Brion is a highly decorated spoken word artist from Baltimore, MD. She has won slam competitions, becoming the 2016 National Poetry Slam Champion, and has been written about and featured in prestigious publications. In this piece, Lady Brion explores and celebrates the way Black people use language that defies the norms of colonization. It is a wonderful piece that calls into question the rulers and metrics that white society uses. These rulers and metrics are imposed upon us and we are conditioned to adopt them. They are created to exclude us though, and to achieve by their metrics, we either need to become multi-lingual (which many of us master) or need to reject our Black dialect, phraseology, syntax and flow. This imposition of a colonized standard extends beyond language and is used in other areas of our lives. For all of the (shall we say) "non-poetic" antics of my last night hosting @busboysandpoets @busboysandpoetsopenmic at 14th & V in 2017, one saving grace was having the brilliant and beautiful @ladybrion by my side to laugh through it all with. If last night at @busboysandpoets @busboysandpoetsopenmic 14th & V had a theme, it would have been "Doers Of The Most Unite!" We had 5 actual poets, 5 rappers (including a memorable mumble rap freestyler who managed to shout out Jesus Christ, Gucci Mane, and provolone cheese), 5 non-rap musical performers and 1 guy who just got on stage and announced that he had planned on rapping but didn't want to be narcissistic so instead just thought he'd ask everyone how they were doing. Then at the end this other guy offered me cash money to introduce him even though the show was over, the lights were on, and everyone was leaving. (I didn't accept; come earlier next time, homie.) Another memorable night hosting at 14th & V! Shout out to my Baltimore peeps @ladybrion and my feature @tesla214 who rocked his set while sharing some lessons in Baltimore's signature vernacular. ("F*ck is up, DUMMY?!") Life is better when you have friends to laugh about it with. (at Northeast Washington, Washington, District of Columbia)

"I talk Black. Jheri curl jargon." @ladybrion kept it gangsta and goddess at the same damn time in her phenomenal feature last night at @busboysandpoets 14th & V. A good feature makes the writers in the room want to write better, but a great feature also makes those alive in the room want to LIVE better. This was definitely the latter! (at Busboys and Poets)
