The Captain & the Resident’s Daughter; an Introduction
. . . . . . . .
Rexsoka Week - Sunday - Crossover/AUs/Free
“That cat looks like he wants to murder us in our sleep.”
. . . . . . . .
This year’s Rexsoka Week will see the humble author expanding upon The Captain & the Resident’s Daughter, a work of fiction set in Bengal in the year of our Lord 1809, with a series of vignettes. The themes proposed for each day of this celebration will be honoured, and as such, it will not be possible to present them in narrative order until such time as they are published in the Archive of Our Own.
While it would behoove readers to make themselves acquainted with the aforementioned piece, the author has also conceived that the greatest benefit would arise from preempting this week’s seventh challenge with a scene that revisits our heroes and heroine the morning after the ball at Government House . . .
(N.B. this story is one-thousand words in length and contains period-typical attitudes and language.)
. . . . . . . . . .
“By heaven Rex, that cat looks like he would murder us in our sleep,” Anakin said upon waking. He had been unwilling to part company with Madame de Naberrie in the land of dreams and greet the humid, waking world, with its noisy aide-de-camps and hastily preserved tiger heads. “Whatever did you bring it out for?”
Miss Tanough’s tiger was draped over their adjacent dressing chests as Rex examined it in detail from stem to stern. “Was you not prodigious keen to see it?” asked he.
“La! One would think you had not lived ten years in this country and seen all manner of tigers, both living and dead.” Anakin was still disturbed by the overlarge yellow eyes and beady black pupils which rendered this specimen particularly uncanny. Without a maw bared in ferocious animosity, presumably because it had been robbed of its fangs, the skinned cat had the mien of a jaundiced half-wit.
“But I have never seen one done in by a girl,” countered Rex.
“Yes, well the little huntress might have gone for the head. It is uncommon ugly.” Anakin’s own head felt quite stuffed; he wondered at Rex’s sprightliness after he had fagged himself to death with dancing the night before — but while the ungallant General had plied himself with glass after glass to keep his hands politely engaged and to indicate a general unwillingness for a partner, his friend had hardly touched a drop. “Pray, did you gain the story from her in all your minueting? She remained awful close with me. Quite snippish, in fact.”
Rex shook his head in despair. After an indiscreet beginning (Rex could own as much with a head cleared of attar and punch), his conversation with Miss Tanough had touched lightly upon all and sundry; her journey beating up the Coromandel Coast — pirates and the likelihood thereof in those same waters — her moonshee’s dwarfism — Assaye — experiences of variolation versus vaccination as children — Rex’s prized Arabian, Jaig; but even with the twice necessary interruption for new partners, discourse had not returned to the tiger by the hour palanquins were called. “No, but I am sure the minute it’s put to her directly the talkative creature will — ”
A great feminine commotion cut Rex short. It flailed up the stairs of the bungalow to the simple room where he and Anakin had been shoved to make room for Miss Tanough and the General (whose modest bungalow this was). Presently, it made to invade the room itself with a few servile but stout knocks upon the door.
“General Skywalker!” cried Miss Tanough in a voice that surely would have startled the shirt off that gentleman, had he been wearing one. “Sir, I have not forgot your promise to ride out with me this morning, and Artoo and Jaig have been saddled and waiting this last hour. General Kenobey cannot accompany me, so here I am to beg.”
The gentlemen were much too stunned to act or speak with anything like the decision or promptness required by Miss Tanough. The door opened without so much as a by-your-leave. “Sirs? Oh! I see you have already helped yourself to my tiger. Captain Rex, would you do me the honour, as you are at least upright?”
En déshabillé though he was, Anakin could only thank every deity this side of the Meridian, of which there were many, that he had not come so far in his friendship with Rex that he permitted himself to sleep mother-naked. “Good god, Miss Tanough!” he exclaimed, fumbling with his only hand for that pile of calico shirt just out of reach.
Miss Tanough did not flinch in the company of undressed men. But the woman who piled into the room after her, a great heaving and flapping of chintz below a blousy dupatta and a round olive face, speechless as well for lack of breath, was very much discountenanced by the sight. She was the duenna, upon Christ’s life, and she was, to Anakin’s mind, not making a very auspicious beginning.
Only yesterday had she been led to the altar by the Gloriana’s master, her particular beau whenever that vessel dropped anchor in Diamond Harbor; the whole affair, including a wedding breakfast at the most respectable tavern in town, had been paid off handsomely by Commodore Ferris in order that Miss Tanough might have a chaperone unobjectionable to the Navy Board, to himself, to the crew, to General Kenobey, to Lady Tanough and to the Almighty, in that order. The newly-minted Mrs Olga Lucas was some parts Portuguese and passably of that nation, and whatsmore she was a Papist, which would satisfy Lady Tanough, who understood all females of that religion to be something akin to nuns.
Kenobey had not known of the regulations forbidding unmarried, unintended women aboard ships-of-war, the Commodore had supposed, or he would not have asked such an inconvenient and awkward favor. As Miss Tanough was not intended for anyone, she required a much older woman to make her sex and her sixteen years excusable, and the calculations of this problem had occupied Codry’s mind ever since he had received his patron’s offhand missive from the Masulipatam Road.
While this patron penned Mrs Lucas’s fresh credentials to Hyderabad, a hundred desculpes, senhores and cries to mãe de Deus were given up before the the poor, press-ganged bride succeeded in sweetly shaming her new charge from the gentlemen’s door with a bizarre patois of Portuguese, Hindoostani, and very bad English.
Silence returned, wafted around the room by the deaf punkah wallah next door and meekly broken by the creaking of the ropes.
“Hell and death, what a brassy chit!” exclaimed Anakin, who made no effort to rise. “We shall have no rest from here to the Solent, mark my words.”
Captain Rex did not mark them, nor did he half attend. Miss Tanough’s riding habit had been fetching in the extreme and he was hastily brushing out his best coat.

Pankaj and I first met in graduate school, by way of introduction from a mutual friend. Over the course of several months, our friendship blossomed. He asked me to go on a date with him several times; I was initially skeptical, but eventually conceded. I still remember staying up all night after our first date, talking about our families, our shared love of travel, and our life’s ambitions. It was as if we had known each other in a previous lifetime. We knew right away that we wanted to marry each other, but, of course, the actual proposal came years later. Ultimately, I found myself marrying my best friend and the man of my dreams.
What was your wedding style/theme/colors & how did it represent the two of you: Our goal was to create a magical, memorable, elegant experience for our family and friends, that was a true reflection of ourselves, our love, and our gratitude. The entire process really was a labor of love. Pankaj and I are both very detail-oriented people, so we poured our time and energy into making the wedding weekend an experience that everyone would remember forever. We brought on board Beth Helmstetter and Madeline Hunter, of Beth Helmstetter Events, to bring our ambitious vision to life. Beth’s creativity inspires me and she has such vast experience with luxury destination events; we knew that she was the one right away. Even now, several months after our wedding, we still receive countless compliments on how beautiful and meticulously planned the wedding was. The credit for that goes to her – she and her team are extraordinary. All events were held at the Ritz Carlton Bacara Resort & Spa in Santa Barbara, California. We wanted every event to be distinctly different from the others in terms of mood, décor, and color palette. The resort has such a striking beauty of its own, so it was important for us to keep the décor elegant yet simple, to enhance the natural beauty of the surroundings without competing with it. We were fortunate to be able to take over the resort for the weekend, so that all guests could be hosted on property to create a unified experience. The staff was amazing and took great care of our guests, which meant a lot to us.
The wedding was held over an extended weekend in September 2018. The events were as follows: Intimate mehendi gathering on Wednesday AM. The wedding festivities started with a small mehendi gathering on Wednesday afternoon. This was an informal event for family before the rest of the guests started to arrive. It was held in a private villa overlooking the ocean. The goal was to have my mehendi ready by Thursday night, so I could move around and enjoy the Welcome Party the following night. Vaishali Gordhan, of Henna by Vaish, was my mehendi artist. She has a wonderful energy and she did a beautiful job of bring my creative vision to life. We used fleur-de-lis motifs to symbolize the city of Paris, where Pankaj and I got engaged, and wave patterns to symbolize Santa Barbara. In the end, Vaish captured our love story beautifully through her art. I wore a crimson colored silk slip-dress and an off the shoulder blush cashmere cropped sweater. I paired it with mother’s vintage pearl and diamond necklace and earrings. The hair and makeup were natural.
Welcome dinner and Mehendi Party on Thursday PM: The Welcome Dinner was on Thursday night. It was a fun, summery, bohemian inspired event that was held in a private, enclosed lawn space on the resort for our closest family and friends. The space was decorated with suspended, hanging lights and hundreds of candles and lanterns. We had one long dinner table, which was draped with block print textiles and mismatched china. Centerpieces featured florals with feathers in dusty tones, periwinkle, and pale blush interspersed with gold lanterns and wooden bowls of heaping nuts and fruit. A separate lounge area with polished ivory furniture paired with mismatched block printed pillows and Persian rugs was created for guests who wished to get their mehendi done. Dinner featured a farm-to-table family style menu, incorporating seasonal produce local to the region. Guests especially loved that Ronobir Lahiri played renditions of modern songs on his sitar, filling the air with beautiful and mystical sounds. Pankaj wore a draped, mousepeach colored jersey kurta, with silk churidar style pants. He paired it with a mousepeach and silver brocade vest. All were from Shantanu & Nikhil. Accessories included an Omega watch, which was an engagement gift to him from my parents, and Grecian-style sandals by Joy. I wore a custom JADE by Monica and Karishma organza wrap blouse with a matching netted ivory and nude lehenga skirt. I paired it with champagne wedges and a Whiting & Davis silver clutch. Jewelry included Tiffany & Co gold leaf, pearl, and white diamond earrings and necklace. I paired this with my grandmother’s vintage gold and pearl bangles.
Wedding Ceremony on Saturday AM: The wedding ceremony was on Saturday morning, on a lawn overlooking the ocean. The celebrations commenced with a baraat procession around the resort property, which led into the wedding ceremony. Upon arrival to the ceremony, guests were greeted with rose water lemonade. The Hindu ceremony took place under an 18 foot mandap made of a light mango wood. Overgrown blooms in shades of deep red, fuchsia, aubergine, blush pink, and cream were wrapped around the mandap, giving the appearance that they had been there for years. The stage was covered in layered rugs in the same color palette. The ceremony was adapted to include our personal vows and ended with a kiss. Following this, guests enjoyed brunch overlooking the ocean. Pankaj wore an ivory sherwani from Sabyasachi, paired with a matching ivory raw silk kurta and churidar pants. In keeping with the tradition of his family, he wore an ivory silk safa tied in a traditional Rajasthani style. He paired it with ivory suede loafers from Joy, a vintage emerald kalgi brooch, and an emerald necklace. He looked so handsome! Originally, for my wedding day, I wanted to be a non-traditional Indian bride and wear a muted palette. However, as the setting of the ceremony was finalized, we realized that a more vibrant color would be more striking with the blue sky and ocean as our backdrop. I ultimately decided to wear a red and gold lehenga from one of my favorite designers, Sabyasachi. It was traditionally inspired, but with a modern feel – a perfect representation of who I am as a person. The blouse had a sweetheart neckline and the chiffon dupattas had playful gold polka-dots. The all-over golden embroidery featured an intricate paisley pattern. I paired it with gold wedges. My mom and I made a special trip to Hyderabad, the city in India where she was raised, to pick out my wedding jewelry. I ultimately decided on a set from Kishandas & Co, a heritage jeweler in Hyderabad. I wore a maang tikka headpiece, earrings, collar choker/necklace, and bangles featuring raw, uncut diamonds, emeralds, and pearls in yellow gold. It was exquisite and complemented the lehenga perfectly. The whole experience of picking it out with my Mom was a memory I will treasure forever. Bridesmaids wore couture saris designed by me, in collaboration with Megha Rao of holiCHIC. Groomsmen wore bespoke raw silk kurta-churidar sets arranged by Mallika Oberoi, an upcoming Mumbai-based designer. She was incredibly resourceful for our wedding outfit preparations!
Reception on Saturday PM: The reception was held later that evening. This was a formal affair with women in summery gowns and men in summer suits. We wanted it to feel like an intimate dinner party with 250 of our closest friends and family –it was romantic and elegant. Cocktail hour was held at sunset, on a bluff overlooking the ocean. Grey tarnished bars were donned with saturated blooms repurposed from the ceremony. Guests were greeted with custom cocktails and treated to sounds from Ybarra, a local Spanish guitarist. Guests were then escored to the Bacara ballroom, which was draped with a soft grey velvet. Half of the tables were light wood, and the other half were linened with a luxurious textured linen in shades of cream. We used a combination of cream velvet, rose velvet, and X backed wooded chairs. The tabletop featured gold leaf china with gold flatware and classic glassware. Centerpieces featured blooms in shades of lavender, blush, and aubergine. Blush and grey taper candles were placed in gold holders, with tealights in rose colored glass votives. We especially loved the chandelier with overgrown green foliage and twinkle lights, and the custom leaf-printed gobo projection over the dance floor. The rest of the room was filled with potted plants and trees, in keeping with my vision of bringing the outdoors in. One of the most special memories was our first dance, which was to “La Vie en Rose.” Anthony Ybarra, a local Spanish guitarist, was kind enough to play this for us. Pankaj and I had spent countless hours with our choreographer, practicing every turn and twirl. But, in that moment, nothing else mattered – it was just the two of us, husband and wife for the first time. This was followed by sentimental toasts from our parents, our siblings, and our closest friends. Shortly thereafter, guests jumped on the dance floor and didn’t stop partying until 2 am! The afterparty consisted of guests wrapped in blankets, under the stars, enjoying late-night snacks. It will be a night to be remembered for years to come! Pankaj worked closely with the Executive Chef at Bacara to develop a custom-plated Indian-inspired menu using local ingredients. Our triple-berry wedding cake was brought in from Sweet Lady Jane, one of our favorite LA bakeries. Pankaj wore a made-to-measure tuxedo from Tom Ford and woven leather shoes from Lanvin. He paired it with his Omega watch, and his David Yurman black diamond wedding band. I wanted to wear a soft pastel shade to complete the romantic feel of the event, and a modern silhouette that would contrast with my previous looks. In the end, I wore a custom blush version of the Sunset Gown by Naeem Khan. It was so special to be able to visit his atelier in New York and work with the team on this special dress. It featured a deep cowl neck at the back, and intricate crystal beading that shimmered under the candlelight. I paired it with a custom a yellow diamond bracelet, cocktail ring, and earrings. Shoes were from the French designer Jonak, and sourced from their store just steps away from where we got engaged in Paris. Clutch was from Inge Christopher.
For us, the most special parts were: -Milni: This is the Sanskrit word for “meeting” and is an opportunity for the family of the bride and groom to welcome each other. Our mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, and elders greeted each other, exchanging smiles and garlands of roses. It was really special to see their willingness to embrace one another.
-Vows: Somehow, in the all the last-minute preparations leading up to the weekend, I had forgotten to write my vows. I remember well staying up late to write them on the night before our wedding. Once I put the pen to paper, though, the thoughts flowed freely. It was very special to be able to share these promises to one another, in front of our friends and family.
What about your venue made it “the” place: Pankaj and I had always fancied a destination wedding. We really wanted to create something special and memorable for our guests, who would be flying in from all over the world. We explored several destinations, but ultimately kept coming back to Santa Barbara. We have a long-standing tradition of visiting every year: it’s stunning and picturesque, but also feels familiar and intimate. It’s one of our favorite places, and we wanted our family and friends to fall in love with it just as we did many years ago.
What flowers were used in your bouquet: The bouquet featured blooms in shades of fuchsia, raspberry, burgundy, nude, and pale blush. Holly, our florist, affixed lockets containing photos of each of my late grandparents on their wedding days at the base of the bouquet. This was a really special way to include them in the festivities.
What from your wedding was DIY: One of the most fun aspects of wedding planning was preparing for the Sangeet dances. We had a joint dance for Pankaj and I, a bridesmaid dance, a groomsmen dance, and then one huge group dance.
We hired a local choreographer, Ana Perales of Get Amped Entertainment, to help us create Western choreography to several of our favorite Bollywood songs. Most of our bridal party didn’t have dance backgrounds, so we were really humbled by everyone’s willingness to participate. It was endearing to see how focused and eager they were to master the moves! The whole process brought us much closer together as friends.
Most memorable moment from the day: One of my favorite memories was our first look, which took place on a private bluff overlooking the ocean. The clouds were clearing, and the sun was breaking through; there was something so beautiful about it. At the time, it felt like some sort of blessing. In that moment, there was a rush of emotions. I’ll never forget the look in Pankaj’s eyes – we couldn’t hold back our tears of love and joy. We had both been dreaming about the day for so long. Now, in hindsight, we never could have anticipated how that moment would change our level of commitment to one another and solidify us as a team, ready to take on the adventures of life ahead, hand in hand. Another really special moment was the Father Daughter/ Mother Son Dance during the Reception. Pankaj and I wanted to recognize the special role our parents have played in our lives. Without them, we wouldn’t be who we are today. In an effort to acknowledge them for that, we did a Father-Daughter/ Mother-Son Dance. While the dance itself was space, the preparation for it was arguable more memorable. We took two joint dance classes at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Santa Barbara during the week leading up to the wedding. There were lots of smiles and laughter (and crushed toes)!
How long it took you to plan & the biggest hurdle you overcame: We planned our wedding over the course of a year and a half. Pankaj and I are both physicians, and our unpredictable work schedules would have made it hard to plan any quicker. For us, it was just the right amount of time to be thoughtful about our decisions and mindful of the guest experience. The biggest hurdle was learning to reconcile our differences of opinion. In the end, we compromised and our weekend really was the best reflection of both of us. We are both very proud of what we accompanied. I am in tears every time I look thought our photos and watch our highlight film! I believe that planning a wedding represents the first of many challenges in life, and it’s important to remember that things won’t always go as planned. That’s OK. Focus on what is most important: the commitment to love each other unconditionally and to prioritize each other above all else. Stay positive and forward-thinking. Having all of your loved ones in the same place to celebrate one of the most special moments in your life is priceless. Other advise would be to put yourself in the shoes of the guests. They have come long and far to celebrate this day with you. How can you make the experience enjoyable and seamless for them? When planning your bridal looks, start as soon as you can. It takes a lot of time to produce, ship, and alter these garments. And, on top of that, you need accessories for multiple outfits. Decide early and order well in advance! Meet in person with key professionals that will be with you throughout the weekend. You want to make sure that you are surrounded by the right kind of positive energy during that time. When it came to assembling the rest of our team (photography, videography, makeup artist, priest), we were very discerning. I had a particular vision of how I wanted things to look and be captured, so I spent a lot of time researching, meeting with, and selecting the right people to make it happen. They all did a wonderful job.

My Calling
Your calling shows up in your childhood and keeps coming back throughout your life. Here is how I tried to figure out what is my calling. Creative expression and power of observing beauty in ordinary things On a dark, no-moon summer night I reached the lakeside near my home. One of my uncles, a cousin brother to my father, carried me in his lap and took me there for a little outing. The wavy vertical reflection of the streetlights on the water were the first thing to catch my fancy . “Look, how the lights are melting in the water”, I pointed out towards the lake and told my uncle. I looked around and could not see much in the darkness. I looked up. Though there was no moon, the sky was smog-free, glittering with stars. I raised my little hand towards the sky and pointed at a star, “The sky looks so beautiful. Can you see that star? It is looking like a sparkling dot on the forehead of the sky, like the one mom puts on when she dresses up,” I told my uncle. He noted my ability to express creatively and conveyed the same to my mum after returning home with me. He told her, “Your daughter could be a poet one day.” That was my very first memory about my spontaneous response as a child towards images and nature. When I reflect on it, I realize my inner self connecting with the present surroundings. I see my ability to observe beauty in mundane things. Though blunted by the worries of the world, I do notice some sparkles in my musings even today.
Ability to feel oneness with nature, being in the present I am aware of my natural ability to feel the calming stillness and poignant poise of the universe. The way it cradles the enormous play of contradictory yet complementary forces of life and death, creation and destruction, intrigues me.  As a child, I would find myself playing alone with my earthen and brass toy utensils under the shade of a tree. Yet, I did not feel I was alone. The tree, the butterflies and the bees, the sparrows gave me company. I spoke to them. I felt their lively presence and my oneness with them. Now, I realize, I was so much in sync with nature. After living in the concrete jungle for almost the better half of my life, I still seek oneness. I have not forgotten my relationship with nature – where I come from, where I belong and where I would go back. I do feel it sometimes by looking at the tree outside my window or the indoor plant in my room. Ability to feel the pure joy in the positive energy of life In late-winter afternoons, I insisted to sit outside my home. The local tribal people would come in a flock to sweep the fallen dry leaves. The picture still sticks to my memory. The young tribal women would sweep the spread of crunchy faded leaves into a heap.  Their toned bodies would be wrapped in colorful cotton saris. They wore seasonal local flowers in their hair buns behind their ears. They would sing folk songs in a typical aboriginal tune while doing their work. The men would sing along by way of whistling. They would help the women collect the dry leaves and twigs into a heap and then light it up in a fire. I did not understand what they said to each other while doing their work. Now I know the men would crack some jokes or playfully tease the women and they would giggle and quip back. I watched them with so much wonder and amazement. The smoke billowing up from the burnt leaves wafted in the winter-on-retreat breeze. I would feel a mild burning sensation in my eyes and nostrils. I would still sit there and not respond to my mother calling me out to return home. I would sit there as if as a spectator of the eternal drama of life playing out on the earth. I perceived the whole scenario through all my senses as it was. I keenly watched everything. I felt a pure joy – not induced by any purpose or plan. I stayed there as a part of the scene, without any thoughts or emotions shadowing my sense of being. In retrospect that was the ‘self’, the consciousness as an objective observer. It is present in all. It is independent of  concepts, perspective and perceptions. As we grow, we lose the ability to feel pure joy and happiness inherent in our being. I don’t think as an adult I could retain the ability to tap in that ability. I am again in search of it. At least I am aware of where my happiness lies. You may have more than one calling and develop one or each of them into a successful career or business. My innate attraction to handicraft, writing, storytelling Gradually, I discovered my innate attraction towards handcrafted products. I grew up in a home full of such items. They appealed to my inherent sense of aesthetics. They ignited my imagination with curiosity and care. I liked my mother's walnut jewellery box with Kashmiri floral curving on it. The lacquered wood, bright red, handprinted powder case on my mother’s dresser attracted me a lot. She bought it from Mysore. My mom loved tuberoses. She would organize a few sticks of it in he grey Bidri long neck metal flower vases with slivery inlay work on it. This was from Hyderabad. It would be kept on a Kashmiri,  small teapoy in the drawing-room. There were quite a many items from Kashmir. There was a Kashmiri carved-wood book holder on the bookshelf. The cane center table from Assam sat on a  Kashmiri ‘Namda’ rug.  I was also very fond of the heavy, metal coin box with Bidri work on it from Aurangabad in my mother’s cupboard. I would keep staring at the set of sherbet glasses in the kitchen cabinet in fluorescent colors. The delicate, transparent, animal figurines in handblown colorful glass, decorated our living room shelves. Those were from Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh. The crocheted tea coasters and the porcelain tea set in the sideboard were so elegant. I loved my mother’s collection of   marble and sandstone miniatures. She bought them from Puri, Jabalpur and Agra. Then, I did not know those were handmade by artisans from various parts of my country. Later, as I grew up, I developed a curiosity for the products as well as an affinity with their creators. For my line of clothes and interior decoration, I preferred handloom and handcrafted products. I developed an interest in the various crafts of India for its heritage and nature friendly values. The human story element in it, its economic value for rural India and last, but not least, its beauty appealed to me. I ended up trying to be a micro-entrepreneur in this sector. At the same time, I started writing poems. It was around the 7th or 8th year of my life. I co-authored my first poem with my first childhood friend, my namesake too. It was about the current hairstyle of young guys – sort of a comical view on men’s contemporary fashion sense! My second poem was about the moon and the charkha spinning old lady. I would lay flat on my back on the green, slightly prickly grasses of the park behind my home. I would look at the matt white, almost a full moon in the pre-dust, pale blue sky. I read about an old woman who lived in the moon and spun reels of white thread out of heaps of cotton in a fairy tale. I would imagine her working at her spinning wheel while looking at the shadows on that early evening moon. Since then, I have always been expressing my deeper thoughts and feelings through writing. In my adult life, I worked as a professional writer. Right from my early teens, I found my enthusiasm in telling stories. I had the ability to observe, visualize, recall, and represent. Few of my school teachers noticed it. They would deploy me to keep the class engaged by telling my fellow students a story. These qualities came in handy when, later in my life, I worked as a feature journalist, a blogger, and a writer. Ability to think critically and freely During my late teenage, I often found myself debating with my elders. I raised questions on the social and moral educations they imparted. I questioned many things the established system wanted me to believe. I took part and enjoyed the religious occasions for their festive and family spirit. But I could never develop faith in worshipping deities or following rituals. My spiritual thoughts formed in my mind without any formal knowledge. Initially, it did not have any conscious allegiance to any dogma, or ‘ism’. I never hero-worshipped any individual. Be it celebrities, politicians, spiritual gurus, teachers, or social reformers. Rather, I always wanted to learn from or focus on their work, thoughts, and philosophy. It helped me in working on various types of feature stories. Connecting with people through heart Though I was never an extrovert, right from childhood I felt the natural urge to connect to people on the empathetic ground. It helped me to not develop arrogance and pride; it helped me to remain grounded. It encouraged me to be curious about human psychology and behavioral science. Currently, I have embarked on a new journey as a certified Life Coach. My motivation is to help people in their endeavor to live a better life.. The work challenges my evolution as a better version of myself. It involves dealing  with one's own tendencies to be judgmental, biased and egotist.  a helping profession of a Life Coach needs self-study.
Courage, conviction, adaptability, zeal to learn new things and resilience in face of challenge When thrown into challenging situations in life, I found myself wading and surfing through the waves of upheavals. I faced and responded to the demand of the situation. I had my share of slipping off my surfing board. Sometimes I drowned in the turbulent water of adversity. I experienced my and other’s vulnerabilities. I did make mistakes and wrong decisions giving way to more problems. While in my endeavors to make, restore or rebuild things, I ended up breaking a few.  I caused hurt to my loved ones, loss and damage to them. It taught me some practical lessons that everyone should know to be more in control of one’s mind, money and matter. At the same time, it taught me to see life in its larger perspective. It taught me to forgive and give everyone, including myself, another chance. It taught me not to lose faith in the innate richness and healing process of life. I got to know the power of human mind. It constantly challenges me to rise above ego and objectively deal with people and situations. It helps me to evolve. I broke free of my comfort zones. I came out of my marital home, went to court seeking a divorce, raised children as a single parent. I was a homemaker. But I went out, sought and tried different jobs for supporting myself and my family. I did my stints at HR, direct marketing, hotel front desk, home food service, selling saris, IT job till finally I got into my kind of jobs in feature journalism and writing. At every job I learnt new skills, got acquainted with new work culture, came across various types of people. I experienced workplace harassment. Yet I had to deliver what was expected of me. Till the time I got into a writing job, I accepted and tried every other opportunity that came my way. Those were neither  my calling nor I wanted to carve a career out of them. I had to do them to meet the urgent needs of my family during the huge financial crisis. There was no option to plan a career, pick and choose. This expanded my horizon of understanding people and situations from different perspectives. I leant to do it without the temptation of judging them. It helps me in my service as a Life Coach. My energy synergy I have observed bright, sunny, cool mornings energize me the most.  Hope, faith in life-force, urge to work, gratitude peak in my mind during this time. Dusk sees an ebb of energy and agility in me. It feels little depressing during this time. Another day gone from my life, another day closer to my grave makes me feel a bit low at this point. It is very important to spend a productive day.  Being  present in the present helps to beat the blue a crimson sunset brings in. But post evening I find my mind being able to focus on work again, especially writing. Understanding one’s energy synergy helps in aligning his/her work schedule. It boosts  best productivity. My exploration list It contains the things I want to do or would do imagining no constraints or limitations stopping me. Such a list also indicates where our calling lies. Though I prefer to keep it to myself, I will share a couple of things from my exploration list here . Travelling tops it. Next is starting a co-creative learning center and a staycation.

US First Lady Melania Trump visits Delhi govt school, welcomed with tilak - Times of India
Tumblr media
NEW DELHI: US First Lady Melania Trump on Monday arrived at a Delhi government school to attend a ‘happiness class’. She was given a traditional welcome by students who lined the entrance holding flags of the two countries in honour of the visiting dignitary.
A young girl student handed a bouquet to Melania as the First Lady wore a tilak on her forehead after being welcomed with an ‘arti thali’.
Wearing a white middy length dress with flowers imprinted in yellow and red, Melania will be spending around 15-20 minutes while interacting with the students and teachers of Sarvodaya Vidyalaya Senior Secondary School co-ed school in South Moti Bagh.
The school has undergone beautification work in view of the US First Lady’s visit.
“We have been beautifying the path through which Melania Trump will go to the school. All municipal departments are busy in the preparations,” Vasant Vihar Councilor Manish Agrawal had said.
“This is a very proud moment for us that the US First Lady Melania Trump is visiting the school in our ward. As soon as we got the news by school’s administration, we began our preparations for the visit,” he added.
In addition, the young and enthusiastic school children were dressed in bright-coloured sarees and traditional dresses like ghagra-choli to welcome Melania.
Some of them were also carrying bagpipes and several other musical instruments.
Special classes by the name of Happiness Classes were started by the Delhi government in its schools in 2018.
As a part of the programme, students are taught various activities including meditation, street plays and basic obedience with an aim to reduce anxiety and stress levels among children.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s names have been dropped from the school event Melania is scheduled to visit on February 25.
Last week, the US Embassy here had stated that it had no objection to the presence of Delhi Chief Minister and his deputy during the US First Lady’s visit to the government school, but “it is best to ensure focus is on education, school, and students.”
Programme organisers, who are engaged in arranging the visit of the First Lady, said that she would witness the programmes organised by the children followed by a short meeting with the staff.
In view of Trumps’ visit, the Delhi Traffic Police earlier today issued an advisory for February 24 and 25 asking people to keep VVIP movement in mind while planning their commute. However, there will be traffic diversions as per the ground situation for the smooth flow of traffic.
US President Donald Trump and his wife, along with the US delegation, will be in India on a maiden two-day visit beginning from February 24.
On Monday, Trump had a jam-packed schedule in Ahemdabad. Upon his arrival, the dignitary addressed a mammoth crowd of around one lakh people during the ‘Namaste Trump’ event at Motera Stadium and then left for the Taj Mahal to spend roughly an hour experiencing the historic monument before flying to Delhi.
Earlier today, the US President was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. From there, he went to the Rajghat to pay homage at the samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi and then headed to Hyderabad House for other engagements.
Trump is scheduled to meet President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan at 7:30 pm before departing for the US by his special flight on Tuesday night.

For Kareena Kapoor Khan and Sonam Kapoor-Ahuja, the rest of May is going to be exceptionally busy. Both actors joined Shikha Talsania and Swara Bhasker at Veere Di Wedding promotions last afternoon, while Diana Penty spread the word about her latest film Parmanu in camouflage trousers, and Aditi Rao Hydari made a case for printed pants at an event in Hyderabad. Among the few Bollywood ladies who went with Indian ethnic looks yesterday, Sonali Bendre stood out for choosing that yellow, green and blue Payal Khandwala sari, while Madhuri Dixit Nene went down the subtler route with a black version by Jade.
Kareena Kapoor Khan wears a colour you’re rarely seen her in before
From bright sunny yellows to rich navy blues, Kareena Kapoor Khan has been showcasing a preference to strong colours this summer. Yesterday, the actor added yet another interesting hue to her repertoire at Veere Di Wedding’s latest promotions.
Spotted at Mumbai’s Sun-N-Sand hotel, Kapoor Khan met the media last afternoon in a chocolate brown midi that was anything but basic. Created by African label Meena, the midi dress featured peek-a-boo panels on both sleeves, an unexpected cut on the waistline and layers of cascading fabric sewn onto the skirt. With all that going on in just one dress, Kapoor Khan kept the rest of her look fuss-free with strappy gold sandals and avoided any makeup.

Sonam Kapoor-Ahuja gets comfortable in oversized separates
Post her Veere Di Wedding outing of the day, newly-wed Sonam Kapoor-Ahuja joined husband Anand Ahuja for a dinner date last night in Mumbai. And if you’ve been looking for a white shirt that’s comfortable enough to wear in the Mumbai heat, you can’t miss her latest pick.
For her night out, Kapoor-Ahuja picked an oversized version of the wardrobe classic, and wore her roomy shirt with tracks that were hiked up to her shins, showing off her bridal mehandi. The actor completed her off-duty look with black slip-ons and a matching black tote. Poker straight locks were her beauty pick.

Swara Bhasker also picks a solid hue
Sonam Kapoor-Ahuja wasn’t the only star to favour ivory yesterday. While Disha Patani grabbed dinner in tiny white shorts last night, Shilpa Shetty Kundra brought in son Viaan Raj Kundra’s birthday in a white mini, and Swara Bhasker chose an outfit in the classic colour for Veere Di Wedding promotions as well.
Keeping her look simple, yet impactful, Bhasker picked an Andrea Iyamah dress featuring sculpted ruffles along the hemline, and worked the timeless black and white combo by picking ebony Miu Miu mules. The shoes featured metallic blooms on top, which added a touch of drama to her look.

July 1st…
It was a Sunday but not a regular one. I was to travel to another extreme of the city to write an exam. After graduation, writing exams remained no same. It’s not like you have passed the exam and here’s your job, okthankyoubye. I barely had any preparation but I had to write the test anyway. I was serious for a while, trying to cover as much as I could. But 2 days prior to the actual exam I lost it. I was roaming here and there, doing everything except studying. Unlike any other exam, I was not nervous because I already knew how bad my prep was. Even though I was not nervous for the exam, there were other things that troubled me.
I am that kind of a person, who used to complete her syllabus, got ample time to revise it and still got stressed before exam. I could not sleep, could not eat, my digestion system used to forget how to digest food instead of constantly pushing the food upwards in the food canal. My hands used to shake and my stomach ache. My parents took special care of me during exams, from cooking the light food to taking me to the exam hall, sometimes spoon-feeding me. (That’s kind of gross, I know.) This continued till I was at home with my parents. I didn’t have a medical condition but before every exam, I fell sick. It was the anxiety that made me sick. Years later, I still have that issue, except my parents can’t no more take care of me like a baby.
Besides my physical un-wellness, there is overthinking to make things even worse. For example, for this Sunday’s exam I had to wake up at 5 in the morning and start by at least 6 to reach the exam center by 8. They gave the address in the admit card. I searched it up and found it was 1 hour’s journey by car. I didn’t know the place, I copy-pasted the whole address in the OLA app. It wasn’t able to identify the whole input and was showing some nearby place.
I was afraid that I would end up going to the wrong place and I would search for the exam hall till it was too late to be allowed inside the hall. …that my driver may take me in the wrong direction. …that I may sleep till 9 am like other weekend and miss the exam. …that I may throw up in the car. …that I may not be able eat breakfast. …that I may need to go to poop during exam. …that I may forget to bring admit card.
I am not even exaggerating, this is exactly what my mind is before exam. I booked a cab at night (there’s an option to schedule a ride in future), I ordered some sandwich for breakfast and went to bed 2 hours earlier than normal. I didn’t get enough sleep, I woke up well before the alarm.
I nibbled on a sandwich and packed the rest, checked my back-pack for 6 times to be sure that I had everything I needed. I took a shower and dressed up. My cab was scheduled for 5:45 a.m. but the driver cancelled the ride without calling me. What is the point of scheduling a ride if driver is gonna cancel it at the last moment? Luckily I got another cab in time. While the driver asked me about the drop, I had to confess that I didn’t know the way, I told him to follow the maps.
Oh my God! Now he knows that I don’t know the way! What if he drives me to the wrong direction?
I was following the map but as the map was not showing the exact building I was still skeptical about it. I was feeling sleepy and a little bit hungry as well. I was suffocating inside the car even if ac was on. The driver played some telugu song. I don’t know the language, I don’t know the context, it seemed to kill my brain cells one by one. I felt too shy to ask the driver to slow it down or stop it rather I chose to suffer. I wanted to close my eyes as I was feeling tired for the lack of sleep but I had to FOLLOW THE MAPS! By the time I reached the venue, my head was spinning, I was feeling as if somebody is hitting my head with a hammer. There was vomiting tendency as well. I felt better after drinking some coconut water.
I don’t know why exams make me so sick!
Finding the exam center was not hard, people were gathering near the gate. As usual bags were not allowed inside. They had 2 counters where people could deposit their bags and mobile phones for 20 rupees each. In the bag counter they didn’t take responsibility of any valuables inside the bag. I forgot to take out my purse and deposit it with my mobile phone. For the rest of the time, another fuel to anxiety added on.
What if my purse is lost or stolen? I don’t have any money to get a cab! What will I do then!
Then it was time to go to poop. It may sound ridiculous but whenever I’m too much nervous, I need to go to toilet and the need is absolutely UNAVOIDABLE. Luckily they had ladies washrooms, even though the door locks were on the verge of falling apart. Public washrooms are the worst. There is not guarantee of having water, tissue and soap/hand-wash.
Dear God, please save my dignity this time, please don’t send anyone in the way to this washroom till I’m here. If anyone pushes the door slightly, it will just open defeating the purpose of its existence. God heard my plea for sure.
Finding my seat wasn’t difficult, neither was the question paper. Nevertheless my exam was bad. I didn’t expect to do better anyway. The guy next to me probably said something to me in Telugu, I am not sure. I didn’t answer anything! The exam was over in one hour and all my sufferings, headache, stomach ache, everything vanished. Once again I was fully fit young girl. I collected my bag and mobile, booked my cab to home and waited outside the exam hall.
For my return, I booked a share ride as it was too costly to book personal ride. There was a middle aged lady seating in the front seat and a girl of my age at the back. In share rides you need to pay about 50 percent of the fare while spending almost twice the time in the journey. I didn’t have a problem as I wasn’t feeling sick anymore. I opened the window and enjoyed the cool air listening to “Hey there Delilah” in my phone.
Hey there, Delilah What’s it like in New York city? I’m a thousand miles away But, girl, tonight you look so pretty Yes, you do Times Square can’t shine as bright as you I swear, it’s true
Hey there, Delilah Don’t you worry about the distance I’m right there if you get lonely Give this song another listen Close your eyes Listen to my voice, it’s my disguise I’m by your side…
I didn’t care to follow the map, I just closed my eyes and started making plot of a lit video. I can tell you, some of the world’s greatest music videos I have imagined in my mind just like that seating in the window seat.
The car was running on the roads of Secunderabad, the part of Hyderabad I had never been to. It’s old, crowded and almost similar to my hometown in the looks. I saw the local trains after years. I grew up at a place where train line was a 100m away.  We used to hear the whistles, the announcement in the platform, the rumbling sound of the train all day, everyday. I saw the carpentry shops that piles up new and old wooden furniture outside them. I knew a similar road on my way to school, carpentry shops on either side of the road. Then I saw the local fruit markets, piles of fresh fruits at insanely cheap rate.
These are small things that were part of my everyday life. The people look very much the same, even when they won’t understand a word if I start speaking in Bengali.
Except the terrible exam, everything went fine. I enjoyed my long ride to home, on returning home I had a little food and took a good long afternoon nap until my roommate finally knocked the door.
That’s all for today. Thanks for reading! 🙂

Romantic Bus Sex I Had With A Married Lady
Romantic Bus Sex I Had With A Married Lady

Even, I was not in a condition to sit. The water was dropping from my dress and from my hair. I was not able to concentrate on what to do, where is my seat and who is nearby. I have only one concern…

From breaking all stereotypes to becoming a Badminton champ: The story of Anusha Raju
When most of us go all dressed up to a Friday night party, this girl prefers to sweat it out at the Football turf with studs strapped to her feet, experiencing adrenaline rush with a bunch of lads hitting the ball out of the park. Anusha Raju is breaking all stereotypes that have been built around women for ages!
Oh well! You should be wondering why Football when the title clearly refers to a “Badminton Champ”. Yes, the avatar I spotted Anusha in was clearly a Football Gear but little did I know she has won big championships in Badminton until I had this vibrant chat with her.
I pose a quick question to her asking “Why Football and not any other sport?” and she throws me by surprise highlighting her love for Badminton and Football as well. Anusha is not like any of us, her fantasies run wild and unique. She wanted to build an all-girls team of Football players and she did nothing less to make it come true. With a group of girls from a corporate sector, she put together a team of enthusiastic athletes and stormed to the turfs to make her evenings all about the Sport.
Anusha Raju playing Badminton
Talking about breaking stereotypes, she is one of the very few sports enthusiasts in India who has won tournaments without taking a professional training. From being ranked  No.1 in the Defence Club to winning quite a few corporate Badminton tournaments, this Hyderabad-born girl proves she is a natural and sports is always running through her blood.
Badminton is my major and I can kick some ass. I used to play at club level and university level. Badminton was my first love and I always wanted to take it to the next level. I still keep in touch with the sport.
Her love for sports spread too wide and reached her career as well. With Nike being her “dream company”, she fought against all odds to make her dreams come true. A B.Com graduate and a Fashion management student, Anusha now works full-time for the Nike Pan-India store.
So what’s her favourite football team? She gleefully replies that she doesn’t watch TV at all let alone Sports. But the best part is she never forgets to sweat it out on the courts.
Anusha Raju receiving the winners award
Everybody has an inspiration. That’s where we draw our energy from whenever we feel low in life. Assuming Anusha’s inspiration would be a sports star, I go ahead and put the question to her. It was no surprise when she popped up saying her idol is none other than “Saina Nehwal“. Being a Badminton player herself she could relate to the amount of pressure the Indian Olympic medalist undergoes, with the expectations of the whole nation resting on her shoulder and she is all praises for her. If she could be someone in her life, she would choose none other than Saina herself.
It is very close to my heart. It was everything to me at one point. I was someone who used to go play before my board exams.  For me it was a Stress Buster. I used to drive 20 km in Hyderabad from school and I used to drive 6 km on the other side to play and come home around 8 ‘0’ clock in the night all drenched and tired. But the feeling after that was so amazing. So for me, if it was a rough day, go to the courts; if it was a happy day, let’s go to the courts. Whether it was celebrating or venting it out, for me it had so much to do with the courts and that’s why it’s so close to my heart.
This was the beaming reply from Anusha on asked about why people should instill the culture of playing sports in their lives.
Most of us would choose party on a friday night and opt out of sports. But this lady does things in style. When asked about what she would choose, “Football on a friday night or Party on a friday night?” this is what she had to say:
While everyone is dressed and ready to party, I always landed up in my shorts. In fact every saturday evening, when I start with Football, I used to go all the way to Yemlur and by the time I come back, People are all ready to party. So I always landed up in my Football gear. I am just so happy to be in my sport shoes and gear. Sports plays a huge role in my life.
She was never the woman who went down to a man. Instead she used to take it to the Badminton courts and thrash them with smashes. Ask her if anybody has looked at her surprisingly for being so good at sports and cornered her with statements like, “Oh my God! You are a girl! How are you so good at sports?”, she says that those cases have been very rare but every time something like that happened, she let her sport do the talking. A sport lover with a great spirit, Anusha has always been up for sports no matter what time of the day it is.
You better like what you are doing
One line, speaks a lot for itself. This is how she quotes it.
It is always better to go after your passion just like how Anusha made it a point to get into her dream company, Nike, amidst all the diversions. Sports was her love and she made it her career. After all, what tastes sweeter than success!
