Bugs I saw in my fuschias today:
Tumblr media
Spider. A lot of busy little spiders. There's a lot of sawflies to munch on. The sawflies are jerks.
Tumblr media
Ladybug larva. It's hiding well, but I'm pretty sure the spiders are aware of it.
Baby mantis. Run little one. You are not ready to face off against the spiders.
Tumblr media
Ladybug larva, noo! Retreat, retreat!

A little ladybug larvae fell on my mom's napkin while we were eating on a restaurant patio. She didn't know what it was and almost smacked it until I told her. They're kinda creepy looking, and they move like their middle is jelly but their other bits are spiky and brightly colored. They do look like they could fuck you up, tbh and they *can* bite, but ladybugs can bite too. I don't know the moral of this story. here's a picture of ladybug larvae.

A friendly ladybug larvae. I think his back looks the tiniest bit blue in the sunlight. I placed him in my garden to defend the tomatoes.

Our Beautiful Ladybug Larva are Growing Up
Our Beautiful Ladybug Larva are Growing Up features images of a fourth instar larval ladybug. This larva is very close to pupating. It compares this larva to a much younger one presented earlier and discusses how these changes occur in a very short time.
On Edge Back in June, I shared a post showing an interesting insect that I found on one of my hikes. It turned out to be a larval seven spotted ladybug (Coccinella septempunctata), which was a surprise to me and to many of you. It looked more like a caterpillar than it did a ladybug, but it was definitely still very pretty. At the end of July, I found another insect that I took to be some sort…

You have got to learn about the mundane wildlife in your area. The world becomes so much bigger and more exciting when you do. Start looking at the birds that show up in the backyard. Look up "backyard bird *my area*" and find out what they're called. If you live in the city, start looking at the pigeons and seeing how many different color morphs you can pick out. Look at the tops of buildings and see what kind of raptors are looking for a mouse to scuttle by at the right time. Look a little closer at the corner spider in your bathroom and try to identify it. Find out what type of trees you pass on your daily walk. Look at the patch of flowers you normally ignore. What kind of flowers are they? What's pollinating them? Are there squirrels in your region? How many different colors can you find them in? It almost becomes a game. You'll start looking for these things when you go out. You'll get excited when you see the rare black squirrel with the orange tail. You'll spy a bright yellow bird and go oh that's my friend goldfinch! One day you'll look at a patch of dandelions and want to squeal when you see an iridescent blue bee. You'll get to smugly correct your friends when they point out a "red headed woodpecker" and you get to say no, actually that's a red breasted woodpecker, you know because it's got the faintest blush of red on its breast and here let me show you an actual red headed woodpecker and- yeah yeah that's why that one gets to be the red head. No I don't know why they went with red breasted and not red capped, I didn't name the damn thing.
The world just gets a little more exciting when you learn about the little plants and animals that live right beside you. You'll see ants crawl in and out of flowers and think wow that must be so cozy. You'll watch the winter birds migrate in and kick snow out of the way to get to fallen seeds and watch the year round birds learn and repeat the behavior. You have to learn about and appreciate the little things, I promise, it's so worth it.

Bugs I saw in my fuschias, Part 3 (the lost bugventures)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aphids. The one on the left is my picture. These weird flaky shed skins were all over my plants a few weeks ago just like the internet pic on the right, but now only a few of the skins are left. The closest match is...cannibis aphids! This makes a lot of sense considering we already have cannabis worms. Something in our yard is attracting all these cannibis bugs! Weird.
Tumblr media
Even though my fuschias got two final blooms in, they both fell off. Between being repotted, the heat, and the aphids, the plant decided to ditch the flowers to save energy. Apparently the plant can just shed its own wants...especially fuschas. They are finicky.
I almost tried putting this organic pesticide called Neem Oil on the fuschias (gotta keep the plant healthy) but the risks were ridiculous. Not only did the label say that it wasn't safe for people or pets, but it specifically said that it might be bad for fuschias. So I'm looking for a different organic pesticide.
Anyway, turns out the spiders, baby mantis, and ladybug larva were all helping out the whole time by eating up all those yummy aphids. Maybe that's what the ladybug larva is doing below. They don't eat plants, so this one is likely eating something hard to see:

Today I found a bug at work and, after some research, learned it’s most likely a ladybug larva. First thing I thought was you, because omg, Google the little fellas if you haven’t seen them before- Seems right up your alley.
I personally find it very cute that apparently lady bugs have all gone through a “goth phase”. I mean look at all that black, and those spikes!
The one I found had a lot of attitude too. I tried to remove it from the showcase and she squared up. Turning side to side, tail curling up and down like she was a scorpion ready to attack. It would be a very intimidating display if she wasn’t so itty bitty.

Loved reading this message, adorable little things. I'll be keeping my eye out to meet one in person.

Halloween bugs. I liked the idea of a candy corn moth and jack-o’-lantern ladybug.
Why is it that the framing on my bug art feels impossible to get right.
