This Bangalore Based Engineer Cycles All The Way From Vijayanagar To ITPL For Work
Do you remember the last time you took out a cycle and went on a ride? Most of us gave up on the habit of cycling as we grew up. When we were kids we couldn’t wait to learn to cycle and get the coolest one in the entire neighbourhood. It was such a pride and it kept us engaged all day. Little did we know about the benefits cycling filled us with back then.
As we grew up, the cycle just became a thing of the past and motorcycles and cars took over. Even in today’s scenario where people prefer to buy Harley Davdisons and BMWs, some people take their cycle’s out for work. Why? Because Cycle is Pure Love. One such person, whom I had the privilege to meet was Adarsh Shetkar.
Cycling all the way
A Project Manager at Hewlett-Packard, Adarsh is nothing short of being awesome. He is one of the very cool dudes from corporates who doesn’t mind taking his cycle to work. He cycles all the way from Vijayanagar (where he resides) to his workplace at ITPL, Whitefield at least once in a week. This means he covers a distance of about 30 km on his way to work.
Adarsh in his good old cycling days
A cyclist who was an active participant in various cycling events organised across India turned his way around by choosing to photograph for cycling events instead. Adarsh adds how photography has become an important part of his life too.
I used to participate in cycling events before. Now I’ve turned into a photographer for these events, the main event being Tour of Nilgiris. I’m also one of the organisers.
says Adarsh about the annual cycling tournament, Tour of Nilgiris which happens every December.
Tour of Nilgiris
Tour of Nilgiris covers three different states Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu which includes 1000+ kilometres. The maximum number of riders allowed to participate in this event is 120 or below so if you are looking to be a part of this event, then hurry up and register before the slots are filled.
Cycling is not just a leisure activity right now. Some people want to be trained in this activity professionally and be a part of events while some find it a better activity to get fit and shed some weight. The perspective that cycling has gained over the years is pretty much diversified. For an activity that was considered just a mode of transportation to becoming one of the most preferred sport, Cycling has come a long way and this is what Adarsh had to say:
I think Cycling has really picked up in the recent years. When I travel in Bangalore and get caught up in the traffic, I see a lot of people pedalling through and that’s a good sight to watch.
Get! Set! Cycle!
Every cycling trip is a dream. It not only helps boost your strength as a cyclist but it also helps you discover a lot of things beyond beauty. I couldn’t help but ask Adarsh to recall about his most memorable trip and guess what he said? It was God’s own country – KERALAAAAA! What caught his heart was the scenic beauty of the state, the serenity, the people and the peace you get out of exploring every bit of the greenery. So if you are looking to explore the nature and you have no idea where to go, you know now.
Cycling has numerous health benefits. It helps you strengthen your muscles and tones your body. Moreover, it is a whole lot fun. You can go out for cycling as a bunch and explore various places. Cycling is much more than just an activity.
says Adarsh on why people should go out and cycle more often. An hour of Cycling a day chases out a million diseases away. Well, I just made it up. But I’m sure that by taking time out to go cycle you are gonna feel a lot happier than before. It is any day better than hitting the gym and doing boring workouts. Go out and get one with nature. Get back to your roots. Explore the child in you.
Also Cycling saves a lot of fuel and reduces pollution right?

Want Some Expert Basketball Tips? Here You Go!
To become a professional basketball player requires immense skill, dedication, and hours and hours of practice. And even with all of this, most people don’t make it to the top.
But even if you’re playing basketball as a hobby or to stay fit, it’s important to continuously improve your skills and get better at the game. This will allow you to push your body and enjoy the game to the fullest. If you aren’t sure where to start, here are a few tips that will help you improve at basketball.
1) Pay Attention To Posture
When you’re dribbling, defending, or even taking a shot, it’s important to pay attention to your body posture. You have to learn to stay low when necessary and always avoid dribbling above the middle of your thigh. By cleaning up your posture and ensuring that your body is close to the ball at all times, you can drastically improve your control.
2) Dribble…. A Lot!
Most players still don’t know how to dribble a ball properly. And most intermediate players still haven’t mastered the technique yet.
Dribbling constitutes most of the game, and by learning the technique properly you can help your team win the game. So whenever you’ve got some free time, pick up a basketball and practice your dribble. Alternate between hands and walk around while dribbling so you get a feel for the game.
Also read: 4 Basic BasketBall Dribbles
3) Practice Layups
Layups are an integral part of the game as they help you travel across the court quickly before scoring a basket. They also allow you to set up shots and provide assists to your teammates when the opponent has a strong defence.
By learning to perform a layup properly, you can help improve your team’s chances of winning the game. This is why it’s best to practice layups with both hands, to develop better ball control.
4) Practice The Shuffle Step
youtube
Most defenders don’t focus too much on their footwork when in reality it’s probably the most important aspect of defending in basketball. To improve your footwork, you need to learn what’s called the shuffle step. To do this exercise, run sideways across the court multiple times till you get the hang of it. Running sideways while defending will allow you to keep your eye on the ball at all times.
5) Don’t Jump Around Too Much!
This tip may sound odd considering that basketball involves a lot of jumping. But when you’re defending, try to jump only when absolutely necessary. You don’t want to jump every time an opponent attempts to shoot because in the air it’s almost impossible to change direction. By staying on the ground longer, you can respond to an opponent’s movements a lot easier.
Find A Team
These are a few tips to help improve your game. But if you really want to get better at basketball, find a group of people to practice with, and play a game at the end of every training session.
This will keep you motivated and improve your gameplay constantly.

4 Exercises That You Should Do To Better Your Badminton Shots
Learning to play your badminton shots the right way is extremely important during a game. Good shots can help you snag a quick point at an opportune moment, and they minimise the risk of an injury.
Here, we’ve put together a list of exercises to help improve your badminton shots.
1) Half-Court Matches
This exercise is common among badminton players and allows them to focus on various techniques used in badminton. Find a partner, and rally with them using only one-half of the court.
This confined space will force you to play shots a lot more frequently and limit your use to only a few types of shots. This is a fast paced exercise and will train your body to improve its reflexes.
2) Train Weak Strokes
One of the best ways to train is to get a partner and ask them to rally with you. During this rally, make sure that your partner sends the shuttle to different areas of the court and to different parts of your body. This will force you to return the shuttle using different types of strokes.
If you find it difficult to perform a few shots, then focus mostly on those and ask your partner to serve accordingly. For example, if you’ve got trouble with backhand shots, then perform only backhand strokes during the entire training session.
3) Play At The Rear
Another way to improve your drives and clear shots would be to play a match from the back of the court. So this time, instead of standing in the front half of the court, ask your partner to take up a position in the rear half, near the boundary. You should also be in the same position before starting a rally.
This kind of gameplay will teach you to connect with the shuttlecock properly and help you learn how much power is required to return the shuttlecock from the back of the court.
4) Master The Smash
A shot that most players forget to train is the smash. Learning to smash can help you score a quick point when the time is right.
To practice this, get an opponent to lift while you smash. Keep doing this back and forth for a while before switching positions. This will allow both of you to practice both lifting and smashing.

Be sure to take up positions in different areas on the court so that you learn to smash from various positions.
Focus On Footwork!
These are a few drills or exercises to improve your technique in badminton. Repeat these exercises on a regular basis, and you’ll be delighted with the results.
But besides working on your strokes, it’s important to focus on your footwork as well. Good footwork is imperative to being a great player as it allows you to get into position and execute a proper shot.
And before you start training, remember that badminton is a game and whether you play it as a hobby or take it seriously, never forget to have fun!

4 Keys That Will Help Improve Your Badminton Powerplay
Playing an aggressive and powerful game is a lot more than just getting the right racket. You need to possess the right technique and skill, and it’s important to practice over and over until you’ve got the hang of it.
Of course, having a head-heavy racket will help as they allow you to generate a lot more power into your smashes. But it’s just the beginning.
There are a number of ways to improve your powerplay, and here are a few tips to help you out.
1) Practice Long Swings
The force with which you hit the shuttlecock is affected by the amount of time that your arm swings before the racket makes contact. In short, the longer the swing, the greater the force.
However, it’s difficult to get an accurate shot in when you make an overhead swing, as your body tends to turn with the racket. So while a longer swing generates more force, it may also cause the shuttlecock to be sent in the wrong direction. And force without direction is of little use in a badminton game.
However, by practising long swings you will learn to generate a lot more power into your shots. Keep practising, and soon your muscles will become more compact and efficient in making these shots.
2) Stretch Before Practice
When muscles are stretched in one direction, they store elastic energy which is released when the muscle moves in the opposite direction. This is why it’s important to stretch before every game and even before practice. This will allow your muscles to perform explosively, giving you the force needed to make a powerful shot.
Also read 5 Best Stretches You Can Do Before The Start Of A Badminton Game
3) Practice Footwork
It may not sound related, but having great footwork can drastically improve your powerplay. Good footwork will allow you to get into position quickly, giving you time to gauge the trajectory of the shuttlecock and return it as powerfully as possible.
4) Focus On Your Grip
Most coaches tend to focus solely on strength, flexibility, and muscle action when teaching about powerplay. However, they tend to ignore an important aspect of powerplay – your grip.
By gripping the racket incorrectly, you may inhibit some movements and cause a reduction in power.
Ideally, you should hold the racket at the lowest possible point so that you have a longer lever to swing with. To practice better technique, most coaches will tell you to relax your grip on the racket. And while this is true, you need to learn how to switch to a tighter grip just before making contact with the shuttlecock. This will allow you to generate the most power from a shot.
Find A Partner
The best way to improve your powerplay is to find a partner to train with. Play with a friend or another passionate badminton player and practice your power shots with them. This way you’ll learn to return the shuttle during gameplay.
Practice hard, and you’ll get the hang of it in no time!

And after the game, you feel a lot more relaxed and at peace with yourself. This calm state of mind allows you to return to your daily life with a fresh perspective.
2) Improves Cognitive Function
In badminton, you’re required to constantly use your brain for a variety of manoeuvres and techniques. You also have to keep your eye on the shuttlecock at all times and strategize properly to defeat an opponent. The amount of brain work going into each badminton game is sure to improve cognitive function and foster the growth of new neural pathways.
3) Helps You Socialise

These Tips Will Help You Work Some Magic On Your Badminton Footwork
In badminton, good footwork can go a long way in helping you win a game. You may have the best shots in the country, and top-notch fitness and stamina. But without some fancy footwork, it’s extremely difficult to perform consistently and win games.
The only problem is, most people are completely clueless about how to improve their footwork. However, if you can’t get to the shuttlecock in the right time, it’s almost impossible to score a point. This is why having good footwork is important in a badminton game.
Exercises
The best way to improve your footwork is to perform drills or exercises, that will teach your body to respond better to the shuttlecock. Drill these exercises every day and you’re sure to improve your footwork.
1) Shuttle Runs
You’ll need a partner for this exercise.
Get your partner to stand on the opposite side of the court and serve the shuttle to different locations. Your aim should be to try and get into position a few seconds before hitting the shuttlecock.
To make this exercise really effective, ask your partner to serve to the forecourt while you stand at the back, and vice versa.
2) Shadow Badminton
This exercise is a little more difficult but extremely effective to improve your footwork. Instead of getting a partner, try to play badminton by yourself. Of course, you’ll have to practice this exercise without the badminton net.
youtube
As with the previous exercise, try getting into position long before hitting the shuttlecock.
3) Practice Recovery
Another important part of footwork is learning how to recover from an unfavourable position. This comes with practice, but you can improve your recovery patterns by working on your core and leg strength.
These are a few exercises to help improve your footwork. However, most players ignore one essential part of the game – the speed. It’s difficult to adjust to a game when the tempo is something that you aren’t used to.
Also read: Which Shuttlecock Is Better For Beginners: Plastic Or Feather?
To properly adjust to the tempo of a game, you’ll need to work on 3 key things – keeping your eyes on the shuttle, training your reflexes, and improving the speed of your muscles.
Eyes
The faster you see the shuttle, the more likely you are to get into a favourable position to send it back over the net. So to improve your footwork, you can start by training your eyes.
To do this, cover the net with an opaque cloth and ask a partner to rally with you for a while. This will force you to focus more on where the shuttle may be coming from, which, in turn, will train your eyes.
Reflexes
To improve your reflexes, you can ask a partner to throw the shuttle over the net and call out a random shot at the last moment. This will force your brain to think quickly and your muscles to respond to the kind of shot that you’ve been asked to play.
Muscle Speed
Training your muscles to respond faster will require a lot of work, and at first, it may feel like there’s no difference. But having your muscles react faster can mean the difference between winning and losing a game.
To do this, get 3 or 4 of your friends to stand on the other side and play against all of them at the same time. You’ll be forced to move around a lot more than usual and this will improve your footwork.
Train Hard!
These are just a few of the many tips out there to help you improve your footwork. With regular training and dedication, you’re sure to improve your footwork in no time, so work hard, and you’ll be amazed at the results.

5 Reasons That Prove Why Badminton Is Better Than Every Other Sport
There’s a lot to be gained from playing a sport. Physical fitness, mental well-being, enhanced mobility, better coordination, and increase stamina are just a few of the benefits of playing any sport.
But one sport offers a host of benefits that most sports tend to lack. Yes, we’re talking about badminton, and here are a few advantages it has over most other sports.
1) Low Injury Rate
Badminton is a non-contact sport, making it a lot safer than most contact sports. You don’t have to be supremely fit to start playing the game, and the intensity of the game is determined by the level of the players.
As such, badminton players have a much lower injury rate compared to other sportsmen. This means you can play this game on a regular basis without taking time off to heal from an injury.
2) Lesser Players
If you’re familiar with sports like football or hockey, you’ll see that each of these games requires at least 5 people on a team. And most of the time, it’s difficult to find ten people with free schedules, willing to come out and play.
On the other hand, you only need two players to play badminton, and it’s a lot easier to find a willing opponent.
3) Indoor Sport
One of the most important aspects of badminton, and the reason why it’s the second-favourite sport in India is that it is played indoors.
Playing badminton outdoors is difficult, if not impossible because even a slight breeze can cause the shuttlecock to move unpredictably. So to prevent the elements from hindering the game, this sport is played indoors all the time.
So even if it’s raining in your area, you can simply head over to a badminton court and play a game or two. And in a country like India, where the weather is quite unpredictable, an indoor sport is a great way to spend time.
4) Inexpensive Sport
For badminton, all you need is a racket, a shuttlecock, and a court to play on. While professional rackets and shuttles are quite expensive, you’re sure to find inexpensive shuttlecocks and rackets in various sports stores across the country.
As for the badminton court, there are many badminton clubs and sports institutions where you can play a game of badminton for a very small fee.
5) Growing Popularity
In India, badminton is the fastest growing sport, second only to cricket. You’ll find institutions all over the country, especially in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore. So whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player, there are tournaments for you to participate in.
You’ll also find many badminton clubs and groups in your own city, and joining a group like this makes it easier to stay motivated and improve your game.
One Of The Best!
The reasons outlined in this article show that badminton is one of the best sports to pick up as an Indian. So if you’re looking for a fun form of physical activity, try your hand at badminton!
