Listening to the AFfC and ADwD audiobooks and it just hit me in the face with my unconscious biases.
Asoiaf ramblings under the cut...
The Jaime AFfC chapters just reinforced my dislike of the character - I saw no redemption, just a Lannister helping the loathsome Freys and his own house/family strengthen their stranglehold on the Riverlands. From doing nothing about poor Jeyne Poole being send North to marry Ramsay Bolton to threatening Stark allies in the Riverlands, Jaime is only concerned about the Lannisters coming out on top.
Jaime keeps making excuses for his support of the Freys being in direct opposition to his oaths to Catelyn by using the literal meaning of not fighting with a sword. All the while threatening to trebuchet Edmure's baby, taking Catelyn's family as hostages and even adding more guards when they are being transported so that there is no chance of escape or anyone freeing them. It's especially galling because for me the Freys are such loathsome cockroaches while poor Edmure has all my sympathy.
Which is why I am 100% for Ladystoneheart wrecking havoc in the Riverlands. Everytime there is a mention of the wolves or a band of outlaws taking down Lannister allies in the Jaime POV chapters it makes me so excited for the Freys/Lannisters getting utter wrecked!
If LSH wants to hang Jaime Lannister for crimes committed, I am here for it! I can understand where Brienne is coming from considering he saved her from unimaginable horror and yet the man deserves to hang.
And then I was listening to ADwD, and there's Jon's chapter of letting the Wildlings through the Wall after negotiation with Tormund and it struck me that as far as the Freefolk are concerned, Jon Snow is really not a nice guy is he?
The hostages went first—one hundred boys between the ages of eight and sixteen. “Your blood price, Lord Crow,” Tormund declared. “I hope the wailing o’ their poor mothers don’t haunt your dreams at night.” Some of the boys were led to the gate by a mother or a father, others by older siblings. More came alone. Fourteen and fifteen-year-old boys were almost men, and did not want to be seen clinging to a woman’s skirts. Two stewards counted the boys as they went by, noting each name on long sheepskin scrolls. A third collected their valuables for the toll and wrote that down as well. The boys were going to a place that none had ever been before, to serve an order that had been the enemy of their kith and kin for thousands of years, yet Jon saw no tears, heard no wailing mothers. These are winter’s people, he reminded himself. Tears freeze upon your cheeks where they come from. Not a single hostage balked or tried to slink away when his turn came to enter that gloomy tunnel. Almost all the boys were thin, some past the point of gauntness, with spindly shanks and arms like twigs. - Jon, ADwD
And this is where GRRM's oft mentioned quote comes into the play -
The villain is the hero of the other side, as sometimes said. That doesn’t mean that it’s all morally relative. That doesn’t mean that all things are equally good and evil. I think there is good and there is evil in the world, but I regard the struggle between good and evil as being waged within the individual human heart. ------ I’ve been always very impressed by Homer and his Iliad, especially the scene of the fight between Achilles and Hector. Who is the hero and who is the villain? That’s the power of the story and I wanted something similar to my books. The hero of one side is the villain of the other side. - GRRM
I sympathize with the Tullys and the Starks because we get their POV chapters and have spend time with them and are strongly pro Stark, pro Tully etc. And yet we get no such POV for the Freefolk even though characters like Mance Rayder are righteous in their goals, are shut off from the rest of the realm with a Wall and are only trying to survive.
Davos is often celebrated as being a voice of the Smallfolk despite supporting someone like Stannis Baratheon and yet I feel like Mance Rayder is where that praise should ideally go to. His freefolk parents killed by the NW, raised by the NW, experiencing first hand their bigotry and truly trying to help his people by gathering them together and getting to safety on the other side of the Wall. Like literally this should have been Jon Snow when defending the Wall against the Freefolk getting through...
And this is also why I dislike the double standards when it comes to Jon and Dany, both of noble houses, both their arcs as leaders having parallels in it's complexity and nuance - they both make morally grey and ruthless decisions and yet it's only Daenerys who is often called out on hers. Jon Snow's arc would be as much of a 'white savior' arc as Dany's and the only reason it isn't deemed as such is because of GRRM's orientalization of Essos. And that's a flaw of the writer, not the character.

Which is also why the AFfC Jaime chapters are so frustrating. It’s bloody book five and the Freys/Lannisters are still doing awful shit in the Riverlands, including torturing folks like Edmure Tully.
Ladystoneheart is a long time coming. I am so impatient for more LSH chapters taking these bastards down and yet it seems to be limited by the lack of a POV to prologue/epilogue chapters and some bits here and there from the Jaime chapter.
Look, i like the Lannisters, they are good characters, but reading asoiaf books is painful because the Lannisters had too many wins, plot armors and not enough punishment. The brutally murder of Rhaegar's children and Elia, Bran, Ned, the abuse of Sansa, the Red Wedding….terrible crimes
When Oberyn was killed by the Mountain i was like "ugh not again". Where is the payoff 😭
Things finally changed a bit when Tyrion killed Tywin (humiliating death he deserves), but they are still on the throne...
And i'm fucking mad that Cersei is the Lannister who was punished more than anyone else :/
I can't wait to see Tyrion, the son Tywin hated so much, bring Daenerys back to Westeros and King's Landing. AERYS' DAUGHTER.
Rot in hell, Tywin.
This is the only reason I'm also rooting for Aegon. I want to see everything Tywin built destroyed

Okay guys so now that I have calmed down from #Gendrya I just came to the thought of something very possible. In the trailers we always see Arya running in the crypts scared out of her life and obviously conflicted. Guys what if the person following is none other than Lady Stoneheart her mother who has come back as a white walker?

Honestly you didn't blame Arya at all in your posts so I dunno how why they're attacking you. I also find it funny how these people are accusing you for blaming arya for Mycah as if these weren't the same people who blamed sansa for Mycah dying. Honestly at the end of the day its the adults fault, not the girls. They should have been supervised etc.
Thank you.
It's just someone twisting my words. I never once implied that Arya was at fault or anything. People can get away with that victim blaming bs. I honestly did consider if I came across as such because I don't always understand how I can come across sometimes but I still couldn't find how they interpreted it so wrongly.
Honestly, that person could have simply asked me point blank if I was blaming Arya, it would have allowed me to explain my point and let them know clearly that this wasnt at all what i was saying. but instead they wrote down a huge pointless attack post with personal attacks and now people are reblogging it writing all sorts of things about me in the tags. It's not the first time that something like this has happened and while im not being viciously attacked or anything, the assumed hostility is very discouraging.
Yes none of the kids (except Joffery) is at fault. It's just sad that that the girls were put into this position where one reacted with fear and the other with rightous-ness yet the system was designed in such a way that in the end none of it worked and an innocent boy lost his life because it was deemed worthless.
#arya stark#Maybe its just me but I had the lovely experience of talking here about Arya with someone.#I don't remember what it was about cuz it was a few years ago but the gist of it was that i kept describing Arya with a word and they kept#reacting aggressively until they figured out that i didn't actually know the real definition of the word i was saying#English is my second language.#They told me what it was and then i joked about it and properly explained what i was trying to day#it turned out that they also agreed!#idk i keep putting all of interaction with anyone on this site at that standard#fandom drama#i wanted to talk about Jon Arya if and after Arya meets LadyStoneheart and the interesting dynamic that could come#with Arya reaction to Jon's death in the context of knowing how it might have messed him up just as badly as her mother.#but i guess i won't

IF ONLY FORGETTING COULD BE SO EASY. No amount of alcohol, hower strong, could make him forget she’s there, a silent figure, but no less dangerous for it. Ironic, isn’t it? That the things he wishes most to forget are the ones permanently stuck in his mind —— the horrible mess that Kings Landing had been, for one, and now this. Oh he acts fine, has to, or he fears what little is left of the brotherhood would scatter into the wind, now that Beric is gone, but it’s now, when the sun is down and a boy voices though questions, that the facade begins to crumble, cracking at the edges. Ale turns to ash in his mouth, as he is faced with what he has been desperately trying to avoid these past few days; still, Thoros gulps it down and then settles the cup — not quite empty yet — on the floor, not far from his feet. Has Gendry noticed? He is avoiding the flames, or rather avoiding looking at them for too long. A subtle change, but one nonetheless. « Aye, wouldn’t that be something? » his chuckle is short lived and bitter, no real amusement behind it. He is only borrowing time. Gendry wants answers, has every right to demand them —— too bad he doesn’t have them. Nothing new here, really. « Doing the right thing, lad, simple as that —— you think he wanted this to happen? » he couldn’t have known, neither of them could have. Thoros didn’t even believe it to be possible until Catelyn Stark came back —— wrong, sure, a shadow of her past self, but back anyway. « Do me a favor kid, don’t even think about doing anything stupid. » ╱ ╱ CONT ; @tymptir ( gendry w. )
#› thoros of myr ╱ ic#› thoros of myr ╱ a lighthouse on the coast ( replies )#› thoros of myr ╱ light doesn’t shine anymore ( verse ii ; post ladystoneheart )#› thoros of myr ╱ & gendry ( tymptir )#thoros: me?? forgetting shit?? yeah i wish#and with stupid he means don't do reckless shit and get yourself killed#you know in case it's contagious

I LOVE that Sansa says “the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives”. Because Littlefinger way to manipulate sansa was always to make feel her isolated, to make her depend on him, to have her think he was the only one she had, no other choice but HIM.
Except to get me out. He did that for me. I thought it was Ser Dontos, my poor old drunken Florian, but it was Petyr all the while. Littlefinger was only a mask he had to wear. Only sometimes Sansa found it hard to tell where the man ended and the mask began. Littlefinger and Lord Petyr looked so very much alike. She would have fled them both, perhaps, but there was nowhere for her to go. Winterfell was burned and desolate, Bran and Rickon dead and cold. Robb had been betrayed and murdered at the Twins, along with their lady mother. Tyrion had been put to death for killing Joffrey, and if she ever returned to King's Landing the queen would have her head as well. The aunt she'd hoped would keep her safe had tried to murder her instead. Her uncle Edmure was a captive of the Freys, while her great-uncle the Blackfish was under siege at Riverrun. I have no place but here, Sansa thought miserably, and no true friend but Petyr.
But now, WELL NOW, Sansa has returned home, in the place when lady bones are resting:
When it was over, he said, "Choose four men and have them take the body north. Bury her at Winterfell.""All that way?" Jory said, astonished."All that way," Ned affirmed. "The Lannister woman shall never have this skin."
The place that gives her courage and strength;
The hot water made her think of Winterfell, and she took strength from that.
She wondered where this courage had come from, to speak to him so frankly. From Winterfell, she thought. I am stronger within the walls of Winterfell.
She is reunited with members of her family. She is no longer the lone wolf, she has returned to her pack (like lady bones reunited with the others wolves...). So yeah i love it.
She had not thought of Jon in ages. He was only her half brother, but still . . . with Robb and Bran and Rickon dead, Jon Snow was the only brother that remained to her. I am a bastard too now, just like him. Oh, it would be so sweet, to see him once again.
#the parallels are coming true#and i dont know what to feel with myself#because#i had this theory since asos#so#welll#i dont know what to do#also sansa will say this while littlefinger dies#like i can bet on this#but also to littlefinger saying the line about not trusting him to ned before betraying him#so coming full circle#still convinced 1000000 percent#that JON will kill littlefinger#or be the reason for his death in some capacity#maybe the wildlings or the northen lords#still he will be involved not arya#arya has to meet ladystoneheart#sansa stark#she is part of this meta i guess#sansa meta#book quotes#show spoilers#asoiaf#game of thrones

Fic title: Paths Aligned
They pass the cooking area where a large Human in a white hat shouts orders to his employees while accepting a note from a tall Nautolan waitress. A mouth-watering scent of herbs and spices has Merrin’s stomach rumbling. The sound is overridden by the upbeat melody played by a band perched on top of a small stage by the opposite side of the room.
Cal taps her arm with his elbow and nods towards an area further into the hall. By a rectangular table where people are tossing cubes colored in red, real, orange, and yellow, stands Greez, mouthing at a tankard with a frothing drink.
“Hey!” he says when he sees them, his complexion turning a shade darker, “I was just looking for you! No gambling, as promised! I got us a table; it’s over there.”
He leads them towards the dinette area, passing two men playing a game over a grid square with differently shaped pieces, and coaxes them to sit by a table guarded by a large bronze droid. Merrin leans in to let Cal pass her and pauses when he places a hand on the small of her back. She meets his gaze, a rush of warmth flowing inside from his smile, and sits.
“Thanks for keeping the table, Emmie,” Greez says to the droid who nods. BD-1 emits an awed coo when she moves to stand by the wall to oversee the clientele.
“I’m kind of known around here,” Greez continues with a grin, “a bit of a legend, actually. I -”
Greez jumps when a small, orange hand lands on his shoulder.
“Greez Dritus! I knew it wouldn’t take long until I saw those bushy sideburns of yours in my castle again.”

This is just going to come off as me hating on Sansa, but if anything makes me believe that George would kill her off it would be the fact that she's had such little growth over the series in terms of actually learning/being taught politics. I always see people greatly overestimating her intelligence and accomplishments so it's hard for me to believe she's meant to outsmart LF. We only have two books left and she isn't even questioning him yet. She definitely could get that development but it would be weird for George to wait until the last two books to do so. I think it's more likely she has a part in it instead of being the sole reason. Her story has always seemed more about showing others plotting and adding suspense because she doesn't fully grasp the situation rather than being actively involved herself. That's just my thoughts on it though.
While GRRM has talked extensively of the lack of the 5 year gap with respect to Arya and Bran (He mentions in interviews of specifically wanting an older Arya and Bran Stark) IMO, the character most affected by the loss of the gap is Sansa, who really needed that time jump and off page development because the author has not written in an organic growth over several books for her.
Which is why I felt that even the Alayne TWoW sample chapter comes off as sudden, jarring and out of place with a newly confident Sansa flirting with Harry and talking about how much she loved the Vale and felt alive there. Seems to be a bit of a disconnect with how her last AFfC chapter ended. Still, I do think that with two books left, Sansa will start quickly connecting the dots - she has to for GRRM to wind up the LF character and plots there.
I do think GRRM intends for Sansa to take LF down, even if she ends up dying in the attempt. Sansa's been closely connected to the character since book one, there's the parallels between Sansa and Lysa (mirroring the parallels between Arya and Lyanna), the Sansa/Catelyn connection wrt LF and LF being one of the important human antagonists of the series. Sansa is an important POV character that keeps the reader connected to Littlefinger until GRRM decides that his story is done.
Which is why I am in the minority of opinion that it's Sansa and Ladystoneheart that are going to end up meeting/interacting through the Riverlands/Littlefinger story, first because I really, really want Catelyn/LSH to have a role in taking down LF (Revenge is a dish best served cold and I love vengeance!) and secondly in interviews GRRM has hinted at there being some kind conflict brewing between Emmon Frey and Littlefinger over being Lord of the Riverlands.
The Vale is closer to the Riverlands than Braavos and Arya in the Riverlands would be a retread of her ACoK/ASoS plot when she has more plot important things to do in the North - IMO. I am listening to AFfC right now and even Brienne's story there already feels like a retread of Arya's narrative themes in the Riverlands.
That said, if Arya does end up going back to the Riverlands for whatever reason - for ex. when she is helping/leading Northerners fleeing the Others or to figure out the food situation for the starving North - it could also be here where she and Sansa settle their differences after a reunion with LSH.
