A history of tennis fashion and skirts: Why are they still such a must?
Tumblr media

On the first night of the U.S. Open, Serena Williams took the high road and responded to her catsuit ban by wearing a fabulous black tutu.
The French Tennis Federation president, Bernard Giudicelli, recently said Williams’s Wakanda-inspired catsuit (her words) “will no longer be accepted,” during an interview with Tennis magazine. “One must respect the game and the place.”
Discussion soon erupted on what type of tennis attire is considered appropriate or not. Tennis legend Billie Jean King chimed in on the conversation, slamming French Open officials for the ban. “The policing of women’s bodies must end,” she wrote in a Twitter post. “The ‘respect’ that’s needed is for the exceptional talent ⁦@serenawilliams⁩ brings to the game. Criticizing what she wears to work is where the true disrespect lies.”
Williams didn’t let the controversy deter her from winning her first U.S. Open match against Magda Linette on Monday. For the occasion, she paired her black tutu with an edgy leather moto jacket, asymmetrical leotard, and white sneakers. The look is part of the new “Queen” collection inspired by the tennis star and made in a collaboration between Virgil Abloh, the acclaimed Off-White designer, and Nike.
With this look, the 23-time Grand Slam winner continues her stride as a statement-making fashion star on the tennis court, and, as history shows — she’s not alone. Anne White was the first player to wear a catsuit on the court, which caused quite a stir at Wimbledon in 1985. Unconventional tennis fashions have been worn by male players too. A notable example is Andre Agassi, who wore denim shorts to the U.S. Open in 1988. Serena Williams longtime rival, Maria Sharapova, explored creative fashion as well, wearing a tuxedo-style blouse at Wimbledon in 2008.
Despite these fashion-making moments, the iconic tennis skirt continues to be the key sartorial piece in the game. Above, a look at how tennis fashion has changed over the years and why the skirt endures.

During the 1900s, long-sleeved blouses and long maxi skirts were the style of choice for tennis players. “Tennis started out in the Victorian era in England as a lawn sport for the aristocracy,” said Ben Rothenberg, author of The Stylish Life: Tennis, on CNN.
Modest tennis fashion dominated the era, as seen below on a tennis player who wears a pussy-bow blouse with ballooned sleeves, long white skirt, and white sneakers, all covering up nearly every inch of skin.

The 1920s saw a loosening of dress codes with the introduction of sleeveless blouses and higher hemlines. Pleats also became a popular stylistic choice.
Here, Olympic and Wimbledon champion Suzanne Lenglen wears a knee-length pleated skirt. She accessorizes the look with a soft head wrap.

In the 1930s, skirts and hemlines continued to hit the knee, but pantyhose was no longer required in the dress code. Women began to wear polo shorts or another alternative: drop waist dresses or those cinched at the waist.

By the 1940s, women embraced shorts for greater mobility on the court, but they still kept them classy (of course). Here, American tennis player Pauline Betz wears a short-sleeve blouse tucked into her high-waisted, soft pleated shorts and a belt to tie it all together.

In the 1950s, when Marilyn Monroe’s famous windy skirt photograph became an iconic moment in film history, tennis players like Lea Percioli bent the rules of traditional tennis fashion.
Her style on the court was often featured in the press, where Percioli embraced short skirts and dresses, even if that meant showing more than she planned on.

By the 1960s, mod fashion was front and center. Women took a more playful approach, embracing sleeveless tops and shirts with stripes, gingham, and other graphic prints like those seen here on  Virginia Wade and Lorna Greveille-Collins of England and Marlys Burel of France.

The 1970s was all about psychedelia. Colorful prints and patterns dominated the fashion scene, and this influenced tennis fashions, too, as exhibited here in a look worn by Martina Navratilova.

The 1980s witnessed a controversial look by American player Anne White, who wore a white spandex catsuit by designer Ted Tinling during her first match at Wimbledon. Little did she know that Serena Williams would sport a similar catsuit at the French Open more than 30 years later.

The 1990s were all about bright colors, loud prints, and plenty of scrunchies on the tennis court. German champ Steffi Graf wears a colorful floral skirt with a matching polo shirt and white scrunchie in her hair at the French Open in 1995.

By the 2000s, brands like Adidas and Nike were emblazoned on tennis outfits of the top athletes. Here, Russian player Anna Kournikova wears head-to-toe Adidas.

In 2008, tennis champions Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova pushed the envelope of traditional tennis attire at Wimbledon, a bastion of traditionalism. Williams opted for a white trench coat, while Sharapova wore a tuxedo-style pleated blouse tucked into white shorts — and both looks were designed by Nike.
Unfortunately, Sharapova wasn’t able to wear her new look for too long, as she was eliminated in the second round. Her winning opponent, Alla Kudryavtseva, had this to say of Sharapova’s look, “I was pleased to beat her: I didn’t like her outfit.”

In 2010, tennis fashion took a more scandalous approach when Venus Williams wore a lingerie-like, sheer black-lace dress with red piping, designed by Williams for her fashion label, EleVen.

In 2011, Venus Williams continued her fashion stride, sporting atypical tennis attire.
At the Australian Open, Williams sported a yellow woven, cut-out tank with a splash of color.

In 2015, Maria Sharapova traded in her 2008 tuxedo shirt for a classic stripe shirt over what would become known as the “Nike Maria Paris dress,” an adjoining white racerback tank top connected to a pleated navy mini.

In 2016, Serena Williams sported a classic all-white look in deference to Wimbledon’s all-white policy.

In 2017, 24-year-old Sloane Stephens won the U.S. Open women’s singles competition wearing a sherbet-orange tank dress and matching visor and shoes by Under Armour.

In 2018, Serena Williams debuts her Wakanda-inspired black catsuit at the French Open, which was designed to help prevent blood clots, a health issue she has been prone to.
The catsuit came under scrutiny by French Tennis Federation president Bernard Giudicelli, who recently said the style would “no longer be accepted.”

In the wake of this controversy, Williams debuted a brand-new look for the U.S. Open on August 27: a black tutu skirt, made by Off-White and Nike.

Socks Through Time: The History Of Goth
Now that it's October, we wanted to talk about one of our favorite "dark" styles of fashion: gothic fashion! We've briefly touched on this before, during our Historical Costuming series and our Socks Though Time piece on fishnet, but today we're going back much, much farther than that, to the real roots of Goth: Germanic tribes. Of course, in this context Germany was not a nation with defined borders yet, but these and other Germanic tribes came out of what we now define as southern Scandinavia and northern Germany. The origins of the Goth tribes specifically are a little vague prior to the first wave of the Migration Period, but man did they ever get around.
Tumblr media
Map of the Visigoth and Ostrogoth territories under Theodoric the Great, circa 523 AD -- image by Howard Wiseman, via Wikimedia Commons
Of course, the migration of the Gothic tribes was a long and complicated process which we aren't going to get too much into today, as we're really here to talk about fashion. The important points are that after many years of alternately fighting with and against the Roman Empire and the Huns, they divided into two primary groups by the 4th century: the Visigoths in the west, and the Ostrogoths in the east. The Visigoths became foederati of the Roman Empire, meaning they were essentially subsidized in exchange for supplying their armies with warriors. The Ostrogoths, on the other hand, joined with the Huns. At the start of the 5th century, the Visigoths rebelled against the Romans, leading to the 410 sacking of Rome. This is considered to be a major event in the fall of the western Roman Empire, resulting in the emergence of Medieval Europe. Then in 454 the Ostrogoths followed suit, successfully revolting against the Huns. In the early 6th century, the Visigoths and Ostrogoths were reunited under Theodoric the Great, which lasted until about 553.

Now, getting back to the fashion side of things, one might wonder what the original Goths wore. The Greeks and Romans described the Goths as barbarian invaders (in fact they referred to the Migration Period as The Barbarian Invasions), and since much of the early information we have on the Goths comes from the Roman's descriptions of them, we know a lot more about how their warriors dressed than their peasants. They were known for dressing in animal skins, and evidently wore "bandages" on their feet instead of socks. Of course, these aren't the sort of bandages that we think of today, used for dressing wounds -- these were just strips of fabric which were wrapped around the feet and legs, usually worn under leather sandals which laced up. While we do have a few mummy styles featuring bandage motifs, which could be useful in a pinch, they do have some bits of old pharaoh poking out here and there, and that's just a lot more Egyptian than it is Gothic (though it's also pretty gothic, just not in the capitalized sense of the word, and pretty metal as well). For a more authentic route, we suggest using one of our Dyer's Batch Crafty Bundles, which feature white and cream colored socks, which can easily be cut into strips for wrapping. The benefit to using the knitted materials provided in Crafty Bundles instead of a woven material is that knits typically don't unravel as easily or completely. Pair your "bandages" with a tunic, round shield and animal skins (or more likely, faux furs) and you're basically a Goth with a capital G!

On a more representational note (because let's face it, dressing like a Visigoth is fun once or twice a year, but just not that practical for everyday wear, at least for those of us who aren't actively plotting to overthrow the Romans), you can still achieve a tribal Goth "vibe" in your fashion -- the Goths had a distinctive geometric style of jewelry, as seen above, and we've got some diamond patterned tights from Leg Avenue to evoke a similar feel. For a metallic option, try one of our hand-printed styles from Polonova!
Tumblr media
Stained Glass Web Net Pantyhose * Ann Knee Highs
The next big thing in gothness was the Gothic Architecture style of the Medieval period, featuring flying buttresses, pointed arches and ribbed vaults. It was initially known as the French style (and yes, the Goths did make it into France well before the Medieval period, but that doesn't mean they invented this style), and it wasn't until the late Renaissance that it came to be known as Gothic. You may be familiar with the famous Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, which is considered a prime example of French Gothic architecture. We've also got some great styles which emulate elements of this architectural movement -- the Ann Knee Highs from Sweet Marcel are inspired by wrought iron spirals, while the Stained Glass Web Net Pantyhose are a great modernized take of this classic cathedral element.
Tumblr media
ABSINTHE Knee Highs -- the Romantics were all about that absinthe * Curious Crows (or raven, why not?) Knee Highs * Frankenstein's Sockster Knee Highs
The Romantics were the next to get into goth, with the invention of Gothic Fiction, AKA Gothic Horror. The new genre combined elements of Romanticism such as nature, melancholy, and the supernatural, with a sense of terror. The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole is generally considered to be the first example of a gothic novel, and was published in 1764, paving the way for the Romantics, who's era really began around 1800. More prominent titles within the genre include Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818), and Sheridan Le Fanu's In A Glass Darkly, featuring one of the earliest vampire stories, Carmella (1872). On this side of the pond, the works of Edgar Allen Poe (1809 – 1849) can essentially all be classified as gothic fiction, and we've even found our own styles of gothic literature, as in the Southern Gothic tradition, which includes the works of such authors as Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote and Flannery O'Connor, and is still alive and well today.
Tumblr media

The Victorian era ran from 1837 to 1901, and their society took the Romanticized idea of gothic and ran with it. They were not a society to do anything by half measures, and though the gothic fiction genre had started to wane by the start of their era, it was brought back with a vengeance by authors such as Oscar Wilde, Charles Dickens and the Bronte sisters. The Victorians also had their own "cult of mourning" as it was known, with strict rules for how long one should  remain in mourning, wearing only black. They were so obsessed that they created special mourning jewelry, often carrying a lock of hair or other relic from the person being mourned, and wore time pieces inscribed with memento mori -- mottos which served as a reminder of mortality and the dead.  High Victorian Gothic is also an eclectic style of architecture, which combined Classical and Gothic styles. The Victorians were so gothic in spirit, that the entire era of clothing can essentially be considered gothic, and even in modern goth culture, Victorian aesthetics are often heavily featured. While we've branched out quite a bit over the years, our current "Vintage" collection actually started life as "Victoriana," and you can still find a lot of Victorian-inspired styles in there, including the three pictured above!
Tumblr media
Snappy Spiked Garters are pretty punk * Party Night Arm Warmers are definitely a bit glam * Snappy D-Ring Garters have a distinctly punk rock bondage vibe
And now, at last, we have arrived at the moment that everybody has been waiting for: the gothic subculture which emerged out of the late 1970's and early 80's post-punk scene. We really could have written an entire blog on just this part of goth, but since we apparently felt like that wasn't nearly complicated enough when we set out on this journey, we're just going to hit some key points today, leaving the tortured depths of 20th century goth to be plumbed another day. So, let's start with some of those post-punk influences, shall we? We definitely can't talk about goth without mentioning Siouxsie Sioux, who, prior to providing a basis for goth fashion, had already left her mark on the punk scene of the 1970's, introducing bondage and other fetish wear to the style. Perhaps the most iconic part of her style, though, was her dark, cat-eye make up, which cemented black eyeliner as a punk and gothic staple. A close runner-up was her spikey black hair. Musically speaking, the 1979 tongue-in-cheek Bauhaus single Bela Lugosi's Dead precipitated the rise of the gothic rock genre.
Tumblr media
Mid-Length Petticoat because no Lolita outfit is complete without some pouf * Seamless Opaque Faux Lace-Up Arm Warmers and Tights for that corseted neo-Victorian vibe * Neon Rainbow Gauntlet Gloves and Leg Warmers for a distinctly black-and-neon Cybergoth look
While goth fashion and subculture blossomed out of punk, new wave, and glam rock, putting equal importance on the music, it has since grown into many different subgenres and styles over the years, to the point that somebody uneducated on the ins and outs of contemporary goth might not be able to tell that there's any relation. When it comes to "mainstream" (and we're still talking about a subculture here, so it's not really mainstream-mainstream) gothic fashion, specifically, is more Victorian-cult-of-mourning-influenced than post-punk-influenced. Notable offshoots of the goth subculture include Gothic Lolita, which combines the dark themes of goth with Japanese Lolita fashion, and Cybergoth, which combines goth with industrial metal and rave culture, then remixes it science-fiction style, with a healthy serving of neon colors on the side.
Tumblr media
Vampire Bat Web Tights in honor of Bela Lugosi, of course * Rose Lace Stockings in black, need we say more * Velvet Opera Gloves because velvet is at least as goth as lace
As we come to the conclusion of today's overview of goth, we'd like to know: what is it that draws you to this dark and mysterious style? Is it the music? All of the lace? The way black clothes all match (trick question! there are lots of different tones and levels of fadedness to black -- what, are you some sort of amateur goth)? Could it be the Victorian sensibility, or maybe the time the Visigoths and Ostrogoths teamed up with the Romans and Huns, then turned around and overthrew them? Perhaps it just speaks to your gloomy Romantic soul. Whatever the reasons may be, we would love to hear about it!
Happy Gothtober, from all your goth friends and GothDreams!

Hong Kong: All the Random Shit I Ate in Hong Kong 2016
Coconut Mango Sago Drink at Hui Lau Shan
Tumblr media
Right off the plane and you know ya boy went straight for the sweeter than summer mango drink from the holy grail of Ataulfo mangos.  Light coconut milk, ice, blended fresh mango, and some medium sized sago to cut through that humidity.
Milk Tea and Pork Chop bun at Lan Fong Yuen
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toasted sesame seed bun, a swipe of mayo, a slice of tomato, and a seared pork chop on the flat top.  Accompanied by their famous “pantyhose milk tea” this is a meal classified by many as a must try when visiting HK.  Personally, the tea was a bit too bitter, the pork chop was a bit overcooked, and everything was a bit bland.  They’re better elsewhere.
Dinner at this Dai Pai Dong in Hang Hau
A quick dinner at the GF’s local DPD.
Sweet and Sour Pork Chops and Tong Choi with Garlic
Tumblr media
Salt and Pepper Fried Tofu
Tumblr media
Steamed Egg with Minced Pork
Tumblr media
A cheap local restaurant serving honest, real food to the local village of Boon Kin.  Feed the family for under 25 USD with some home cooking without dirtying your kitchen?  Amazing deal.
Breakfast at this Congee Stand in the Hang Hau Wet Market
Tumblr media
Fish Fillet Congee with Chow Mein
Tumblr media
Fresh chow mein at a congee stand! What!?  The congee is also mixed and reboiled to order!
Dried Shrimp Cheung Fun with all the sauces
Tumblr media
That’s right.  All the fucking sauces.  This was my first legit experience with Cheung Fun in HK after the kiddie days and man I’ve been missing out.  This is simply an art that is forgotten in America, or never made it to begin with.  Extremely cheap, ridiculously satisfying.
Curried Snacks at this stand in Cheung Chau
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The smaller islands are known for their oversized fish and cuttlefish balls.  This bowl was packed with it but the bottom was laced with some secret weapons: Simmered pork skin.  The curry sauce was thick, robust, and the heat came late.
Desserts at Cong Sao
Walnut Soup with Sesame
Tumblr media
Durian with Thai Black Sticky Rice
Tumblr media
Steamed Egg with Ginger Milk
Tumblr media
A series of classic flavors and techniques here, all done extremely well.  The only downside is their portion size.
Salted Veggie Rice Noodle Set Breakfast at this Cha Chan Teng in Hang Hau
Tumblr media
Less than 30 HKD!  Wow...
Tofu Dessert at Kung Wo Bean Factory
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though tofu fa is fucking great almost everywhere in HK, this place is the damn experience.  It’s wet everywhere, tofu churning out of every seam.  You might get wet, but it’s ok.  At one corner they’re grilling tofu, the other corner they’re frying tofu puffs.  It’s a busy place that does not wait for anyone.
Chicken Pot at this Hot Pot Place in Causeway Bay
Tumblr media
Chicken Pot is a unique type of hot pot derived from the Sichuanese but has gained huge popularity in HK.  It’s a whole chicken diced up and stewed with some veg in a bed of spices.  The routine is, you work your way through the chicken first, then the normal hot pot ingredients come into play.  A bit thicker and richer than normal hot pot but man it is good.  What remains after the chicken is consumed is a hearty broth of Sichuan spice, chicken bone broth, medicinal herbs, and a whole bunch of disintegrated vegetables.  You can cut it a bit with some hot water or chicken broth, but then the real meal comes after.  The normal smorgasbord of hot pot goodies, but the key is this guy here:
Tumblr media
Yuba sheets rolled and fried until they puff.  Dip and eat.
Coconut Juice at King of Coconut
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Really reminiscent of one of the most popular drinks we made at Sweethearts Cafe (RIP).  Could this have inspired my old bosses?  Possibly.  This Coconut Milk drink is semi-blended with seemingly nothing but fresh coconut milk, ice, and sugar.  There’s got to be more.
You already fucking know at Hot-Star Chicken
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No words necessary.
Pineapple Bun at Kam Wah Cafe
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Known by many as the best Pineapple Bun in HK and by god now I know why.  The milk bun portion comes out fresh, light, and literally collapses in your mouth.  The sweet egg topping is crunchy, delicate, and THICK.  It’s not your normal top that caves after staring at it the wrong way.  This hard hat isn’t going anywhere until your teeth crush it.  Absolutely amazing.  Why can’t we do something like this back home?
More Desserts at Cong Sao!
Pomelo and Mango Sago
Tumblr media
The classic dessert that floods your palate with bitter, milky, coconutty, sweet mango, and tiny sago pearls.
Steamed Egg with Ginger Milk
Tumblr media
Shrimp Egg Noodles at Tsui Wah in Shatin
Tumblr media
Fulfilling some nood cravings at the local chain Tsui Wah.  Still good.
French Toast at Tsui Wah in Shatin
Tumblr media
My aunt claims her favorite HK French Toast is at the Tsui Wah chains, which is blasphemous to hear as an American because what “Best Anything” do you get at your local Denny’s?  Fucking nothing.  But I think my Aunt is pretty serious about this one.  This was the best French Toast I’ve had in recent memory, and it has truly triggered the nostalgic memories from my trip to HK when I was 5.  Golden brown, crispy, not too greasy, and the perfect ratio of crust to toast to peanut butter.
A quick little dinner at this dai pai dong in Shatin
Last quick meal before we fly out and we were shooting for an early dinner at the infamous Chan Kun Kee, but apparently they don’t open until 6:30PM.  We walked around the corner and this other DPD was open and pumping.
The Dining Room:
Tumblr media
The Kitchen:
Tumblr media
Fried Rice Noodles
Tumblr media
Beef Chow Fun
Tumblr media
Eggplant with Minced Pork over Rice
Tumblr media
Just a few classics to feed the family for next to nothing.  When food is this good, this accessible, who needs to cook?
