fall in love’ in the series, but their relationship has proven to be very back-and-forth, as opposed to Kal and Aurora’s constant and steady progression. Saedii and Tyler can’t seem to decide if they hate one another or love one another.)

Overly Controlling to his daughter: In the future chapters of Aurora’s End, Tyler has a daughter named Lae. We see in these chapters just how he chooses to treat her and talk to her. In book 3 chapter 14, the situation is not ideal and one could argue Tyler is  under a lot of stress, which he is. When Lae speaks up to share her perspective: (“We cannot aid the Starslayer, nor his son, nor the fool who binds herself to him. We must kill him to avenge our loss-”) Lae is ultimately cut off by Tyler. The exchange goes: “That’s enough, Lae.” Tyler says. “No!” She shouts. “Commander, the blood of billions is on his hands. Honor demands his death! We cannot possibly-” “I said that’s ENOUGH lieutenant!” Tyler roars. (Book 3, page 175.)

The fact that Tyler doesn’t hear her out and listen to her is bad enough, but what this exchange tells me is that Tyler doesn’t value Lae’s input as valuable. Their relationship is extremely strained, from Lae only referring to him as commander while Tyler refers to her as lieutenant. There seems to be no love between the two. I have studied family crisis cases in psychology classes. And this is a clear case of father not respecting daughter, and daughter harboring intense resentment and reluctant submission. Tyler has this ultimate need to be in control at all times and it is hurting his relationship with his daughter. 

Appropriates and uses Syldrathi culture to his advantage despite knowing very little about the Syldrathi: After Tyler learns of his half-Syldrathi heritage, he is quick to use it as a way to sway others into doing this his way. This is a form of cultural appropriation. Cultural appropriation is the unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption without understanding the historical and cultural context. As Tyler has stated many times in the series, he knows little about Syldrathi culture and knows a few words in the Syldrathi language. In book 3, page 38, Tyler says: “I’m half-Syldrathi myself. And I know more about the true enemy than anyone.” Say what you will, but that is pretty ballsy to say in front of a group of Unbroken Syldrathi who have quite literally worked with the Starslayer. Saedii even being the daughter of the Starslayer. In theory, would not she know the tactics her own father would use? Tyler is using his newly found Syldrathi heritage as a way to get them to go with his idea, despite knowing little about the Syldrathi. I wonder, if Tyler had never learned about his half-Syldrathi heritage, what would he have resorted to get the others to listen to him? And why does he think he knows the ‘true enemy’ (the Starslayer) better than all of these Syldrathi warriors? Another note: The way the Syldrathi make prejudiced remarks to Tyler about being a “half breed” is not acceptable either. But this does not excuse Tyler from his actions. 

Conclusion: This took me a long time to write in a way that was informative and filled with facts based off of canon events. Throughout the story, despite showing some good traits, Tyler cannot seem to let his poor traits get the better of him. Despite thinking of himself as the “golden boy” that he refers to himself as in Book 1.

I hope that this does not offend you personally if you like this character. I just needed to share my academic insight on this character.

I feel like he would be... nervous. I think he'd initially be too scared of being a bad father (especially if he had a son), but seeing Saedii have Lae and thrive as a mother would assure him. I said somewhere that Kal plays his siif for his children, and I think he'd be a very caring and gentle parent, and maybe a little permissive at times in fear of being too mean like his father was.

Now that I'm writing this, I've gotten a fic idea, so...
