What is your favourite Doctor Who story?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ROUND 2 MASTERPOST
synopses and propaganda under the cut
City of Death
Synopsis
While taking in the sights of Paris in 1979, the Fourth Doctor and Romana sense that someone is tampering with time. Who is the mysterious Count Scarlioni? Why does he seem to have counterparts scattered through time? And just how many copies of the Mona Lisa did Leonardo da Vinci paint?
Propaganda
even if your not a classic who fan, you have seen moments from this, “wonderful butler, he’s so violent”, “youre a beautiful woman, probably”, “if you wanted an omelette I’d expect to find a pile of broken crockery, a cooker in flames, and an unconscious chef”. The location shooting, iconic, the music, iconic, the plot, so iconic I was once watching something (non doctor who) that referenced it as a fake historical event. Dare I say duggan is the greatest side character of all time. Romana’s outfit, the design of scaroth, the implication time lords can fly. it’s not my favourite overall, but its damn near close, it deserves AT LEAST the semi finals, AT LEAST. If you’ve not seen it or any classic who, go watch it, its so good, one of the best of the era. Also, how could I forget, the most watched episode on broadcast out of all of doctor who, including new who. (yes it was because itv was off the air due to strikes, but im glad its this episode that holds the record) (anonymous)
The Creature from the Pit
Synopsis
The Fourth Doctor and Romana II receive a distress signal and arrive on Chloris. It is a lush and verdant world with only small quantities of metals, all of which are controlled by its ruler, Lady Adrasta. Adrasta keeps order with the aid of her Huntsman and his Wolfweeds - mobile balls of vegetation. A band of thieves, led by Torvin, organise raids on her palace to steal whatever metal they can. But in the mines of Chloris is something huge, a creature thrown into the pit to be forgotten... and the Doctor is about to join him.

Why is K9's voice different in this one. I don't like it.
I wasn't a fan of the wolf weeds in this story, they were creepy.
Romana is just perfect in this one, I mean she's perfect in every story. But in this one, I wrote in my notes 'Queen'
I liked the scene with the whistle, poor K9 rushing because he could hear it. Made me giggle.
Overall I wasn't a fan of the story, and poor K9 got bullied in this one.
(Please don't take these too seriously, I am not a real life reviewer, just someone who likes the show)

Never Not Old
Never Not Old Eileen Way is one of those actors.  We’re reasonably certain, but only just mind you, that she was middle-aged, perhaps even younger, at some point, although we swear we can’t remember it.  And, more importantly for our purposes at this point, Doctor Who provides plenty of evidence to prove the point. There she is as Lady Karela in The Creature from the Pit in 1979, the nasty, wizened spine behind the equally nasty Lady Adrasta.  And there she is again–16 years earlier!–almost at the very beginning, in the middle two episodes of An Unearthly Child as the ‘Old Mother’ in the Cave of Skulls. She even appeared in the second Peter Cushing movie in 1966 as ‘Old Woman.’  Way was born in 1911 which means she was only 52 when Doctor Who came into her life and career.  She wasn’t old.  It just always seemed to be that way. After all it pays to specialize. The new-ish, young-ish HD caps for The Creature from the Pit are now online. Doctor Who: The Creature from the Pit
I rewatched this serial on 31 March 2023. I last watched it a few years ago with friends who were watching all of Doctor Who from the start… Oh, and we have a new actor providing the voice for K9 — David Brierley — who lends an archly camp tone to the character. It is wholly appropriate for this season in the stories in which the “tin dog” appears.
We begin on an alien planet where women rule. Meanwhile, in the TARDIS, K9 is reading a Beatrix Potter book to the Doctor until Romana spoils the ending! How rude. She’s also doing a bit of junk removal and they discover an emergency transceiver and receive a distress call. Of course it’s coming from the planet where women rule and the Doctor is captured. I adore how the locals immediately assume Romana is boss. While the Doctor meets the Lady Adrasta, Romana meets a bunch of men involved in banditry and desperately seeking metal.
This serial is not to everyone’s taste, but I think it’s fun in an absurdist and sneakily naughty way. I mean, who buys the story that Erato’s phallic design was entirely an accident? Especially with the femdom aesthetic of Adrasta and her people.

Myra Frances (1943- 2021)
Myra Frances (1943- 2021)
Myra Frances, best known to Doctor Who fans as Lady Adrasta in 1979 story The Creature from the Pit, has passed away aged 78. Frances held a pretty significant place in British television history, as she was one of two actors to feature in the first ever lesbian kiss to be broadcast in the country back in 1974. That was five years before she sparred with Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor, and in the…

Romana: "What is that creature in the pit?”
Lady Adrasta “We call it....the creature.”
Romana: “Oh how original.”
Me: Looks at the screen like somebody in the office.
I swear to god me and Romana think along the same wave-length 😂

Nightmare of Eden
Synopsis
The TARDIS arrives on the space liner Empress, which has become locked with a private ship, the Hecate, after colliding with it on emerging from hyperspace.
The Fourth Doctor and Romana meet the scientist Tryst, who has with him a Continuous Event Transmuter (CET) machine. It contains crystals on which are stored supposed recordings of planets that he and his team have visited.
Someone on board the liner is smuggling the dangerously addictive drug vraxoin. To complicate matters, the interface between the two ships allows some monstrous Mandrels from the mud-swamps of Eden to escape from the CET machine - which does not merely take recordings, but actually displaces whole planetary areas into its crystals.

“The Creature from the Pit” is an adventure of the seventeenth season of “Doctor Who” classic series, which aired in 1979. It follows “City of Death” and it’s a four parts adventure written by David Fisher and directed by Christopher Barry.
After intercepting a distress signal, the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) brings the Tardis to the planet Chloris, where metals are rare. Upon their arrival, he and Romana II (Lalla Ward) discover the remains of a huge egg in the jungle but don’t have time to study it because they get captured by locals.
The two travelers discover that the sentient inhabitants of the planet Chloris are ruled by the cruel Lady Adrasta, who controls the extraction of the very little existing metals. Opponents are thrown into the Pit, where an enormous Creature lives.

Lady Adrasta (Myra Frances) in the Creature from the Pit. She knew how to dress. (Actually the superb costume design of June Hudson.) The story is also considerably better than its reputation.
