Boat crashes on Palos Verdes coast, 2 fishermen missing after exhaustive search

Two men who went fishing from the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles Monday night remain missing Tuesday after their boat was discovered wrecked off the coast of Palos Verdes early this morning. As a photojournalist, this space is usually filled with “snaps” taken between assignments.  Over the last several weeks there has been no time for “snaps” as fire after fire has swept throughout California. Lives have been overturned and California is learning to adjust to a troubling new “normal”.  Bless all of those firefighters, law enforcement and others who continue to run into the flames to save lives and property. Also, thank-you to all of my colleagues who I have worked with covering these tragic events. There are no “fake media” or “enemies of the people” here, only dedicated professionals putting their safety in jeopardy to keep the public informed under difficult fast-changing conditions.

You know you’re a hardcore Emergency! fan when you see a PBS documentary about the 2015 earthquake in Nepal and perk up during the scenes of devastation when you hear that LA County Firefighters made the long trip to join the rescue efforts. Vanessa Bryant ‘Sick’ after Kobe and Gianna Crash Pictures were Shared by LA County Officials

According to Vanessa Bryant's testimony in her lawsuit against LA County, she felt "sick" and "extremely sadness and anger" when she found out that LAPD officers had photographed her husband and daughter's helicopter accident scene.

Bryant wrote, "It infuriates me that the people I trusted to protect the dignity of my husband and daughter abused their positions to obtain souvenirs of their deaths, as though possessing pictures of their remains somehow makes them special, I imagine Kobe watching over what occurred at that crash scene, and I am overcome with anger and emotion."

She also goes on to say, “I also feel extreme sadness and anger knowing that photos of my husband's and daughter's bodies were laughed about while shown at a bar and an awards banquet.”

Vanessa Bryant sued Los Angeles County, its fire department, its sheriff's department, and eight individual sheriff's officers in September of last year after reports that first responders had taken and shared images of the horrific scene of the crash where Kobe and her daughter Gianna Bryant and seven others perished in January of 2020.

After an independent forensic expert inspected over 20 LASD and LACFD devices and purportedly discovered no crash scene images, the case was quickly dropped.

Bryant does not believe in the County’s reasoning for dropping the case and fears that "One day, such as when my girls are assigned to research their family tree for a school project, I do not want them searching my husband's and daughter's names to discover photos of their remains," Bryant added. "For the rest of my life, one of two things will happen: either close-up photos of my husband's and daughter's bodies will go viral online, or I will continue to live in fear of that happening."

The Rodium Swap Meet is a place I went to when I was young once or twice with my dad's best friend, Bill Horn. He was a strange guy. Once he owned his own surf shop back in the 80's and he was forced to sell it because he would frequently leave a sign that he was out of the shop and that it was closed for the day. But him and me dad grew up together and my dad would put up with his ramblings and long jokes through the years. They had a business together selling air horns imported from Germany to the LACFD. Even More Dangerous Heat, Powerful Winds Descend On Southland Friday

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – A hot air mass that will settle over the Southland Friday sent the mercury peaking into the low 90s into the weekend, with potential record-breaking temperatures creating challenges for Angelenos who are under stay-at-home orders amid the coronavirus pandemic.

A heat advisory will remain through 6 p.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service reports.

CBS2 Meteorologist Danielle Gersh called the heat “extreme and dangerous.”

Temperatures are about 20 degrees higher than what they usually average for this time of year, Gersh said. Highs at this time of April are in the low 70s.

“Today, tomorrow are going to be your two hottest days of this heat wave, with more records into this afternoon, and possibly more records into tomorrow as well,” Gersh said. Yesterday we tied records in places like Camarillo and Burbank.”

The L.A. Department of Recreation and Parks has opened four cooling centers. They will be open Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. They will follow social distancing guidelines.

Mid-Valley Senior Center at Sepulveda Recreation Center: 8825 Kester Avenue, Panorama City.

Robert Wilkinson Multipurpose Center: 8956 Vanalden Ave. Northridge.

Sherman Oaks East Valley Adult Center: 5056 Van Nuys Blvd. Sherman Oaks.

L.A. County Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer, advised people not to get in their cars and drive to other counties that might have loosened restrictions along the coast, noting that they could still be exposed to the coronavirus then bring it back home.

Some beaches in Orange County, such as Huntington Beach and Newport Beach, remain open, although most parking lots are closed — making parking difficult if not impossible — and social-distancing requirements remain in force. There were about 9,000 people at Huntington Beach Thursday, lifeguards told CBS2.

Seal Beach, Laguna Beach,  The Wedge in Newport Beach and San Clemente State Beach remain closed.

“It’s very important even with the good weather that people do not congregate together outside,” Ferrer said.

Malibu Mayor Karen Farrer Thursday pleaded with visitors to stay away.

“Please stay safe at home, and enjoy the outdoors in your neighborhood or in your backyard,” Farrer told CBS2.

Wind advisories were in effect for several areas, with moderate to gusty winds possibly downing trees and creating power outages. The strongest winds will sweep the Interstate 5 corridor in the San Gabriel Mountains, the Antelope and Santa Clarita valleys and along the coast, according to the NWS.

Gusts of up to 75 miles per hour are possible in some areas.

Meanwhile, the L.A. County Fire Department issued a warning to homeowners after seeing a surge in house fires over the past few weeks.

“In home fires, a properly-prepared and maintained window, clear of obstacles, may provide the quickest, safest way out,” LACFD Chief Daryl L. Osby said in a statement. “In the event of a fire, crawling low in the smoke and trying to find your way to the front door isn’t the most effective way to escape, because residential fires often originate in the living room or kitchen where these doors are located. Now is the time to speak with all family members and individuals living at home about how to stay safe from home fires.”

A California woman was airlifted to safety early Friday morning after she tumbled 100 feet off a clip in Palos Verdes.

At around 8 a.m., officials received a call about a female hiker at the bottom of a ravine, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department tells PEOPLE.

The woman, whose identity has not been revealed to the public, was discovered by fellow hikers who heard her screams for help.

Once they located the woman, they realized they were unable to reach her and dialed 911.

Emergency responders with LASD’s Special Enforcement Bureau responded to the scene and performed a hoist rescue.

LASD’s Special Enforcement Bureau shared footage of the harrowing rescue on Twitter, documenting the moment the woman was airlifted to safety.

In the clip, officials can be seen lowering themselves down from a helicopter to the woman, who was trapped in a mass of rocks near a shore of crushing waves.

The spokesman for LASD tells PEOPLE the woman was transported to the trauma center of a nearby hospital.

It is not immediately clear as to how the woman fell or how long she had been at the bottom of the cliff until help arrive, LASD says.

Her condition at this time is unknown.

In May I made the move from Seattle to Los Angeles and it didn’t take long for me to start itching to get outdoors and explore. Unfortunately it took me a couple weeks to settle in and finally make time to get out. I started doing some research on recommended places to camp near LA and Henniger Flats was at the top of almost everyone’s list that I could find online. A short hike, free camping and not far from where I live; sold. Especially for my first camping adventure since making the move to sunny California.

Henniger Flats is located in the San Gabriel Mountains near Altadena, California. Directions on getting there are pretty simple coming from downtown LA. I’m not going to try and give directions not having lived in LA for that long but you can click here to get directions to Henniger Flats from your current location using Google Maps. Here’s a map that can give you a little idea of where Henniger Flats is exactly and where the trail head is.

Henniger Flats is located near Altadena, California.

The trailhead to Henniger Flats is located off N Altadena Drive. It’s not easy to spot but if you’re familiar with the area, you’ll probably have no problem finding it. If you’re heading to Henniger Flats for the night, you’ll have to pay attention to where you park because there’s not a lot of overnight or long-term parking at the trailhead. I personally parked down the street on N Altadena in the neighborhood. Just keep an eye out for parking signs and you’ll probably be ok.

Cross the white bridge, and stay to the left and go up.

When you reach the trailhead you’ll see a sign that reads, “The Henniger Flats Project.” You have to hike up  Mount Wilson Toll Road to get there. Initially it’s a little confusing to figure out which trail you need to be on to get there, at least it was for me. You’ll walk down the beginning of the trail and cross the white bridge. Once you cross the white bridge, stay to the left and head up until you reach Henniger Flats. It’s about a 3 mile hike and the incline gets steep at times. There are plenty of benches to rest at on the way up.

There’s no shade on the way up so it’s important to start your hike early if you intend on camping and have a heavy pack. Also bring an abundance of water. There is a visitor center and museum at Henniger Flats, but there’s no running water. Be prepared! I didn’t run into any wildlife and you probably won’t either since the trail is very popular and there seems to be a lot of foot traffic throughout the day. There are a few signs for rattlesnakes but I didn’t run into any.

After your 3 mile journey to the top, you’ve reached Henniger Flats. First thing’s first, you need to find the onsite LACFD Forester that’s on duty to check in. I read that you’ll be given a permit for camping and to use a stove, but I didn’t have to do that when I checked in for whatever reason. There was a cub scout clan doing some work at the campgrounds so I’m sure he was busy and distracted. After or even before you check in, you can check out the visitor center and museum to learn about Henniger Flats and the surrounding areas. It’s pretty neat.

Once you get checked in you’ll have to find your camping lot. There are 3 levels of camping at Henniger Flats. There’s a lower level campground near the visitor center and museum. It seemed pretty busy, so I walked to the upper and Fiji campgrounds. The forester actually recommended the Fiji campground area for a quieter environment and great place for setting up hammocks. He was absolutely right and if you’re looking for a quiet place to chillax, Fiji is the way to go.

Most larger camping lots have picnic tables and stoves to cook on. It’s worth noting there are about 15-20 camping lots in the upper and lower campgrounds. Fiji only has 3 camping lots, so you have to get there early to snag one. You can also call the forester ahead of time to get some insight on open camp lots. There’s plenty of shade once you get settled and the campgrounds are very well kept. There was no trash, the trails were well maintained and the views are phenomenal. There’s plenty of trails to check out after you get settled in.

Overall I had a great experience camping at Henniger Flats and I will certainly go again. I ended up camping there on July 2nd and the campgrounds did seem a little overpacked but I’m assuming it was for the 4th of July. With the views you get of the city, I’m not surprised at all. I did catch some early fireworks going off and it was a pretty amazing sight. Something to keep in mind next year for the 4th if you decide to check this place out!
